this cruise looked great from the adverts, not impressed at all. Dining in self service was atrocious, food everywhere people clammering for attention staff so so Restaurants at lunch and breakfast also so so. Dining evening very good service impeccable. Embarkation was quite good although quite rushed. disembarkation similar. Cabin superb as was cabin staff Ship was luxurious but unless you had all inclusive prices horrendous. First time we have been on a cruise that you had to pay for tea and coffee, we were excluded from paying but still other passengers were charged. Entertainment so so, port and shore excursions far too expensive and rushed from the time of disembarkation to getting coaches. Would not choose this ship again as far too big and impersonal, in fact have been put off cruising so not a good experience. Staff overall were excellent in bars etc and were very smart and corteous Read Less

An honest review I wills start with the PROS I) Service in the bar and restaurants excellent. 2) The guy attending to our rooms was excellent 3) Service in the breakfast and dinner restaurants excellent 4) All transactions on board very smooth. 5) Drinks of good quality 6) food in restaurant ok breakfast really good dinner ok not a great deal of choice buffet food not much different to average all inclusive. CONS 1) BE WARNED you will be kicked off the ship on your last day at 9am and bussed off to your airport, it happened to our party and our flight wasnt until 19.45 THEY REALLY DO NOT CARE. 2) Queed to get on board in Malta for over an hour made worse by groups of people stating that they where a party and nust board together (as many as 20 at a time and no children) when our group objected we had the comment " your only English" when we finally boarded the ship I was fuming and to see 4 staff members laughing and joking with their hands in their pockets I was even more annoyed. One man putting EVERY single item on a scanner another 2 members of staff confiscating the bottles they where taking on board. 3) Waited hours to board and you couldnt buy any food they did however supply juice after a long journey it was poor. 4) Paid nearly 20 Euros each for a trip to Marseilles and a short walk away we noticed a FREE shuttle bus service THAT IS A DISGUSTING WAY TO TREAT YOUR CUSTOMERS. I am a 46 year old from Indiana. I traveled with my family which consisted of my wife, my 2 10 year old boys, my 70 year old mother and her 68 year old sister. We have all cruised before on Princess, NCL, Celebrity, Disney, and MSC. This cruise was in March and we had just cruised on the MSC Divina las October. I have no cruise status, but the family does travel alot. Embarkation was in Genoa. We learned last fall on the Divina that you dont need connecting rooms if you get balcony rooms next to each other. When you do this you can open up the divider on the balcony between the two rooms and use that to go back and forth between the rooms. The only downside to this was that one night it was pretty stormy outside and the divider banged made noise until I found a way to secure it. Embarkation was fst and friendly. My mother has a cane and once the MSC staff saw this they sped us all through the process and we did not have to wait at all. One nice feature about the ship picking up passengers at about every stop is that our room was ready for us as soon as we got onto the shop at noon. We knew pretty much what to expect with the ship prior to arrival because it is essentially the same as the Divina. I do have to say that the Divina seemed a little nicer than the Splendida. There were a couple more upcharge restaurants on the Divina, although we didnt eat at any of them on either ship. Coming from the USA where there is a mexican restaurant on every corner and a steakhouse on every other corner it was hard for me to justify paying more to eat mexican on the ship. We always get a balcony at the rear of the ship on the floor nearest the buffet. This allows us to grab food and return to our balcony if we cant find a table in the buffet. This was a problem on the Divina, but we never had a problem finding a table at the buffet on the Splendida. This also allows you to be a quick walk to the pool or hot tub without having to walk down a long hallway. The food at the Main Dining Room was so so. I definitely would not go on MSC for the food, but I definitely would not skip the MSC because of the food. It is no Celbrity, but it wasnt much worse than DIsney. My youngest got steak every night and the rest of us tried pretty much everything. The wait staff was friendly but not speedy. You have to expect long dinners in the Main Dining Room though. We only ate in here 4 nights. The evening buffet was smaller than the lunch buffet which was a real bummer. There were not as many choices for dinner than for lunch. There were always good pizza, hamburgers, and a good pasta. They had calamari everynight. I usually like calamari, but this was the fisshiest tasting, rubbery stuff I have ever had. The big disipoinment was not free lobster on the boat. Overall though I liked the food. It was in the 60's most days and people were not at the pools. I had the drink package and found that the pool bar was the place to be. Very friendly bar staff and no crowd. The ports were nice except for Marseille. Marseiile was the dirtiest place I have been. I have been to Beijing, Central America, and Chicago and found Marseille to be a huge waste of time. Not worth the bus ride. Palermo was the best, then Malta, then Rome, then Barcelona. I would do this cruise again in a heartbeat. Read Less

