Spent the night before in Atlantic City. Easy 2 hour drive, easy to navigate and find the parking at the cruise terminal, and paid $280 for the week to park. Worth it for proximity and ease to terminal. Got there early, but took hours to board. (Gave people random numbers between 1 and 10. Even being early, we got #8???) Staterooms were nice but not ready even after waiting so long to board. We haven't done a lot of cruises, but everyone around us that were seasoned cruisers said this was the worst that they had ever seen. Several private functions closed sections of the boat; unsure if this was why it took so long to get on. Spent $3000 on a balcony room for 2 ppl directly through NCL.com, and it included a beverage package and "dining package". Stateroom was a decent size, clean and nice, but announcements (general, not just emergency) came directly into the room as early as 8 am. We were told they shouldn't but it was never fixed. Very narrow hallways. ONE POOL and one kiddie play area, right next to each other made for an extremely crowded deck and unusable pool. Paid $200 for 2 access passes to The Vibe adult only area. We have 3 kids and are fine with kids playing, but you couldn't even get to the pool, hot tubs or bar. This was a trip for our anniversary, so we wanted to be able to relax and have adult conversation, but couldn't due to everything being so crowded and loud. The Vibe was nice, but it's only 2 hot tubs and no pool. The dining package included 3 dinners at specialty restaurants. I made reservations ahead online, but you never really know what you want until it comes time. Well, don't bother trying to eat unless it's at the buffet or you stick to your reserved times. Couldn't/didn't end up using the dining package. Had buffet and Moderno the first few days, but I couldn't eat anything without getting sick... I'll spare the details and try to hold on to my dignity even just a little, but it wasn't vomiting or sea sickness, and happened without fail 20 minutes after eating every single time. The Shanghai Noodle Bar was the only thing I could eat and was actually very good. Activities were so crowded that you couldn't see what was happening. We like casinos and don't mind losing as long as it lets us play for a while. This one just took and took. The service was unimpressive. Everyone seemed friendly enough for the most part, but stressed and overwhelmed. Bermuda was beautiful, but really bad service in the Dockyard. Everyone wants to complain about how expensive the cabs are, but when gas is $10 a gallon and you're driving for 45 mins to get to the other side of the island, $40 really isn't that bad. We needed good food and something to save our vacation, and the driver took us exactly where we needed to go. He even called ahead and made sure they could get us in before getting there. Hidden Gems excursion was really cool, but took up an entire day. If we did ever return to Bermuda, we would fly rather than cruise there. In fact, we looked in to flying home rather than spending one more day on that awful boat to get home, but they wouldn't let us off the boat. Had this been a comped cruise, and we only spent money on our extras, it would have been much easier to swallow. But it most definitely was NOT worth the money and ruined any chance of ever sailing with NCL again. Read Less

Now as far as the rest of the cruise week, it was just subpar. The entertainment was so scarce on this cruise compared to all of our other Norwegian cruises. We had to look to find entertainment that we enjoy. There was a lot of downtime. There is only so much “game shows and trivia” that people want. The band, Jammroc, near the pool was EXTREMELY disappointing. They came out once a day, in the late afternoon, for a minimum of two hours, but took a 40 minute break! There were only a couple of poolside activities that went on the whole week. We barely saw the Cruise Director, Armen. My husband and I ran into him in the hallway, once, and we said, “Hey you are our Cruise Director, right?” His response back was, “Yup I am.” That was it. He did not ask us if we were enjoying ourselves, if there was anything that could be better, etc. He was quite pompous actually. The Waterfront that is supposedly such a great aspect of the ship is NOT, unless you are a cigarette/cigar smoker! We could never sit outside there. There were so many smokers out there. Same thing with Spice H2O. We couldn’t enjoy a drink at the bar without someone next to us smoking! It was so gross as a non-smoker and just un-enjoyable. All of our other Norwegian cruises had a smoking section and non-smoking section and the crew made sure it was adhered to.The show Burn the Floor is the worst show I have ever, ever seen on a cruise ship. It was about guys and girls fighting for each other’s attention. What???? Horrible! We and MANY other people got up during and left. Read Less

Beware! Norwegian is now offering a ""Booze Cruise" package (they call it the ultimate beverage package). If you are planning a vacation to get some much needed Rest and a Relaxation do not book this cruise. It was a disaster. People are falling down drunk at all hours, so there goes your sleep. there is NOTHING to do in bad weather. Also be advised: the pool is so small we couldn't get near it. There are 4 hot tubs for over 4,000.00 people, and the "New Show every night" is a lie. There were 2 shows for the week. Unless of course you want to pay extra for the Circe D Soliel dinner show. The on board communication was awful. Dealing with guest services was an exercise in futility. They did not address our issues , except to send us a tray of desserts. I will Never book Norwegian again. Read Less

This was my eleventh cruise. Day we docked in Bermuda we discovered a live bed bug in our cabin(10164), and upon inspection, some bites. Immediately called guest services who had the exterminator verify our findings. They quickly moved us to another room, cleaned all our belongings, and offered us a free show(which we were not interested in). This was last we heard from anyone about this disturbing situation. We finally sought out hotel management about our situation, and were rather dismissed by them. They did not think this was a major problem, and in fact we felt that they were insinuating that we may have brought the bug in ourselves. They did give us $200 onboard credit and offered us a free dinner at specialty restaurant(which couldn't use as no openings). I felt this compensation to be totally inadequate. Lost a day in Bermuda(as literally only had the clothes on my back), and caused much angst for rest of trip. What was suppose to be a relaxing vacation turned into a nightmare! I was expecting a voucher for a future trip or reimbursement for at least part of trip. Additionally, wrote to NCL upon returning home to request action. Have waited the required time and heard nothing. Will never travel NCL again. As a seasoned traveler, when going to hotels, I always check the bed bug registry. Checked this cruise out for Norovirus but never thought would have to check out for bed bugs. I wouldn't be writing this review if upper management on boat had responded to our concerns OR if we had heard a response NCL to our written communication post cruise. Other parts of the cruise were minimally satisfactory. Too many people! We found public areas overcrowded and couldn't find seats for many activities(trivia, game show, live entertainment). Even finding a seat at the bar was difficult. The evening entertainment was not of the caliber of other cruises(Princess and Celebrity). Regardless of bed bug issue, this cruise line didn't meet my expectations. This ship proved to me that larger is not better. Unfortunately, my memories of this trip are the pictures of the bed bug and bites!!!! Read Less

Computers were down when we embarked/checked in. So we had to wait over 30 minutes at the desk while the check-in guy just strummed his fingers on a desk. Our cabin steward, LEONARD, on Deck 12 was AWFUL. He was surly, bitter, and clearly a very unhappy person. He never once made eye contact or said hello, and deliberately turned away when we walked by -- meanwhile every other steward greeted us cheerfully every day. Our room was dirty from Day 1 - he claimed the "children from the previous family left sand all over" but seemed to think it wasn't part of his duty to clean it. Our mini-fridge was full of EXPIRED soda cans. Not that we were going to drink them anyway but one day, my 18 month old son went to get his milk cup out of the fridge and one of the soda cans literally BURST AND EXPLODED in his face. We reported it to Guest Services in the Atrium. At 10pm when we were all in bed, they sent the head of cabin stewards to harass us in our room and he essentially spent 10 minutes at our door disputing the fact that the cans were all expired. Each soda can had a date clearly labeled on the bottom of the can -- some dated back to October 2015 (we sailed in May 2016). I told him my main concern was the exploded can and he actually tried to spin it and say that it was probably my son who knocked over the can and it burst!!! A soda can - even if it fell - would have fallen 1 inch from the mini fridge to the floor - there is NO LOGICAL REASON for it to SPONTANEOUSLY BURST OPEN AND EXPLODE. They had open play times in the sports court but it was constantly full of grown men and teenage boys so my young children were completely unable to partake in any play time. They need to set aside time for small children! The proffered shore excursions were total rip offs. On average, you could easily pay $100-200 per person to do something off the ship because they always dock really far away from anything else, you are beholden to them for transportation. The ONLY excursion suitable for small children was one to a zoo/aquarium. In tiny print on the order form, it was noted that travelers were responsible for finding their own way back to the ship from the excursion (anyone feel like a candidate for being ripped off by a local cabbie who knows you're beholden to them for getting back to the ship ontime?) AND that part of the aquarium would be closed for construction. Why would I pay $200 to see a closed aquarium and then pay what was probably another $100 in taxi fees to get back to the ship??? LEONARD also botched our suitcases on our final day when we placed them outside - clearly labeled with our color coding - and he threw them into the "untagged" luggage pile - I'm sure it was an act of revenge. So we had to look all over for our suitcases. If that weren't enough, on the day of debarkation back in NYC, there was a couple that had 4 oversized suitcases. The woman complained that she couldn't carry them so the port officers moved them to the front of the line. They were not handicapped, they did not have any small children with them. They were just complaining that they way overpacked and couldn't carry their own bags. Then we got to the front of the line, Erin, who managed the line started letting in every OBESE person pass in front of us when we had already waited over 30 minutes to get through customs. When we asked her why, she said she was only sending them through because they were standing there and that it wasn't her job to determine how they got there in the first place. ?!!?!? How does that make any sense? Her job was the control the line and make sure people were being expedited through customs - not to let every OBESE person through just because of their OBESITY. Meanwhile my children were screaming. This will be the LAST time we cruise with Norwegian. They pack these ships like sardines, rip you off at every corner especially with the shore excursions, and are completely incapable of managing the volume of people. DO NOT SAIL NORWEGIAN. I AM TELLING EVERYONE AND IN EVERY MEDIA OUTLET. Read Less

