The ship is well maintained for its age. We were on every deck, as we love walking and noticed staff everywhere trying to maintain high standards. Excellent Staff, Delicious dining options, Fresh Fruits available in the Buffet. The assigned seating at dinner was picture perfect. We had a table at the front of the Dining Room with excellent sunset view every evening. Massage experience was divine and the health bar was a plus. The gym is huge with all the newest equipment and you can track your workout progress with an app connected to the equipment. The ship excursion were a bit disorganized and we had some minor issues. The wifi was dependable, just make sure you get the unlimited package as you wont regret it. Our room attendant was unbelievable and the room itself was awesome. Although you will have to pay for all the extras, it was not that bad. We will return Read Less

Recent cruise april 2018 from dubai to yokohama saw the reception desk overrun each day with complaints. Poor food adolescent daytime activities.poor nightime shows.bad tv.pool accident resulting in death took medical staff far too long to attend. Untrained staff. Food in nightime dining hours old. Same 3 films rerun on deck. Bad experience. Never again...stay away from australia..not reccomended..give msc a wide berth. This is an honest review and is backed up by the majority of people onboard. Arrogant staff with an air of superiority made any complaints pointless. This was a cruise of all bling and nosubstance.head of food needs to be replaced as does entertainer director. Entertainment would'nt win talent quest in outer outback towns in oz. Occupational health and safety on board shocking..this boat should not be allowed to sail in australian waters. Poor food bad entertainment.bad tv. Embarking in Dubai took about 10 minutes to get out of the taxi and onto the ship. Destination Japan and the languages announced on board has gone from 6 to 8 and now include Japanese and Chinese (not a problem for me) The ship is lovely with lots of bars and quiet areas to sit. I enjoyed the food and found it better then a Royal Caribbean cruise I did recently, I liked the main dining room as they can be so flexible, we were having up to 4 serves of some meals (chilli mussels) they were so delicious. They cooked us a special curry meal and pasta meal that was not on the menu and also delicious. There was a good variety of food in the buffet and easy to find seating most of the time. The all inclusive drinks package was $29 a day and a bargain and well used, I did not like the Pepsi light they used in the cocktails. The cabin was roomy. The wifi package was excellent value $160 for 10GB, I used about 8GB over the 29 days. and always got good reception. The nightly shows in the theatre were good but I really enjoyed listening to the different music and performers in the many different bars. I don't normally do daytime activities but did the world quiz and a wine tasting session, there were activities available most of the day. I don't like that they dont use the big screen near the pool, I did see two videos on there, Elvis and Led Zepplin which was good, but I love to sit back by the pool watching the big screen with a cocktail and cruising along, especially on sea days. I would not say this was a fantastic cruise, because of bad weather the port in Vietnam was changed at the last moment, we were unable to get off the Ship in Shanghai and we were half a day late getting into Yokohama, we were also delayed about 4 hours getting off ship in Hong Kong. Because of the change of itinerary MSC have compensated us all with 100 euro credit and 50% off next cruise. I booked 5 excursions but only did 3, all these I spent a long time on the bus :( . I purchased a spa package but was not keen on the small Jacuzzi in small room and the massage that was included I did not have time to do in the small time frame they allowed. The laundry package was good to have. I did most of the ports before and been on the ship before and the cancelled and delayed ports made 29 days a bit tedious, no fault of the company, because of this I would rate this cruise 3 out of 5,,,, but 99% of the staff gave 110%, they made a 3 star cruise 4 star. best bar staff ever... We spent a good week because the family company we had was great, but the service on the cruise is better. I have been to other shipping companies and this was the first time with MSC and I think some services are better. To start the tour service, I think they should take care of the explanations of the excursions to the clients, they do not give enough information. The dinners are very monotonous, there is no animation of any kind, for example, dinner of the captain and the captain? He does not come to dinner, you go to take a picture with him .. it should be him who comes to see his customers. Dinner in white ... And ...? if .. people wear white And ...? I do not see animation or support on the part of the waiters and so all the nights ... The animation for the day a little loose ... the daytime entertainers do not look for customers, they do not encourage them to go out and participate ... they are not animations that encourage them to participate. We took a person with a wheelchair, we received in the cabin a letter so that any help we needed to call a number and ask for a person and after three days calling and complaining at the reception, we are still waiting for us to be called and we were asked to apologize at least, because no one picked up the phone and the time we got it they answered us in English (we are Spanish) and they told us that there was nobody that could attend to us and they hung up the phone. We complained at the reception and until today ... without solution, thanks to which between us we could find solution, but not thanks to the supposedly special attention that had that person on board by the circumstance of going in wheelchair. Cruise in size, visually huge and where they take care of the boat a lot, but not the customers, appearance of luxury and seriousness that you need to make the customer feel comfortable. The cabin very nice, size and cleanliness, the life that gives the balcony is amazing. I will return and continue to cruise, but with other companies as before, with companies that take care of their customers. Read Less

