Choose this cruise as dates fitted with school holidays.we're do I start! embarkation was very disorganised and took over an hour.when we arrived at our cabin there was a letter saying the itinary had been changed due to unscheduled maintenance activity which would slightly reduce our speed when I went to reception was told all agents had been informed I phoned my agent and spoke to other passengers and they hadn't been informed. As a result of the change we were docking two hours later which meant we were going to miss out flight.Reception staff kept telling us they would find a solution and to go back in a couple of days .I'm the meantime we carried on with our cruise, bar staff on the pool deck are very rude also in the buffet .food was terrible wasn't very hot and very repetitive we never used the main dining room so can't comment.back to reception for our solution to get home well basically it was our own fault as we'd only given ourselves two hours fifty five minutes for our flight so they gave us a list of flights we could get at our own expense if they'd told us this was their solution to begin with we could have got direct flights home instead we had to fly to Manchester and hire a car to drive to edinburgh to retrieve our car from edinburgh airport we arrived home ten hours later than we were supposed to.reception staff were very rude it was like they had a script to read of .Seemingly the ship had been in dry dock in June and in my opinion should have stayed there a member of staff told us this late docking and shorter stats in port has been going on for weeks.I had sailed on msc twice before this so thought it would be ok but will never sail msc ever again. Me and my friends decided to take a Mediterranean cruise, we’ve taken a few Caribbean’s ones, and this cruise was terrible only good thing was the itinerary. I was in a different room and right when I walked in it smelled like fumes, went to my friends room. The floor was filthy, so we went straight to guest services, they did not care at all, throughout the duration we complained multiple times and different people came to our rooms but still both was done. Msc’s Guest service does not care about customer service. They were extremely rude. I had to pay a bit extra for their “Fantastica” option. There was barley any food options. I paid to much money for it to just be a ripoff in the end. Don’t ever take this cruise line. There is no entertainment on board whatsoever, and entertainment on a cruise ship is very important. That was for a disappointment. The gym was very weak, four treadmills, four bikes and four ellipticals, yea because on a big cruise that makes real sense. There was even a wait limit how ridiculous, Food sucks, most of the workers are rude and don’t know a thing. One worker who was on the clock(mind you) in the buffet was very racist to me and my friends for no reason, never experienced so much hatred and rudeness from a cruise in my life. Such a waste of money and such a disappointment. Thank goddess for the ports of call only good thing about the week. I will never cruise with this line ever again. Read Less

Was happy to see South Africans working on board.. meeting new friends . Will do this again with my crew this year December. MSC keep it up... yhoo I was so scared because of previous reviews people saying bad things about MSC, I almost cancelled the trip yerrr...what I've learn is that you will never satisfy everybody just stick to your thing and do what you you know is best. This was my first time cruising trip. Now looking forward cruising from Rome and Naples as well as the Amalfi coast around December . Safety was the priority with MSC. Well done Read Less

This is our fifth cruise and our first with MSC. We got an excellent price offering about 10 months ago, so decided to give them a try. We certainly got our money’s worth. The ship was well maintained, tastefully decorated (not garish at all), and the crew were pleasant, professional, and polite. Entertainment was surprisingly good, but did get tired before the end of the 8 days, as they have one group of entertainers who were excellent but story lines were wearing thin by the end of the voyage. The entertainment director had a heavy Italian accent and spoke very little English, but to be fair the English were a small minority on board, and everyone from the cabin steward (who was fantastic), the dining room staff (equally so), and the customer service folks were fully fluent. The sailing was very smooth throughout. My pet beef on all cruise ships is the buffet, a crowded mass of humanity trying to shove as much food down their throats as time and stomach size permit. It was no exception here. But staff did close off venues throughout the day to restock and clean the facilities. I was particularly impressed that no one was permitted to touch the food, but had to use tongs to retrieve their particular delight from the table. As a tea drinker, it was my biggest challenge getting a cup, when the buffet room was closed the hamburger and pizza shops were open and had coffee, in one case tea, but no milk or cream to add to the beverage. My work around was to go to the bar around the corner as they always had milk, but a bit of a pain for something so simple. Also many of the hand sanitation stations spread around the ship were inoperable, so I ended up carrying my own to compensate when the machine did not function. I also like that attendants were at each entrance at the buffet and dining room. They were not at all intrusive but people did use the machines more often than I have seen before. Debarkation could get a little frustrating particularly when using tenders. The ship sub contracts out its tenders. The pilots did not speak English and the information on where the tenders actually were and how often they ran was obscure to say the least, but we managed amid some minor frustrations. I will state that at cruise end, (we departed in Bari) there was little guidance once on the dock as to go to marry up with our luggage as there were two lines one for us and another for the folks just getting off to explore Bari. Lastly our cabin. We were assigned cabin 9004, on the 9th deck and at the very front of the ship. We loved it. Tastefully laid out although smallish, our front view was unobstructed and excellent. There was an access door to the outside right beside our cabin and while the ship was not moving, one could go out and take in some fresh air and perhaps some outdoor photography without window glare. Too bad it got discovered about day 3 as at times we would look from our bed through the window only to see fellow passengers and some crew members enjoying the solitude, problem solved by drawing our curtains. All in all a very respectable ship and voyage, and yes I would certainly sail with MSC again. While not top tier, they are certainly a quality service provider. Read Less

