Left port out of New Orleans. Parking was $90 up front before you park. This was organized and very quick from time you pull in the garage to the time you begin boarding. 5 to 10 mins max. Once your on the boat you are immediately in tje middle of the large entertainment area. Dont let that fool you. Its kinda down hill from there. Im not going to bore you with tiny details but there are deal breakers on this ship that reviewers arent addressing and I will.!!! 

One. The food..... absolutely disgusting!!! I cant reiterate this enough. Im a foody!! I eat the weird stuff on any menu. I love seasoning and flavor...My wife is a chicken tender kinda girl who keeps its very basic..She wont even eat sea food. She could live off of a basic burger and fries. My daughters a vegetarian. Our family covers all the different varieties of eating. We all 3 sat at our table breakfast, lunch and dinner daring each other to taste the last thing we just took a bite of and then laughing once the other tried it. The only seasoning on the whole boat is Salt and Pepper!!. Breakfast...    : ( Eggs were absolutely flavorless and had gritty  watery  grits blended into them.  How do you mess up eggs!!. Every item had the freezer burn flavor to it. Unless it was cooked from scratch. God help you on those items. You would never know what the item was by taste. Nothing taste as it should except the salad. They even had watery Ranch. 5 days in a row of this breakfast lunch and dinner.!!! If you eat in the restaurants even the "gourmet" food is the same stuff on the buffet just jazzed up a little more. 

The server who delivers the food will descrobe it in a rich Italian way making you think its going to change your life... then you bite in and find yourself laughing at the taste again. You will not finish a plate im willing to bet. My son had a veal chop in the restaurant. Laughing while trying to cut it he says " must have been the strongest one in the field" lmao!!  Ok youve been warned.

 Cabins are ok. You have a bed and a bathroom and very good room service who keep everything clean. Cant complain here. The window makes a difference. You will b ed in your room a lot more than you think. I thought we'd be basking in the sun or running around the ship having fun and the room is just for sleeping.... Not on this ship!!! Theres one corney slide that gets old after the first time down.. one corney square pool that should fit 30 peoples on a boat with hundreds of guest?!?!?!. I found 5 round hot tubs. Each hot tub can fit about 7 adults. Thats enough hot tubs for 35 people.  EVERYONE IS SHOULDER TO SHOULDER.. 35 people on a bout with hundreds of passangers!!!!! 

And forget about laying out chairs. Because theres no way to enjoy the pool everyone has to lay out. Again not enough chairs or space. Every free chair has someones towel or sun glasses on them as marked territory. By day two we honestly couldnt wait to get off the ship!!!!!. There were cheesy shows to attend in the evening and then right back to your room out of boredom.  Trust me  your room matters. Youll be there. 

Don't get the drink package. Order a bottle to your room. Though $70 fpr Sky Vodka, its the biggest bottle. It will last the whole trip between two people.  Even if you have to get a 2nd bottle its way cheaper than the drink prices by tons. Theres just nothing fun to do on this boat. My 17 yo son was bored out of his mind. Our 13 yo daughter stated "i hate cruises" and this was her first!!!! 

Cozumel.. Amazing and fun. Take the ferry go Playa Del Carmin and you will wish you just flew there and stayed. But.. 4:00pm is coming and fast... after that cry your eyes out.. your going to Progresso Mexico... the arm pit of the world. Everyone is shady and just like your bargining prices they are hustling as well. Example one.. as soon as you get off the boat there are taxis offering trips to different places gor cheaper.. ha!!! Our "tour guide" was to take us to 3 differnt places for $120.. such a deal. First was Meridian City, then the Myan Ruins, then the beach.. Our trip stopped on the first stop.. Why? Because he dropped us off and never came back!!!!!!we were to meet at the drop off point at 12:30 pm. Lol we sat there until 1:30 pm shaling our heads. Caught a cab back to the city close to the boat for $18. That guy made $120 of us on a $18 drive. Of coarse the booth and cabs were gone when we got back. Decided to sit down and eat. I saw a restaurant where everyone was eating lobster. Now this is a crap poor town do im thinking lobster must be free here. Im talking huge lobster tails. First they gave us an English menu. I asked for a Spanish menu. Of coats prices were different. Tacos were $8 on american and 2.50 on the spanish menu. And yes i did the peso conversion. I swear to God 2 lobesters came to $172 American!! We laughed when he brought out our lobsters on a wood block uncooked and verbally gave us a price... my wife who speaks spanish asked an old couple how much their huge lobsters were... $32 combined!!!! We got up and walked out. Went next door and ordered tacos and margaritas. .. then the bill came. 7 tacos, 4 margaritas,  chips and guac, $108........ my jaw dropped.  The server had it written on a small card. Instead of paying him i walked to the register with him to ensure he didnt write down my CC # for later use. When i began approaching the register he freaked out and started saying something in Spanish to the lady at the register.. she holds up a ticket that he originally wrote on and says to me $65.92.... basically he bumped the price up $40 for his own tip and thought we would tip on top of that. He sheepishly walked away saying that doesnt include my services as if he knew he was caught.we gathered our stuff and got back on that boat faster than crap!!. We hated the rest of our boring trip and vowed to write this review as soon as we had service. Yove been warned! Avoid this ship and destination at all cost.