This was our third cruise on MSC Splendida and our seventh MSC cruise in total, having been twice on her sister ship MSC Fantasia and also on the Lirica and Armonia. The cruise departed Southampton on 5 October, heading towards Genoa via La Coruna, Lisbon, Gibraltar and Barcelona, having set off from Hamburg two days prior. The cruise was booked via the MSC Voyagers Club Selection, which is their reward scheme. We got an incredible deal and packaged the cruise with a stay in Lake Garda and Milan before flying home. Embarkation at Southampton was quick and efficient. Our boarding time was 3pm but we were onboard by about 12:30, despite my other half having put the cruise paperwork in the main luggage and this being sent to the ship before we’d checked in! Splendida is an absolutely beautiful ship, there is no doubt about that. As we boarded the ship we were ushered in to the main atrium area, which is just absolutely stunning. There are bars on three levels, deck 5, where there is a grand piano and seating area, deck 6 where there is the mixology bar, serving all the usual drinks plus expertly crafted cocktails and deck 7 where there is the coffee bar. All of these decks are linked by two sweeping Swarovski crystal staircases, which apparently costs €5000 per step! We headed to our cabin to collect our cruise cards and found a tray of chocolate covered strawberries and a bowl of fruit in the cabin from MSC. Our balcony cabin, on deck 10 (cabin 10114) was of the usual MSC standard, with a large double bed, plenty of wardrobe and drawer space, shower room and sofa. The beds are high enough of the ground to allow you to store your suitcase underneath which is a bonus, we have been on cruises or at hotels where this hasn’t been possible. Having picked up our cruise cards we went to the buffet for a spot of lunch and were immediately greeted by a beaming smile and hello from the waiter who had looked after us at Christmas on MSC Fantasia. When you consider how many guests he must see over the year it’s quite something to be remembered. Following lunch we headed down to the piazza area on deck 6 for a glass of champagne, no surprises that the crew in there recognised us too and made a fuss of us being back. Whenever we step foot on an MSC ship, my partner and I look at each other and think ‘we’re home’. The piazza is a great area for people watching. It’s set out like a small town square with a couple of shops around the outside and iron tables and chairs on a tiled floor, with some tiled benches for extra seating. There are excellent cakes and ice creams available here (at an extra cost, depending on your drinks package) and we often skip dessert at lunch and come here for a cake and a glass of champagne for afternoon tea. Following the muster station drill it was time to change for dinner. We were on the first sitting in the La Reggia restaurant. Although we had requested a table for two we were on a table of eight, six of us English and an Australian couple, they were a great crowd therefore we didn’t look to move to a table of two, had there been one available. Every night we were nearly the last table out of the restaurant as the conversation just kept flowing between us, with plenty of laughs and discussion thrown in. Your dinner guests really can make a holiday in that respect. A lot of people seem to complain about the food on MSC. What I would say to them is don’t go with the expectation that you’re going to have steak and chips every night. MSC is an Italian cruise line, the Italians like to take their time over dinner and have up to seven courses, with an appetizer – perhaps prawn cocktail, smoked salmon or something like that, then a salad course, then soup, then pasta or risotto, an entrée, dessert and cheese. You don’t have to have every course. My advice would be to try a bit of everything though! With so much choice on the menu I do find it hard to believe that people can’t find something they like. Food is very subjective, but my favourite entrées are duck breast with sour cherry sauce or the roast prime rib of beef. Breakfast and lunch in the restaurant has altered since we first started cruising with MSC, there is now a ‘bistro’ concept in the MDR, which consists of a buffet area in addition to the a la carte options. You can order from the menu and help yourself from the buffet selections. The advantage of this is that the deck 14 buffet gets incredibly busy at peak times and it can be difficult to find a seat. In the MDR you are shown to a table and have waiter service, much more civilised. There are also items on the menu that you wouldn’t get in the buffet such as smoked salmon, eggs benedict etc. The evening entertainment was varied, and some of the theatre shows very impressive. On one night the lead singer in the show ‘Amour’ which is an opera gala was ill so this was cancelled and another show put on in it’s place. Amour was then shown in the afternoon of our final day at sea, I’m so glad we made time to go and see it; the show was really good with an amazing sound, backed by a pair of violinists and a pianist. As Splendida has so many bars and defined areas, there are so many different acts you can see. The Purple Bar was a great spot to watch Irena, a European singer who sang both English and German songs. We got to know her over the week and on our final night she actually changed her line up