Booked on the Breakaway - what a terrible decision. If traveling with kids, stay away! The kids camp refused my 3 yr old access to the bathroom saying 'they didn't have a seat for her' and she is shy, so they left her standing in a corner for 1.5 hrs with zero involvement! If you have a stroller (or wheelchair) don't bother bringing it it won't fit down the corridors during room service times (generally all morning & 5-9 pm). The food is repetitive, main restaurants take at least 1.5 hrs, casino smoke smell can be smelt in the Center of the boat on 3 floors! Zip line was broke and according to the staff 'need serious safety updates', balcony room was decent-we were lucky to have 2 play pens but with zero walking space (had to climb on the couch). Only 2 sets of elevators. At the back or the front. . Watch fo mysterious room charges. Entertainment was minimal, second city was ok. The o'shenahan pub was great! Overall, keep looking! This boat is far too overrated. Read Less

We recently sailed to Bermuda from NYC on the Norwegian breakaway with our 2 children (1.5 and 4.5 years old) and in-laws. It was the first and last time we will ever sail on a Norwegian cruise. We paid for a mini-suite with balcony and the room was tiny but we expected it, since it's a cruise. What was annoying was that my in-laws paid for a balcony room and it was the exact same size for a lot less money. Strike one. If you're traveling with young children (under 3) there is little to nothing to do with them. The choice of activities is extremely limited and their baby playroom is a tiny room at the front of the boat with some picked-over toys and a boom box. My son wanted nothing to do with it. The Splash Academy Kids' Club is for children potty trained and over the age of 3. My daughter went 2 days and never returned, although the staff was very kind and we did like them a lot. If your kids like the pool, be careful. It's a salted pool but has so many chemicals in it that our skin was burning. My daughter, who I usually have to drag out of the water, wanted absolutely nothing to do with it because it was so incredibly salty and chemically altered. The Nickelodeon activities are embarrassingly bad and the "family party" started at 8 pm and lasted an hour. It was thrown together with last minute-type activities and like everything else for kids, was completely underwhelming. I got food poisoning on Day 3 from ceviche in the main dining room. This completely wiped me out for 2 days and I missed half of the time in Bermuda. It also completely ruined the rest of the dining experience for me as I was scared to eat anything. I like the idea of the freestyle dining but the cover charges are simply ridiculous and after getting food poisoning, I wasnt about to shell out $30 a person for a steakhouse. The free specialty dining options we did were Shanghai Noodle Bar, which is a Chinese restaurant right next to the smoking section of the casino so you can have a healthy dose of cigarette smoke with your bland noodles. The other was O'Sheehan's pub which was the worst food we ate over the entire 7 days and that's including the food poisoned ceviche. Entertainment was decent. We took our daughter to see the Cirque Dreams show. Although she enjoyed it, we found it to be quite amateurish and not at all worth the $50 price tag for a fixed price menu with a tough piece of steak and stale pastries. Burn the Floor is enjoyable but only ran 2 times during the entire 7 days. The on-board charges and stipulations are annoying. We had the beverage package but it didn't include juices, cappuccino/espresso, bottled water or milkshakes and we weren't able to get drinks with room service. It also doesn't include glass and half of wine. The shore excursions offered are very overpriced. For $30 an adult/$20 child you can ride in a super cramped bus to Horseshoe beach for 3 hours. You'd be better off getting a private taxi to take you in comfort and stay as long as you please for way less money. If you're thinking about Snorkel Beach, think again. It's covered in broken glass so make sure you wear shoes the entire time to avoid slicing your foot open. Finally, I realize that a boat as big as the Breakaway needs to dock in a large port like the Royal naval shipyard but the area around that is terrible. There's nothing to do or see except for a couple stores and a "mall." If you want to experience Bermuda, I might recommend taking a smaller boat that docks in Hamilton or St. George. It's been almost a week since we've been back and I'm still really disappointed in our family vacation. Thanks for the memories, Norwegian! Read Less