I would try to give an honest review. First of all I would like to start of saying that I read a lot of negative reviews and was a bit upset before going on this cruise, but thankfully I read them after I booked so I could not really change anything. At this point I can say that the people who wrote those reviews either had high expectations or very spoiled. Now let me start my review with saying a few words about the food in the restaurants; at the dinner time the food is very good and tasteful, every night there is a different menu. The bread and all bread products are baked fresh every day. Breakfast buffet does not have a lot of variety, but you can always find something to eat, lunch buffet has a bigger variety and to different tastes. If you will be traveling with kids you can always find something to feed them with. The staff on the ship is very friendly and helpful. The entertainment is very good especially the shows. Every night there is a different show, the singers and all the entertainment staff are very talented. The cabin was clean, but small. The shower is small I think it is good enough for a child but not for adult, especially you are not skinny, and not petite. Of course there were some minutes too. For example I was surprised I had to pay for my daughter's ice cream. I didn't know it is equivalent to beverages. The only thing that I personally don't like about cruises not only this one is I think they are overcrowded. Everywhere you go you bump into people. I gave this cruise four stars because it is not perfect but overall is good and I enjoyed being on this cruise and would recommend it to others and would come back but to different itinerary but only because I like to see new places. The food was poor, even in the restaurant. We decided to go to the sushi restaurant which was also v. poor. The chicken from the noodle soup was dry and resembled the grilled chicken served as an alternative in the restaurant which make me think this was leftovers (paid 84 Euro's to find this out). The 2 hot tubs didn't work for the first 2 days of the cruise, then when they were repaired they had to be shared by over 2,000 cruisers...this was managed by the staff who allowed you a 5 minute turn...really! Are bags were lost on embarkation and damaged on disembarkation. The QUEUES please be very aware that it takes more than 40 minutes to get on and off the ship with only 2 entry/exit points and security that is severely understaffed. This meant significantly less time at destinations and having to cut short are plans. The entertainment, I have seen much much better amateur productions. Not even good. Our first cruise. Cabin was comfortable, albeit shower a bit small. Will definitely book a balcony cabin in future, just to have that outside private space for a coffee in the mornings and to relax with a book watching the world sail by. Mainly used the buffet for meals, as this suited us more due to itinerary and having a teenage son. only ate lunch and evening meal once in the main dining rooms. The meals in both the buffet and main dining room offered plenty of choice, were freshly prepared and were all really edible. Staff were friendly and helpful, although occasionally appeared rushed, especially around the pool bar - this is the only area were we felt the customer service was a little lacking. Saw 2 shows and both were entertaining. Casino was worth the occasional flutter although sadly no wins. Two further cruises booked, one with MSC and the other with Cunard. Read Less

We took the msc Lirica for 7 nights med. cruise. We chose this cruise because of the itinerary and quality Italian and international cuisine. (as the brochure stated). The food was below average to poor. At the dining rooms the food portions were very small, tasteless bland and luke warm, but often cold. I left most of the meals. We decided to eat at the buffet as was told food better than the dining area, but it was like being in a zoo being pushed and shoved around by people trying to get to the food! It was hectic, fast food, cafeteria, limited choice and poor quality luke warm/cold food. Chicken in parts were pink with some blood, steak was tough, stew grisly and bony, pasta pasta bland and overcooked. Breakfast the scrambled eggs tough and tasteless like cardboard, bacon strands of fat, yoghurt sweet and watery, even the italians moaned bout the food.I left the food, just picked at it to keep me alive! The meal time drink package was limited. The red wine cheap and acidy,I was told they only serve this cheap one with the package. food and wine made me ill all through the cruise. Entertainment poor and boring. Day time was boom boom boom like butlins camp. Staff unfriendly never smiled. Shuttle buses/boats not free, we didnt budget for this. last trip was dubrovnik 14 euros each the local bus was 1 euro!. What a rip off! Never again will we go on an MSC cruise esp. this one. The worst food/cruise ever. Value for money not good.DONT GO unless you want to starve or get ill! Read Less

We chose this cruise for the itinerary. (Venice, Greece, Dubrovnik) We have qa previously cruised on MSC Splendida and MSC Preziosa and were very impressed with both of them. The Lirica, however, was very disappointing. The ship itself was beautiful, clean and bright. The food was, at best, lukewarm, but often cold. The only things that were always hot was the coffee and the soup! The buffet was the usual hectic, fast food, cafeteria with limited choice and limited seating. Drinks service in the buffet was almost non existent. It involved ringing a bell on your table and waiting for someone to come and take your order, which often meant a long wait and even finishing your meal without a drink. They ran out of butter before the end of the cruise. Service in the bars and lounges was also very poor, with sometimes a 20 minute wait for drinks to arrive. It felt as if there was a lack of staff, and the staff that were there seemed a bit clueless, as if it was their first cruise. A few of them didn’t even speak or understand English. The daily entertainment was very “Butlins” and loud and annoying. We did enjoy the evening shows in the theatre, but found it very distracting that people were just walking in at any time during the show. Surely the doors should be closed once the show starts and no one else allowed in. All in all, we did enjoy the cruise, but mainly because of the itinerary and the weather. However, we are now not sure whether we would use MSC again. If we did, it would be on one of the larger ships, where the service was much better. Read Less

