Actually, my travel partner chose this cruise in Russia, but I was happy to go along. The stateroom was nicely appointed, although the bathroom was a bit cramped. We went so late in the season that we didn't get to enjoy the verandah much due to the cold and sometimes rainy weather. The excursions were well planned with a variety of activities. Tour guides -- both from the ship and local -- were extremely knowledgeable and proficient in English (big PLUS). The food was varied, plentiful, and very delicious. The meals were timed to accommodate our tours, so we never had to worry about getting to the dining room at a particular time. Crew members were always friendly and helpful. We especially enjoyed the native dancers in St. Petersburg, the concert in Moscow, and the Swan Lake Ballet at the Hermitage Theater. As I am an inexperienced traveler, I appreciated the all-inclusive aspect of this trip -- housing, transportation, tickets, special events, tours, etc. Highly recommend this cruise and this company. Russia was a great country to visit. Always felt well taken care of by Viking. Enjoyed every land tour. The guides were excellent and very well informed, The buses were clean, and audio the ear plugs worked and were reasonably comfortable. The life on ship was relaxed. No one pushed us to finish meals before we were ready to move on to some other activity. Nothing was rushed. Be prepared for exceedingly heavy traffic in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Neither port is close to the center of the city. The journey to the tours was very slow! The bus drivers were excellent. We were very happy we extended our cruise/tour in St. Petersburg. It gave us extra time to enjoy a fantastic city and attend a ballet and organ festival. Read Less

Four years ago I had spent 1 1/2 days in St. Petersburg on another cruise. It was not enough time and this opportunity came and we (3 other retired school teachers) planned the trip six months before our departure. I have previously been on Viking River Cruises and appreciate the educational forums and the included tours in each city. The home visits are always attractive to me and I appreciate the opportunity to meet others in the small group settings. The dining room staff was courteous, efficient, and always made us feel special. The food was excellent and I especially enjoyed the root vegetables prepared in numerous ways. I do have a "sweet tooth" and found some of the pastries to be a little bland. My traveling companions had not been on a Viking River Cruise previously and they were positively impressed, also. My next cruise may be to Iceland! Read Less

Although my husband and I are not cruisers, we thought it was the best way to see Russia and we were right. The itinerary and the excursions offered were outstanding. We had opportunities to see other places that were not included by taking the subway in St. Petersburg and in Moscow. The crew was superb and the guides Viking selected were very knowledgeable and helpful. We loved the trip and even if we still don't like to cruise, we recommend this cruise to see Russia. Chef Marcel was amazing and the food was incredible. Andre and Micha were fantastic waiters. Paulina, our guide for most of the excursions, was incredibly knowledgeable and generous with her answers. The local guides were equally knowledgeable. The tour director, Douglas, did everything to make our cruise fun and the excursions worth our while. We also appreciated the history lectures on board, as well as the language lessons. The itinerary was perfect because the villages we visited were all unique and different from one another which provided us with a remarkable experience.. Read Less

The time of year was an important consideration, because we didn't want to go during the height of the summer heat or as weather was turning cold. We have spent a lot of time in Western Europe and thought it was time to go to Russia. First, the food was fantastic, as Viking always serves great food. The cabins and the longboat were immaculate. The daily tours were worth every moment as history unfolded in front of you. We enjoyed the guides giving optional free lectures on the history of Russia for during the days we were traveling between towns. The variety of tours covered all aspects of Russian culture and the Russian peoples lives from ancient days through current today. The variety of activities included night tours, city tours, tours by water in Moscow and St. Petersburg, museums, summer and winter palaces and plenty of churches with fascinating histories. We didn't really know what to expect and are so glad for the Russian experience with Viking Tours. Read Less