I cruised on the Norwegian breakaway on october 18.... this is by far the absolute worse cruise I've been on...a little history..I have been cruising with many cruise lines for over 20 years now...I have been to dozens of places and have even cruised with norwegian before. I had problems 3 years ago when I went on the pearl in Alaska and figured I'd give them.another shot...worse mistake of my life to give these people a second chance after first time... First of all we were cruising with family members in two other state rooms. We all booked at the same time yet, our onboard credit was taken away after we received an upgrade which never should have been allowed... One of the other rooms was provided a 200 dollar credit upgraded from 25 dollars the same day. The last room was upgraded to a dining package from 25 dollar credit after they got a free upgrade due to price drop as well.....no consistency among people on phone. We called up and asked what was going on and the excuse they gave us was Apparently, there was a mistake that was made online regarding a decline in price and customer service refused to honor price however when we pushed issue ocean view was provided but it was not made clear that we would be giving up credit. Also if it was a real problem with pricing online why was our other staterooms given a credit instead of taken away... Also, we were told that we would be eligible for promotions all the way up to date of sailing, however, when it came time to request the promotion we wanted we were told we were not eligible for it. We asked y and they responded that we were not eligible past 75 day mark however we were offered a balcony upgrade with 200 dollar credit. After speaking to my wife we called back to upgrade and we're told it couldn't be done and this was yet another mistake. That it would actually cost us 400 to upgrade...seems like no one knows what they are talking about.  On the cruise ship, we had mixed service. Sometimes, we waited 20 min for a glass of water or got attitudes from servers and other times we were waited on hand and foot. Because of the location of our stateroom(5th floor outside room underneath savor restaurant).. the workers from the restaurant above us kept us up til 4 am. We knew it was workers cause noises was happening at 12am and restautant isnt open then...It was high heals stamping...pots and pans banging on floor...screaming across room...etc..We complained to front desk 4 times before giving up and covering our ears with a pillow. We asked to move rooms after the 4th time and they told us there were no rooms available that the ship was completely full. We came to fnd out that was not true and we were flat out lied to our faces. The next day when asked to speak to  manager about issues he made up an excuse about how a customer was supposed to embark the ship in bermuda on the 4th day of cruise no less and that they misses a ride out to ship while it's docked in Bermuda. This was a lie because as per norwegians own policy no one is allowed to enter ship at any time after it has disembarked from its original location. But we were at out breaking point by this point cause we were now up all night so we didnt fight much we just wanted sleep..He finally switched our room that miraculously appeared. (I talked to several room stewards on ship and was told there were over 20 rooms empty so we were flat out lied to)..Meanwhile after we were switched to another room across the ship we were aupposed to get assistance with the luggage to help us switch rooms. We were told they were supposed to be there in 10- 15 min it took over an hour and a half of us waiting around and by that point I had gotten so fed up i already moved myself into the other room.aby time they showed up we were done moving everything. NEXT..I attempted to adjust service charges to zero and to tip those who provided good service because of these issues and I was told that they could not adjust them and that I would have to send in a form to get refund. Yet both the Web site and the paperwork handed out on last day of cruise to us specifically says we can adjust at our discretion upon disembarkation. This was another lie by norwegian. We found out from our credit card company that on last day of cruise , before we could settle account and provide alternate payment method, as we were told, our account was charged for the majority of amount owed. We questioned finance department and they insisted that it was only a hold when we had spoken to our credit card company which included 2 supervisors  who told us otherwise. We had only authorised holds to be placed not charges on that account. We have contacted credit card company and filed fraud charges against ncl.  We requested to speak to manager about charges and was told by associate that she will not wake her cause she is sleeping. This is unacceptable. It is the job of manager to assist customers when they needed it..When we came back next day to talk to her (on morning of disembark meet after we found out our cars was charged)...she flat out refused to talk to us..When we went to desk and requested to see her she said she has nothing to say to us and went I to her office until we left...I was also asked several times on this cruise what tier I was...I feel that this shouldn't matter as I pay for this cruise just live everyone else....If we were gold or got the haven I belive these issues would have been worked out immediately  It because of all these issues that myself and several others on this cruise who also had issues and are now silver latitudes members will be no longer be cruising with Norwegian again...It's a shame beautiful ship but they just lost business from all my family cruising that day and family that will be taking future cruises...o and it's pretty bad I've been on carnival (supposedly rated worse than norwegian) and had not 1 problem on all of the 3 cruises I took with them or any other cruise line...stay away from norwegian especially since there are better cruise lines out there.. Which makes things easier, actually. No Post Cruise Depression. Background: 6 NCL, 10 Carnival, 2 each HAL and Cunard, 1 each MSC and Princess. The good: the crew was excellent. It was so nice to see crew in perfectly tailored uniforms, instead of the sloppy, hastily tucked in look that I've seen on Carnival of late. My cabin steward was great; he always kept us stocked with extra coffee pods and creamers, introduced himself the first hour we were there, and was always in the hallways saying hello. Ryan, cabin 10162. The guest services staff seemed to always be mingling in the line to make sure we were in the right line. Taste, Savor, La Cucina and Le Bistro wait staff were all great. And it's a new ship. Everything is clean and unmarked. 678 Ocean is a nice space. Our cabin was perfect. The Garden Cafe (lido buffet) is a really nice space and surprisingly good. Taste and Savor for breakfast- excellent. The bad: never again will I sail on a mega ship. OMG. First of all, the lido deck, which really encompasses 15, 16 and 17, was designed by a team of schizophrenic madmen. To get from one place to another you are met with walls (the Haven, the ropes course, a huge amount of space for the bottom of the slides, Vibe, basketball course), stairs (up and down, no rhyme or reason- unless the goal was "fill as much on here as possible without regard to flow"), 8 foot tall plexiglass around the vast majority of the decks (with a little slit you can look out of), cheesy kid areas, a way too small pool- the overall feeling is one so removed from being "at sea" that the first thing I did upon trying to get from one end to the other of it was run down and get Vibe passes. Thank god for Vibe. It's an oasis. It's a shame you have to pay $100 to experience a relaxing deck (still with the 8 foot high plexiglass, though) but it's worth it to get away from the insane crowds of people clustering in the available lido deck space. And God help you if it rains. All of those people, the sunburned, passed out people with five dead pina coladas next to their loungers, the little kids, the groups, the strollers and scooters, the teens- will be at 678 Ocean. If you remove the casino portion they're really at 6-8 Ocean. If you remove the giant Park West art hallway and the upsell restaurants, everyone is literally crowded into the atrium/non-atrium, with ear blasting trivia games or whatever else they had going on. And I'm telling you, the volume on that ship is ear splitting. When people tell you to take ear plugs they are not kidding. It seemed as though most people picked the UBP. There was a lot of heavy drinking going on, including the last night, when most people have received their folio and have put the brakes on their spending. It did seem like most people were having a good time at the bars (of course walking by you had the miserable parents with kids in strollers, the scooter brigade- everyone looking for something to do, somewhere to sit or even stand). We picked the UDP: Cagney's: after we started eating our bread the guy at the table next to us said "I think they're having an off night". Yes they were. I returned my 8 ounce filet twice and I never return things. It was just raw inside and I can't.... The sides were really mediocre- the scalloped potatoes were cold and hard. But I didn't feel too bad about sending mine back when another guy at a table near us simply walked out with his wife. He made sure he wasn't charged and walked out. I've never seen that on a ship before. The food took a long time but they brought us extra appetizers. After that experience I changed my next Cagney's to La Cucina, which I know makes no sense but I wasn't going back in there again and La Cucina was the only one available. Good thing because it turned out to be fine. Le Bistro was excellent. Service, food- just a really nice time. This brings me to last night, Teppanyaki. I think my eyes are still swollen from the sodium. Oh my god. I've been to Benihana type places before and knew what to expect. We didn't go to any of the shows so I told my husband, hey this is like we're at a show... (We avoid shows). So it was all good until the chef started drenching everything in soy sauce. I mean drenching and then going back and pouring it on again. The end result was beautiful lobster, steak, calamari and shrimp made so salty that we almost couldn't eat it. My clothes were becoming saturated in smoke, we were sitting there gagging on the soy sauce, so we made an excuse and legged it out of there before dessert. Manhattan: not good. No no no. I had "mushroom stroganoff" which is where I guess you hit when you're at the bottom of the barrel of cost cutting- leave out the beef altogether- and it was horrible. But the Garden Cafe was good- best tasting buffet I think I've ever had. The Indian food was really good. And NCL has really stepped up their game with desserts. They used to be laughable but now they're usually pretty good. Better desserts, great crew, cleanliness, good lido buffet- was this just because we were on a new(er) ship? If I was to go back on Dawn would the good parts remain the same? Is there some way I can experience this and stay the hell away from Breakaway for the rest of my life? Final note: sailing NCL really brings home to me how bad Carnival has become with the cost cutting measures. I have sailed only Carnival for the last four years, except for one HAL trip. It was nice to have Andes mints on the bed. The day you would ever see cold washcloths and lemonade upon getting back to the ship at port on a Carnival ship- wouldn't happen. So I was happy to be on NCL but never again on Breakaway. PS: Bermuda was beautiful ;) Read Less

This is the first time we have sailed on NCL. We have been on Regent, Crystal, Oceania, RCL, and Celebrity. This is by far the worst experience we have had. From the beginning when we arrived at the dock at 11:30 to get on the ship we were given a number which was 37. They held everyone in the check in area, I assume, to get all the rooms ready. I am used to going on the ship and relaxing and having a drink and lunch. We didn't get our number called until 1:00. As we entered the ship there was no greeting party just one girl who stood there and said nothing. We went to our room and then started to check out the ship. Now I understood one of the reasons this large ship was built was to complete with RCL which caters to young people. The first thing we noticed was the minute you came near the casino it smelled from smoke. It is a large area and even though there is a section for smoking everyone was smoking everywhere. We like to gamble but did little of it because of the smell which could be smelled throughout parts of the ship because the smoke traveled. It was not contained. We couldn't believe that the children were faced with walking through this area. We had ordered the Ultimate Drink Package and asked for a bottle of water. We were told it is $4.95 per bottle. Apparently only alcohol is included. We couldn't believe it. At night if you order a specialty coffee there was also a charge. The upstairs buffet had no carving station nor fresh pasta station so we didn't eat there since all the food was left out until that tray was eaten. Certainly not freshly made. We paid extra one night to go to the Circus show which has an extra fee. While the entertainment was OK the food was plated (no choice) and was awful. A piece of steak, 3 shrimp and broccoli. We are used to having lectures and courses on board.....there were none....just Bingo and Deal or No Deal and Art Auctions. Since it rained the staff did not seem to have a schedule for indoor activities. We didn't have children but many of the people we spoke to who had children said since the slides were closed there was nothing for the kids. We found the staff to be the most unfriendly staff we have had on any cruise. Except for our cabin boy all the restaurant hosts were just doing their job and didn't even smile and say hello. To top it off the last night we decided to get some ice cream at the all night restaurant and went there at 11:30. We were told that ice cream is not served after 11:00. They could make food but couldn't dole out ice cream. We are presently booked on 4 more cruises within the year with other cruise lines. You need to change the way you do business because people who have never cruised may love it as a new experience but those who cruise often know the difference. The best part of the cruise was the shower, the cabin boy and the singing group Fire and Ice. Read Less