Best Vacation I traveled the Mediterranean aboard the MSC Lyrica for 8 days in September with a few girlfriends and had an absolute blast. I was amazed at how hard the crew worked during our stay. They were very attentive & accommodating. We paid for the unlimited drink package in advance and when we arrived, our cabin cards did not reflect such. We went to the reception desk and were taken care of with cards updated immediately. The food was mediocre in my opinion but that is not abnormal for cruise lines. There were options of salads, hamburgers, hotdogs, French fries & pizza every day & night so when nothing was appealing on the buffet there was always these options to fall back on. The breakfast was my favorite meal of the day, eggs made in every variety for different preferences. The dinner restaurant was enjoyable. Our servers, Antonio & Igor were very nice and provided excellent service. Trust me we were a group of picky eaters and they handled us with such grace. There was a hard time finding sun beds on the deck for relaxation, early bird gets the worm with the chairs & that’s normal. Walter waited on us regularly on the deck. This guy was always there hustling to provide superior service; quick, attentive and friendly. The drink menu had a large variety, Definitely something for all tastes. I enjoyed different mixed cocktails by day & wine or whiskey on ice by night. I did find many of the passengers were rude & lacked manners. Simple things we do in America like not cut in line and wait for an elevator to empty before entering was definitely lacking in abundance during my stay. Excursions were good, locations were amazing. There were a couple excursion guides that were a bit brash but balanced with the others that were friendly while informative. Absolutely beautiful sceneries. Would like to have had more free time on land when planned excursions. The entertainment was perfect. The nightly shows in the theater were different each night and had good choreography. My personal favorite place at night was the Lord Nelson bar. Nightly music by Nenad was so nice to settle down for the evening. He offered a variety of music choices and even tossed some comedy into his gigs. The service was superior in this bar than the others, all the drink waiters and waitresses were hospitable. The bartenders in this bar were also above average, Yash always had a smile on his face and eager to serve. If there’s such thing as regulars in a weeks time, this was the location. I not only adored the staff & entertainment in this bar but made friends from all over the world with fellow passengers. The music, service and company each night will forever hold a warm place in my memory of my time on the Lyrica. The ship was clean; bathrooms, sitting areas, bars, dining spaces, floors & cabins. I noted employees cleaning at all hours. Our cabin was cleaned twice a day and the entire ship was maintained well in accordance with the amount of people on the ship. Overall this was an exceptional experience and I will be booking with MSC again in the near future, along with strong recommendations to my family, friends & colleagues. Read Less

This was our first cruise not with Holland America but we were soon appreciative of the comfort and luxury offered by MSC. The accommodation was excellent and the food exceeded our expectations. The itinerary both on board and the excursions suited us well as we are both nearly 70 being able to relax and enjoy the leisurly days as we wanted was important. The public spaces were a little noisy but there were quiet places and all the staff were helpful and made us welcome. Embarkation in Venice could have been easier as the ship is a little way from the water taxi stop but a quick drink in one of the many comfortable lounges soon revived us. Dinning was pleasant and of a high standard, the staff really made us welcome and spoke good English making it easy for us to chat end enjoy the time spent with them. We have no hesitation in recommending the cruise on MSC Lirica and are looking forward to a repeat cruise. Read Less

We chose MSC through previous good experiences in 2008 and 2014. However, our experience this time left us feeling cheated. Ports of call were in most instances too short in time, particularly if you have limited mobility. The evening dining experience left very much to be desired. We had to complain numerous times about the temperature and standard of food being served, and it was barely tepid. The quality of the food also left a great deal to be desired. Moreover, as for the amount of food served on the plates, this left one feeling, was it worth the effort in ‘dirtying the plates’! It was pitiful. One evening my wife was served a 'Shank of veal' as a main course. It filled the plated about an inch thick comprising entirely of BONE & FAT. When questioned what was wrong, my wife explained, and she was offered another meal, but quite frankly she was put off by her experience. Additionally, I personally enjoy cheese following my meal. The amount served on the plate certainly would not have appeased a reasonably sized mouse! The wine as part of our all inclusive package was undrinkable. The self-service food quality and standard was appalling and not kept at reasonable temperatures. Hygiene, cleanliness of tables, seating etc, was very questionable too with only quick wipes of tables and remnants of food brushed onto floors and chairs! As for the cleanliness of the staff, their uniforms were in a dirty state and some were viewed with splits in trousers! As for deck bars, unless everyone had left the ship to go ashore service was virtually non-existent. One had to wait to be served at the bars as Bar Service waiters were at most times not present or insufficient. In the evenings, things were no better, and one constantly waited at the bars before being served. There appears to be no provision or training given to helping people with disabilities. We are made to queue as everyone else despite having restrictions in mobility and ability to stand for any period of time. Only once in the entire week onboard was I offered assistance in the self-service restaurant, a commendable gesture. However, on another occasion whilst walking around the self-service area, using a walking stick as always, I was made to back up by one of the staff as distinctly he would not give way to me. This was witness by another passenger who looked on in total disgust! Because of my limited mobility and after discussing and receiving a high recommendation from an onboard representative at the excursion office, my wife & I agreed and looked forward to an evening out for a Greek Night in Mykonos. We were to have left the ship at 5.00 pm for a 15-minute transfer by boat. A letter was delivered to our room with the timings. For whatever reason, we were late leaving the ship and arrived at the Mykonos port after 5.30 pm. We were all ushered off the transfer boat. After some commotion by the representatives we were herded onto another boat and taken across to the other side of the harbour. We were advised that it would save time! We arrived at our venue a few minutes before 6.00 pm. We were told originally dinner would be served 5.15/5.30 pm. We were at the Greek Night venue for just on an hour before being ushered out by 7.00 pm. The entertainment comprised of 2 people doing 2 short dances. Certainly nothing like our previous experience of Greek Nights. The food was tepid and diabolical. It comprised, a bowl with salad shared between two people. A plate was served to the table with a small amount of chicken on a stick and one similar of lamb, a couple slices of spiced sausage, with yoghurt a few chips. Of the six persons at our table, virtually all food served was returned uneaten. The dessert comprised of a small square of inedible sweet which was purported to be typically Greek. But, in my personal experience of Greek cuisine, I have never ever seen or tasted such! It was also stated that we would to be taken to see the sunset at a particular place but ended up after a short walk at about 7.15 pm on the harbour side as a group whilst the representative spoke to others in different languages. We missed the setting sun. We had to return to the ship via boat by 8.15 pm latest. For this we were charged an extortionate sum of 62.99 euros each, total 125.98 euros. Our previous experience of Greek Nights was excellent, enthralling and entertaining. This was a shamble and certainly not value for what we paid. We felt cheated. Having experienced this excursion we certainly would not book another, certainly not value for money. The shows onboard compared nothing to what we had experienced on previous cruises and cruise lines. One night comprised of a couple a songs being sung with a dozen other persons dressed up to the nines purporting to be dancers but just strolling and standing around looking pretty! Then we had to contend with the introduction of the Captain and Staff. The show element was no more than about 30 minutes! Embarkation was a mess with passengers waiting around for over two hours with no information as to what was happening! The ship had apparently docked late and previous cruise passengers were late getting off. We were only told this once on board. Disembarking was a fiasco again and being given the wrong information. On the surface the ship looked good but once you scraped away the surface paint, it left a great deal to be desired! Never again, we spoke with several other passengers who felt that they had been ripped off as clearly the service, quality/standards were not what MSC state and I quote “The MSC Cruises experience embodies the elegant side of the Mediterranean to create unique and unforgettable emotions for guests, through discovery of the world’s cultures, beauties and tastes. MSC Cruises translates its passion for the sea into a commitment to excellence in hospitality, professionalism, dedication and mastery of every single detail to ensure the complete happiness and satisfaction of each and every guest”. An absolute nonsense and certainly not what we had experienced. Lastly, at times communication was a problem in being understood and some staff were very rude indeed. Read Less

