We loved our whole trip. Flew into New Orleans the day before and had a nice stay in the hotel included in the price. Transfers to the boat was very nice and easy. Once on board were meet with snacks and we went to our room. Bags waiting for us. We could not stop at our first location and used that day to cruise up the river to Baton Rouge. We did the hop on hop off bus tour. Drivers were great and the first four hours a local guide is on the bus. Second stop St. Francisville. We had to dock the other side of the river and bus over the river to the little town. We visit the Myrtles Plantation included in the hop off hop on bus tour. While there be sure to visit Grandmother's Button store. Next stop on the river was Natchez and another day of hop off hop on touring. Last stop was Vicksburg and again we did the hop off hop on tours. The tours were great. During the day when not on land we spent a lot of time on deck 2 watching the river and life on the land. The food was great and loved the Buffet for Breakfast and lunch and dining room for dinner. Lots of good food to eat. Our room was an inside room on deck 3 and was a good size. Bathroom was good but not a lot of storage for items. Our attendant was great at cleaning the room and making sure we had enough coffee for us. The talks about the river given by steve was very interesting. Nightly shows were enjoyable. We had to stop in Baton Rouge on our last day of river cruising to New Orleans. There was a tugboat/barge wreck down river. We ended spending the night in Baton Rouge and in the morning we were bused back to the airport. Over all we totally enjoyed our cruise. Looking forward to our next cruise. Read Less

So before I start this is my first review I have ever done. This alone should show my dissatisfaction with this cruise line. After being on multiple cruises we decided to book a Norwegian Cruise, as we had not been on this cruise line yet. Typically we do one cruise per year with a group of friends. This year we had a group of 13 leaving out of New Orleans, LA traveling to Cozumel and Progresso Mexico on the Norwegian Getaway. Having been to both ports we all knew what to expect, however, everyone was excited for a new cruise line that we were thinking was an upscale cruise. This was not the case. I'll start with the ship. The ship was very well kept. It had a different layout than we were used to but no big deal. Typically the Atrium surrounds all the busy floors. The Atrium was a total of 3, maybe, 4 levels. These levels stretched both forward and aft with different venue's in each floor. My complaint about this is the venue's were extremely small, not near big enough to accommodate everyone. The bars, especially the live entertainment, such as Sid's Pour House, was typically shoulder to shoulder with no room to sit. This bar was by far the best spot on the ship. The staff. Horrible. Any time we went to any staff member whether it was the bartender, customer service, waiter/waitress, etc. we all felt as if we were an inconvenience to them. Very few staff members seemed happy to be on the ship. As a matter of fact, one of the servers from our specialty dining stated this was his first Norwegian and would also be his last the day we arrive back to port. This shipped was understaffed. On the Pool Deck there were 2 bars surrounding the pool. These bars typically had only 2 bartenders in each. Drinks on average took 15-20 minutes to get. There were very few bartenders walking around on the top decks as well, where the lounge chairs were. IF you were lucky enough to find one it was most likely a 30 minute wait. Nickel and Diming. There was always something they would try to charge you for, even if you had paid for it. We had purchased the beverage packages as well as upscale dining, etc. Well folks, be prepared to spend more money when you get on this ship as it in no way is all inclusive. The spa, what a joke. Upwards of $200 for a spa pass, and yes you have to pay this if you want to do something as simple as the sauna or steam room. Walking past the spa was like being chased down by a timeshare salesman. Food. Woof. All I wanted when I got back was a basic fast food cheeseburger. I would rather eat a lifetime of frozen dinners than set foot back in their buffet. The food was sub-par for any standard. The main dining was OK but nothing to write home about. Upscale dinning's were a little better but I could just as easy go to a restaurant at home or cook my own meal and be just as happy. After meeting multiple people on the cruise that had the same complaints we knew there was something wrong and it was not just us. I will gladly take a Carnival any day over this line. Norwegian should do a better job as advertising themselves as a "budget" cruise line. If you are truly looking for a good vacation Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, or Princess cruises offers a hands down experience, My advice - #nevernorwegian Read Less