I wish I could give it zero stars. You would be better off on any other cruise line. Staff is nasty and unattentive. Customer service has no idea what is going on, Their no activities. Very small rooms and tiny balconies. Wait staff is slow and unorganized, you will definitely be waiting for any meal if you don't go to the buffet (which is only open select hours so make sure you check the times or you will be hungry, or have to pay for food) Once inside, plan on spending at least 2 hours dining. 2 shows in a small theater on 2 nights which are completely booked and not that great...make reservations! You want to go to the pool? Forget it!! Their is one pool the size of a typical inground backyard pool for a ship that holds 3000 passengers, 25 people in the pool and it is at maximum capacity. You are pretty much stuck on a boat with nothing to do for 7 days. It is crazy how disorganized Norwegian has become. I will never cruise Norwegian again! Read Less

The nightmare started even before we boarded. I could not use any of my shipboard credits until I boarded. I had $400.00 in non refundable and refundable crets. My bill on the cruise showed total charges of 414.83 and I had a balance owed of 14.83. Imagine my surprise when I got home and my credit card was billed 138.38 instead. When I called Norwegian I was told by two different Reps. that they applied my 150.00 in non refundable credit to my total bill instead of to the daily service charge which is what I wanted and requested. The reps also would not connect me to a manager. In addition the toilet water level came to the very top and it was dirty and nasty so men make sure you keep your penis on top of the seat or you will get a nasty surprise when you get up. We paid extra for a balcony cabin but it was so small, it was unusable. It was so small that you did not have enough room for your feet if you tried to sit in the chair. One person at a time could use the balcony by turning the chair sideways. The excursions were way overpriced. I always expect to pay about 20 per cent markup on cruise excursions but for example Norwegian wanted almost $200.00 for two people bus tour that you could fo on your own for $38.00. The Second City comedy was pitiful. A number of passengers commented on how unfunny they were. I met several passengers who were a lot funnier than Second City was. A glass of soda was almost $6.00. This was my 14th cruise with 13 cruises on other cruiselines and ships and the worst one overall. I am a millionaire and can afford to buy what I want. However I do not like being lied to about what I owe, to be unfairly charged and to feel like I am being ripped off. When we picked up our luggage one of them was ripped across the top so badly that the airline would not accept it in its current condition. I could not find a baggage service area in the exit terminal. There are a numbr of great cruiselines and cruise ships out there, but Norwegian is not even in the running. STAY AWAY or you may experience a nightmare on the Breakaway like I did. Read Less

* At any giving time there were 13 kids in the adult hot tubs, the pool is the poorest design I have ever seen. People complained and no one did anything, adult pool should have been just that . * Service was a joke. * Bars three deep to get a drink with the avg wait time of 20 minutes. * Room balcony is not 4 by 8, you could barely turn the chairs around. * If you had to use the service desk - 30 minute wait. * The main theater wasn't pitched right so all you seen was of the person back of their head, couldn't enjoy the shows . Not to mention the bar of the seating stuck in your back the whole time. * You pay more for Mid ship rooms, but have to walk a mile to the elevators. * You offer everything without enough seating anywhere! * Cagney's was put over the propeller and we vibrated through our dinners. * AC in rooms hardly worked * There was a loose balcony wall above us that banged the whole 7 days. Woke me up every morning. They came 3 times to fix and fail to. * couldn't even get in the pool safely, had to use showers to cool down. One pool for 5000 people? * BATS? Flying in an out the rooms? Unexplainable. * Automatic doors that you had to touch to activate, not once did I see anyone wipe them down. Not once. I had to use my elbow to open the doors. Read Less

There was 8 in my family that cruised to Bermuda, my parents, brother and sister in law me and my husband and 2 teens. I am going to inform you about the ship, the port was great. I have been on 7 cruises with Celebrity and Princess both out of New york and Ft. Lauderdale. I had an indoor cabin and yes the shower was large and great. I didnt see my room steward until the 3rd day? Our rooms could have been cleaner. First time to freestyle dining, which now to me means making reservations and waiting on lines. Yes the shows were great but the cruise is 7 nights so burn the floor one night and Rock of ages another, the cirque show great but its expensive and one night at the second city. Other cruises have 2 shows a night that you dont have to reseve and then get there and hour before so they don't give your seat away? Lots of waiting on line. Forget about seeing anything in the atrium the layout is terrible and if you want to see anything there you need to get a seat about 1 1/2 hours before otherwise you are standing. Yes there are 4000 people on board and you felt like there was, especially at the pool. So the pool in the kid area is good if you have a kid up to age 10 if they are older than that then its babyish, the other pool is 18 and older and thats it? People were saving chairs at 6:30 in the morning, that wasnt the problem the pool was tiny and the water seem dirty, i like to party and have a good time but not from 12 pm to 6 pm thats when they blast the club music at the pool and you can't even relax or have a conversation with the person next to you. I have been on crowded ships i traveled during spring break on Princess, and would go again. This is so much worse, there was no where to go! If you wanted to relax you have to sit in the sun. The restaurants like Moderno and a few others have loungers on the outside but it gets hot and people save those too. I read so many reviews I don't get it, if you want to feel like you are partying at a 80's club and be drunk most of the day and have people so close to you in the pool that you are touching thigh to thigh then this is the ship for you. The pool area service was also bad and they didnt do a good job going around cleaning up cups and dishes that people left. It had a gross smell. We ate at Manhattan room-great, Savoy and Taste are where they must send all the trainees so if you want to waste your morning and afternoon or evening waiting for your food go there and the snotty hostess will seat you. Lots of employees with bad attitudes on this ship. We ate at Moderno fo lunch, buffet just when they opened and the food was cold, cold fish 5 mimutes after they open? We paid to eat dinner there, was terrible service fatty meat and waiter never brought my birthday cake my husband got for me. Burgers at Uptown were great but you will wait a long time for it. I enjoy good food and I love to cook and know good food, this ships food is horrible, I would never go on Norwegian again even if they sent me for free. This ship had a bad layout ohh and as for the rope course and slide, more lines. Im ok with a line but the problem is it is not open long enough, my daughter went to go on a slide it was either closed or they were doing maintence. I used the gym also, another joke, so tiny the weight room you are on top of each other. If this was my first cruise I would be so turned off I would never go again and I dont this because it was summer and there were alot of kids I hardly saw kids it was just too crowded, I felt so unrelaxed all week like we had to be on the move becuase there was just no where to go, so disappointed SAVE YOUR MONEY AND PICK A BETTER CRUISE LINE!!!!!!!! We went on this cruise as part of a birthday celebration with 16 in our group, varying ages. This ship is too big with too many people on it. On the information provided for the ship facts, NCL states that guests are 4,028 (double occupancy) with 1,650 crew members, we had 4,773 guests with approx. 1800 crew. That is a huge difference in numbers for the ship itself. There are 2 pools, 1 adult only which looks to be approx. 20 x 20 feet and 1 kids pool which looks to be smaller than that. My son is 17 and he was only allowed in the kidde pool with all of the toddlers/young kids. As for food, if I have to eat at another buffet, I will cry. Taste, Savor and the Manhatten Room had very long wait times, with Savor and Taste serving the same small portions. NCL stated that there were 2 areas for 24/7 food, the buffet and O'Sheehans. Only O'Sheehans was open with 5 limited selections with no vegetarian option. My son is vegetarian and requested a vegetarian entree late one night, we literally had to beg for a veggie burger. We found no quiet space on this ship with exception of our room, it feels as if NCL thinks that the more noise produced in common areas the better. Our room was nice, great Cabin Steward and very helpful, considerate and kind. A lot of the staff was rude and disinterested, so when you came upon a staff member that was nice, you really appreciated it. The only way I could possibly recommend this trip is if you crave noise, too many people, mediocre food and long lines for everything, then go for it. Oh, and good luck getting a chair on the pool deck anywhere as people will put towels on chairs to reserve (which NCL states is against policy, but does not enforce), with those people never showing up. This was our first cruise, we hope that other cruise lines care a little bit more about the quality of the trip then in increasing their bottom line. It was aweful. Read Less