and sang a song from her other set that we’d told her was our favourite! The Inoteca wine bar has another grand piano, the pianist in there played a mix of songs from musicals, classical and old favourites. This is a great spot to sit and they have some wonderful wines available and will bring you some tapas to go with your wine. The service in here was excellent, with the two waiters Ivan and Ivan working well together and always with a smile on their faces. The Aft Lounge is a bit of a party venue, with a dance floor and a proper band playing the usual party type music, and the animation team having fun and encouraging people to party. In terms of the ports visited, they were all very nice with plenty to see and do. La Coruna is a very pretty town, however it turns out we visited on a local holiday day and a lot of the town was shut, with the exception of churches, museums etc. We didn’t go to the Hercules tower, although we sailed out past it and got a few good photographs from the top deck. Sailing in to Lisbon was a wonderful experience, going underneath the bridge – I was on the top deck and wondered whether we would make it underneath, there can’t have been much more than ten feet between the very top of the ship and the bottom of the bridge, or at least it seemed that way! I was sad to leave the ship as we had such a wonderful time, with no problems whatsoever. We did encounter a few English people who had decided it wasn't for them as they were used to Cruise and Maritime - MSC is a world away from CMV's offering, so I can understand why they didn't enjoy it. This was booked as a short break that fit in with a visit to Hamburg followed by a 3 night mini cruise back to the UK. My expectation levels were not high an, mainly due to that, I was not disappointed. For such a large ship it did feel somewhat claustrophobic - not helped by ceiling heights that seemed somewhat lower than on most other cruise ships I have been on.the lack of dining choices and relaxation areas was another downer. I got the feeling that they had used a high proportion of space for accommodation to cram as many fare paying guests on as possible. Staff were pleasant but many seemed quite new to the job and not extensively trained. Food was adequate except for the only speciality restaurant offering a selection of Mexican foods and supposedly prime steaks.a total waste of time and money. These negatives aside one has to rate this alongside the amount paid which was not a lot. A classic case of you get what you pay for! Read Less

I have just read reviews of Splendida in November 2015 - very similar reviews. I do agree, however, that the embarkation in Barcelona left a lot to be desired. It was not organised at all and, unfortunately, no one person appeared to be in control and knew what was happening. I understand there was a problem with check-in computers and shortage of staff - no excuse MSC MUST get this sorted out. However, our embark time was stated as 3 pm and we were in our cabin at 2.30 pm and the luggage arrived at approx 4pm. Re disembarkation in Rio - everyone was off the ship according to their allotted time - if not before. It is not MSC's fault that Rio are holding the Games this year and have decided to build a railway where the dual-carriageway was once sited. It was hot (Rio does tend to be hot in December!) there were more than enough Porters to assist with baggage handling and the baggage-hall was well organised. Unfortunately, it was chaotic with 2 ships but this is the Port Authorities responsibility and not MSC's fault. We were at our hotel on Copacabana beach at 10.20 am which I think was pretty good! Lack of hygiene - what! The ship was spotless everywhere! Colds - you cannot blame MSC! Babies in nappies - I only saw about 5 children (2 babies) out of 3,500 passengers and I certainly did not see any sitting on tables in 'diapers' in the self service restaurant. Staff rude and arrogant, argumentative - we found them all to be extremely helpful, pleasant, courteous, efficient - as good as any other 4* cruise line. Service - our cabin steward and waiters in the MDR were excellent - nothing was too much trouble - they even arranged a curry meal for us! Bar staff were, again, excellent, efficient, friendly with, perhaps, one exception! Buffet (Bora Bora) did get busy, particularly when we had picked up an additional 600 pax in Salvador. However, we NEVER had a problem finding a table at breakfast or lunch (we headed for the aft and it was never 'crowded or chaotic') and the bar service was not a problem - ever! 1 o'clock for lunch could be busy, however, and occasionally there was a wait of, oh, at least 2/3 minutes when trays of food were replenished. Hot piazza's were flowing all the time however. They certainly did not run out of food! The one side of the buffet did close about 2.45 pm to get ready for tea but certainly not before. Plastic cups and plates - have you been on P&O or Cunard lately? Aggressimo drinks package expensive - GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY! I don't know where you normally drink and what price you pay at home but you cannot say this is expensive. Perhaps you only have 1 or 2 drinks a day in which case don't buy the drinks package. I'm afraid MSC didn't make a profit out of us! Entertainment team worked tirelessly and very hard - not always to everyone's taste but if you don't like, don't go to that event. The entertainment in the bars was excellent, particularly, the 2 Brazilian female singers in the Atrium - brilliant! Did get a bit loud around the pool, but this is typical Italian entertainment - so move to the other quiet pool or another deck. King Neptune's party was brilliant - think that might have put a bit of smile on your face maybe? Theatre shows were not 'London shows' but were still varied and suited most tastes. The dancers