We had wanted to do a Viking river cruise and also Russia was definitely somewhere we wanted to see. So when the offer came through the post for a significant discount we jumped at it. We hadn't travelled with Viking before but everything we read about them beforehand was good and that certainly proved to be the case. We can't fault the organisation of Viking - everything ran like clockwork and we were always well informed. The staff onboard were wonderful - very attentive and friendly. Nothing felt like too much trouble. The food was excellent and a very high standard. The only problem was not eating too much! You could have a cooked meal for breakfast lunch and dinner, or a continental breakfast and cold lunch if you preferred. There were always several choices and often a local option. The portions don't seem very generous at first glance but in fact with the number of courses and because you eat three times a day, it is more than enough. The times of the meals were always adjusted if necessary to accommodate the excursions. The Akun was a lovely boat. It was spotlessly clean and well maintained. We were told by the staff that it is their best boat but that might just be banter! There were two bar/lounge areas but one closed at 7 which only left one with music. It would have been nice to have a choice in the evening. The Viking tour guides were outstanding. Their knowledge seemed never ending and their English was excellent. They made sure the tours ran without any problems which is an achievement when taking into account the number of people they had to keep track of and the number of other tourists at each destination. Most of the places visited were quite overwhelming and it was thanks to the guides pointing out selected items and giving information about them that kept you engaged. Viking obviously has very good arrangements with all the tourist attractions and you often go in before its open to the public. Despite the crowds, our groups gained entrance easily with the coaches managing to park in the best spots and tickets having been bought in advance. Some of the excursions used local guides who weren't part of the boat crew. They were also very good. Some of the smaller places visited when sailing between Moscow and St Petersburg did not have a big range of interesting things to see and there was an overload of churches and icons! Some of the guests found it difficult with the amount of walking and steps involved, but if you were reasonably mobile it wasn't too strenuous. Some specific details which we would have found it useful to know in advance are: CURRENCY- it is useful to have rubles for making purchases at markets or from small shops for tipping local guides/drivers. We got through £250-300 worth but you can get currency out from ATMs in the bigger places. (There is one in the gift shop at the pier in St Petersburg which we weren't told about). I believe that it might have been possible to pay in dollars in some places. You can use your ruble notes up by using them as part payment of your final ship's bill. CLOTHES-apart from the captains dinner and the trip to the ballet, no-one was very dressed up. Everyone was casual during the day as comfort is very important- take comfy walking shoes and the weather is unpredictable so warm layers and a rainproof coat are essential. When excursions kept you out late people didn't tend to change for dinner but when sailing most did with smart casual for men and trousers and more dressy tops for ladies. Lots of the attractions didn't allow rucksacks in and they (and often coats) had to be checked in. That was a good thing though as it was usually hot inside. EXCURSIONS-we prebooked optional tours and also where there was a choice of included tours before we left, but you can easily do it onboard. The bus and walking city tours both include a fair amount of walking. The insides of the attractions are visited at great speed and it can feel rushed but you learn a lot and with so many things to fit in it would be hard to take it any slower..In the 2 cities there are bus transfers for every trip as you moor about 45 mins outside the historical area, but the traffic is heavy and it can take longer. There is a day in each place with nothing included although there are optional tours. Some people hired their own private guide on those days to give them a tailored tour. In Moscow there are very luxurious river boats which we didn't get to go on but you can make arrangements with reception for a booking and taxi. On those days it might be worth asking reception and doing something independent. TIPS-we found it a bit confusing despite the info in the Viking book which arrives with your paperwork. Basically local guides (as opposed to those on the boat) and the bus drivers can be tipped in rubles at the end of each trip. They suggest 100 for the driver and 500 for the guide per couple. But it is discretionary and varied quite a bit. The Viking guides however are tipped at the end of the cruise in cash and you are given an envelope for this which is anonymous. They suggest $10 per person per day but again we heard a lot of variations of this being given! The remainder of the crew on board they recommend $15 per person per day but this can be added to your invoice and paid by card. Read Less