We went to NY first to spend a few days enjoying the sights and attending musicals! Loved The Book of Mormen and always enjoy or stay at the Michelangelo. We headed to the ship on the 9th for our 7 day cruise to Bermuda. It was our 32nd wedding anniversary celebration. We saved up and booked an AFT room. We were so excited about spending time on our large balcony. We had cruised with Norweigen before and had been happy so our hopes were high. On our prior 7 cruises we just booked standard balconies. That's what we could afford! This time we were super excited because we splurged! We were going to be on the 11 th floor with an AFT balcony room. WARNING!!! No where does it tell you the "big party room" is above you and that every night of your trip you will be kept awake with crazy loud music until closing! The TV and picture on our wall shook to every beat. We called guest services. They told us they were full so all they could do was provide ear plugs. Ear plugs?! I paid over 4,000.00+ for this trip and I needed ear plugs to sleep?! Other information you should know is when we arrived our room hadn't been cleaned. There were half eaten oranges and boiled eggs lying next to our room. Previous cruise guests..... There was an ironing board propped against the wall and an iron outside our cabin. No one had picked anything up from a cruise prior. The cabin itself was filthy. Dirty mirrors. The bathroom hadn't been cleaned. Sheets weren't changed. We called. They sent us a bottled of red wine. We don't drink red wine. I gave it to our cabin steward who got on new to the ship that night and had to clean up after whom ever had dropped the ball prior. The following two mornings our toilet wouldn't flush. They told us the supervisor would come to make sure that our toilets were working within the hour. We didn't see that person until the following evening. I had to go in my pajamas amd use the public restroom both mornings. On the 4th night of not getting sleep due to the disco above, I went to guest services again to beg for a new room. There was a new gal working. I explained our situation and within seconds she found us a new room. Prior to that, we were told "no chance." Thank goodness for the new gal. She was confused as to why someone had told us there were no available rooms. We moved all of our things late that night into a room on the 9th floor. No Aft but that was ok because it was the first night we got sleep in 4 days on the ship. We were thrilled. Guest services called the next morning and offered us a dinner in one of their speciality restaurants. We did not take it. We told them we weren't looking for anything but a quiet room. Another person from guest services called that same day to say they'd given us a 200.00 credit for our troubles?! Whoop de doo. Norweigen has changed!! We were so disappointed in how they handled our room situation, the toilets; not to mention the fact that our cabin and hallway was filthy when we arrived. I will tell everyone I know to choose a different cruise line. I don't want them to waste their money like we ended up doing! In response to the options NCL offers when you get off the ship in Bermuda..... Beware! I paid a fortune for my husband and I to take a 2 and a half hour Segway tour. During the training session, my husband's Segway malfunctioned and he ended up crashing into a brick wall. Luckily he wasn't hurt but that's where it ended for him. They told us the had no other segways charged because it had been a busy day so he was unable to go on the tour. They did not offer him a refund and my husband was too nice to ask for one so I went alone and we lost over 200.00 dollars. I have never written a negative review before but this cruise experience was so bad that I felt it was important to voice my concerns so others don't experience what we did! Choose a different cruise line. Choose a cruise line that values customer service! You deserve that! We all work hard for our money and a vacation shouldn't be a nightmare! Shame on "guest services" on the Breakaway! You failed us! Read Less

NCL failed to keep its commitments. My travel agent requested a wheelchair accessible transfer r/t LaGuardia Airport and was advised that all NCL transfer vehicles are such. We were met by a non accessible bus, so my wife had to be carried on to the bus by 2 people. The same procedure occurred in reverse when we arrived at the pier. The next day Guest Services apologized and said the problem would be corrected for disembarkation. When I checked on Friday, Guest Services, after making some calls, notified me that no NCL vehicles are wheelchair accessible and that I would have to pay above my original transfer fee to secure such a bus or van. When they refused to absorb the additional fee, I asked for a refund. We did not have such a problem with Celebrity in New Jersey. NCL allows you to reserve seating for its 2 free shows. We did this for our family group of 14 and received written confirmation. When we reached our staterooms. we found notices of changes, which interfered with our dining arrangements. When we changed our dining time to make the dance show, we again found a last minute change, causing us to miss the show. We requested through Ship Services dining reservations and received written confirmation through our travel agent of this for 14 at 7:30 P.M. daily. The Taste Dining Room supervisor, after denying we had such reservations, found them for the last 2 nights only. When I showed him again the written confirmation, he seated us and created reservations for us for the balance of the cruise. Unfortunately with NCL no reservation policy except for 5:30 P.M. and 9:00 P.M., our 7:30 P.M. reservations meant we had to stand on line with those without reservations until a hostess was able to take care of us. Sometimes this meant a wait of 30 minutes. Contrast this with Personal Choice dining on other cruise lines where you can make a reservation for any time and then ask the maitre d' for the same time and table for the balance of the cruise. Unless you plan on being the life of the party and having no quiet time and like to deal with teenagers running around the ship unsupervised until all hours of the morning I wouldn't recommend this cruise. We did not meet a single person that was not from NYC or Long Island because apparently New Yorkers think they are two different places? There were over 4000 people on the ship all trying to use 1 pool that was maybe 10x20 and 4 hot tubs that held 4 people each. Walked around the deck looking for a chair to sit in for over an hour 1 day and finally found one that had no bathrooms or bar on that deck and every time you needed something it was a 15 minute walk through the crowd of people to try to get what you wanted. We finally gave up. Don't get sucked in by the price of the "Free" upgrade of either the dining package, beverage package, or the excursion credit unless you can specifically check which one you want we picked the check box that said choice of 1 of 4 things and they automatically gave us the dining package which we did not want then charged us another $140.00 to upgrade us to the beverage package which we already thought we had paid for. You have to make reservations for all of the shows through the app which did not work and could not get into any of the shows once we tried to book when we got on board because they were all full. Only 1 show a night. Read Less

this cruise ship is very beautiful. the restaurants and lounges are all beautiful. the public restrooms are spotless and again beautiful. my shower was amazing (5 shower jets) and the bed was so comfortable. that is about the extent of my happiness on this ship! we spent about $8000.00 for a family of four because of all the amenities that we like are NOT included in my already expensive room. when i arrived i had to ask housecleaning to re clean my room. there was dust on all the furniture, and coffee pot. and there was shaved short hair on the bathroom floor (gross!!!) it is entirely over crowded. we never got near the pool (traveling with 2 kids). every time my oldest son was on line to get on the high ropes, he waited 45 minutes then it would rain, closing the high ropes (completely understandable) but afterwards there was no fast tracking the line! he did this 3 times and 3 times it was shut down just as he was next! very frustrating! my youngest just wanted to get on the trampoline but it was always closed or broken. the basketball courts are taken over by teen agers and never was it free to use. nor a ball in sight to grab. the restaurants all serve the same thing. unless you upgrade to the ultimate dining package (which we did approx $500) and do not even get me started on the garden cafe! my massage was wonderful, but it is below the gym's weight room so all i heard was Bang, Bang... nice and relaxing! i paid over $400 for 2 massages, then if i wanted to get into the spa (where all the saunas, steam rooms and hot tubs are) i had to pay another 200 per person. so basically there is another $800 right there! basically if your looking for a high end vacation, because that is what you'll spend on this trip. it is not at all worth the money. you can experience a high end vacation for that kind of money and it is sadly not on board the breakaway. its really over crowded Read Less