We chose this cruise as there wasn't a lot of choice for the time of year. We have visited most of the ports before, so the main purpose of this trip was to chill out. We are seasoned cruisers and have used most of the main cruse lines, including 2 previously with MSC and have had all sorts of experiences with them from dreadful to pleasantly surprising, so we didn't have any great expectations. The embarkation at Barcelona was much improved from previous cruises, it was quick and slick and the new method of authorising credit cards once onboard was easy and efficient. Our aft facing cabin was very nicely appointed with a large balcony, sufficient storage but the usual small bathroom. The ship is typically Italian glitz, and the public areas are very attractive on the whole. The buffet, as usual was terrible - lukewarm food, limited seating and disinterested staff, but we only used it on two occasions, preferring to have breakfast, lunch and dinner in the main dining room. Service at breakfast and dinner was a little hit and miss, with on three occasions the wrong meal arriving! Dinner service was much better, but the set times are not ideal 6.30 or 9pm. Food in the MDR was on the whole quite good. I do take issue with MSC's very lax hand hygiene standards, although there were machines located at the entrance to every eating place, only about 1% of customers used them, and no member of staff was making sure that people did. This is vastly different to RCI and NCL where staff are located at the entrance to restaurants and insist that the hands are sanitised. Similarly in the washrooms, although they recommend using a paper towel on door handles, the towel machines are situated far from the doors with no bin hands to deposit said paper towel in!! Also, for the first time in over 20 cruises, we were not asked to fill in a medical declaration on embarkation. The shows were typical cruise cheese and although the ship has a beautiful theatre, the entertainment was dire. Also the cruise director ( who we have seen on a previous MSC cruise) was diabolical! The pianist and violinists in the main atrium were very good though. The ports were interesting and disembarkation for these was pretty easy. The staff were not over friendly with the notable exception of the lovely Ukrainian lad in the wine bar - where they have introduced complimentary tapas. The drinks package is a must and very good value and included nice coffees and ice cream from the lovely gelateria on the sun deck. Bar staff ( apart from aforementioned) were on the whole not very friendly or efficient. On one occasion we asked for a gin and tonic, and was served a vodka and coke and when we pointed out the mistake were asked " well can't you just have the vodka". However, the biggest problem we encountered on this trip was the fact that there were vast numbers of very large groups of people who displayed some very bad manners. These groups, were shouting to each other from various balconies above, below and alongside us, were pushing into queues, cramming into the lifts en masse before anybody could exit. In addition there were quite a few groups of young teenagers seemingly on school trips from Spain and Italy. They seemed to spend most of their time running along the corridors, shouting and banging on doors and elbowing people out of the way. If you don't mind this sort of behaviour, you will probably enjoy yourself, but we found it unappealing. So, a mixed bag: a nice ship, decent food in MDR, excellent drinks package, and comfortable accommodation. Wouldn't be our first choice again but decent value for money. Read Less

Many MSC fans will take issue with my review, but I write it to help cruisers who have traveled with other lines - for you, I believe you will rate your experience on this MSC ship as only average. But let me say some good things first- have seen claim that food in dining room was not hot- in our case, not true. The other claim- staff not friendly, also not on our cruise. So let's discuss food - only of food on the formal dining- we felt quality of food was low so chefs forced to work with what they have -very little beef on the menus -I'm gluten intolerant, so could not eat the pasta, but my wife likes risotto, so both of us had the risotto for the pasta course, and we had it seven nights, and believe there was very little diff, even though each night a diff risotto was offered. On the gluten issue though there was a gluten sampling in one of the lounges, no gluten dishes were offered in dining room, and of course No gluten bread: on the issue of bread, no breadbasket on the table- you get offered bread once! Felt it was tacky one night when a flyer was given out at dinner asking if we wished to order lobstet(at a price) for tomorrow - it just emphasized the fact that you should not plan to see lobster on your plate had they not tried to make the sale, no one would have thought about it. Another fiasco was the lobstet bisque - great tomato soup, not even a flake of anything that looked like any kind so shell fish. Quality of soup, both as to content and preparation. Liked wine list, enjoyed a bottle Cava every night, final night French champagne! There are 2 policies regarding service that made me rate poor service though staff not at fault: first you cannot order a cocktail in the buffet area, wine or beer yes- for cocktails you have to go to a bar. The other issue is cabin stewards - it seems they do not want any kind of interaction between cruisers and cabin stew-I didn't talk to,our steward until the evening of our 2nd night, and to do that I had to go find him -the noon of leaving port our first day, I called the desk to ask if the steward could to our room- was told he would not be available until 6pm-I called room service to ask for ice, had some guests in our cabin, they said it be sent right away, an hour later, ice had not arrived, so we had yo leave for dinner. We thought the entertainment again was no better than average- though the afternoon performance of the Opera Carmen was ambitious and well done, with two excellent singers. There was a trio, 2 violins and piano that played classical a semi class music.Fellow cruisers will blanch at how I handle tipping on this and other cruises - on the first day, I tell the pursers office not to charge gratuities to my account : I share with the waiter and cabin attendant the full suggested tip amount, but in this case, 60% to waiter, 40'to cabin att. To end on a positive note, getting on and off the ship was the best by far I have seen in 40' years of cruising. Also, keep in mind I write this as a cruiser from North America: MSC is and has been a very successful European line and caters to that clientele. To repeat I did wanted to be of help to cruisers who need to know MSC is not Royal C, Holl.Am, Celeb, Costa or Carnivale. Regards, cruisere Read Less