This was my first trip to Russia. I had been on a Viking River cruise before and was impressed with their service. We spent a number of days in Moscow to start and ended with a number of days in St. Petersburg at the end. We saw all of the typical tourist sites - Kremlin, Red Square, St. Basil’s, Hermitage, Catherine Palace, etc. The city tours were great, but be warned there were miles and miles of walking on some of them. The river cruising was beautiful and we stopped in a number of unique ports and interesting cities. We always had a local guide with us who was very informative. Some were delightful. There was lots of “wodka” available on the ship - at tastings, lunches, and events. The three Viking guides were very knowledgeable and we had classes on history and language. The cabins were very nice. A pleasant surprise was the very large veranda on our cabin. The ship used to be an ocean going vessel - the verandas were large and square, not like the small, narrow veranda I had in France. The food was excellent. The service was wonderful in the dining room. The reception staff were very helpful in recovering a tablet computer that had been left on a bus. The Viking flights were uneventful, but due to limited flights to/from Russia, we had to leave at 3:00 am on out disembarkation day. That made for a very long day. Read Less

My husband and I felt that we knew so little about Russia, and we were, therefore, anxious to take a Viking cruise to learn more. We had been on a previous Viking cruise down the Rhone, but this cruise offered so much more, including spending more time in Russia and learning more about a country we weren't familiar with. The ship, although older than the one we had taken on the Rhone River, still offered plenty of room, and we were looked after, not only on the ship but also on the shore. Viking paid our air fare from Seattle to Moscow and from St.Petersburg back home, and they met us on our arrival and helped us get to the airport on our return. Our cabin was well situated and comfortable, and we enjoyed sitting on the veranda occasionally. The food was plentiful and delicious for every meal, and we had choices that assured we would never go hungry. The dining area was attractive with seating for two people or up to eight per table. The food also included some Russian dishes. And breakfast or lunch were provided buffet style in a smaller lounge or in a smaller area of the dining hall. I was so impressed with the pleasant wait staff, who were efficient and friendly. Our entertainment onboard was most often lectures on various aspects of Russia, and we both learned so much before and after our on-land excursions. We had time to shop a bit at street stands, art or history museums, or even on the ship. Among the activities that most impressed us were visiting a home in Uglich for refreshments including homemade vodka, visiting a local school in the same town, attending a ballet in St. Petersburg, riding on the subway in Moscow, cruising along the Volga and other rivers, seeing the surrounding countryside, and touring significant churches and museums. Our tour guides were so knowlegable and answered our questions easily and with complete candor, and our tour bus drivers were polite and offered us such smooth travel. I would definitely go on this cruise again and would be assured I would learn something new, despite the past lectures and tours. This cruise was so different and so significant that my husband and I probably bore our friends by talking about it often and showing photos! Read Less

We had heard from neighbors and friends that the cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg was excellent. With the Hermitage Museum as one of the highlights of this cruise, we signed up! Embarkation and disembarkation went smoothly. The Viking Akun was a lovely ship, and our veranda cabin was perfect. The dining was outstanding. Chef Leonides and his crew served wonderful food with great presentations. Cruise Director Margo had wonderful games in the lounge in the evening and encouraged all of us to dance. The Russian history and language lessons were wonderful. The crew were impeccable in their service. We enjoyed all of the ports and shore excursions. My husband and I traveled alone - no children. Yes - I would go again and highly recommend this cruise. Highlights of the trip include Moscow and its Red Square, the Kremlin, the Astronaut Museum; Yaroslavl, and of course St. Petersburg - the Venice of the North - with delights such as the Hermitage Museum and Catherine's Palace. Have traveled the world during 27 years in the Us Navy. Never been to Russia before. Not only were we shown the country, our Viking guides provided us with in-depth political and social background to better understand the mind set on the Russian people in 2017. We sometimes were breasted outboard of other cruise boats. On every such occasion, I noticed that our Viking staff manning the quarter deck were more attentive, better dressed and the gangway cleaner than those on the other boats. My wife has celiac disease and therefore allergic to gluten. We explained that to the chef when we embarked, then never had a problem with the food. At each and every meal, special tension was given to my wife’s meals to ensure nothing served to her contained wheat. The was a huge relief ot her and greatly appreciated by me. Because our initial experience aboard Helgi was so positive, we are sailing with Viking again next spring to Eastern Europe. Four of our friends are joining us!. Read Less