I just returned from a 7 day sail to Bermuda out of NY. Our group of 21 people all experienced the same incredibly rude and unprofessional staff on this ship. If there are 1,640 crew members, I'd estimate 60 of them did their jobs well or at least had a smile on their faces. These people made our trip miserable and we'll never sail on NCL ever again. It was so bad that we often took trips over to Guest Services (because no one ever picked up the phone), which was of no help. They were dismissive, rude, and unhelpful as they tried to get through the line of people that were always there complaining about something. They brushed off complaints without so much as an apology. They told one guy, who was trying to get a lost and found item, to watch his tone of voice and get in the back of the line. It was as though customer service was never a part of their training or that we were inconveniencing them by choosing their ship. I don't know if it was the end of their tour or it was the final leg of their season, but everyone was just over it. One of the photographers was so inappropriately rude for no reason at all. She just happened to be in a bad mood when we took our family photo and refused to help organize or direct the shoot. She yelled at our 5 year old niece for having a clutch purse (which was about 6 inches long) and told her she couldn't hold it because there was no room (there was plenty of room and a clutch would not have taken up any space). She just stood there with an attitude and kept yelling to move but did not direct her barking orders at anyone in particular. She threatened to call security after my husband got upset with her for being out of line when he walked away from the photo shoot. She yelled at him and kept talking back and told us we 'can take a picture of her name tag if we'd like' after we asked her why she was being so rude and that we'll talk to our friends at Guest Services. She cut off two of our bodies in the photo and absolutely could have put in the effort to make the picture come out nicely. She was so nasty. We had suites on the 9th floor and spent a week long vacation without the ability to sleep as the Fat Cats jazz club was directly below our rooms on floor 8 and had music blaring until 1am 5 nights of the cruise with ZERO soundproofing between their ceiling and our floor. We heard everything... the bass was so high we were able to feel the room thumping. It was so loud we were able to hear the lyrics of the songs and the crowds singing along and clapping in our rooms. It took 5 different family members and 3 nights of complaining for Guest Services to even attempt to recognize our issue. The first time my husband went to Guest Services he explained that we have kids who can't sleep and they said "give it a few nights". Excuse me, but I get off the ship in "a few nights". Real thoughtful. This cannot be the only time people on the 9th floor complained about this. It was just ridiculously loud and the staff had no interest in even attempting to solve the noise issue with the club and counted on the fact that we'd be gone in a few days. The wait staff was completely disorganized and slow, the bar staff was unresponsive and distracted, often leaving guests waiting for 10 minutes to order a drink. During dinner, our large group was always split up to two tables (which was fine) but most nights one table would finish their appetizers before the other was able to even order their food. At Teppenyaki, we were the first table to sit in the restaurant and the last to get any service. We sat there for 15 minutes before anyone greeted us, about another 15 minutes for drinks to arrive, and we were definitely the last to eat. Some restaurants were so unorganized, we had several waiters trying to take our food and drink orders and we never knew who our actual waiter was. Often times we had to remind them someone else took our orders. The food was good in the restaurants we had to pay for, but was nothing special in the buffet or freestyle locations. The pools were small and overcrowded, you literally have to sit thigh to thigh with strangers to get any action in the water. If you do book this ship for your next vacation, try to avoid interacting with the staff, eating, drinking, and trying to sleep and maybe you'll enjoy yourself. Read Less

I apologize for the length, but it's worth the read if you are seriously considering this ship. I am 17 years old and this was my ninth family cruise, first on NCL. We cruised for 7 days from NY to Bermuda. To start off, I traveled with 21 people as my grandmother spent over $25k just to be treated RUDELY by the absolutely abhorrent staff on this ship. I highly doubt many teens take the time to write a review on these sites, but the experience was so horrid that I had to. First of all, this ship is VERY crowded. There are two pools, both small, and one is only accessible to adults. God forbid a child would step in the pool to say "hi" to his/her mom or else the security watching like a hawk would YELL and SCREAM at them to get out. This happened to my nine year old brother and five year old cousin. Everywhere else I just felt like I had to squeeze through crowds of people and the hallways- don't even get me started. My aunt has infant twins and brought along a wide double stroller. It JUST fit in the hallway, but if housekeeping had their cart out, it was nearly impossible for her to get to her cabin. Not that there is much to be done about that, it was still a pain. One of the biggest problems my family had was the LOUD, BOOMING music coming from the Fat Cats jazz lounge on floor 8. Our eight cabins were on floor 9, and as I mentioned, we had a total of three infants and three younger children in our party. Every night the music would SHAKE the room it was so loud, causing the kids to wake up. After endless calls to guest services by the parents, all we got was a mess of strawberries delivered to our room and the response "It will end at 1am each night". Not even so much as an apology. Their concern took ages to be addressed and by then it was the end of the trip. When we docked in Bermuda, I personally had my worst encounter ever on a vacation. As we were leaving the ship, everyone has to go through the normal process of swiping their cards. There is also a policy that no one under 18 can leave unaccompanied; we completely understood that. My entire family left together (including my parents) but I stayed in the back of the pack to let my aunt with the babies to get through before me. There were three lines to swipe your card, so I went to the one next to my mom since there was a shorter line. Nothing out of the ordinary. I swiped my card and proceeded to walk through, but the security guard stopped me and asked if the woman who went before me (my aunt) was my mother. I said no and said my mom went through the aisle next to me and pointed to her going down the ramp behind us. He CONTINUED to ask if my aunt was my mother then started asking for my room number. He kept accusing me of traveling unaccompanied and I began to get frustrated because I figured my entire family was a good distance away now. I pleaded the security guard to get my mom before she got officially out of the gangway and he just STARED AT MY FAMILY WALKING AWAY AND CONTINUED ACCUSING ME. He kept telling me to calm down even though he REFUSED to listen to what I was saying and kept cutting me off. I honestly don't think he understood much English, which is appalling. Luckily, one of the other guards said, "Just let her go." I was too angry to get the man's name. I personally don't like confrontation like that, and the man made me SO upset and caused me to strain my voice from incessantly yelling. The last major issue happened to my entire family. The eight grandchildren were trying to take a professional photo on the white ottoman with our grandmother. The photographer was rude at the start for no reason. She yelled at my five year old cousin for holding a small clutch purse and claimed "there was no room". She started commanding us without being direct in who she wanted where--she was rash with my 70 year old grandmother and 10 MONTH OLD INFANTS. My adult cousin grew upset with the woman, which caused her to THREATEN TO CALL SECURITY ON US. She then yelled at my aunt to move even though she was helping her infant children get situated. Our picture came out with heads cropped off :) When we asked for her name, she shoved her name tag in our faces and said, "Just take a picture" in a harsh tone as if she thought she wouldn't get in trouble anyway. Since there were so many issues we encountered, I'll just briefly list the rest: -Photo gallery: My younger teen sister was taking a picture of one of our pictures (we've done it on other cruises, the photo of the photo doesn't even come out well so who really cares) but the worker was SO RUDE in telling her that it wasn't allowed. He continued to follow us around the gallery like a stalker. I watched another man yell at other girls for the same reason and demanded he WATCH THE GIRL DELETE IT FROM HER PHONE. A bit invasive? -Waiters/Bar service: VERY slow. Waiters not that friendly, and there's so many serving you that you don't know who is who. Hardly any drink servers walking around poolside. Half our party would be ordering dessert and the other would be waiting for our appetizer. Waited 15 minutes for some grated cheese. Coffee wouldn't come until dessert was over. -Random employee yelled at my brother and sister for running (because the floor was so hot) on the jogging track. ON THE TRACK WHERE PEOPLE ARE MEANT TO RUN. -The "washy washy" girl standing at the entrance to the Garden Cafe was much ruder than necessary in asking me to put pants over my bathing suit to enter. -Entourage (teen club) worker very nasty and unwelcoming. My friends and I would meet up each night in the area outside the teen club and wait to go into Spice H2O, the adult deck. She would always nastily tell us to come in the teen club or leave the area, even though it was a public space and we were not being loud or obnoxious. Additionally, my 10yo brother, 9yo brother, and 5yo cousin wanted to join Splash Academy to be together and still make new friends. Apparently, each were in a different age group and would have to be separated. Needless to say they did not participate. Food was alright, per my family, much better in the places you had to pay for (of course). But the service was still just as poor. A lot of the amenities and shows cost a lot of additional money. Rock of Ages was very good, I must say. Nothing on the ship is anything special; however the ropes course is fun as is the Svedka Ice Bar (that costs $20 per head). Our best times were had off the ship in Bermuda. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE RISING SUN CATAMARAN EXCURSION, BEST PART OF OUR VACATION. Ultimately, my aunts, cousins, and mom wasted SO much of their vacation time at Guest Services, who were NEVER helpful. They would have them fill out complaints to put in a little box, hardly ever apologized, and brushed us off for as long as possible. We saw many other people struggling with them and even heard about fist fights breaking out on board and security hardly getting involved. Not until my family has been writing poor reviews online have we been noticed or addressed by NCL. Royal Caribbean and Carnival have provided EXCESSIVELY BETTER experiences, service, dining, and entertainment. We plan to never cruise with NCL again. The quality was inferior, and there were only a handful of staff members who actually cared about the customer (and I remember my experiences with them just as well). With over 1000 crew members, I would suspect that the automatic service charges/tips have something to do with their unfriendliness; they don't have to work hard for the money! Well they didn't get that $13/person/day charge from my family :)))))) In the end, we still found a way to simply enjoy the company of our family and new friends and to make our own memories. Just came home today so writing this while it is fresh in my mind. Food in regular dining areas was not good and only some of the pay restaurants were really good; the Brazilian Steak House was very good as was the Japanese Hibachi, Italian was not good. This ship was laid out horribly and there were not enough public spaces. One pool on the entire ship (for 4600 guests. We saw SEVERAL fights break out for chairs around the pool (staff looked but did nothing to resolve anything). I myself got to the pool between 6:30 and 7am to ensure we had chairs and most chairs were gone by 8am. Anyone under 21 can not use the pool and lines for the water slides were over 2 hours long so the teens really had no way to swim or cool off on the ship. The quiet adult area (Spice H20) away from the noise and screaming around the main pool offered no shade and only a water fall feature to cool you off. Guest services told me I could purchase an umbrella if I wanted to after I asked what happened to the 3 umbrellas I saw there 2 days earlier (they even attempted to tell me that guests must have brought the umbrellas with them). Even though kids were not permitted in the pool (so none of them hung out there; there was a young kids sprinkler/water area) they insisted on doing a Nickelodeon thing every afternoon in the adult pool area with people drinking heavily which made zero sense and was ridiculous/annoying and certainly not a place to bring young children sadly the lousy layout of this ship leaves this as the only stage where this can be done they should do without it. The service was sub-par the waiters on Royal Caribbean walked around with trays of the drink of the day on Norwegian we had to flag down a waiter and they were clueless about the drink of the day and overwhelmed. Celebrity was docked in Bermuda with us for all 3 days and we met several Celebrity people at beaches, ferry and restaurants they all said everyone from my ship who had cruised before said never again with Norwegian and hated this ship. We personally found only people who had nothing to compare it to thought it was a good experience. I had a blast in SPITE of the Norwegian Breakaway not because of it. This ship is designed terribly there is no flow you feel like you are walking a maze to get anywhere and ALL of the public venues are ridiculously small. The main atrium is a small area near guest services that is 2 levels high you can sit in the Irish pub and look down. They had the same performers there every single night and while they were good who wants to see the same people every single evening. They had only 2 shows for the entire week in the Breakaway theater Rock of Ages totally inappropriate for kids and Burn the Floor which was excellent. The theater is incredibly small. We went to see Second City in an extremely small venue with wooden seats the MOST uncomfortable seats I ever sat in. Second City were terrible and not worth enduring the pain caused by the seats to watch. In the same small, cramped, uncomfortable venue was dueling pianos which on the night we saw them very good heard a great deal of mixed reviews depending on what night you saw them. Other than that there was nothing to do in the evening. I was back in my cabin most evenings by 10:30 at the very latest many times earlier which was not a bad thing since I had to get up at 6 in order to get a seat in the shaded area by the pool. This ship was a HUGE mistake for Norwegian and the only reason it is big is because they have smushed a ton of rooms on there the pool area which is a prime destination on sailing days was ridiculously over crowded, the flooring incredibly hot, had too few waiters and the noise level was off the charts but sadly was the only place that offered shade if you wanted to be outside during the day so we were forced to sit there. I spoke to dozens of people who all felt the same way anyone who liked it said it was their first cruise from ship layout, to service, food, rooms, activities, shows Royal Caribbean wins hands down. We met a couple who have sailed NCL several times (Gem class) and said they would not go on the Breakaway again if you gave it to them for free must say I agree. The teen club was better on Norwegian according to my 15 year old but she had a blast on Royal as well so I would not let that be the deciding factor. Hope this helps someone! Read Less