Prior to this cruise I had not cruised on the Valor Before, however I did cruise on the Pre Inaugural sailing of her older sister the Carnival Spirit. I was somewhat concerned by others commenting that the ship is showing its age. Upon boarding I did a quick ship inspection and I was very impressed. The ship is not new, but with that said I found the floors, furniture, and ships interior all to be in excellent condition. Also we had two cabins and I found both to be in very good condition. Comfortable mattresses, couch and chairs in room in good shape, clean bathroom, and very functional closet and drawer space. The one major drawback to this cruise is not just limited to the Carnival Valor, but all the Carnival ships I have sailed on in the past couple of years, that being the quality of both food and service. To me both began their decline shortly after the retirement of former CEO Bob Dickerson, or "Uncle Bob" as he was known by employees. On our five night cruise there were two nights I did not eat what I ordered. One was the Beef Lasagna which had zero texture. It was almost mush. The pasta was was overcooked and there was no flavor at all.I ordered another entree and it was fair. The other was the Southern Fried Chicken. I am from the South and I know fried chicken. I got a small breast and drumstick i think it was, but did not keep it long enough to find out. The chicken was very dry inside, and the outside was way overcooked. It is evident that they cooked it at too high a temperature. In the Buffet lines I found the quality to be about the same. The selection also left something to be desired. Also I remember the good ole days of eating all the deserts because they were all so good, but now I try all of them to find one that is good. In all my life I have never had cheese cake that was anything like the stuff on the ship. It seems that it is less cheese and more cake. The only other negative I can think of is the Endless Bubbles program. Compared to RCCL sodas the Carnival program is bad. There are no soda machines so you have to wait in line at a bar and you end up with a warm soda being poured onto ice. Also in the Buffet areas nobody comes along anymore to take drink orders, so you have to get your food, then go outside and stand in line at a bar to get a warm soda on ice (can you tell this is my pet peeve?). The warm soda melts the ice and you have a watered down soda. Carnival needs to consider investing in the self serve soda machines like they have on RCCL. One more thing to note is that in the dining room the waiters used to unroll your napkin and place it on you lap and hand you a menu already opened. Minor thing but they do not do that any more. Also on evening turn down they would always place a mint on your pillow and they no longer do that either. Some of these are small things, but it would be wise to remember that a lot of little bits creates a gob.Other than these items I was happy with the cruise and would consider cruising on the Valor again. OK.. One more thing. I find cruise directors to be so full of themselves. They remind me of the plastic game show hosts. So fake. I took a Carnival last year and had a cruise director named "Jess From The U.S. This young lady was such a delight. She did not try to be the star of the show. She was herself and came across as being real. We need more cruise directors like her. Read Less

We choose this cruise because our friends son’s senior trip. We were all celebrating. This cruise has us wishing we’re were back on the boat. We had so much fun. The boat was very clean. We had a balcony cabin and it was just perfect.we went to a little bar early in our trip called Sid Norman’s the Guilty Pleasures was playing 80’s music. This show was amazing and we went back every night they were playing. It was so much fun and the kids on stage are amazing. We left with wanting more. They did a great job it was fantastic. Debra, Grant, Niki and Billy put on an amazing show time after time. I also want to pay kudos to the Japanese restaurant we eat at. The name started with a T. The food and entertainment was really good. The island of Belize also won us over. The white sand beaches. We can’t wait to go back. Read Less

NOLA was a blast as always, got there the day before. We parked at Fulton Garage without incident, no shuttle wait at all. Breakaway embarkation at noon was fast, painless. Traffic there is a nightmare with the construction. I have no idea if parking at the pier was any easier. Stayed in cabin 12780. Excellent location right by the front stairs. A forward facing angled balcony, the extra room out there was nice. Little to no noise from the kiddie, elevator area and on spring break, forgot it/they were there. The balcony was not too windy, very pleasant. I found the provided soap, wash, and conditioner adequate, your mileage may vary. The tap water was perfectly fine, taste free. Bring 3 way plug extenders vs power strips - they will confiscate those if they find them. Glad I brought both. We also brought a Bluetooth speaker, no one complained about the music, but maybe that was just our exceptional taste. La Cucina was our favorite Specialty dining followed by the Cirque dinner show. (Cirque menu is a planned Surf & Turf) Word to the wise, they really were pushing the T-Bone at Cagney’s and La Cucina. Steer clear of that & you will be OK. In fact the La Cucina filet with ravioli on top was the best I've ever had! No kidding! The entertainment was all great. Rock of Ages is not to be missed, unless you are prudish, lol. The Glow party was a blast, the teens on spring break did take that over a bit, all good! The UBP was amazing, the bar waits by the pools could get long, however there are a couple carts that had beer and drink of the day, those never had lines. The best bar IMO is Maltings. Also try the bar next to it with the Aperol! Yum! Boardwalk Syd Normans bar is 2nd for the laid back outdoor view. Early morning bloody marys are found only at the Atrium bar. Grab one before going to Savor for a nice sit down breakfast at 7:30… did I say early? The sushi at Wasabi is awesome with great prices, great for a light boardwalk lunch. The Rock N Roll with rock shrimp kicked it! The noodle bar was a good too, and included! The main pool can be a crazy sea of humanity, fun for a bit, but not very relaxing. Chair hogging is ridiculously rampant. We simply did not stress over it and could always find loungers in the sun or shade somewhere. When we were done we packed up and found a different & sometimes more fun location later, no problem. Spice H20 at the back was our go too place, and generally the bartenders there were pretty quick. The front of the ship has an area too next to Vibe. That bar is smaller and can get a line. Most folk at all bars were courteous and paid attention to who was next, vs thirstiest. O'Sheehans was always fun, good bar food, TVs, draft beers, quick service. We always do our excursions independently. At Harvest Caye you must be off the boat first thing and get to the marina to get the first ferry to Placencia. They will not sell you 9AM ferry tickets from the ship and the ferry always gets full. On Car Rentals in Cozumel - If you rent a jeep or car there make sure the gas attendant zeros the pump out first and make sure you are clearly above the tank mark where you picked it up or you will get dinged. I always video the entire car in the presence of the rental agent at pick up too. Disembarkation was the smoothest I've experienced. So unless you have to get off super early just let the ship deal with your luggage. Read Less