Chose this cruise to enjoy the wonderful history, architecture, culture and entertainment of Russia. It was so much more than we anticipated. All the shore excursions, those included and those we chose to add on enriched our lives and view of Russia. We couldn't believe the beauty of the churches we visited - even a monastery from the 700s!! Our main reason for booking this trip was to see St. Petersburg with its rich cultural history and palaces. I wondered why we were spending 3 days in Moscow - thought it would be boring. Wow, was I mistaken! Loved Moscow, specially our tour of Moscow at Night and river cruise at night! Dining was fabulous, with Russian specialties offered almost every meal. Entertainment was enjoyable, and we couldn't believe we saw the ballet Swan Lake in St. Petersburg, Russia! We enjoyed the diversity between the large cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg with all the small towns we visited inbetween. Read Less

The cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg gave us the best chance to experience the most of Russia and the two most impressive cities. Everything went smoothly from flights to airport pickup and return, and the excursions were well planned and timed for maximum experience and exposure. We especially enjoyed the walking tours through the cities, and Moscow by night. The concerts and ballet that were included for all travelers provided a variety of cultural experiences that made this trip special. The ship was comfortable, and the experience of going through all the locks on the waterway, and being able to disembark at each location right at the city allowed for easy access on each stop. The ships crew were accommodating and attentive, and the dining was enjoyable allowing for us to dine alone or with other travelers as we desired. This was our first experience on a river cruise and with Viking, and we certainly plan to take other Viking river cruises in the future. Read Less

We had been looking at Viking Cruises for a year before we went on this cruise and selected Russia because it is a unique destination. It was just my wife and I with no children. The crew was fantastic and we really felt cared for. I particularly enjoyed the various lessons that we had each day on history and the language. That was a great aspect for a country like Russia where we didn't feel we knew a lot about it before going. Now we really would feel a lot more comfortable there if we went back. Food was excellent, in fact better than any ocean cruise we had ever been on. Excursions were very enjoyable and interesting. The Moscow and St. Petersburg excursions are longer and the days more packed with things to do, which was great, but we also very much enjoyed the small town/city visits where we had more relaxation time overall. We would have enjoyed more time to browse the crafts and local items available on many of the excursions but we also felt that if we hadn't been interested, the tour guides were helpful to some degree in keeping us unmolested. The shipboard tour guides were excellent and good people. We had a cabin with a balcony which was a reasonable size. The balcony was very usable for us on this trip because the weather cooperated so well, the temperature was crisp and cool most days and dry. Internet connection was adequate throughout the trip. Overall, we loved the trip. The cruise exceeded our expectations particularly in terms of the service and the food. We will do another Viking Cruise in the future. Read Less

We wanted to experience Russia. Upon arrival in Moscow, it was raining. The agent from the ship, who met us, said normally it might take 45 minutes to get to the ship but this is rush hour and it is raining. What a surprise! The Moscow traffic was as bad as any I have seen in L.A. Bumper to bumper all the way for an hour and a half. This was the only time it rained on the whole trip. The number of cars was a huge surprise and they were all very nice cars from every manufacturer. We were so pleased with our cabin. It was plenty spacious. The bed was very comfortable and firm. The shower was very nice and there was plenty of room to store the suit cases under the bed. Every aspect of this trip was excellent. The service was efficient and friendly. The restaurant was extremely nice with an excellent menu. We appreciated the broad selection and the excellent, friendly and helpful service. We wanted to learn Russian and Nadia, Dasha and Kirill became our good friends and eagerly helped with this. We had such a nice time with them. It was a highlight of the trip. They were such good Ambassadors for the Viking Akun. The shore excursions were very interesting well guided and organized. We were kept so busy there really was not much time to be spent in our cabin. We particularly liked the trip to central Moscow on the Subway, The Red Square, Gum Department store, the Kremlin, The family visit in Uglich. The ship was very comfortable and the lectures were interesting and informative. The vodka tasting was much fun and this trips to the Kizhi State Open-Air Museum a high light. Read Less