The dinners were better every day, and all waitress was simply great, i celebrated my birthday there and they made it unforgettable. the entertainment team was super energetic, they always gave the best of themselves, offering and they had always a big smile for you, but with the visits, you didn't have much time to do the activities. The best part of the ship was the lord nelson pub, despite we didn't smoke, the voice of konstantin it's just amazing even being sick, it was crazy the way he played, and all the pub team was just wonderful, we tried to go every night. All the ports was amazing, the only negative point was that you had to take the shuttle bus to the center for most cities, and these should be free. We enjoyed each second inside and outside this ship. Read Less

The ship itself is small carrying less than 2000 people the main issues we found is that there is no functional space big enough to accommodate passengers wishing to watch the shows provided by the animation team. This resulted in even if you found a seat, passenger standing in front of you obscuring your view with a result that you too had to stand to watch the show. That said the ship is very clean. The Cabins as you would expect are of a good standard we were in the new section of the ship added in the past few years so ours was not as old some of the others. On the most part I did not hear anything bad about the cabins or the service of the attendants ours seem to speak very little English and did not truly make herself known to us to provide the one on one service that you come to expect when booking a cruise. The ship has good dining rooms and facilities. We only used the buffet restaurant once choosing to have all our meals in the main restaurants this we found to be a great option with a greater array of choice. Without the greater numbers of people the noise and the pushing, barging and lack of tables that we found on our one visit to the buffet restaurants. The restaurant staff were very good always polite happy and willing to serve. The only issue that we found was that they did not seem do you want to serve tea or coffee at the end of the meal the option was never offered. That said they were in no hurry to push you out of the restaurant. The dining overall was fair but it was noted that the same menus were offered this year as were offered last year with no variance so even though we had a choice it did seem a repetition and that you had been there before. Again as with our previous trip. It was noted that the level of competent staff seem to have dropped, this again can be attributed to the launch of the new MSC mega cruise ships. Again a few staff seem to have been moved into positions that they were struggling to provide the level of service required. When spending this kind of money you expect first class service at all times. The ship seems to mainly cater for the Italians who seem to make up the vast majority after passengers. This caused many issues with some passenger who had never sailed with MSC before who thought they were treated as second rate passengers and pushed to the back of the que where service was concerned. There was a great push for you to buy the on-board packages provided this was especially true with the drinks package, a few people who had brought the drink package mentioned and it was indeed the case that the service in the bars was very slow. People that we spoke to were of the opinion that this was so you drink less and therefore could not use the drinks package to its full potential. We did observe servers in the bars ignoring passengers who had recently arrived and were waiting to be served. I myself opted to go to the bar on more than one occasion to get served as this had happened to me. I did find the bar staff in most cases to be helpful but again I did notice passengers orders were being combined by the servers to be taken out at one time instead of being taken out when you order was completed this meant that some servers carrying as many as 10 to 15 drinks on a tray at one time. This resulted in some passengers waiting up to 30 minutes to get their drinks. Where two or three trips could have to have been made to better service the passengers and reduce just waiting time that so annoyed most passengers. I know of at least 4 groups of passengers who refused to pay the service charges mainly due the level of service they received in the bar areas of the ship. This cannot be a great thing for MSC. MSC need to realise that they are judged as a brand on all their fleet. The older and smaller cruise ships with lower standards of service affect how passengers and potential customers perceive the brand. Whilst talking to passengers a number stated that they would never use MSC again based solely on the experience of this Cruise. We have another cruise bookedwith MSC in May next year and I am hoping that there is a vast improvement in the level of service that we receive or that to maybe the last MSC cruise we undertake. The itinerary for the cruise looked wonderful with great destinations what we did find was that on closer investigation some of the stops were only 6 hours this resulted in rushed time ashore with the constant worry and an eye on the time you had to be back on the ship. That said it did not take away from the beautiful locations that were visited Read Less