Cruised with a large group (over 70 people and families) and planned trip for over a year. Between the stateroom, flights, extras and on board upgrades we spent 8,000 on this vacation and felt like we were cattle the entire week. Getting on the boat: was raining in Nola and process was ok. Many people pointing you in what direction to go but otherwise went smoothly. Once on the boat you are kind of clueless as to what to do or where to go. Staterooms not open yet so do you eat? Drink? Explore? None of the crew was especially welcoming. Playing loud party music as we got on does not suppliment for genuinely happy crew members who look forward to taking care of you. While the boat is still in the Mississippi, you have to pay tax on any drinks you order. Ports were terrible. Not enough time to truly enjoy anything and not a lot of culture or excursion options. We went to a resort in Cozumel, kids had fun but the place was run down and the food was absolutely terrible, no taste at all. Belize was nice but wow do they find ways to nickel and dime you at every corner! If you have the premium beverage package be prepared to pay out of pocket all day for your drinks on this private make believe island owned by NCL. When we docked at costa maya, there were two other ships at the port. 12,000+ potential people walking around a small, crowded money trap and only 3-4 hours to do it. Absolute mess. Dining options: Here’s another chance for NCL to Create and illusion for you! Freestyle dining is anything but. They claim to have upgraded restaurants for an additional charge. The problem is, you can’t get in to any of them. You see, you have to make reservations for most of these upgraded dining options and by the first night of the cruise, our party found it very difficult to book a table at any of these places. When we finally got a table at Ocean Blue and wanted to add a few more to our table, we were told the restaurant was booked for the night. Weird considering that only 2 other tables were seated during our 2 hour meal. The real truth is they don’t want you to eat there!!! They want you at the buffet or main dining rooms. It was the best meal we had on the ship. Buffet was repetitive and main dining rooms were only ok. Also are at the sushi place and Shanghai noodle and sheehans. We also ordered room service which they charge an additional $8 to deliver your order which is nearly guaranteed to arrive way later than quoted estimate and cold. Oh and if you want a pop from room service you have to pay extra for an entire can even if you have the premium bev package. Service at the bars was terrible. Long lines and not enough staff and sometimes waiting 30 minutes for a drink order. Pool deck was crowded and pools were overcrowded. Made room to room calls and was charged $5 for each call. Tried to download the on board app but never successfully got it to work which made communication with our children difficult when they wanted to be up at the sports court or running around with their friends. They also don’t tell you the app costs $10 to download so we were billed $40 for something that never worked the entire trip. Arcade was small and another way for you to spend more money on board. The extra game shows (deal or no deal for example) were fun but again, $25 card to play and you’d think everyone might win a little something but only about 10 people won a chance to win something on the days we attended. The friendliest staff we encountered were in the duty free shopping area. Getting off the boat they herded us through the casino area which smelled terribly of stale smoke, not ideal for children or families. Overall totally unimpressed with the cruise ship, staff, and all aspects of this trip. Read Less

This is our fifth year cruising over Spring Break. Our kids are grown so it’s just us, but there are always lots of kids onboard over Spring Break. We park in the Fulton Place Garage and the construction on the Convention Center side caused us a nearly two hour delay in parking! Not sure how long the construction will be going on. Call first if you plan to park here. After finally parking and shuttling to the port, we were late. The good thing about being late is that you move right along. We never sat down. Through check-in, security, and up the ramp onto the ship. Then up the elevator to Deck 11 to our first-ever balcony. I sat down and thought it would be good to take a picture of us on the balcony. That’s when I realized I had left my backpack in the x-ray machine. I grabbed my passport and RAN. It was now after 3:00 and at 4:00 the ship pulls out. The people inside were very nice but also very professional. They asked me to identify it, then describe the contents. Once they were satisfied they directed me to a desk where I signed for it and ran back to the ship! Crisis averted! We sailed on the Dream in 2017 so we recognized a lot of the traffic patterns. We are early risers and head to the Serenity area on the Sky deck and secure chairs with pads on the sea days to sun and read. It’s quiet there. Our cabin was 11273. It was convenient but there was a slamming door somewhere and it would wake us up. It seemed to slam a lot at 3:00 a.m. I sleep with earplugs and one night the vibration of the wall woke me up. I probably should have complained, but I didn’t. The cabin was plenty spacious for two and the couch and sit-under were both nice features. We did not use the balcony much. I would do a balcony again for the sunlight but it wasn’t as much of an upgrade as I imagined. We ate in the dining room maybe four times. It was good. Service was good too. We had 6:00 early dining and next time we may opt for anytime dining. On elegant nights we skipped it and hit the Lido, which was good. One day we stayed ashore until 5:30 so we grabbed a burger and it was remarkably good. The shows were as we remembered. The 80’s show was SO GOOD. As was the Motown show. Skip Flick. We walked out. Many did. Gary the Cruise Director did a good job of keeping you informed but not annoying you. Service everywhere was excellent. Towel animals to the max! Especially on Friday morning. Ports were busy with Spring Break. Montego Bay – we grabbed a taxi (bus) to Doctor’s Cave Beach. Maybe $7 each. Once there it was $6 each to get in $6 each for a chair and $6 for an umbrella = $30. Make sure you take a lot of $1 bills to tip people. No one seems to have any change. We got there early and stayed as long as we could. Lunch right there was very good. Grand Cayman – I don’t remember tendering here but we did this time. There were plenty of water taxis and they moved quickly. We were planning to go to the public beach but the driver persuaded us to try Royal Palms. It was maybe $2 each to get in, but then it started. $15 for an umbrella. $12 each for chairs. And then all the food prices are in Cayman dollars, so add 25%. Lunch was $60 US. The beach was beautiful and water as clear as it gets but this was expensive compared to the free public beach with local guy renting chairs cheap and the liquor store across the road. Next time we will go there again. Finally Cozumel – we couldn’t get off the ship until 10:00. So by the time we taxied to Paradise Beach, it was pretty full. We did find chairs and it’s only $3 each so we LOVE it there. There were seven cruise ships in port and the lunch service was SLOW. But in the afternoon it thinned out and we moved around and enjoyed the pool and the beach. We will be back next year. What can you say? For less than the cost of a condo in Florida for the week, we wake up each day in a different country! I’ve already booked Carnival for Spring Break 2020. We’ve done Norwegian, Royal Caribbean and Carnival and shocked even ourselves that we like Carnival the best. It seems to be the best value. Read Less