Attended Travel/Cruise Show Ex Cel London January 2016 was impressed by both the stand and the sales representative. 'Newbie' cruiser and lone traveller. Found the both the ship and the staff to be wonderful (note nothing to compare with being my first!) Cabin excellent and daily housekeeper wonderful everything replenished if when required The dining service was excellent at all meal times, mentioned what I believed to be a very average quality of orange juice at breakfast. Once mentioned freshly squeezed provided every day (well impressed) Evening entertainment good and ample additional activities i.e. Russian lessons, cookery class, vodka tasting. Service provided by Senior Crew i.e Hotel Manager, Tour Director, Maitre d' hotel all exemplary. Ports and shore excursions good if somewhat tiring at times particularly at the beginning (Moscow traffic not helping). Also at the end of the cruise very 'full on' to ensure excursions both included and additional had been covered. If you want a restful and relaxing cruise this is NOT it and I in no way convey that in a derogatory manner Read Less

Every aspect of the trip was superior. On and off the ship was without a hassle, front desk was always easy to access and every question got a quick answer. Especially enjoyed the food service from 2 wonderful young ladies from Serbia, Maria and Anastasia. The food was, without exception, excellent. The Viking Burger was the best ! Everything that was promised was delivered and even the weather was excellent. Our tour guides were exceptional and the on board presentations were especially enlightening and seemed to provide a honest discussion of Russian history and life. From the time we landed in Moscow to the time we left to the extended trip to Helsinki, we never touched our luggage. The service we received was exceptional. The food was fantastic. Our expectations were exceeded only by the restaurant service staff. Service to our cabin was absolutely perfect. The first day on board we found to large bottles of water in our cabin. We emptied the bottles before the evening. From that point forward on the second day we received two bottles in the morning and two in the evening without requesting anything from staff. Everyone paid attention to all our needs without being asked. Ports and shore excursions were unbelievable. We learned so much history from our leaders and they were exceptional in their knowledge of the country. We made a number of cruise friends that we plan to stay in touch with. Read Less

We chose this cruise for the Russia experience. We absolutely loved the small ship and the small number of passengers. Our cabin was perfect - clean and plenty of room. The food was fantastic and the dining staff met all of our needs and requests. I cannot say enough about the staff supporting the entire ship and cruise. Not only did they take excellent care of us, we had a great time getting to know them personally. The shore excursions were extremely well planned. The excursion leaders were well educated about Russia not only for current life styles but educating us about Russia from early history. This was a trip of a life time for my wife and myself. We thought that this would be a one time trip but we are now looking and planning for future river cruises with Viking. Meeting other people on the cruise was wonderful and finding out that most of them had taken more than one cruise with Viking and as many as seven cruises. We are looking forward to our next Viking River Cruise. Read Less

Once on the boat, the crew and staff were wonderful. They gave exceptional personal service. Tour guides were outstanding. It is obvious that every employee enjoyed what they were doing. I will definitely take another Viking Cruise. I cannot wait to do another cruise very soon! This trip had a great balance between sight seeing and relaxation time. I enjoyed the shopping on the boat. The quality and cost of the items was very good. I would have liked having some exercise facility on the boat, but other than that I have nothing but good things to say about the cruise. I liked having the option to choose an more physically demanding tour. I also was surprised that the ship had an on board physician. Once again, an outstanding trip!!! Read Less

We always wanted to see more of Russia than the usual port-call at St. Petersburg on a typical Baltic cruise (did that years ago). So we did the 12-night Viking river cruise on the Truvor from Moscow to St. Petersburg. Our family and friends were concerned about our extended stay in Russia. Other passengers reported the same concerns from their friends and families. Forget about it -- this trip is fantastic! Exceeded our already high expectations. Everyone had a marvelous time on the Truvor cruise. The ship was comfortable and clean. Every amenity is included. The staff knows your name and preferences by the 2nd day. If you enjoy cocktails, buy the beverage package even though beer and wine is included at meals. With the package you get a much wider choice of beverages. We met typical Russians on the street, in stores and in their homes. They could not have been friendlier or more hospitable. The ship's staff was outstanding: Hotel Manager Frank was extraordinary -- taking care of any issues that came up immediately and professionally. Tour Director Kathrine took pains to explain every detail of the activity-planned experience. The chef Jurgen took care to make sure our meals were prepared to order. NOTE: This is a very active itinerary. If you participate in the offered excursions and activities, you will reap many new experiences and benefits --seeing and doing things you never dreamed of (vodka tasting, Russian cooking classes, meeting Russians in their homes, sightseeing throughout the traveled areas, Cossack dancing shows, etc). Highly recommended for people seeking a new cruise experience. Read Less