The honest truth. Ill be specific.

The room and service were the best. The staff does go above and beyond. The food for lunch is your typical hot dogs and hamburgers. The breakfast is probably the worst, the eggs are runny, omelettes are super oily. Fresh fruit is beat up pears and apples and canned peaches. The mongolian wok was good but close to an hour wait. There were long lines for the food every day I was there. The pizza was not good and they could have probably thawed frozen pizzas and those would have been better. 

The activities are not anything new or entertaining. The shore excursion was too rushed, I dont need an hour to shop, i would rather have an hour longer at the beach. There is only one kids pool and its full of kids. The service, our room was cleaned twice per day and he was very friendly. The waiters are also super friendly. The photographers are a bit pushy and rude.

Save your money.

I went into my first cruise with extremely low expectations.  It was my final college Spring Break week; I figured it would be mediocre, the food would probably stink and just overall be a cheap cruise.  The boat is on the older side of their fleet but other than that I was completely wrong.  The Carnival Elation staff was awesome.  The first day I went to the dining hall and asked a crew member where I should bus my dishes to and he said, "You're on vacation, we are taking care of everything."  It was exactly that, vacation.  The food was excellent, the room was ALWAYS clean and the shows were great.  I personally enjoyed the comedians, they were hysterical.  Overall I would highly recommend a trip with Carnival.

Spring Break Cruise

This was my first cruise.
Staff was GREAT, especially dining staff (GORAN!)
Food was exquisite. I probably gained 10+ pounds.
The rooms were not spacey, but definitely not cramped. IT GETS REALLY HOT IN THE ROOMS.
This was the ONLY thing I didn't like about the cruise.
(& the prices of drinks, I DEFINITELY recommend the Cheers! package)
Comedic acts were great. There's LOTS of entertainment, whatever your taste in.
Embarkation and disembarkation were not terrible, they kept the lines moving.

Great First Cruise!

as a first time cruiser, everyone said you will be hooked! We were. Loved every moment of it! my husband being an old retire sailor, spent years at sea. He loved it. we were traveling with 3 other couples and all our rooms were nearby. We had the Empress Deck. they had interior rooms. We had a $30 upgrade to an ocean view. Sailing out of new orleans it takes 8 hours to get out of the channel into the gulf. the further down you are, and the closer to the aft, will give you a smoother ride. we had room E160. one windy day we went up to the top decks, closer to the front of the ship. That thing was bouncing all over and we were so glad our rooms weren't up there. The crew on the ship was the most helpful, polite, friendly folks ever. Our room steward, Sokate, was amazing. I could get spoiled having my room cleaned not once, but twice a day. At nite while we were at dinner he would come in clean bathroom and fix the bed, turn down covers, leave chocolates, and leave the bed light on for us. Ronald and Patrick our waiters in the Inspiration dining room, were also top notch. two days we had windy weather and you could feel the ship moving from side to side. My sailor said if you worry yourself about being seasick, you will get sick. he said its all in your mind. not once did i ever feel sick. The food was fabulous, the service, the drinks, all were extremely good. the entertainment choices each evening was great. We truly had the best vacation we have ever had! our friends has already found a cruise for Feb 2016 for us leaving from Charleston to the Bahamas for 7 days. 5 days is just not enough!
 