We joined two other couples on this cruise. I was not in our plans, but we decided to join them, and we're glad we did. This was our 2nd Viking cruise, and we high expectations, based on our previous Viking cruise "The Grand European Tour" The staff and service were excellent. The dining was outstanding. Chef and his crew served wonderful food with great presentations. A diet post cruise is almost mandatory. The wait staff in all of the dining venues were excellent. Dining room servers Jay-An and Sasha are in a class of their own, along with Alysa and Jefferina in the Skybar. We really enjoyed the Vodka tasting event and learned much more about this culture. The food was exceptional, the wine selection, was just OK, and limited since this was all Russian wine. The excursions, and the guides were excellent especially in Moscow, and St Petersburg. The Folk music concert was exceptional, and extremely enjoyable The Metro tour in Moscow was amazing Kizhi the buildings in were beautiful. Mandrogy, The Russian Banya was an unexpected treat. Also enjoyed cruising along the Volga and other rivers, seeing the surrounding countryside We added a 3 night extension in Helsinki and we really enjoyed Helsinki very much, easy to get around. This is our second Viking cruise. Loved 'Waterways of the Tsars' cruise. We loved the entire cruise, and all the tours. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and friendly. Viking also had three tour guides who traveled with us for the entire duration of the cruise. Andrei,Valeria and Dmitri are excellent tour guides. Their presentations on Russian history were excellent. The cabin was spacious and very clean. Would have loved if there was a walking track on the sun deck like in the long ships in Europe. We were very impressed with Moscow. Loved all the towns (Uglich, Yaroslavl, Kuzino, Kizhi, Mandrogy) we visited on our way to St. Petersburg. Liked how we sailed on canal, river, lakes and finally river again to get to St. Petersburg. St. Petersburg is beautiful and also has so much history. Loved Swan Lake ballet. Food was excellent, waiters were wonderful and courteous. Got to taste Russian specialties. Maitre D was very nice and welcoming. I preferred to sit in the same area of the restaurant most of the time and so got to know our waitress Helga. She is so pleasant and accommodating. The pelmini cooking demonstration was funny! Our tour director Sasha was wonderful and has a good sense of humor. Daniel- the ship's manager was also wonderful and very funny. All in all it was a wonderful trip. Looking forward to more trips with Viking. Read Less

Spent an afternoon with a Russian family in a rural area. Very nice people. Vodka definitely flowed freely! The tours of the Kremlin and Red Square was excellent. We rode the Metro which was amazing in itself with the artwork in the stations. Did not expect to cross such large lakes as we thought it was a river cruise. No problem, but the lakes were huge. St Petersburg was wonderful. Catherine's Palace, St. Petersburg city tour,, the Hermitage and last but not least Peterhof Palace.. The magnificent art works was unbelievable. My wife and I had never been to Russia and we thought this cruise would give us a cross section of Russia, which it did. Moscow was a large city with a different subway. Red Square was bigger than expected. The river cruise through the country side let us experience some everyday people and local sights. We met some interesting Americans on board and enjoyed their company and the small ship with less than 200 on board. The food and service was great, we were exposed to some local style food with lots of vodka. In the evenings we had a very good piano player and singer. There were Russian talks that explained about Russian history and culture. The different cities that we visited along the rivers, canals and lakes gave us a view of a typical Russian small village and some of the types of homes that we visited. The cruise was chosen for its itinerary, and for the Viking good reputation. We were on a river cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg, with stops at small towns along the way. Both embarkation and disembarkation were organized and went very smoothly. Their organization and staff are excellent. The ship was a Russian ship, but had been redone recently by Viking. It was much nicer than the other river boats we crossed at a few ports. Our cabin had a balcony and patio door, and had great storage facilities and clean bathroom. The bed was very comfortable. All the meals on the ship were well prepared, excellent quality, and delicious. The dinner menu had a good variety of choices to please any taste. The Breakfast bar was great with a huge selection of foods for any taste. They offered a number of classes on the Russian language and on Russian history, which were very well presented by the knowledgeable guide staff. We also had an onboard musical presentation, were taken to a concert of Russian instruments, and to another Cossack musical review. We also were taken to a beautiful theater in St. Petersburg for a performance of Swan Lake. The service they provided was top grade. Our room was faultlessly maintained, the onboard staff were all charming and helpful, and their tour guides were excellent. The local guides they used were also wonderful. I felt that their choice of ports and shore excursions along the long waterway between Moscow and St. Pete were excellent. We had a home hosted visit and sampled local fare, visited a school and were entertained by students in costume who sang a folk song, visited an artists colony that had many interesting things, and an island with a fantastic wooden church that was build with no nails. The timing of our visits to popular destinations such at the Peterhof was perfect - we beat the crowds, and were given expert advice on how to avoid pickpockets. We did not travel with children. We would go on another cruise with Viking in an instant. To another destination - not that we didn't totally enjoy the Russian cruise, but because we want to experience other parts of the world. We chose this cruise because of the price and our interest. It was our first river cruise, and I can't say enough about Viking and how we were treated! From our pick up at the airport to our return to the airport was top notch. We have mostly traveled on our own because we thought we wanted the independence. No more. We enjoyed being pampered and scheduled. My husband likened it to being at an adult summer camp!! We loved having our daily schedule delivered to our room along with the informative sessions about what we were to see the following day. We also enjoyed all the educational activities on board along with the interesting people we met-staff and other guests. My husband is a picky eater but thoroughly enjoyed the meals. On other vacations we get tired of deciding where to eat for all our meals and whether we needed reservations. It was a joy to get back to the ship after a full day of sightseeing with a little time to refresh and maybe take a quick nap before being waited on hand and foot at dinner. We are already planning our next Viking cruise. Read Less