Selected this cruise as a late break when very little choices were available at the time. Initially we were very impressed with the speed of embarkation at Barcelona, but this was quickly dispelled by having to wait around for some time for access to our cabin due to cleaning/preparation work to be carried out. The ships appearance was good and seemed clean, modern and well organised, our first trip to the buffet style restaurant confirmed that the cuisine was geared to a Mediterranean diet, and our first pizza was consumed. Virtually all main dishes in the evening meals used white meat (veal/chicken/fish) and in general was cooked ok. Our main concern was that in the buffet restaurant, the cutlery was dirty on several occasions which may have accounted, along with the change of diet, to my having to take imodium on three occasions. Our balcony cabin was very impressive and roomy, the toilet/shower was more than adequate but the lack of a kettle was a let down and our quilt cover had a rip in it which was still there at the end of the cruise. A quick flip through the TV channels showed that the only thing for the English speakers was Sky news which rapidly proved to be the most boring channel ever and unfortunately the TV did not accommodate a usb memory stick. We noticed that the ships passengers comprised of large amounts of children who seemed to enjoy running down the corridors and jumping off beds in cabins above making sleep virtually impossible, inconsiderate adult passengers also contributed to the mayhem by regularly coming back to their cabins at around three in the morning, shouting to each other, I couldnt understand what they were saying as it was in an oriental language! Other couples I spoke to also had the same problem and one had registered a complain about it! Needless to say, I did not get much sleep at all on my vacation! The evening shows were of a very good standard and we enjoyed a show every evening. The crew were very friendly and attentive, and would attempt to fulfill any requests you gave them. All in all, it was with mixed feelings that we disembarked with the fixed impression that this was the worst cruise we have been on (mainly due to the antics of some passengers) and that we will not be sailing with this line in the future. Pre-trip - we had to ask for the itinerary about a week before we left and then received it in Spanish. When I asked for an English copy I was told there wasn't one yet a German lady on the coach had an English copy. The coach journey (from hell) - 10 hours cooped up listening to non-stop female German speakers; then 10 hours on the return - we should have been warned! Barcelona hotel and stay - good. Embarkation and disembarkation - well organised. Dining - abominable. In the dining room ALL hot food was cold, tasteless and unappetising. Self-service - a rat-race, cold, unappetising. Meat was cremated, served badly and inedible; limited range of fruit and salads, breakfast very hit and miss in terms of what you got. Entertainment - not worth watching. Good casino. The ship - the furniture in bar areas was dirty, the service variable. All-inclusive - what a joke! By far the majority of cocktails, cakes and ice creams were excluded and had to be paid for so it was a waste of money. The water in the room and mini-bar were not included. Service charge - MSC had the cheek to take 9 euros/each/day from our account without authorisation plus 15% service charge on drinks. We were offered a 'special' drink at dinner without being told we would have to pay for it. Staff with a few exceptions were not friendly, some were sullen others openly crying about their working conditions and attitude of other staff towards them. We waited 3 days to have the safe in the cabin opened after speaking to reception staff on five occasions. In summary, the noise, dirty conditions, screaming children, poor food and contracting bad cases of flu on board contributed to our decision never to cruise again, especially not with MSC. Read Less