AWESOME!

We decided to cruise Elation for my daughter's college graduation. I usually cruise Royal but this fit our dates and budget. I cruised this ship in 2011 and enjoyed it ok, but so much has change..not for the good. First, I was sad to see the steel drums are gone. That really welcomed you aboard and made you feel that you were on vacation from the start. No live music except the smoke filled casino area and the Duke bar a few times. The overall attitude of the staff was distant and RUDE. The service in the imagination dining for terrible on our first two night. After I complained the 3rd night and asked to sit on the other side it improved slightly. Seriously I have had better service at a Waffle House. The food overall was terrible. Our chicken was actually GREEN?? The shrimp was frozen from Sams I guess, The caesar salad dressing was so full of anchovies it tasted like cod liver oil. Let's not even get started on the rubbery fake turkey they passed off as our Thanksgiving meal. Elation needs a new chef..period...Royal C. is light years better than this on their WORST day. Our rooms were comfortable other than the scalding shower. I did enjoy High Tea on the last day. I will say their room service option is better than Royal. The comedian Muncy was fabulous but Carolyn Picard was disappointing. Try the Golden and White cities excursion, it was a lot of fun. Other than this I would Never Ever go on Elation again, not sure sure about Carnival, but doubtful.

Bored and Sadly Disappointed

This was my first "real" cruise on any ship; while the Elation is a bit older & smaller thank most ships my wife and I had a wonderful time…..was the food 5 star quality, no, was the entertainment 5 star, no….the food was good nothing fancy but good (almost cracker barrel quality)….I bright some seasoning (tony's/slap ya mama) to add to it…….the wait staff we had (Darlene, Abdul, Tata) worked their tails off to make sure that we had everything that we wanted & were beyond friendly…..these people often work 20 hour shifts & they always had a smile on their faces and a greeting for us BY NAME. The servers in the Gatsby Bar Elena & Jada (hope i spelled it correctly one was from the Ukraine and the other from India) remembered us by name as well as what we were drinking. The rooms were an ample size (we stayed on the main deck room 207) Komang (our room stewart) was there at our beckon call……they weren't huge but we weren't going to hang in the room all day anyway. I suggest you bring a power strip, some clorox wipes, & fabreeze……the rooms can get musty but i'd give them a 4 out of 5…..I don't understand how someone can't enjoy themselves when they have all the pizza & ice cream you can eat….24 -7…..in the end the cruise wasn't about how good the food was or how big the rooms were it was about the people we were with and we were determined to have a good time & DID…….one thing for sure, bring patience as areas can get crowded…..the lines move pretty quickly. The loading procedure was a little slow but it did seem that everyone arrived at the same time but the lines moved quickly& orderly…the debarkation was quick and painless….we opted to have our luggage brought down for us which takes a little longer but not tedious…we docked at approx 5:30/6, ate breakfast and were off the boat with our luggage by 9:30…again just be patient & just enjoy yourselves…..
 