My husband and I, along with our 13 and 9 year old boys, took our first cruise ever, which was on the Norwegian Breakaway ship. In short, we will never cruise on Norwegian or any cruise line again after this experience. We were surprised that the quality of food was so poor and the selection, especially for children, was so limited. My husband and I certainly did not have to worry about putting weight on because the food was just terrible. The only dining that was good were the specialty restaurants (La Cucina and Teppanyaki). The complimentary dining at the Uptown Grille was the only restaurant that was decent. Additionally, we were surprised and disgusted that the bathrooms in the public areas, as well as in our sons' room smelled like a filthy port-a-potty. The pools were very small given the size of the ship and crowds of people. The rock wall had such limited hours and required guests to "share" a helmet without providing sanitary helmet liners - also disgusting - thus, our boys did not participate in that activity. One of the water slides had a weight minimum (90 lbs), thus, our younger son was unable to partake in it. The ropes course, the evening dance parties and The Second City improv show were the only saving graces on the ship. The cruise director, Julie, and her team - Ferddie and Ricky, were talented, amazing and very engaging. Norwegian should applaud them. We enjoyed our time in Bermuda; the caves tour was fine, but small (Indian Echo near Hershey, PA was better) and the zoo was extraordinarily tiny - not really worth doing. The best part of the visit to Bermuda was the Dolphin Encounter. Our 13 year old thought he was too cool to swim with Dolphins and didn't want to do it. But, he acquiesced and both our sons participated and loved it. It was pricey but worth it. The crew on this ship couldn't communicate English so well. And the process to purchase pictures at the end of the cruise was very disorganized and frustrating. To sum it up, no more cruises for our family. It is mind boggling to know so many people who are repeat cruisers - why? Read Less

We just returned for our trip on a 7 night cruise and a trip in NY and I was so terribly disappointed by the Breakaway ship, but mostly by the Haven area which they fall flat on. You pay a lot of money for this area/suites and let me tell you---you do NOT get your $$$ worth. The only good part of it is the speedy embarkation/disembarkation but seriously--the 7 days in between... 1) Lack of food and especially healthy, good food. Here's the thing: the VIP restaurant they have in the Haven offers the EXACT same menu every single day and night--never changes! If you don't like what they offer on it-you are stuck for all 7 nights. It's ridiculous that they wouldn't at least offer a few new items each night. They very much cater to meat eaters as well..we are vegetarians and you are pretty much out of luck throughout the ship. It's all about lots of meat and fried food. 2) During a short window of time (about 2 hours in afternoon-they offer a very limited (same every single day) menu of things to eat for lunch BUT when I am paying for this sort of private VIP area, I expect they would have some sort of constant food/appetizers available and out all the time, rotating in their bar or pool area...perhaps nice variety of cheese and crackers, healthy smoothies, small sandwiches...but do you know what they had out at the private pool ALL THE TIME? Gummy bears, m&m's and cookies for kids. Seriously. Nothing for adults who are paying the bill and nothing healthy...no spa type food to be found on the entire ship by the way...no juice/smoothie bar--we had to teach the bartender how to make a real fruit smoothie...and how to squeeze a fresh OJ in the morning. I am serious. 3) I was under the assumption that this entire area did not allow children unless 18 years or older and the Haven ended up being like a daycare center. It caters to kids....I bought this area to not be around them, to have better food, to relax...it was all quite the opposite. HAVEN WAS HORRIBLE. 4) The VIP area they show in photos with a pool is actually so small, shallow (not for swimming) and they kept a cover on the entire area so no direct sun was in except for the final day which was annoying if you want the area to lay out in. I understand if it's raining but when it's not, they need to remove the top from the room!! The thermal area which you can access if you have a spa suite is open to anyone on the ship who buys passes and it was often crowded and the hot thermal loungers were taken up. I paid for Haven and we literally never once used the private area meant for us because there were TONS of children and candy and no sun allowed and no food to be found and no nice pool...Really deserve a refund for that piece of crap cruise they call a VIP area. 5) The "24 hour butler" was confusing--there seemed to be 2 guys and you never know who to ask for what and they really weren't that accommodating for being able to help you get basic food for instance--it took the butler an hour to get small plate of cheese and crackers and I asked for a glass of champagne...he LITERALLY brought me a glass--a glass only --with no champagne. Really bad for what they call "European" butler service. It is not. We have been on over 15 cruises, some high end and I thought the Haven might be a competitor to those.. Seaborne, Celebrity, etc....NO. NO. NO. They also made the ship too big and compromised on what there is to do, the size of things got smaller and you are squished now--the Epic was a better ship. I am writing this to help any others avoid disappointment or those who are looking for a child free, high end spa food type trip--this is NOT it. The buffet was the worst we have found on any ship by the way--all fried food, no make your own sandwiches or anything remotely healthy or even fresh looking. I am sure kids love it but it's not what I paid for. Tell the truth from now on so people don't want to jump ship and swim back to NY. Read Less