This was an absolutely first rate experience. The crew were excellent - ranging from the chambermaid who left our cabin looking spotless to the serving staff - an excellent mix of Russian and Philippino staff. Cruise Director was very good. The ship is very comfortable with lots of places to sit (Viking Truvor) and they made a real effort to make the trip special - an impromptu BBQ at lunch time on the Sun Deck and two cocktail parties with limitless Russian 'champage'. As much wine or beer as you could drink at meal times. Bar prices, in Units=US $,were high (for a post Brexit Brit) with a tonic costing nearly £4 - and unless you say just a little ice you have a glass full of ice and very little tonic. If you are a light sleeper avoid Cabin 417 on the Upper Deck as it is just below the piano in the bar! 413 has a pillar in it - as do other cabins - so worth checking for one withou when booking. The shore excursions were generally excellent although the Ballet in St Petersburg was danced by a stand-in troupe while the real professionals spent the Summer touring. Read Less

We've never been to Russia. This was the perfect way to get introduced to Russian culture and people. Our trip started at Moscow and ended at St. Petersburg. That was a lucky choice since that is probably better than starting going the reverse direction. For us, the airport at Moscow was 2 hours from where the ship is docked. Whereas the St. Petersburg airport is only about 1/2 hour away from the ship. I would rather deal with that long trip to the airport at the start of the trip than on the last day. We did get to ship late and the dining room was held open for us that needed a meal prior to turning in. Very considerate. Everything about this trip was first class - the accomodations, food, service, tours, entertainment, etc. Love the lectures about Russian history and language. Extremely helpful and friendly crew and staff. Really can't say enough about the staff and crew we had on our trip. Very friendly, considerate, and helpful, but not annoylingly so. They really did bend over backwards to accomodate our requests. The excursions were awesome. Don't miss the traditional Russian music concert. We did study guidebooks about Russian culture and language beforehand. That made the tours that much more interesting. Since this was our first ever trip to Russia just about everything we saw blew our minds away. Minor point - I wish there was a fitness facility with maybe just a few treadmills, some light weights. You do walk during the tours, but not enough to really get any exercise. This review is from a couple who do more adventure type trips. By cruising standards the Viking trips are small but for us having 150+ other folks on board seemed very large. However, everybody we met on board were wonderful. And we just soaked up the Russian scenery and culture. We had a wonderful time !! Read Less

This was the first time that my husband and I went on a cruise. The cruise itself was wonderful. I can't think of anything that could have made it better. We had a wonderful room which was much more spacious than I had imagined. And the twice daily housekeeping by Anna was excellent. My husband had a birthday while we were on the tour and Happy Birthday was spelled out in candies on the bed and a bottle of champaign left in the room. The food was excellent at very meal with enough options to keep anyone happy. The whole cruise runs like a well oil machine. Although the tours went at a faster pace than my husband and I usually travel, they were well organized and all of the local guides were well informed and kept things interesting. There were lots of fun activities and informative lectures onboard the boat. The crew was wonderful. I would not be able to think of one negative thing to say about any one of them. And of course meeting all your fellow passengers from around the world is certainly the highlight of any tour you take. The only negative comment I will make about this trip had to do with our flights and not with the cruise itself. We did not get final flight details until very late so were unable to make any changes to them. We did not arrive at the boat until 1:00am on July 6th, missing the first day of the tour. And we had to leave the boat at 3:15am on the last day of the tour. For the amount of money we paid I truly believe that Viking ciould have arranged more convenient times for us to travel. One helpful comment I can make is in regards to the optional tours. Unless it is something that you really have your heart set on doing, I would not sign up and pay for any of the optional tours. All of the tours that are included plus the activities onboard will keep you very busy. What free time you have left might be better spent enjoying a drink in the bar with all the new friends you will make. Read Less