were excellent - the one male singer not so good! Flamengo, Paris, Tribute, Italian Shows and the Opera singers were all very enjoyable as was the White Deck Party. By the way, you weren't dragged to the Aft Lounge or Disco if you didn't want to go! Shop stalls - yes outside the shopping arcade - again if you don't want to shop don't go there. As for the dangerous ports - you are visiting Brazil this is a 3rd World country which has many well publicised problems - murders, drugs cartels, theft, muggings - have you read about the Favelas in Brazil - did you do any research before you booked? I don't think so. Have you read about the problems in Europe lately - Paris, Athens, Barcelona, London and anywhere else for that matter. We had a fantastic cruise and this is our third from Europe to South America with MSC and would certainly go again. If you are going on a Mediterranean cruise line you are, strangely enough, going to get 'foreign' food, different culture and sense of humour and entertainment and they are going to talk in a funny language. However, all the crew speak English as their second (if not first language) and English is second on all announcements. The Theatre (or emergencies) are the only occasions when 5 languages are used for announcements. Read Less

After you have cruised many times with different cruise lines, I think you start asking yourself why you choose a particular cruise line instead of the others. In our case a very important role is the itinerary and the price-value relationship. Nowadays many cruise lines travel the itinerary that we want to travel to very reasonable prices. We do choose however MSC cruises over other cruise lines for the transatlantic crossings because of some reasons: 1) we like those long journeys from Europe to South America and vice versa on well appointed and modern ships like the MSC Splendida, 2) we enjoy the Italian way of cruising with Italian music and Italian food, 3) we like very much the activities on board, specially Tai Chi with well qualified instructors, which makes a crossing very pleasant and contributes to our well being, 4) we enjoy the shows and the entertainment and 5) we look forward for the changing regional food offerings. Our crossing with the MSC Splendida from Genoa to Santos met those criteria. We have enjoyed the crossing. Our cabin 11132 was a good midship cabin. We have appreciated the effort of the cabin attendant, of the waiters, of the crew members and of the officers. We have not missed one Tai Chi lesson. We have enjoyed the Brazilian singers at the main lobby every evening and we have loved the elegance of the ship. We do find however, that there is room for improvement in some areas. For example the dancing music was according to our opinion, way to slow and repetitive. There was a duo in one small venue, which was also kind of a walking path, which alternated the music with a solo singer every evening. This place was actually the only place to dance before 22.00 pm and unfortunately, during the whole transatlantic, every evening the music was the same, slow and boring. What a pity... We felt like zombies moving at the rhythm of a music played without much enthusiasm as if the players would have been instructed to play music to listen but not to dance. Unfortunately in the after lounge the band there, according to our opinion, did not really manage to motivate public to dance. There were dance lessons at 20.30 pm more or less. What an odd time for dance lessons...at that time people should be able to dance, not to wait for some dance lessons to end. Once the dance lessons finished, and the band took over, again many people left, because the music was not very conducive. Now we are talking about a public in which the majority were Brazilians, who dance well and happily. Where were they? Listening to very good Brazilian music at the lobby. The two duos were excelent. Why were the two duos always in the lobby and did not change place to another venue, in which people could dance? I am sure the lovely bosa nova, which they were playing would have brought many people, including us, to the dance floor. Another thing that we have missed was the classic music at the lobby. This is also from our perspective another value added from MSC Cruises in their journeys (we consider Tai Chi another main value added). No one used that grand piano at the lobby, although there were a pianist and a violin player, which could have provided for good entertainment. Another area of improvement lies on the wines offered as part of the inclusive package. Without being exceptionally good, they are Ok for no more than one week, but if you are doing a crossing of at least 18 nights, it is extremely boring to always be offered the same wine. Is it really so difficult to offer other wines for a similar price as part of the inclusive package? Other cruise lines change the wines after a couple of days, so I guess it might be possible. Another small issue, is that in our previous cruises with the Splendida, we remember hearing the lovely Italian song "Com te partiro" when the ship was leaving a port. This was nice and became something to look forward to it. Other cruise lines, play other songs, for example Crystal Cruises always plays "What a wonderful world". Unfortunately on the crossing in November with the Splendida, there was no song played in every port. I think only once was played "Com te partiro" in Brazilian waters. It is a pity because hearing to a particular song, makes leaving the port so much nicer and every time that song plays outside a cruise ship, we evoke the sailings... Despite the points listed as having room for improvement, we have enjoyed our crossing. We wish to thank those hard working crew members, members of the entertainment team and officers, who always make a cruise, a special one for us. Read Less