First cruise

We had a wonderful time on the Elation August 9-14. There were good and less-than-good things about it, but as we said before, there's no such thing to us as a "bad" cruise! The Elation is an older ship, which we knew, but the only way you could really tell that was from our cabin...no couch (just a backless stool under the desk/dresser), very old tv set, chips in the paint/porcelain in the bathroom, medicine cabinet doesn't close all the way, but the shower was very big, great hot water (actually can scald yourself if you aren't careful!) and good water pressure, plush robes in the closet that you could use (all VERY large, one-size-fits-all), and the beds are very comfy. Our room steward, Purna, was from Bali, and he was the sweetest, happiest, and most attentive guy! Always went out of his way to call us by name and greet us any time we saw him, even way down the hallway! Enjoyed our towel animals and chocolates on the bed each night. Our cabin, and the whole ship, are kept spotlessly clean, as you would expect. So we were fine with our "cheap" inside cabin..
We used the Fulton Parking garage...that's definitely the way to go if you are driving. $8/day for parking on the top (uncovered) deck of the garage, then they shuttle you to the cruise port, pick you up after the cruise, and drop you at the garage to get your car...we were on the road 20 minutes after debarkation!
Embarkation process was very fast...we arrived at the cruise port at 11:15 am and were on the ship eating at 11:30. No lines, no waiting, no hassles...just do your check-in online the night before and print up your boarding passes/luggage tags so everything is in order when you get to the port. Cabin was cleaned and ready for us by 12:30. Luggage was delivered around 1 pm...one bag was later, but not a problem....Purna delivered it to us himself, with a big smile and apologies for being late. Debarkation was delayed a little by slightly later arrival back into New Orleans, so we got to eat a good breakfast and wait in the restaurant until our number was called. We were in no hurry to leave, so that was fine. Waited about 20 minutes in line because they were calling multiple numbers of groups to debark...got off the ship about 10:10 am, shuttled to Fulton Garage and were on the road home by 10:30.
Food was good, but not outstanding. Some things weren't very hot on the buffet, and some things were obviously left over or re-used from previous meals. Hamburgers were cooked ahead of time, so were pretty dry. The main dining room was pretty good for our nightly meals...we were put on the late dining, which we didn't really like, but the early dining was already full by the time we booked our cruise, so that is understandable. They also have an option for "anytime dining" but I'm not sure how/when you have to sign up for that - I think you have to do that when you book your cruise, if you want that flexibility. We just felt that the later dining made us miss out on a few of the evening entertainment options...but more about that later. The "elegant" night was the second night of the cruise (first sea day) and they did have lobster & shrimp, and prime rib on the menu...some reviews I saw said they didn't offer lobster, but our cruise did. Hubby got the lobster/shrimp, and said it was just OK...my prime rib was rather tough, and I had a flat iron steak and a "filet mignon" later in the cruise that looked/tasted exactly like that prime rib, just with a different sauce...like I said, I think they re-use things they have left over, so no food is wasted. But our waiters Luis and Luis were both very kind, attentive, helpful, and friendly, and we only had one other couple at our table of 10 each night (2 nights we had one other couple join us). So the food wasn't bad...we tried some things we weren't used to, like Strawberry soup (wonderful), frog legs (hubby ate those, not me..I'm not that brave), etc. Each night's menu has one item like that (something you've never tried, but wish you could) like escargot (snails...really?...I'm not that curious!), sushi, alligator, etc. So if you're braver than me, you can try that...
Entertainment was probably the biggest "disappointment" we found on the Elation. There is a Welcome Aboard show the first night, a Rock and Roll show, and a Win show at night. We sat in the balcony the first night, and it was so incredibly loud that we were miserable. So if you go to the shows stay on the main floor. Tried a few minutes of the Rock and Roll show and walked out before the first song was done (had hoped it was 50's kind of rock and roll, but way too modern for us!). Tried the Win show (game show format...how can you mess that up?), but again walked out before the end when they went to a Las Vegas-style revue. So we didn't enjoy those nighttime shows. We did a few trivia games in the daytime, and watched a little bit of karaoke, but for the most part we didn't think the entertainment was nearly as good as other ships we've been on. There was one comedian that we liked, his name is Mutzie, and he is a Christian man from New Orleans...he was clean and funny, and had large crowds at his shows, since there were a lot of families on board. He had a lot of interaction with the audience, and tended to base his comedy on talking to the people in the crowd, so everything he did was very impromptu. He liked to tease people from Alabama (putting in his "Bubba" teeth and acting like a redneck)...very funny.
There were two comedians on board, and they both did a little bit during the Welcome Aboard show so you could get a taste of their comedy...now they both did a "family-friendly" show early evening, and an "adult" show late...we steered clear of the adult one, even though Mutzie says he never cusses in his shows. There were a couple of "game show" type shows, like a Newlywed game, and a Family Feud game, but they asked some "shady" questions...we just heard a few minutes of the Newlywed game while window-shopping outside the theater...glad we didn't try those. I had heard they had some 40's swing music on the ship somewhere, but they didn't...we checked everywhere, and it was non-existent, so that was disappointing. They had lots of bingo games, and everywhere they were pushing stuff that cost extra, like shore excursions, jewelry, "coupon books," raffles, etc. There was one thing we discovered on the last day...a "piano and tea" party in Dukes lounge on the 8th (?) deck in the middle. It was actually a tea party, with table service, hot tea with a variety of herbal teas, scones, tea cakes, and tiny sandwiches (cucumber, salmon, etc) and a guy playing the piano and singing. It was "older" music, not as old as we like, but still restful and soothing while you drink tea and watch the water out the big windows. We really enjoyed that...I think they do it several times during the cruise, but it's not advertised a lot. Just check on your daily schedule for the Piano and Tea time at Dukes, around 3-4 pm.