Tipped bar tender first night and he took care of us. Specialty dining was okay overall. The Teppanyaki and Cagneys were excellent. The Brazilian steakhouse was just okay. Dining in Mannattan Room was fine and we could have ate there every night. The house band at the pour house was awesome every night! The comedians were good the one night we went. Rock of Ages was not very good. The talent was okay but the story stunk, not sure why it was a Broadway hit. Since Costa Maya was short day just hung out at Tropicante. Had a great time. The only bad part was trying to watch NCAA tournament games. On previous cruises it was on the big screens. This time it was an afterthought on small TVs with no sound !l Read Less

We got a good price for a ocean view room but really booked this to see New Orleans. Harvest Caye was the biggest let down as everything except the pool and the beach costs extra and your drink package is no good off of the ship. For me paying $5.00 for a beer is a bit much. On Harvest Caye that beer was $8.60. We enjoyed the beach and then went back on the ship and had a drink. Cozumel is a good shopping port if you like to play the game. My wife purchased earings for her sister that started out at $580.00 . 2 beers 4 shots and walking out of the store once we paid $160.00. 1 ct. mystic topaz stone with a diamond crown. Did we pay to much? Dont know but it was fun. Costa Maya had us and two other ships at the same time. You couldnt even walk down the street withought bumping into someone and if you are wearing a full backpack do not go into a store. A lot of those shops will charge you for the items that you break. The cabin 5828 was small but always clean. Had a problem with the outlet in the bathroom and it was fixed right away. Sea days did not have enough things to do in the ship and not enough pools for number of people. Bars were always busy and all seemed to be short staffed. We had 3 speciality dining included and went to Moderno twice. Both times had problems getting something to eat. Second time there asked for the head waiter and finally got served. Cagneys was much better. The ship itself was great except for allowing the smoking at the casino. O sheenhans was right above and you could not get away from the smell. The one positive thing that impressed us was that in our last 19 cruises this one was the quickest on and off that we have ever had. We waited maybe 10 min for our number to be called to get on and we walked right off at the end of the cruise. Read Less

This was a spring break trip for our best friends family and we were invited to go along for the ride. What a great decision! We had never cruised before so didn't know what to expect but it turned out to be one of the best vacations we've ever had. The Breakaway ship and crew were incredible, the options on the boat amazing, the entertainment top notch, and the overall experience couldn't have been better. Our cabin was clean and comfortable and plenty large enough for 2 people. It was so nice to come back to a freshly cleaned cabin every day. The food on the boat was delicious and plentiful as were the beverages. With a boat full of passengers, the bartenders did a fabulous job of keeping up with the demand. We loved Belize and had great shopping adventures in Cozumel and Costa Maya. I can only say we will definitely cruise again and Norwegian will be the first cruise line we look at. The service, entertainment, and value of our cruise made the trip perfect for us. Thanks so much for making everything so enjoyable and memorable. Can't wait for the next one! Read Less

The trip overall was enjoyable because of the fun group we traveled with, but the Norwegian Breakaway ship had WAY too few crew members to support the number of guests on board. Significant wait times for everything. Primary point of issue was the severely understaffed bar/drink areas. Doesn't matter if you would like a soft drink, beer or mixed drink, you should plan to wait 5-15 minutes in line EVERY single time you want something not offered at the buffet (water and juice). Almost no walk around/order service. You need to go to the bar and wait in line. Your kid? They need to go to the bar and wait in line. Extremely disappointed in the wait times and the indifference of the crew to simply ignore folks for an extended period of time. Buffet? Crowded most of the day. Specialty dining? Reserve it day one or it is booked up. Lounge chair? Reserve your spot by 8AM or they are gone... My recommendation...try another cruise line if relaxing and having space is important to you. The crew to guest ratio was simply bad. I'll never book Norwegian again. Read Less

Chose this cruise to go with grand kids on spring break. Not a fan of the larger ships. The pool area was extremely crowded and we could not spend time in any pool with the teenage grands - they had to use the kid's pool. Had the specialty dinner package but could not use it as all restaurants were booked. The same with the shows (small theatres - too many people) Could not get into any of them. Found out towards end of cruise that many people reserved dinner/show and then didn't show up. Don't think passengers should have to hang outside a restaurant or show to see if they can get in. At least with the dining, there were other options. Most of the staff was friendly, but many of them seemed to be just going through the motions. On a positive note, the embarkation and debarkation were very smooth. One of the best experiences we have had. And the excursions offered were great. We all enjoyed them. Also was pleased with the on-board texting service available. Made it easier to keep track of our large group. We have done many NCL cruises and plan to do more, but will definitely stay away from the larger ships. Read Less