Fantastic Mediterranean cruise with the MSC Lirica. Amazing experience. I have seen so many beautiful places in Italy, Greece and Croatia. And that in just 1 week. Beautiful Greek islands. The varied coast of Croatia with Dubrovnik as a highlight. And of course Venice with all its water. Temperature averaged above 30C. Very delicious. The water temperature of the Mediterranean in late August is also excellent. For swimming ideal. To visit Venice with a ship is very special. It is also very nice to enter the center of Venice. Everyone in the center uses a boat. You do not see cars, buses and trains. Everything goes through the water in the center. Public transport is via a bus boat. Very cool. The MSC Lirica is a beautiful ship. A recently renovated boat that looks like new. There were 2.000 passengers on the ship, the maximum. There are ships with 4.500 passengers, but 2.000 I also find a lot. The service is good and very friendly. There is so much to eat and drink. Not normal. On board the ship you will find people from all over the world. Staff and passengers come from everywhere. That's pretty funny. A cruise ship is a small world in itself. Nice to experience. Highlight on board: the Lord Nelson Pub, with his modest singer and super guitarist Nenad Konstatin from the Czech Republic, and the sweet Mary from India, who is always ready to serve you. Finally, I want to thank my new Mexican friends for the Mexican Cuba Libres. My favorite drink from now on. Thanks everyone.. Read Less

We had never heard of this cruise line but ran the Eastern Italy and Greece and it fit our schedule. We didn’t have a lot of expectations of this cruise but it turned out to be one of the most fun cruises we have ever been on! As Americans we were concerned that we would not understand what was going on, but we actually did just fine as they make announcements and daily information letter in English and other languages. There is a wonderful show every night that was highly entertaining! Very talented performers! They also have a entertainment staff that run all the activities throughout they day and into the evening. They were so funny and engaged the guests with so much energy! They put on their own comedy show every night that had very few folks at the first night but by the end of the cruise there was standing room only! You could tell they loved their job! We met several staff members on board that we formed a relationship with which always makes a cruise more enjoyable. Our favorite bar was the Pub. Really have only a few negatives we found on board. Breakfast was not the best meal for sure. We only had lunch on board 3 times and that was good but found we liked eating in the dining room better for lunch. Dinners were fantastic! There was probably on 2 dinners that were not a good as others. We traveled with 4 of us and almost always each of us had something different so got to taste a lot of the food. The elevators are very slow, so we tended to walk up and down instead. Getting off the ship in ports could have been better. People can start this cruise at several ports so there was folks going on shore for the day and some leaving the cruise. For the most part we didn’t notice unless it was a port where there was a lot of guests disembarking like in Venice. They should have had a separate exit off the ship for those going out for the day as you had to wait in line to get off the ship along with everyone else. Takes away from your port times. Some of the ports had such a short time in them that was not fun in some of the ports. Some of them a few hours were enough, others, we would have loved a full day. The buffet area is not good! Way too small and hard to get around with the layout they have. Food was good, but it was really hot in the dinning area and very narrow. Not a good feel up there. Like I said before, we liked eating in the dinningroom for both Breakfast and Lunch better. Just a better feel. You could order off menu or go through the buffet in there. Overall, we had a blast on this cruise. Felt a little “fish out of water”the first day only because we felt like we were the only ones on board that spoke English, but by day 2 we were just fine and met folks from all over Europe, and had a blast trying to communicate with them! Just added so much to our experience! Give them a try, you may be pleasantly surprised! Read Less

We chose Lirica to sail across Italy, Greece and Dubronvik. Was happy with most of the ports, halts, amenities on the cruise and excursions. We took guided excursions at every stop and were satisfied with the trips. There was an excursion of Paradise island, Corfu, that got cancelled due to strong winds n rough sea condition but the cruise refunded the excursion fee in full. We faced some issues using our travelers card as it got blocked due to multiple transactions by the cruise. Its advisable to carry more than one card or have a back plan in case travelers card does not work. Most of the restaurant had set menu, depending on the theme nights, but we were lucky to get an Indian chef, from Pune, who prepared special Indian meals for us. My husband, being a vegetarian, was extremely pleased. My son enjoyed the kids club as he met a few english speaking kids. We booked a full board plan and balcony cabin but took yet another upgrade to include unlimited select beverages at all restaurants / decks, though we ended up using the deck 5 and deck 11 restaurants most of the time. Theater had a different show each night and was a great way to end each night. I wish the cruise is able to add a few diving excursions to its itinerary as we crossed almost 3 - 4 seas / ocean but could not dive anywhere. Read Less