We had taken 4 Viking River cruises previously, but we had never been to Russia. We thoroughly enjoyed visiting Russia, and learning about the history of that country. We especially enjoyed the concerts and dance performances, and the on-board seminars about the history of the country and the present life in Russia. We also enjoyed the on-board entertainment very much, especially the opera singers from the Marinsky Theater. As always, the food selection at the buffets was very extensive, and complemented the menu listings. The food was well prepared and we were happy to see some Russian foods listed on the menu, and also available on the breakfast and lunch buffets. We enjoyed all of the included and optional excursions that we took. We were really enthralled with the performance of "Swan Lake" at the Hermitage. That is a show that is not to be missed. We were happy to see that in addition to the walking tours of cities, a "Panoramic" bus tour was also available, for those of us who need a more leisurely sightseeing adventure. Read Less

I wanted to see more, though, so I chose a Viking River Cruise and traveled from Moscow to St. Petersburg and everywhere in-between. This was a truly fantastic trip -- very educational, informative, and beautiful in every way. The food onboard was terrific, and the whole experience gave me a lasting memory of this beautiful country. The room was comfortable, the beds small but comfortable, and plenty of storage. What I liked the best were the excursions. The ones provided as part of the cruise were top rate and provided much more education and information than I expected, with a nice mix of music, dance, art, and history. The extra excursions I added were exceptional as well. A hightlight of the trip was the Faberge museum, with the thousands of exquisite gems and, of course, the faberge eggs. I thoroughly enjoyed this cruise, finding Russia fascinating. The ship and cabins were, as usual, excellent, and the on-board Vodka tasting is definitely not to be missed. You learn more than you ever knew there was to know about vodka, and you don't get drunk. (They show you how to avoid it. :-) ) (Really!) The excursions included all the big sights - giant palaces and museums - but I really enjoyed that several excursions got you out more into the country, meeting people who live there, in their schools and their homes. It would be for that very reason, meeting some of the people, that I wouldn't do this specific cruise again, myself. Once, yes, wonderful. Other Viking cruises - I'm planning on it. Here, you do see Catherine the Great's palace, the Hermitage, Red square, the Kremlin, ancient churches - those are all magnificent things with no equal elsewhere. (I would call the Hermitage **too** big, myself, but that's me.) (And Catherine's Palace really demonstrates why there was a revolution.) Similarly grand places elsewhere - Rome, Paris, Venice, Austria, China, etc.) I would revisit and have revisited, but a return to Russia is, for me, unlikely. The issue for me is that the Russian people are clearly so very unhappy. They hope to get out of their situation - impoverished, fearful - or at least have their children get out, but that hope is so slim that they are deeply depressed. You can tell that the ones who don't show this overtly are not showing it out of dire fear of the authorities. I thank Viking very, very much for being willing to show us that side of the country. It was a unique experience that was absolutely worth the trip. Read Less