This was a last minute choice, because I had business in NOLA the following week, and I’m glad we did. Faster to the Fun is worth the extra cost, if you can get a slot! Embarkation was organized and painless, our rooms were ready when we boarded, just drop our stuff off and go explore. We make our own fun in the ports, finding taxis and buses to take us to snorkeling spots and beaches...with a little research we spend more time with the locals and fell like we’ve experienced the place. The food and service in the dining rooms, restaurants, and lounges is top notch. We ate at the Steakhouse twice, so good! That said, Carnival, why can’t you do anything about the lines at the Lido buffet? I’ve never seen lines like that on any other cruise line. Breakfast would have been better if I could have gotten to the eggs in less than 20 minutes. We usually book inside rooms, and this one was comfy enough. There was some kind of weird noise some nights, though, like someone was using a hydraulic punch. We couldn’t figure it out, and none of our neighbors we asked noticed it. Staff were very professional and did a great job taking care of us. One last comment for the casino: there are tables and machines marked no-smoking, and that’s a fair enough compromise for smokers and non-smokers to share the space. It’s not a compromise if you don’t try to enforce it; it’s an insult when a member of the staff walks up to a smoker sitting at a non-smoking machine and hands her an ash tray. Don’t pretend to have a policy, if you’re saying it doesn’t matter then just don’t have one. Read Less

What an amazing ship. We went during spring break and the ship was packed, but overall the staff handled it beyond belief. Once we had all dining and show reservations made everything went like clockwork. Highly recommend dinner at six in the Manhattan Room as they had dancers perform from the show burn the floor. We also bought the thermal spa package as we knew the pool area would be packed. The spa was never crowded and met numerous friends in the steam room and thermal pool. All stops went well though our last stop was Costa Maya. Wish that was in the middle as departing at 1:30 just doesn’t give you enough time at the beach. Boardwalk has greatly improved and it is well worth grabbing a cab and getting away from the cruise port. Thought it is also greatly improved. Best shopping was Belize City, especially the port Pharmacy. Don’t listen to nay sayers who complain about everything Read Less

We chose this cruise for length and destinations of warmth to escape the long Ohio winter. This was our first time sailing Norwegian and we boarded with ease at Port NOLA. Helpful tips we wished we knew: while in port, you are still taxed on all your beverages, so hold off on all those drinks until after the ship embarks; the mini-suite can sleep 4, but the beds are left out the entire cruise making it difficult to feel like you have a living area, we wish we had just found a way to book the bigger suites as our daughters are teenagers. By far the best entertainment is the band! They rocked the shows (Rock of Ages and Burn the Floor are MUST DO’s) and made each one even better! Plus, 80’s music! Plan to take more dress clothes than what other cruisers recommend- we only took two dressier outfits and due to dress codes in the better dining rooms you will not be allowed to eat there (even the complimentary Manhattan Room) if not dressed for dinner. Food was fantastic in the Manhattan Dinng Room and honestly we would have like to have eaten dinner there every night. We tried Taste and Savor for breakfast- waste of time considering the food is mostly the same as the buffet- and everyone can get what they what. Breakfast buffet is the best time and the grilling buffet is the next best! We did not eat at any of the specialty restaurants as we decided to do more shore excursions rather than buy the package and every time we wanted to just buy the dinner they were booked up. So if you decide to pay for the specialty dining, make your reservations early! Every time we came back to the cruise ship from port we were sprayed with antibacterial stuff for our hands, and at every meal... I like that they want to stop the spread of any germs, but I’d rather just wash my hands. Every single cruise member we met always greeted us and smiled and were so friendly, I can’t imagine how they do that every day, but I appreciated it! By far, Harvest Caye is the best island escape and I would like a cruise that stopped there twice honestly. We loved Tulum and Xel-Ha... and our tour guides Lupe and Temo were the best! We learned so much! However, I wish we had spent the entire day at Xel-Ha and done Chacchoben for the ruins only so we would’ve had more time there! No time to shop on this excursion after a half hour tender boat ride to Playa DelCarmen and an hour bus ride- but it was still a fantastic day! We didn’t realize we were never actually going to see Cozumel by booking this excursion, but the entire family loved the trip! Book a tour/excursion in Belize City! We decided not to book on this day, and the port is fun to walk around for a shopping spree of souvenirs but lots of locals nagging everywhere we went for us to get our hair braided or take a tour, etc... eventually this made us decide to return to the boat without ever experiencing anything in Belize City. Although, if you can stop by the flea market and visit Raymond, he hand carved wooden creatures, and is the nicest person you’ll ever meet! My pelican made by Raymond is already proudly displayed in my home! The best part of this shore day was the 15 minute tender boat ride as the boats here have a lot of top seating and it was Beautiful, especially getting off the cruise ship in the middle of the Caribbean Sea! Finally, I read so many reviews that told me not to waste my money on the dolphin swim adventure at Discover Cove at Costa Maya, Mexico. Originally, I didn’t book this excursion due to the mass amounts of negative reviews...I’m so glad I changed my mind! If you do this excursion, book the earliest time slot! We had no one else around, it was absolutely amazing, you get to swim once with a boogie board and once with the dolphin pulling you, and you get to kiss, dance, touch the dolphins too! My husband decided to hike Chacchoben while in Costa Maya, and here you can actually go to the top of the ruins on the stairs (you cannot at Tulum). He said it was amazing and he even got to see spider monkeys! If you didn’t book an excursion here, the pool / man made beach area was gorgeous and the shopping here was the best! You can find some really cool authentic hand made items as souvenirs! To top it off, you must see the amazing rain/harvest ritual- not to be missed! We are considering another carribean cruise just to return to some of the places and explore more! Mandara Spa was a fantastic escape for me for a few hours with a hot stone massage... the best massage I’ve ever had, especially because she treated the areas I was struggling with the most! From the moment I arrived at the terminal I walked right in. Went straight to the check in desk and checked in. We only waited less than an hour when we were sent through the line and onto the ship. It is so amazing ! It took me over an hour to walk thru all the public areas. Ate lunch in the Garden Café and than had a few drinks. I had a solo room and was advised that the room was ready. When I checked into room 11547, I was meet by the most awesome room attendant. Her name is Ana.... She kept the room in amazing shape. Very caring and went out of her way to make it a great cruise ! Dining was great. I only ate in the "free" areas as I found this food to be very good. I went to "Burn the floor" and Rock of ages". It was good but not to my taste. They warned us that it was loud and had "bad words" and this was true. The service was great except there was some delays in getting a drink. I realized the cruise was sold out and a full ship so I expected the wait. Never took more than 10 min. I had no where to go and was on vacation. Nothing but time ! I did the FURY snorkel and beach party. This by far is great time. I did the Howler monkey and Belize zoo tour. Very informative. Harvest Kay was great. It was raining when we arrived but by 11:30 it cleared and it was fun. In Costa Maya just walked around the shops. Read Less