First of all, my expectations were somewhat lower than for other cruises on Princess & NCL. I had read numerous reviews about MSC's notoriously bad service and was prepared to experience what these other passengers went through. Fortunately for us, we never experienced even the hint of a bad attitude by any employee while on the ship. The only minor incident requiring improvement was at check-in, where it seemed to take forever to check-in. The problem was that MSC had only 2 agents to process what seemed like hundreds of people waiting for their numbers to be called. After getting tired of sitting, I took my camera and when over near the end of the counter to take pictures of the very long line of people against the contrast of 2 working agents. An MSC agent asked what I was doing, and I told him that I was recording the fact that they only had 2 agents to process the very long line of people. I added that I am a Senior Contributor for TripAdvisor and was recording the situation for a future lengthy review of our cruise. Within minutes, they added at least 4 other agents to help process the long lines, and as a result we were able to board the ship much quicker. Other than that, the rest of our cruise went pretty smoothly, the balcony cabin was clean and roomy, the cabin attendant was exceedingly pleasant and was very service oriented. Our cabin attendant was from Indonesia, as were many other service staff that we saw throughout the ship. Many of our other cruises were similarly staffed by Southeast Asians, who are friendly, good natured and accustomed to providing excellent service. As to the ship, it is absolutely gorgeous, one of MSC's largest class of modern ships. I could not find anything to criticize during our 7 day cruise. As to the dining arrangements, we were assigned to La Reggia dining room. Our table seemed no larger than a card table, for seating of 4 guests. However, it was against a divider wall, so a good portion of the table was unusable and we were cramed a bit too close together. We were also disappointed to learn that no coffee is served with dessert or dnner. The waiter explaining that it tends to prolong the time that guests linger at their table after dinner, causing a timing issue for the next seating of guests. Somehow, both NCL and Princess manage to serve coffee with dessert and still manage to get their 2nd seating guests served on time. Needless to say, we only dined at that table for one night. We found that the same food and desserts were being served in the Bora Bora & Pago Pago buffet restaurants. We dined buffet style for the rest of the cruise, and we had coffee with our dessert! One of the other differences we noticed from NCL & Princess cruises is that the hand sanitizers were available; but, were placed in the entrances areas where they were not monitored by MSC staff. As a result, most people just walked past them without stopping to apply hand sanitizer. It seemed like the excercize to sanitize your hands was optional. On NCL & Princess, the hand santizer stations are placed just before entering the food areas and they provided staff to assure that they were strictly used. Not on MSC. Overall, based on the price we paid, the condition of the ship, the nice cabin and cabin attendant that served us well, our cruise was very good. We would definitely cruise with MSC again, except that we would opt-out of the dining room experience. Read Less

We had sailed with M.S.C. before and really enjoyed the experience. We went in July, having gone in June the pervious year, and we found a lot more children on board. We stayed in Barcelona for 2 nights before the cruise, and 2 nights after the cruise. It is one of our favorite cities and we love exploring it, M.S.C. embarkation must be one of the smoothest in any cruise line, luggage is taken from you as soon as you arrive, you are on board before you know it. Our cabin was not ready for an hour, so we were directed to the welcome buffet where a delicious was waiting. Our balcony cabin was waiting in one hour, met our steward, we even had a pillow menu! There was four in our party and we had a table for four at dinner. the menu changes every night and if you decide that you do not like your choice, there is no problem in getting you a replacement from the menu. In the evenings there is a range of entertainment, although with the ship being full. there was a problem with seating in some of the reception areas, but usually once the second seating dinner went, we had ample room. We enjoy going on tours but were disappointed in La Spezia when the wine tasting tour was cancelled, we only knew the night before, but the shuttle bus took you from the ship for free. I think the tours are good value and very informative. Already looking forward to next year, but think we will try a smaller M.S.C ship and we will be going in June. Read Less

We are back now in the UK after our cruise on MSC Magnifica, out from Venice, 7 nights on board from 1st Nov calling at ports in Italy, Greece, Turkey, Croatia and back to Venice. Just enough ports of call for one week, we were lucky, every day the sun shone. We did our own thing, using taxis busses to look around. We booked this cruise on the last minute, getting a great deal from MSC we paid for an up grade to a Balcony Suite, adding a drinks package, "we saved about %30, " but we like a drink". Food on the ship was great, varied, tasty and well served, with exception of the first night, which was awful, cold food, bad service, complained to customer service who sorted it immedietly, " next night, new table, new waiters, great." This is the second time we have cruised with MSC, we have cruised with other Cruise lines, MSC stand up very well, so much so that we have booked a third cruise, Venice to Durban, South Africa for October 2016. I have only one complaint with MSC, they need to be more flexible with their flights, main airports are not always the best for customers, Would I recommend MSC. YES Read Less