Day 1 checking in was very easy. Once on board the ship we found our cabin 12020 mini suite. Cabin not bad, however since the ship is only two years old there were things that could have been better. Bathroom was a nice size bit the outside of the tube was broken up. As far as the balcony ( if that is what you wanted to call it ) was so small that you had to face one another to sit on it. This was the first time I have ever saw any balcony this small. After unpacking it was time to go explore the ship. We walked around and noticed that there are a lot of very young families on board and that means a lot of rug rats running around. So if you don't mind a lot of kids than this ship is for you. The second thing I noted that people were drinking a lot of liquor and I mean a lot, when I went to the bar and asked for 6 bottles of water I had to repeat it many times ( six bottles of water is $27.00) I think much younger people had the free liquor card and was putting it to good use. For dinner this first night at sea we ate at LeBristo there is a fee ( $20.00 PP and if you order lobster it another $10.00, French of course) the food was excellent and we plan to go there again on the last nigh of the cruise. After dinner we walked around the ship. My advice is stay away from the casino ( decks 6,7 & 8 ) the smell of smoke is so bad you need a mask. Well it was time to call it a night. Very long day. Day 2 first day at sea Got up around 7:00 the ship was nice and quiet, shower there was a lot of hot water. Went to breakfast at Savor, this is a small dining room on the 6 deck. This was the place to go for a quiet breakfast, however in a short time the families with the rug rats started to arrive and it was my time to exit and find a nice quiet spot on the ship. Deck 8 is that perfect spot. Nice chairs to sit and watch the ocean and read. It is a very beautiful day at sea. The sun is out and the breeze is very soft, no clouds and very calm waters. It's now 11:00 and I see the drinkers are walking around with there cocktails all ready. We also have to move from this nice stop because there are painting the rails and the smell is to strong for me, maybe it's time for a walk. Well it 1:30 and going to lunch in the Taste restaurant. It is a small area mostly 50 and older ( no kids ) thank god. After linch we went up to the zoo called the Garden Cafe just to see the goings on and it's very interesting. Thousand of kids running in every direction, people eating with their mouth full of food and there mouth was open to put more food in before they swallowed what they were eating. Left there very fast. If I did not know better I would think I was on a carnival ship ( and I never been on one ). One other thing even, through their is an area were people can smoke outside, people are smoking all over outside and if you don't like it, than you have to move ( and I did 3 times today ). I'm resting for dinner, I'll take a bath, don't have to waste my make up for this crowd so I don't have to do that. We are going to LaCucina tonight, this is another fee $15.00 PP. food was good in the Italian restaurant, but very filling. Tomorrow another day at sea can't wait for the rug rats to be running up and down the hall. I want to trip them so bad LOL. I took a sleeping pill at 9:30 pm and at midnight I was still awake because on the noise. I I did not know better I would think I was on carnival and I never been on that line. Day 3 at sea all day We are one hour ahead of east coast and I'm up at 6:00, it's nice because it so quite. I don't think I said that the music is so loud by the pool , and that is deck 15 you can still hear the music on deck 8 were we sit. Well off to breakfast , We were seated and it was nice and quite for about ten minutes then a family was put next to us, just two kids I'd say 4 & 5 and they starter yelling and crying, that lasted about 5 minutes so I got up and left. I went to custom service desk to find out when there was a kid free zone and I was told no were none because if the parents what to go they can take the kids and yet when I called NCL to find out if a lot of kids were On board I was told they don't have that information . You mean that NCL has no clue about the number of kids since there free? Please don't get my wrong, I think kids are cute when they are well behaved. You know the old saying " you only get what you pay for" and NCL is not for me. Now I'm very nervous about the celerity cruise in February. Todays actives on board are some of the following: there recommending getting Restylane or Botox, who the hell would go on a cruise to get this? We they say sometimes you feel like a nut. You could also have a behind the scenes tour of the ship, it's funny I remember when it was free not there is a fee for that. Cruising has taken on a hole different meaning from years ago. What happen to the days you would get dressed up for dinner? I quess the cruise lines found that if you say come casual ( jeans and shorts for dinner )and enjoy all the food you can stiff in your face then people would come, oh and by the way bring your kids for free. Well I got much need sleep this afternoon, after taking sleeping pills for two nights and only getting two hours sleep you can see that I needed it. After getting ready for dinner, tonight was the steak house Cagney's. This place is 30.00 PP, Dinner was very good, however dinner in all the specialty restaurants on board any ship is good. We have not seen any shows on board because you must make reservations to get in. Well it's time to go back to the cabin and get some rest before the rug rats start running up and down the halls tonight. Day 4 We are in port at Bermuda, just got a call from home saying that are car must be moved and when I told them I checked on Friday to see if I had to move it I was told they had no idea. PLEASE, if I ever say in going on a cruise again stop me. Took the bus to Hamilton from royal dock ( bus are not that interesting here compared to Philadelphia LOL )the main city in Bermuda, it took about 60 minutes and was very colorful walking around the city not much has changed since we have been here 5 times. We decided to take. a ferry back to royal dock, travel time was 20 minutes. I did see one old drunk and he did not ask for money. Going to take a nap for now. Dinner tonight is at Teppanyaki ( Japanese this one is $25.00PP will let you know how it was. Maybe if I drink a lot of cocktails I might see thinks differently. Can you believe that today was the first time I met my cabin Stewart and the only reason I met him is because my AC was not working real well and the cabin was hot. I asked him for some thin rope, he had a puzzled look on his face and I said it's to trip those little rug rats when they run down the hall, and he would not give me any, I just want to have a little fun also. I wanted to see how far there rug rats could fly would fly when I pulled the rope. Dinner was very good tonight ( thank god it was not to much food, just enough ) it was also good watching the Chiefs making the food in front of you. After dinner made a phone call and then back to the cabin for sleep. Day 5 I want no breakfast, I'm sick of food, time to start cutting back. We are going on a boat ride today to see famous homes & hideaways should be fun. This was the best tour 3 hours on the water, went up beautiful coves that you could never see by land. Best think of the week, and no dam kids. Now we are on the local bus back to Hamilton for an afternoon walk. We met an interesting couple On the tour today from the suburbs of Philadelphia I would say you think you have it bad until you talk to this couple. There son was with them and he was 19, they said there in philly a lot because there son just had a heart transplant . This young man was so polite it was a pleasure talking to him and his family. I also saw something very interesting on the bus, someone young was sitting in a seat and an older person got on the bus he got up and let the older person sit down, I can't tell you the last time I saw that at home. I also notice so many women with tattoos both young and older, what's up with that, are they nuts what happens when that skin gets saggy. The only thing I would have tattooed is the liner around my eyes. I also was to to a few women and they told me that security had to come to the pool because some little kid was punching his mother. One last thing, I now feel that this line dose not want the older crowd because there are no magnifying mirrors in a the cabin so I can't see at all, I even look good with no makeup LOL. Going back to the steak house tonight so I know dinner will be good. Just have to make sure I save some wine to wash down my sleeping pill tonight, Day 6 After breakfast we walk around the royal dock yard. We also took in a show at Dauphin quest and that was fun. Met a few couples on the celebrity ship that's in dock and we were comparing notes about the two ships. Very few kids on there ship. I also went to the market to see how prices are here since everything has to be shipped in. One litter of gas $8.50 Load of bread $5.75 One gallon of milk $6.50 Small bottle of water $1.50 Real estate 2B/2B condo start at one million dollars and you must be a native to Bermuda saw a few homes for sale yesterday, starting at 60 million. And we were told that the market is down at this time. Back on board the ship to leave at 5:00 tonight, will be back in NY on Sunday. It was not to bad but don't have to do Bermuda again after 5 times here I think that enough, and I will never go on NCL again , that was a joke. Dinner tonight will be the Italian restaurant. Day 7 Well today is a full day at sea, I really like being at sea its so relaxing however I'm not sure about this ship. In looking back do your research and sham on me for not doing it this time. I have been on NCL at least 5 times but it was never like this. I think it's good for a family with small kids because kids do go free but my days going on NCL has come to an ending. This is not the line for me anymore. Looking forward to leaving tomorrow and going back home. Tonight we are ending were we starter back at the French restaurant for dinner. Good luck in your travels. One last note, if you order room service there is a charge of $6.95 per order. I've never saw this charge before on any ship. NCL is learning the art of nickel and dine you to death. They should also do a lesson on how to conduct yourself in public, how to use silverware and how to have some class instead of Botox and restylane lessons, but they make money on that. This had to be the worst cruise we were ever on. Read Less