We had a fantastic time on this trip. However, I feel the service on NCL is slipping. Bar service was the worst I have ever experience. Getting a drink was a hassle. The definitely need more bar staff. I also felt the dining staff wasn't very happy, maybe they need a vacation. Our cabin was nice we had a balcony room and our room attendant was very very good. The entertainment was good, Burn the Floor was great fun as was Rock of Ages. We truly loved Switch Back to the 80s band, saw them twice while on-board. Entourage (the teen club) was great for our 13 year old son, he had a blast and made some friends to hang out with in the evenings. The check in process was smooth and fast however, disembarkation was a zoo. They should let people know prior to leaving their rooms if there is a problem with their on board account, etc. Definitely not a smooth process. Not sure if we will chose NCL for future cruises. I chose this cruise based on its ratings for best first family cruise. We booked a midship balcony room. Had late arrival time so parking lot was full and we had to park in overflow lot C. It took a long time to get there due to traffic and we received little direction on how to get there. Our room was ready when we finally arrived on the ship and luggage arrived quickly. Room was not as clean as I expected. Thick layers of dust/dirt around the perimeter of the room and on the counters. The bathroom and beds were very clean and beds comfortable. Loved the Cruise Director Gary. Great kids clubs and activities. For food, the Steak Restaurant was great, and you receive a free bottle of house wine if you eat on the first night. Guys Burgers and Guys BBQ Pig and Anchor were great. The Cantina with tacos and burritos were also great. The buffet was ok at best as was the evening dining. Lots of options, but food was hit or miss and most of the food was not hot. I know they are feeding tons of people so it has to be prepared ahead. Soup was always hot in the dining room. Salads were good. My son loved the shrimp cocktail. The warm chocolate cake is fantastic. Also, brunch on sea days is good as were the breakfast burritos or huevos rancheros at the cantina. All made fresh and small batch, so hot and delicious. Kids loved having pizza and ice cream 24/7 and ate burgers and fries every day! Great shows, movies, and activities. Service was good. They get to know you and your names. I was surprised smoking was allowed in the casino and in designated areas. I’m not a smoker and am not used to being in places where smoking is allowed indoors, so I didn’t spend much time in the casino. We stopped in Key West and went parasailing with Sebago Watersports. Great excursion! Freeport isn’t a great port since it isn’t walkable. You have to take a taxi or book an excursion to enjoy this stop. We took a taxi to Junkanoo Beach. It was $14 round trip per person. There is a free beach or a beach with ammeneties for $5.75/person. You can pay for food/drinks and rent chairs and an umbrella. Much better deal than paying for the excursion. In Nassau we booked the Carnival VIP Dolphin Swim and Lunch at Blue Lagoon. We waited forever! We got off the ship at 7:30AM for an 8 AM tour. We waited at the port until 9:30 AM with little direction or support before they finally lined us up and pointed toward the dock where we would need to board a ferry to the island. There were two other ships also in port with large groups going to the same place. With no one directing traffic we waited way too long! Once we finally arrived, the dolphin swim was amazing and the beach location was fun. Lunch was good, burgers, chicken, hot dog, rice and beans, corn, etc. Great excursion but poorly organized that morning. I purchased the weekly spa pass. It wasn’t worth it to me as I didn’t utilize it enough. Nice steam rooms and mineral pool and adults only area. I traveled with my two children, so the money would have been better spent on a massage or other treatment. I did purchase the relaxation package on the last day at sea as they offered a discount. I also booked a facial based on another promotion. Both services were fantastic. Days at sea were great. Lots of activities. Brunch with extended hours so no rush to get to breakfast. We were blessed with great weather, so Sun and Fun abounded. We would definitely recommend the Carnival Dream and Cruise Director Gary! Read Less

