It was always my wife and myself's wish to go on a boat cruise but unfortunately there was always something that prevented us from going. We just decided that come what may we will do it this year. Then there was the thought of whether to take the kids as my youngest is special needs. We took the kids and I don't think I made a mistake as the activities cater for everyone's needs and was enjoyed by all. The friends we made, young and old, the experience as a whole cannot be easily erased. Only problem now is the oldest wants to know when is the next trip as she will often say " this is just like when we were on the boat" or "this looks just like Madagascar" then I will just answer her "Soon" Read Less

This was my first cruise as I am prone to sea-sickness and have avoided traveling on Cruise liners. As this was my wife's 50th celebration, I arranged the surprise to provide her with an unforgettable experience. From the start of not knowing where she was going to arriving at the port was an incredible and exciting journey. From this point on-wards, I felt the experience slipping as the cruise began to take shape. Had I known that we could embark early in the morning, I would have changed the journey to arrive in the morning and not the afternoon, and to experience more of the cruise before we left the port. Our first experience was the Lunch buffet at 15h00 where all the food was almost finished and a few leftovers to choose from. The Pizza and hamburger stalls provided no added benefit and was dry or stale, and cold. This did not change throughout the cruise. The evening entertainment provided some relief as well as our first formal dinner. The company was good however short-lived as my wife felt a little sea-sick. The food quality in general throughout the cruise was plentiful however lacked somewhat in taste and enjoyment. You often get the impression that everything is rushed to accommodate the volume of visitors. Our breakfast experiences was probably the worst as the staff was not friendly or obliging and appeared annoyed when requesting service or assistance. The cabin was excellent and entertainment rewarding, yet very crowdy and uncomfortably compact. I believe the journey could be much more rewarding by providing some alternative Dining options whereby we as holiday makers can enjoy the experience without the need to rush in/out and without feeling like dining in a company canteen. I wanted to ensure my wife's 50th birthday celebration was an unforgetable experience, but alas , turned out to be a very busy and rushed holiday, and not particularly enjoyed due to dining experiences. This was our 3rd Cruise and the 2'nd on the MSC Opera. At embarkation in Durban we were greeted with such friendly, cheerful and helpfull staff, we really felt at home and could not wait to go to our cabin. This time around we wanted a cabin with a few and really enjoyed the view. We are Bingo players and to start of our holiday my husband won the bingo on the first day. We enjoyed sitting in the lounges in the evenings with a cocktail and listening to the entertainment. The shows in the theater was suburb and we did not want to miss any of it. The Cruise Director Steve is such an excellent MC and he made the boring "information you should know" so interesting and full of laughs. We ate to much and did not have any bad dining experiences. My son really enjoyed the pizza that was available throughout day and night. We rarely caught a glimpse of him as he made friends while still embarking and with all the entertainment available enjoyed every second. He met up with the teenager group entertainment which he enjoyed especially the disco. The shore excursion was an incredible experience with being taken on the ocean with the rubber duck to just swimming in the clear waters. We just did not enjoy standing in a very long queue to wait for the lovely braaivleis and then not having anywhere to sit and enjoy our lunch. We already booked our next cruise in January this year and are very excited to see the revamped MSC Symphonia in December this year. Read Less

I booked my first cruise to Portuguese islands for 4 nights on 10th Nov from Durban. The embarkation and disembarkation were quick and efficient everything in between was a complete disaster. 3 mornings we called reception for wheel chair to be delivered in front of our room, which was confirmed to us, but wheel chair has never arrived. Reception staff was not very professional, no smile, providing confusing information, keeping my passport for 24 hours with them. Staff is speaking their native language in front of guests, which does not leave a good impression, English language shall be spoken all the time when facing guest /fortunately i speak Italian so i was fully in picture so I knew what was happening/. I was as well informed by the same staff that Reception cannot fulfil all requests and complains as they have huge number of guests. Is this called hospitality? 3 times a day I had to go downstairs as my room key was not working / I did not keep my key close to credit card or coins/, staff never apologized for inconvenience. Upon check in we did not know where to find our rooms, which floor, direction; we were looking for our rooms for 1hour, till we found them themselves. No staff on floors to assist us with directions. Our rooms supposed to be next to each other; however they were very far away from each other, each on other side of boat. I had a chance to deal to receptionist, lady from Romania, who was just great and whenever I had any issue, I rather waited in queue to talk to her. I have to highlight great service at dining room Approdo for all 4 days, our waiter from Malaysia was amazing, always with smile, changed our ala cart menu choice according our request, greeted us immediately when his eyes caught us coming, as well Antonio did a great job. As well very pleasant staff in smoking bar on the same floor as reception, I can not remember her name, but there was a great female bar tender from SA. Housekeeping was all the time available on floors; rooms were cleaned properly, however not speaking English, Be careful when leaving your room, couple of times I found my door opened, ones, when I was inside, another guest opened with his key my room. Whenever I was leaving room, I made sure to close door. After couple of seconds, door got opened itself. Entertainment - we did attend Opera for 2nd evening in Teatro, I was feeling ashamed and offended to see such a poor performance, in the middle of show I gave up and left the show. I would not suggest to book this tour for elder guests as it is impossible to get on island due to poor transportation arrangement from boat. Boat trip as itself was a great experience, but service needs to be improved.   Read Less