We chose this cruise, because of the path it took and the timing for our travel needed to be in this specific window of time. The trip only included my husband and I. Our trip was Venice>Bari>Delos>Mykonos>Herkalion> Corfu>Dubrovnik>Venice. We opted for a room with a balcony, the aurea package which included unlimited*(select) drinks, a couples massage, access to Deck 13, preference seating during dinner with extended menu. We chose the excursions in Delos to explore the ruins, and our favorite excursion was the Dubrovnik cave snorkeling. On our own, we did wake boarding, parasailing and other water sports at a local place in Corfu. The staff was courteous and attentive. We had privacy when we needed but at times, it was difficult to find any seating when it was time to eat in the dining areas. We enjoyed the poolside area of the ship. Usually there was enough seating and Deck 13 was okay but exclusive. The massage at the spa was one of the best Ive ever had. We also had access to the sauna with the aurea package but did not use it as it was not coed and I did not wish to go sit alone and neither did my husband. There was a gym which looked pretty cool, but we did not use it. The entertainment on the ship, a dancey magic show, with singing. It was....sub par. Kind of silly, super cheesy and not really worth the time. Maybe those with children enjoyed it but as a couple of adults, we could take it or leave it. The casino, blah, not interested even with the tiny bit of allotted credits we had. Bingo was offered but seemed too expensive. We did choose to have our picture taken on one of the two formal nights. We really enjoyed getting dressed up and dancing. Our favorite thing to do after dinner was go listen to the lounge singer, who sang some in spanish, maybe they were Puerto Rican? They were fantastic. Also, listening to the piano being played in the other lounge area was nice. We danced and drank as much as we could. Then, we would get a couple of cappucinos or american coffees in the cafe area of the ship. We enjoyed our options at dinner. We were always at at the window area in the restaurant we ate dinner at every night. It was a really cool view but the sun gleaming in the window all day made this particular area very hot. The heat coming in combined with my husbands sea sickness, did not always make for an enjoyable meal. Most of our favorite foods were in the common eating areas where there was all you can eat pizza and sandwiches, and sweet treats. At one point, I had a little hint of a not so good time. I'll explain, I am very petite. I am under 5'0, therefore many times when seated, my feet dangle. Because of this, I often prefer to sit with my legs crossed in my chair, this is a habit and for comfort. I was sitting this way at dinner one night and the waiter told me to put my feet down. I was a little offended and embarrassed. Other than that, everything was WONDERFUL. Read Less