We just got back from our Spring Break trip on the Breakaway. This was our (myself, husband, 8-year-old son and 2 friends) first time sailing NCL. We have cruised Royal and Disney in the past so we were excited to try it! Overall, we were very happy with our trip and would book Norwegian again. Embarkation and New Orleans: This was a really easy process for us. The key? We arrived around 1:00 and therefore most everyone was already on board. What did that mean for us? It meant no lines, a quick walk onto the ship and our rooms were ready for us immediately. We didn't mind not having the buffet lunch since we left from New Orleans and had a DELICIOUS lunch on land before we left for the port. I would say that New Orleans on a Saturday night (we arrived a day early to make sure we weren't delayed) with an 8-year-old is not ideal. We did go to the Audobon Insectarium and while pricey, that was a lot of fun! We did enjoy all of the food and drinks available in NOLA! We recommend Deanie's Seafood. I think it was some of the best shrimp I have ever eaten!! Ship: The ship was sold out for this sailing as it was Spring Break. Since we all knew that it would be crowded, we managed our expectations. The ship is large, so there were plenty of places to go to escape the crowd. We avoided the pool deck - as if you didn't get up before the sun and reserve a deck chair, you weren't going to get one - and the pools on the sea days - way too many people on board to only have one pool. We LOVED the waterfront! This was our go-to when wanting to be outside. You could find seats in the sun or shade and all were so comfortable. We usually ended up in the couches by Shaker's Martini bar. It was awesome. This was our favorite part of the ship. I will also note that because the casino is right next to the Atrium, there is a stale cigarette smoke smell that wafts through the Atrium. We just avoided it when we could and dealt with it when we had to, but if you are bothered by smoke, this is something you should know. Cabin: We had a Family Inside Cabin. I was worried before we sailed that having the bunk over the bed would be awkward for our family of three. I am happy to report that it was more spacious than I thought it would be and it worked out fine! I loved all of the storage in the room. We had tons of closet space and lots of drawers as well. Sadly, there was little to no storage in our bathroom, so thankfully I had brought an over the door organizer that helped with that. Dining: This was our biggest disappointment on the trip! While I think we are open-minded about food, the food in the main dining room was the worst I have ever had on a cruise. It was almost inedible. We only ate there one night due to this. Thankfully, there were other options. The buffet at breakfast was just fine. Typical cruise breakfast and had everything we needed. We didn't try the lunch buffet. The dinner buffet was lacking. We felt that there were not that many choices and it was very unorganized. We ate a few times at O'Sheehans as well. The food was pretty good, but the service was terrible. One night it took us almost 2 hours to get an order of nachos and a hot dog. We were lucky enough to get reservations twice at Shanghai Noodle Bar. This was my favorite of the included food options. Get the potstickers, they were yummy!! We also had lunch at the bar in Margaritaville one sea day. We didn't use a meal plan, we just ordered the nachos ala cart ($8.99). The portions were huge and it was worth the money. We had a three meal dining plan that we purchased before sailing. We used it to eat at Le Bistro, Teppanyaki and Cagneys. We really enjoyed our meal at Le Bistro. Everything was very good and the service was good as well. Teppanyaki was our favorite specialty dining. It was such a fun experience, plus the food was great and there was TONS of food. We were stuffed! Cagney's was also good, but I have to admit I still like Chops on Royal Caribbean better. Entertainment and Activites: We spent a lot of time at O'Sheehans playing pool, darts, ski-ball, and mini-bowling. I didn't love that everything was an extra cost, but I felt like the cost to play wasn't too terrible (1.00 for darts and pool, 1.20 for ski ball and 6.00 for bowling) and it kept the crowds down. We were disappointed at the lack of trivia options on board. This is one of our favorite activities and we found that there weren't many happening and when they were they were really strange topics like "birds of the world" or "cat breeds." We made sure to book before we left so that we had reservations to both Burn the Floor and Rock of Ages. Burn the Floor was good. They dance to live music and the singers were excellent. The dancers were amazing, but since no one in our party is that excited about dance shows, it was a little boring for us. I would say go if you like dance and skip if you aren't interested in it. Rock of Ages is another story. We laughed all week about the fact that NCL warns you about the adult content in this show at least twice a day. Well, they aren't wrong. There is adult content, so be advised - I was very glad I didn't bring my 8-year-old to the show. We absolutely LOVED this show. It is funny, doesn't take itself too serious and the music makes you want to sing along. The cast was great! If we didn't attend the last showing, I would have gone again! I highly recommend going! Kids Club: Our son doesn't typically enjoy going to kid's programs on cruise ships as he doesn't love organized activities. He did enjoy the kid's club on this ship. He went two times and had fun each time. They had theme nights, but he liked that he wasn't forced to participate. He could just watch if he didn't want to play. We were able to get a pager so that if he needed us or wanted to leave, they could contact us quickly. Ports: Cozumel: We booked an excursion with an outside company (resort for a day) and spent the day at El Cozumeleno. The only trouble we found was trying to get a cab. There is not a clear taxi stand, so we had to wander around the port a bit and ask a lot of people for help. It was a great resort for snorkeling and the service was top notch. I never wanted for anything and my cup was never empty. There was also beach combing available so I had a great time finding sea glass while my son played on the beach. It was a great day! Belize City: We used Jose Tours Belize for an excursion to Altun Ha Mayan ruins and Cave Tubing. Jose himself picked us up and was our guide for the day. He was so kind, informative and awesome. I highly recommend using him! Altun Ha was so beautiful and peaceful. It was impressive to see something built so long ago. Be aware that climbing to the top requires effort- the stairs are very steep! Make sure to wear tennis shoes if you go. Afterward, we drove to the cave tubing portion of the trip. We were given lunch - a delicious grilled BBQ chicken, rice and coleslaw - and then walked about a mile through the Rain Forrest to the river. The tubing experience was incredible. This was my favorite day of our trip!! I will warn you that if you do this excursion, it does take ALL DAY as the two locations are not close to each other at all and not close to the port. I think we probably drove for at least 3 hours that day. It was nice to see a lot of Belize though! Harvest Caye: This was a nice day. We enjoyed the nice beach where there were plenty of chairs and the great pool. We didn't love having to pay for food and drinks on a private island, but we knew this before we arrived so we made sure to eat a big breakfast before leaving the ship and paced ourselves. Make sure to check out the animal encounter exhibit. They have a butterfly room and tropical birds to view and it is free to see. We really liked it and it was nice to be in the shade for a bit. Costa Maya: We made a great choice to leave the port (which is not easy as it is set up as a giant maze to keep you there) and took a taxi to Mahuahal beach. We spent our time at Tropicante and enjoyed the beautiful beach, free chairs and wifi and well priced buckets of beer. They were also offering massages for 20 for an hour, but we ran out of time. Our only disappointment with Costa Maya was that we were only there from 7-1, and we wish we could have had more time since we were having such a great time. Disembarkation: This was so great! NCL has a program that will take your bags straight to the airport and check them into your flight for you. There was no charge for this and it allowed us to not only get off the boat easier, but hang out in New Orleans a little more before going to the airport. Customs was so easy! We just showed them our passports and we were on our way. I think it might have taken us 15 minutes to get from our room to the other side of customs. Read Less