Excellent cruise! We were attracted to the small ship experience after hearing horror stories about the small cabins others told us about. The small ship Viking river cruises had great reviews and their attention to detail made the cruise a great value. The room, the food and the staff all surpassed our expectations. The excursions were a delight and the optional ones (even though they were pricey) really added a lot to the total experience. We would have liked to spend more time in the "Red Square Department Stor" When we arrived We were greeted by a Viking host that really eliminated the travel stress. Moscow is an exciting and vibrant city; the Moscow shopping was an amazing surprise. We wish we had booked several more days there. Most of the shore excisions were fun and informative but we would recommend that you diplomatically insist more individual photos of you and your party if you plan on purchasing the photo thumb drive at $45. The Russian food on the menu was wonderful, the staff is fabulous. All the food was terrific. The only down side for us was a guest (80 yr old man and his wife) who could not stop talking, loudly during the bus rides while the tour guide was speaking. Several folks asked him to stop, but he just did it anyway. Extremely rude. And interfered with the atmosphere aboard the buses. Unfortunately we were assigned a bus for all the tours and he was with us always. And I'm 75. By this age one should know better how to behave. If I start doing this at 80, please stop me!! In future I would explore the embarkation city , One of the draw backs was the traffic in Moscow which added many unproductive hours to the day which would have been better served by visiting the sites , is there not a way to moor closer to the center of town? While we have done several ocean cruises this was our first river cruise and our first experience with Viking. We were on board the Viking Truvor. Viking downplays the ships they use in Russia in comparison to their European cruises. After spending 14 days on the ship we do not understand why they do this. While maybe not as modern as some more recent additions to the fleet, Truvor was immaculate, superbly maintained, very comfortable and had an outstanding crew. We had a veranda cabin on deck 4. Cabin was well laid out and very usable. Everything worked the way it is supposed to. Our cabin attendant kept the cabin immaculate. Food is of course subjective. We mostly did the continental breakfast in the Panorama Lounge looking out over the bow of the ship. Good light breakfast selection which was what we were looking for. Two very nice Russian young ladies took good care of us. We also did lunch here most days. Dinners in the main dining room, which is large enough to seat all passengers were mostly very good, a few were excellent and a couple were just OK. Overall the food was better than what we had on our last ocean cruise with Celebrity. Many Russian specialties were offered, including a theme dinner and a buffet on the sun deck one afternoon while we were on the waterways. These were all really good and well worth trying. The chef was very visible and friendly. The maître d – Roland was far and away the best maître d we have every encountered. He actually worked the dining room helping the staff and chatting with guests. Overall we would rate the food as very good and have no complaints. A general note on the staff. Everyone on the ship from the folks maintaining our rooms, the 3 on board Tour Directors, the Hotel Manager, and the Filipino and Russian staff in the dining room and lounges was superb. Friendly, knowledgeable, and a pleasure to travel with. The presentations from the on board Tour Directors covering Russian history up to today were very well done and informative even for someone who is a Russian history buff. Tours from the ship were all very interesting and worthwhile. Local guides spoke excellent English and were very knowledgeable. Viking offers a number of optional for a fee tours on this voyage and we took advantage of many since this was a one time trip for us. Moscow was fascinating particularly traveling on their subway and we especially enjoyed the evening folk instrument concert. The stops at the smaller towns on the way to St Petersburg were all very different and informative. We found the home visit and the wood stave churches on Kizhi Island to be the outstanding highlights – but all stops were very good. St Petersburg is totally different from Moscow. Seeing the Peterhof, the Peter and Paul Fortress and Catherine’s Palace and attending a ballet performance were highlights. Overall this trip rates way up there with our favorites and we would highly recommend for anyone interested in the history, culture and sights of Russia. Traveling with Viking on this trip was a real pleasure. A few things to be aware of: The Moscow airport (DME) is at least a two and a half hour and up to a four hour drive from the ship. Moscow traffic is incredible (fifth worst in the world) so it takes up to 1.5 hours to go from the ship to the center of Moscow and back. Some days we made this trip 3 times which is a lot of wasted time. Viking should consider options for folks to stay in Moscow for lunch rather than always going back to the ship. While we expected it in St Petersburg, the large amount of tourist activity in Moscow was a surprise to us. The Peterhof and Catherine’s Palace in St Petersburg are must do activities. We were disappointed by the tour of the Hermitage, very crowded and very rushed. Do not assume that in Moscow and St Petersburg that the “in depth” walking tours cover the same highlights as the bus based tours. In St Petersburg we had signed up for the walking tour not realizing that it did not go to the Peter and Paul Fortress which we wanted to see. Easy enough to swap but we would not have known this if we had not asked one of the local guides. Read Less