I surprised my wife with this cruise for our 10th anniversary after we talked about visiting Greece for this anniversary since last year. I chose this cruise based on the itinerary and the price for these great ports of call. The ports of call did not disappoint at all, whether it was Bari (go down to Polignano a Mare for a little bit while at this port), Mykonos (absolutely spectacular), Heraklion, Crete (a solid stop but didn't have enough time there to explore outside the city to see more impressive Cretan sights), Corfu (nearly as spectacular as Mykonos), Dubrovnik (incredibly beautiful as well), and of course Venice (which is amazing)! When my wife and I reviewed the MSC shore excursions after booking the cruise, we were disappointed in their offerings and asked our travel agent for her advice on what else we could do. She recommended Viator and we were very happy with their tours. We planned our own excursions in Bari/Heraklion/Venice, and used Viator for excursions in the other three ports. Viator had more interesting and MUCH less expensive excursions than the cruise ship offered. As an example, we did the Achillieon Palace excursion in Corfu through Viator and it ended up as a private tour (it was supposed to be up to 10-12 people but the tour guide chose not to cancel even though only my wife and I were booked for that day). The similar MSC excursion cost ~$15/person more and was large groups of people crammed on buses. Do a little bit of homework ahead of time and you can have phenomenal experiences for a lot less than you would pay through the cruise ship. The MSC Lirica was "stretched" a few years ago which added additional cabins but, as far as we could tell, no meaningful additional common spaces. This leads to the ship feeling cramped at times, particularly during the one full day at sea. Just temper your expectations with this ship and know that it is an older ship and not laid out to comfortably accommodate all the passengers. The service on the ship was excellent, from our room steward to the servers in the restaurants. They were very attentive and willing to help with anything. Since this ship is more of a value ship, they try to do lots of upsells from the moment you walk onto the ship. Whether it is the all inclusive drink package or a water package or a soda package, be prepared for people plugging these packages throughout the entire cruise. Our stateroom package included 12 vouchers each (total 24) for any drinks throughout the cruise (excluding premium drinks) and we didn't need any additional vouchers or packages. If you like to enjoy multiple drinks a day then you'll probably want to get one of the other packages at some point during your cruise. Up on the pool deck, you'll notice a delicious looking gelato bar, but unless you've purchased at least the all-inclusive standard drink package, you can't get any of that gelato without paying extra. Dining was a bit of a let down on this cruise from our previous experiences (Norwegian & Carnival). The main dining room (we were assigned to L'Ippocampo) was hit or miss, with most meals being misses. Out of the 5 meals we ate in the dining room, only 2 were above average. In order to get a more premium meal, the staff offers a lobster package (€22/meal w/ glass of prosecco) or a T-bone package (€18/meal w/ glass of red wine); we didn't opt to pay for any of these premium meals. The buffet areas in Le Bistrot and La Pergola had okay food most of the time, with occasional above average food. The MSC website shows two specialty restaurants (Kaito Sushi & Jia Yao) on the Lirica but only Kaito exists on the ship. Kaito also becomes a Bar/Dance Club after hours. The Entertainment/Activities on the ship were average to below average. The main ship theatre entertainment each night was well below average. The performers tried their best but the stage is small and not configured well; one night, the gala night (when you would expect the performance to be at its best), my wife and I walked out 15 minutes in because the performance wasn't engaging or interesting at all (several other individuals had been walking out since shortly after the program began). The theatre itself is on the small size for the number of people on the ship and the chairs are old and make it feel as if you're sitting on the ground. They offer some activities throughout the day and night. We didn't participate in most of them, but the dance lessons late at night in the Blue Disco Lounge were fun and the instructors very engaged and lively. Overall my wife and I loved this cruise, not for the ship itself or for MSC, but because of the amazing ports we got to experience. We met people at our dining table that are now wonderful new friends that we look forward to seeing again soon and we had fantastic adventures at each port. If you are looking for a stellar itinerary at a great price, this is the cruise for you. If you look more for the ship experience and its activities, then this may not be the ship/cruise for you. Evening entertainment was first class with spectacular shows and acts. Facilities were excellent on board ship. Our destinations were spectacular and extremely well organised. This was our 2nd cruise and in all fairness I have come to the conclusion that my husband and I are just not cruise people. We went on the Lirica after spending time on a bus tour of Turkey and 5 nights in Venice, these places were such a highlight of our trip, but our dream cruise of Croatia and the Greek a Islands was so disappointing. The Lirica is lovely ship and spotlessly clean and we were kindly upgraded from an outside cabin with balcony, to a suite. We appreciated the suite and although the upgrade didn't include all the bells and whistles we were very much appreciative of the extra space. The food was good, not great but was edible. We chose to eat mainly in the Dining Room as our experience in the bistro was brutal. The few times we ate in the Bistro area it was survival of the fittest, people shoving and pushing in and no cleared vacant tables. I really think that the lines for food could have been better organised as it is very frustrating to wait in line and have people constantly pushing in and not willing to take their turn. The tea and coffee station is located near an exit to the rear of the ship where the smokers can sit and causes nothing but congestion as people are entering and exiting where the coffee station is. There is certainly a language barrier on board the ship as no staff members or crew have English as their first language, we were given a daily information sheet in English but found communication with most on board very difficult. There is also too many smoking areas, the worse being a bar inside that non smokers need to walk through as a thoroughfare, not acceptable at all. Gratuities are added to you cruise card as well as a service charge , you have no control over who receives tips on your behalf and for all we know could just be lining the pockets of the MSC owners. Service was slow and sometimes orders were completely missed. Days at sea are just boring there is no other way to explain it, if you don't gamble at the Casino or want to be involved in silly childlike activities on the deck there is nothing to do. If by chance you can organise yourself to attend the nightly entertainment, be prepared after hanging around for 3 hours it lasts 30 minutes. We had the first sitting in the Dining Room at 6.45 pm so the only show time we could attend was 9.45 pm. On shore excursions are a rip off, one in particular was advertised at lasting 3 hours but failed to tell you 2 hours of that time was allocated to your free time. The itinerary stinks the ship travels slow to arrive in places and you are always rushed. We arrived at Ancona during siesta time, nothing was open an unable to shop all experience any of the tourist venues. We were misled on all our information regarding our visit to Mykonos and only spent a few hours there in the evening, such a disappointment. As you can see my husband and I were not impresses with our cruise experience and would never choose to cruise or recommend MSC. Read Less

MSC LIRICA out of Venice: We have always cruised on Norwegian and didn't think MSC would be much different, since the price is about the same. BOY WERE WE WRONG! The food was terrible! You have to dine at your designated dining time in the same restaurant every night. There are only two dining rooms, but they are the same menu. The food on the menu is quite limited. There is a cafeteria, but the food is just as bad and just as limited. The bar staff is rude. We went to one of the "parties" and waited 30 minutes for a waiter to take our drink order. My husband finally went to the bar and asked for a drink and they told him they would come and we waited another 30 minutes. The bartender will not take a drink order from passenger, a waiter must take order. The cabin just felt dirty. My bedspread had a patched hole. The TV was the old tube kind and was small and missing a button. The shower was so small you couldn't shower without the moldy shower curtain touching you. The fellow passengers were rude, and the children unruly. We couldn't go into the hot tub because it was filled with children. They charge you for water at dinner unless you have tickets and they charge you for tea if you have it with dinner. There is no coffee with desert in the dining rooms after dinner. The staffing ratio to passengers was inadequate. The staff was untrained and had a language barrier that contributed to their issues. Disembarkation was a fiasco! They make you check out of your room at 7:30 and will not let you disembark until much later. Our luggage was not available until 10:00 and the Venice port authority will not let you take your luggage off yourself. Read Less