MSC Opera - Captain, ship and staff - take a bow! Wow, I have just disembarked from the Opera in Durban (trip from Cape Town) Wow MSC have certainly upped the ante. I cannot rave enough about the ship, the staff, the food, the facilities, the improved boarding and disembarking procedures. I have been on just about every MSC ship that has been in Durban over many years and sailed on a ship from a rival company in the Mediterranean extensively . BEST of all, I was blown away AGAIN by Casey, Anita and her team at Buffalo Bills Kids Entertainment Centre. One of my main reasons for sailing is the child care facilities (I have a difficult hyperactive ADHD child) and this time it was tops again and MORE! My 8 year old son kept counting the hours until he could go back to kids club and was so very excited to see Anita and Casey again. Their patience, understanding, and enthusiasm in keeping the kids entertained is top class - confidently I could go ashore knowing my child was in the very best care. It is for this reason I have booked to sail on the Opera in the Mediterranean next year and I have booked my 81 year old mother on a cruise to Portuguese Islands in March. Thank you MSC. Read Less

It was both my friend and i wedding DATE 10 APRIL. I paid for the hole trip for both familys five people. No communication,i want to visit inhabane as planned as it was both familys wedding date. We are friends for 30 years. We stopped at Mapoto harbour, what a waiste, you are not safe of the boat. My Video camera was nearly ripped of me by a native, but with force i did get it back. There are two many native beggars it is not safe. The photos sales need a system,we could not find our photos what we want to buy to much photos and to long waiting quie. a Simple cabin nr will do the tric when the camera man take the photos. Both familys still waiting for member ship after filling in all the forms?? Get one Afrikaans speaking person to assist with langue as 20% of the people for Durban harbour speaks Afrikaans. It will help a lot with any route changes,we could not understand the English excent. This rating to improve jourself is a good idea just answer your Emails what we have send. The MSC OPERA CRIUSE AND PERSONEL IS EXCELLENT,the food and entertainment excellent MY table141 service was excellent The evenings shows was the best Bingo was something new for me,and i enjoy it.(a lady won R60,000) The barbeque and Rum on the iland was a experience and fun. Swimming on the beach and to be the last couple to get back to the MSC boat, what a day! The most fun was at the star board side of the boat with my very stong torch light at night, the dolfins was jumping out of the water and chasing the light, free show for about 80people ,every time i want to leave they begged me to stay a little bit longer. The disembarkation was very professional done Well we are planning as a group pensioners now to do another boat trip We are planning for our next boat trip with more people groups Read Less

The Fagan 4 of South Africa had a blast on board the MSC Opera from 29 November to 2 December 2013. It was so awesome that we're planning our next one. I was very apprehensive due to us never been on a shi that size in the open water. We started queing at Durban Harbour at about 9.30am and got on board at about 11.30am and thats when it started - the Feeding Frenzy. Fresh pizza, coffee, tea and iced water. This continued all weekend! We got to our cabin, on the Norma floor, room number 9062. Small with a double bed and two bunk beds coming off the wall. Ample cupboard space, tv wih various channels and a shower and toilet. It was all we needed for the 4 of us. We got into our swimming costumes and hit the deck! The pool was felt as if we were swimming in a buckets of ice water! But this water was pumped from the sea (without the fish and seaweed). As a mom it was great cos the seawater got rid of my chidlren's sinus problems! Just before we left the port, we had the emergency drill. It was quick and efficient. Make sure you don't miss it otherwise you'll have to do it the following day after being repimanded by some crew members. As we were heading out of Durban Harbour, a helicopter pilot flew next to us waiting to fetch the harbour pilot. This was so interesting to see. We hit the pool again and had a few cocktails, yummy! Those in SA who have been on the boat said that the bar prices are quite pricy. But we didn't find it that true. A cocktail cost the equivilant of R48 each and a tin of Coke was R19. Souveniors on the other hand, were pricy. A fridge magent cost R58. We had dinner in a restaurant the first night and we found it strange as it's an upmarket restaurant and with 2 active boys, we were scared that glass on the table would go flying. thankfully, all was safe! We hit the buffet dessert table afterwards. It was very tasty. The main buffet also look tasty. We stayed up late that ight exploring the ship befre the fresh air knocked us out! We awoke the following morning to a gorgeous day and the day where we head to Portuguese ISland. After a huge breakfast,, we board the Zodiacs and head 4km towards the beach. It was the perfect day. Not a breath of wind. Fully equipped beach bar, food on demand and loads of curios. Remember to take SA Rand as the locals like the currency. We spent the whole day snorkelling, eating, suntanning, eating, drinking, swimming..... It was magical. Late afternoon, we got back on the ship, hit the deck, ate some more, had a few more cocktails. Heaven! Some things yo must remember: make sure you take motion sickness tablets with and have hem often. Start the night before you leave and again an hour before the ship leaves the port. THe shower: the bottoms lever controls the temperature and he top turns it on and off (trut me, you won't want to forget this). DO NOT take bath and swimming towels. These are provided. Shampoo and soap is also on tap in the bathrooms.   Read Less