Ports...we didn't do any shore excursions. We went to Cozumel, but have been there a couple times before, so this time we didn't go into town. Depending on what pier you are docked at (we were at Puerta Maya, the farthest one from town) there are shopping and dining places right there at the pier. Our cruise director told us we were at the newest/best pier, and that it had the most shopping places (he was right...tons of shops, and not bad prices if you want souvenirs). We went to the port/shopping talk on ship the day before (they give you ideas of where to buy the best stuff, and give away some free prizes during the talk), but it really wasn't that worth it (hubby was bored stiff). Only if you are looking for diamonds/silver/gold/jewelry/watches it might help. I only go for the freebies...and they give you a coupon for a free charm bracelet that you pick up at the Diamonds International store in port, then when you go to other stores, they give you another free charm for that bracelet. They're cheapie, but I still like the adventure of going to find all the free stuff I can...even though you have to put up with the salesmen always trying to sell you expensive stuff. So we didn't even go into Cozumel this time, but went around to look in all the shops and get my freebies. I ended up with 7 charms for my bracelet, a free necklace, and 2 pearl pendants to wear on the necklace. We walked outside the pier, past where the taxis into town are parked ($8 one-way for 4 people to take you the 5 miles into downtown Cozumel, where lots of the same shops are). Looked at a lot of junky tourist stuff, then walked back into the port area to those nicer shops some more, then got back on the ship for lunch and sat out by the pool all afternoon until the rest of the passengers came back and it got too crowded again. We really enjoyed being on the ship when most everyone else was off in port...had never done that before. The buffets were very un-crowded, you could find a table by the windows, there was nobody by the pool or in the hot tub, so we could enjoy that a little while, and the music was quiet(er) than usual. So that was a nice day!
Progreso was a new port for us...they have the longest pier (4 miles long) so once you get past the touristy shops, they have free air-conditioned buses to shuttle you into the downtown area. Once we got to town, we signed up for a tour of the town on an open-air bus. It was a 45-50 minute tour around Progreso for just $9 per person. There is only one bus, and it was just leaving when we got there, so we had to wait for them to come back for our tour, so we walked around the bus station (little shops all over). (Be sure to go to the bathroom on the ship before you go into town..."Banos" in town cost $ and are...well, less than clean!). Just outside the bus station, there was a double-decker bus, very colorful, that also does tours for only $5, but I think it only stays in the main part of town. Our tour went all around the area, showed us the marinas, naval station, schools/government buildings, even the swamp (somehow our tour guide, Fabian, was very proud of their swamp!) We were very happy that we did this "cheap" tour on our own. Progreso is a very typical Mexican town, dirty, poor, run-down, smelly...walking around the downtown section, I expected to be murdered at any moment. Ha! After the tour, we walked from the bus station down to the beach...it's only about 4-5 blocks and easy to find. Beach is pretty crowded, and tons of places they try to get you to have a massage on the beach for $10...we just put our toes in the warm water and walked around a bit, then headed back to the shuttle bus and back to the ship. Water in Cozumel is that beautiful clear aqua blue, but the water in Progreso is an emerald green color...funny how that works, since they aren't that far apart...
The pools on ship are very small and crowded. We enjoyed sitting on the back of the ship on the Serenity section...it's a little hard to find, but you can get to it by going out the doors at the end of Tiffany's (the buffet) by the pizza section. Serenity is for adults only, so no children are out there...there are 2 hot tubs, a towel station, and padded lounge chairs and umbrellas you can use to avoid getting burned. We like watching the wake of the ship from there, and the wind is blocked so you get a nice little breeze, but don't feel like you're going to blow away. We always take canned sodas with us (can you tell we are "cheap" cruisers?), so we'd go thru Tiffany's, grab a glass full of ice for our Cokes (or an ice cream cone), and go out the back door to Serenity to watch the sunset or get a little sun. So nice...
So overall, we were pleased with the cruise. We aren't cruise experts, by any means, but from the 3 different cruise lines we've been on, I'd say this was our 3rd choice (Holland America being our favorite, Royal Caribbean our second). Just seemed like this was more of a "party" atmosphere overall, with a little lower standards of food/entertainment/clientele than the other 2 lines. But we had a great time...we relaxed, we ate, we people-watched, we laughed at some of the funny things/people on board, and we were together. It was a fun and restful time...we could sleep late, or stay up late (one night we sat up late on the upper deck behind the basketball court and watched the beautiful, full, "super-moon" shining on the water), play mini-golf, read, or just do nothing. We loved it, so don't be scared by any negative reviews you may read on this forum....also, this ship is going into dry dock for 17 days at the end of the month for a scheduled upgrade. I'm sure you will at least get some nicer features in the cabins...maybe even a new TV set! Enjoy your cruise...wherever you go!