Half the staff, including those handling food, were coughing the entire cruise. More than half the passengers were sick with colds. Day 3, two of my family members caught colds. Many staff and passengers didn’t bother covering their mouths. Seemed like they were understaffed, long lines and waits everywhere, especially at the bars. Many of the staff members were friendly others seemed as if the passengers were bothering them. Our room steward rolled her eyes at us when we asked for a laundry bag. Ship had lots of activities (slides, rope cruise, etc.) but had limited hours when they were open. Rock of Ages and Burn the Floor were great shows, wish there were more shows in the theater. We enjoyed the big ship features such as the different dining options, thermal suites, shows and activities. We always cruise on large ships and they never seemed really crowded. This ship however had long lines everywhere, too many sick people understaffed, and many unhappy staff. This was our first time on Norwegian, for the price this was an ok cruise but would rather pay more and go on Royal. Or pay about the same and go on one of Carnival’s newer ships. Read Less

We chose this ship because of the many options it has for children! The lines for the rock climbing wall and ropes course were unfortunately long. The pool areas - both for kids and adults- were small and very crowded. Our kids spent no time there. We did buy an unlimited arcade card which was money well spent! Our biggest disappointment with the cruise was the negative attitude of the serving staff. There were a few exceptions but for the most part, we were treated like we were a bother and a smile or kind word was rare. The worse instances of poor service and argumentative staff were at Cagneys steakhouse and at Spice H2O. The besf part was getting off the ship-escaping the crowds and seeing new places! The stop at Harvest Caye in Belize was a bust. Man made, nothing authentic; you could have been anywhere. Loved the stop in Costa Maya. We left the port and went into the local town. Unfortunately that stop was only for a half day! Read Less

Yes, this is a huge ship with lots of entertainment options, but because another 4000+ passengers want to do the same things, you'll encounter long lines everywhere or sold out tickets, restaurant reservations, etc. Even the teen club was overcrowded, which is almost comical. After our son found out on the first night that there was a line outside of kids waiting for someone to leave in order to be let in, he never went back. It was the least personal cruise we've ever been on. I was treated like a VIP because I hosted the CruiseCritic Meet & Greet, which 150 people attended. The only reason I knew any of the staff was because of that treatment. The officers greeted me all around the ship. Our room steward did a good job but was very harried and impersonal. He only knew my name and we had all our names on magnets on the front of the door. Food and beverage service was extremely slow. Sit down dinners in the MDR or the specialty restaurants took upwards of 90 minutes. We had one "good" dinner in Taste which took an hour for 3 courses, but we watched others receiving slower service. I am gluten-free and the special diets waiter, Ravi Gupta, did an incredible job helping both myself and the chefs every day. They ran out of some of the gluten-free foods toward the end of the cruise, I don't know if it's because they didn't order enough or because they had an influx of gluten-free passengers who didn't let them know ahead of time. The buffet had pretty good quality food and they were able to accommodate me every time, though gluten-free items took a long time. There were simply not enough bars and bartenders to keep up with the demand. The beverage manager told me that they had 3000 guests with the beverage package, so there's really no way to keep up with that kind of demand. The ropes course, water slides, etc. are fun, but you really have to plan ahead or the lines are long. The activities during the day are few and far between considering the amount of passengers, and any indoor activity done in the atrium will have all seats full 30 minutes before it starts. Musicians and entertainers worked very hard and were excellent, they were the ones we ended up knowing around the ship (not the waitstaff, cruise director's staff, etc.) We are chalking it up to being too big of a ship for us and we'll go back to the medium-sized ships in the future.