Friendship instead of enemies. Trust instead of fear. Beauty instead of ugliness. Viking's well planned submersion into everyday Russian life made our world a lot smaller. We loved every moment. Seeing the beauty of architecture and landscape. Exploring museums, churches and government buildings. Eating a home prepared meal with a salt-of-the-earth Russian couple who toured us around their backyard garden and proudly showed us chickens, rabbits and bee house. All of the above plus more made this holiday one of the best we have taken. I could not recommend it highly enough. Although this holiday was not cheap, it was worth every penny we spent. Saw some amazing places and met some lovely people from all over the world. Will definitely be going on another Viking cruise soon. Read Less

We chose Viking to be sure the ship would be nice. The ship was in good condition and met and exceeded our expectations. Going to Russia can be daunting. Once we got past the hassle and expense of the Visa, everything was fine. Customs was very easing coming and going. Viking sends one of their excellent shipboard guides to meet the group and that went very well. We were greeted with champagne and a great buffet dinner. This cruise was well planned. The shipboard guides and local guides were informative, likeable, and very well educated about Russia and life in general. They gave afternoon cultural talks which were like the lectures from your best and most interesting college professors. We went into Moscow on our own one day and did the Kremlin Armory and Diamond Fund. Good choice and easy to do on the Metro. This was the only thing we did on our own. We do not take canned tours but all of these were excellent and even better than going on our own. We paid dearly for the Private/Early tour of the Hermitage. Money well spent. We were the first in every room thanks to our wonderful Viking guide, Natasha...magical. Snow our first day but just enough to be fun. So much happened. To mention a few highlights: Waltzing in the Governor's Palace, Ballet in the Imperial Hermitage Theater, Sunset at the Catherine Palace, Strolling village streets. Great food and fun fellow passengers. And meeting so many friendly, hardworking Russians. One of our best trips. Read Less

This was the absolute best way to get a taste of Russian metropolitan and village life! Viking's shore excursions were perfectly tailored to provide that broad overview of life in Russia. This was our third Viking River Cruise. We love the way Viking provides such a worry-free venue. You know you will be well cared for from the time they pick you up at the airport to the last drop off for your trip back home. The crew, the boat, the food, the activities were all exemplary. I think the activity passengers really appreciated most was the open and honest way the Russian staff addresses modern life in Russia. Those talks were well attended and refreshingly open. We specifically chose to cruise in October because we were hoping to catch the fall colors along the Volga River. We were not disappointed! The river was lined with a wall of gold Birch trees along the length of the cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg. Read Less

We are seasoned travelers and have been all over the world on land, sea and river tours. Without a doubt, the Russian River Tour was at the top of our experiences. The activities, tours, guides and lectures were excellent. The guides and lecturers were very well informed and answered all our questions, openly. Everything was very organized from airport greeting to airport farewell. Our suite on the Truvor was roomy and well appointed. We loved the towel elephant our room attendant made. We especially loved the twin sinks in the bathroom. Unfortunately, we felt that the food was not excellent. We were served lamb and poultry that was severely under cooked. For the most part the food was good. We enjoyed the Swan Lake ballet, folk dancing and folk instrument concert. Our flights to and from our destination were very good. We highly recommend this tour. The service on board was excellent. Our room was quickly made up each morning and the evening "turn down" was great. The ship had an elevator but it was at the back of the ship near the dining room. Anyone with a mobility problem would have difficulty with the steep stairs. Read Less