No such thing as a bad cruise

I should start by saying the only other cruise line I have sailed in is Disney. I prepared myself before hand not to expect the Disney level of anything and I was still very disappointed. My biggest complaint was that smoking is allowed inside the ship. Smoking was allowed at a bar on deck 9 as well as the casino next to the bar. Deck 9 is a main passageway on this ship and the smoke permeates this entire floor. It doesn't matter which stairwell you enter this floor from, you will be overwhelmed with smoke when you arrive. We had an 11 year old in our party who has asthma and required a trip to the doctor when we got back for steroids due to chest congestion that developed during our cruise.
The rooms are smaller than small, if you have more than 2 people in a stateroom, good luck maneuvering around the bed.
The gym had adequate equipment and what I used was in working order. The water fountain in the gym barely had a dribble and when you have just put in a vigorous workout you really should have a better water source available.
I was amazed at how the officer level staff did not take time to interact with guests, while the stateroom stewards always addressed us in the hallway. The officers seemed more interested in talking with each other than with the passengers.
The food was just ok, nothing special, I actually lost a pound while on board. The coffee from the coffee bar was excellent, it may have been one of my favorite things on the cruise. Our dining room server was excellent and we enjoyed getting to know him.
We went to 2 shows, "rock n roll through the ages" was fabulous and "Win" was just ok, didn't care for the game show theme.
The gift shops are cheesy and having an announcer outside the shops announcing deals every hour was just too much to bear, I did not purchase anything in the gift shops.
Overall, I probably will never cruise on the Elation again and may never cruise Carnival again.

Disappointed

the good...getting on and off the boat was a breeze thanks to faster to the fun. definitely the best $50 we spent on this cruise. erin michelle band! pleasure island family excursion in cozumel. great place for the kids and the adults. well worth every penny.
the bad...nothing was really bad, just didn't stand out as excellent. but absolutely the best activity of the week was the ERIN MICHELLE BAND! if you are on this ship, go see her shows! really talented country singer that has a great cd that we bought after one of her shows. we had a blast with her 4 of the 5 nights and the bar right there where she plays makes the best drinks on the ship.
the ugly...we have two kids just under two years old. believe me, whatever they tell you when booking, it's wrong, unless they tell you those kids will be bored stiff. although we had to pay full adult price for them, we were told there were activities for them at camp carnival. but once we got there, the woman in charge said there's no way they could come in with the older kids because they aren't quite two yet according to their passports. so they could come back to night owls, which we thought they would enjoy playing with the toys, etc then. so at 10 pm, we came back. we don't keep the kids up that late usually but for vacation, we make exceptions. but they were told to go to sleep the minute we left them. one of the ladies in the area said that the boss of that section will not allow kids to stay up and play. they can lay down and watch a movie but no playing or running or jumping. although touted as a family ship, unless the kids are teens and can fend for themselves most of the day, it's definitely not a place for kids. most of the people on the ship were there to drink and party. I had been told that by others but after speaking with a carnival agent, we decided to take a chance since we've already done Disney and other lines and hadn't been on carnival yet.
overall, just not a ship I would recommend. i'm told the 2.0 ships are better but for my money, i'd go with costa or ncl and have better food, better service, and i'll leave the kids at home unless we go Disney again.

Go for the Erin Michelle Band and some of the drinks, not much else