This was our 3rd cruise but the first with MSC and, in terms of service, it was probably the worst one. To be fair though, it was probably also the cheapest. The ship itself was immaculate and well-maintained and all the public areas were kept very clean. Although most of the passengers were Europeans there were a number of English-speaking guests on board yet we didn't encounter any staff at all who spoke English as their first language. This made communication difficult at times. Embarkation: The embarkation process was a complete debacle. We were told that check-in was from 2-5pm and we were at the cruise terminal by 1:30pm. By then there was a long queue of people who were already checking in and, after we'd finally got our luggage checked through, we went upstairs to check ourselves in and were given a letter stating that check-in had been brought forward and our cabin would be ready for us by 1:30pm. It wasn't at all useful to receive this letter then - having it e-mailed to us the night before would have been much more useful. In the end we stood in a very slow-moving queue for over 2 hours before we were finally able to board the ship. This whole process could have been handled far more efficiently. Food: The food on board was hit and miss. Often items we ordered from the menu weren't as described, e.g. the Eggs Benedict served on a toasted muffin was actually served on a piece of soggy white toast, the salmon main course was certainly fish but there is no way it was salmon, etc. Breakfast in the a la carte restaurant wasn't great - service was often slow and some of the meals had obviously been sitting around for a while before eventually being delivered to us cold. Evening dinners in the a la carte restaurant were better - the food certainly wasn't top quality but there was plenty of choice and with 7 courses to choose from there was certainly no need to go hungry. The risottos were nice, although a little salty for our tastes, but, although there was a different flavour each night, some of them tasted the same. Also, the tiramisu could have been thawed a little longer before being served to the customers! There was plenty of choice in the buffet restaurant too but, again, most of it wasn't great quality. The meat from the carvery was often overcooked and tough and a lot of the desserts tasted the same. However, the food from the ethnic corner was usually quite tasty and the breads (made daily on the ship) were nice. The pizzeria served a choice of 4 pizzas daily and these were superb! Entertainment: The shows each evening featured some outstanding talent and were a highlight of each day. We didn't participate in many of the daily on-board activities as these weren't really our thing and, although the Animation Team had obviously been tasked with getting people involved, we found their enthusiasm somewhat false and nauseating. However, a lot of other passengers seemed to enjoy this aspect. Our 11-year old attended the Kids Club most days - he enjoyed some of it but found a lot of the activities were quite lame and childish. Our 13-year old daughter tried the Teens Club a couple of times but it seemed to be fairly non-existent so she gave up. That said, she was perfectly content reading her book on the Pool Deck most days. Cabin: Our cabin was serviced twice daily by a lovely Indonesian staff member who did a great job and always had a smile on his face, despite what must surely be a pretty thankless job. From what I can recall the cabin was a similar size to the cabins on our previous 2 cruises, i.e. small(!), but we didn't spend a lot of time in there. Our only real complaint about the cabin was the shower curtain, which kept clinging to us when we were in the shower. As well as being annoying this can't be hygienic. Staff: Some of the staff were very pleasant and reasonably efficient, some seemed to be completely incompetent, and some looked like they really didn't want to be there. Our Indonesian waiter in the restaurant each evening was a delight and did a great job of looking after the 8 of us at our table. However, a lot of the drinks staff were incredibly slow and we often had to wait for an unacceptable length of time for the drinks we'd ordered. Some of these staff would also create a much better impression if they smiled occasionally. I also firmly believe that there needs to be more English-speaking staff on board, particularly in the beverage areas. Ports: We chose this cruise for the itinerary and weren't disappointed. We didn't book any shore excursions and, in hindsight, this was the right decision. All of the ports we visited were easy to do on our own and I'd only bother with the shore excursions if we wanted to go further afield. However, I did so some research on each port before we left so that we knew what we wanted to see and do in each place. Split - This is a beautiful town within easy walking distance of the port. We spent some time walking around the old town and seeing the sights there and then walked up the hill to the lookout point for great views over the town and port. Santorini - This is a port where you need to be tendered ashore. We took the cable car up the hill but walked back down the path. Shopping is cheaper here than in other European cities we visited. Mykonos - We visited this port at night and were really disappointed we didn't get to see it by day. It looked like a beautiful place and all the shops were open till late. Dubrovnik - The ship provides a shuttle bus from the port to the town for 12,90 euro per adult and 9,90 euro per child. Alternatively you can get a taxi for 13 euro each way (which we did - this was a cheaper and quicker option for our family of 4), or take a public bus or walk 30 minutes or so. We walked around the historic walls and then walked through the town within the walls. Another beautiful city. Ancona - Easy walking distance to the town from the port. Some old Roman ruins here, a cathedral and a historic arch but not much else really. Overall we had a great time on this cruise but there were definitely aspects that MSC could easily improve on - mostly the service. For the reasons outlined above, we asked for some of the daily service charges to be removed from our bill at the end. We expected this would involve some arguing but were pleasantly surprised that our request was met without question. For this reason I would strongly recommend not paying the gratuities/service charges in advance. Read Less

Before my cruise last month, I was so apprehensive. I had read many reviews of the MSC Lirica, nearly all of them negative to the pint of hate. So with great trepidation I boarded mid October. The 11 days went so fast, I loved everything about the boat...the fact that it was 96% European speaking didn't bother me. I can communicate where little English is spoken. The cabin was spotless, my cabin staff meticulous with detail. The dining experience was fine. I dined in the dining room every night at a table with wonderful people, but all breakfast and lunches were in the buffet dining room. It is BUFFET, so what else do people expect. There is a fast rotation of food, cleaning tables, other guests taking up tables. It is a cafe buffet. The buffet on deck was the same. It's not the Ritz, but at no time does it portray to be. I like fine dining, good wine, great service and wonderful atmosphere....I didn't miss out. The 2 waiters who looked after my table and two others were very polite and hospitable. I think some people ask for too much, especially when the price is so affordable. I travelled on my own, so had a surcharge.....didn't bother me a bit. I would travel on Lirica again any day Read Less