Many choices and staff were very helpful in explaining what all the dishes were. Excellent shore tours. Far more options than you can fit in. Days were filled with interesting and educational experiences. Plus a number of evening experiences such as ballet in Catherine's theater, traditional Russian instrument concert, male choruses, etc. Viking was exceedingly well organized, from meeting our flight into Moscow, to getting people on and off the boat and onto the correct buses for the various tours. My wife and I both thoroughly enjoyed this cruise, this vessel, and Russia. We made changes to our Viking-supplied air and had no trouble. (Another review takes great pains to spell out their horrible upgrade process but that's on Aeroflot, not Viking.) We arrived Moscow a couple days early in order to explore on our own. All went well. The cab ride to the port was without drama except for not understanding the driver when he was asking for the name of our ship. The port was LOADED with river cruise ships. I gave him the name when it seemed appropriate and he got happy. Embarkation could not have been easier or quicker: a trailer contained a scanner for our luggage and a security person gave us a look. Done. I think we booked the least expensive cabin class. It wasn't "short" in any way, just typical compared to other cabins we've had on other ships. Bed was comfortable. Electric outlets were plentiful enough. The shower was always hot. The toilet always worked. Your cabin may be more important on this kind of vessel than on ocean cruise ships as the vessel is small. This was our first river cruise. Public areas are limited and do duty for different purposes. You may hole up in your cabin more than on a larger vessel. We always found a good spot out and about. Dining was beyond excellent. Seriously. Food and service were exceptional. Simple lunches could be had in a limited buffet line including salad or sandwich or fruit. Restaurant fare was wonderful every time. On board entertainment and activities were limited as the vessel is small. There was no music review or magic show but that was just fine. Lectures by tour guides on Russian history were interesting. Language lessons by hotel manager were informative. A vodka tasting was entertaining. At ports of call, including Moscow and Saint Petersburg, there were concerts, a folk music and dance review, and a ballet. Viking's excursion descriptions are accurate. Our cabin maid was sweet, discrete, and perfect. She gave US a parting gift. Ports were good and "built-in" tour guides were nice to have all the way on the trip. Besides the obvious allure of Moscow and Saint Petersburg, we thought Kizhi was particularly special. As for our arrival, we stayed a couple days in Saint Petersburg after the cruise to continue some personal exploration. The hotel, restaurants, subway, sites, and cab ride to the airport all worked out fine. Viking and Russia gave us a trip of a lifetime. Read Less

We choose this river cruise as a 40th wedding present for ourselves, and anticipated it with excitement for months. We did not know what to expect, coming from the Midwest USA, and traveling to Russia, but it would be impossible for us to leave the experience more pleased! Travel from Chicago to Moscow was grueling, but we expected that. What we did not expect, to this level, was the exceptional attention to detail when we arrived at Moscow airport, and for the next 13 days. EVERYTHING, (yes, everything) was designed to give the traveler every opportunity for the best experience ever. From the handling of our luggage, our boarding experience, the large and wonderfully appointed cabin, the excellent food (every meal!!!), to attentive housekeeping, and wait staff, both kitchen and the lounges, were magnificent. A sidebar about our luggage: one piece was lost by British Airlines, arriving to our room 48 hours later. The Helgi front desk pestered the airport/airlines several times each day, nagging, I think, like a grandmother whose child lost her doll, to make sure that it was found and delivered before we left Moscow. In the meantime, we received toiletries, robes and clothes, and free 3 hour laundry service. I believe that it is through adversity that the excellent prevail, and the Helgi crew did just that. Everyone had a smattering of the English language, with most speaking better than me. Absolutely no communication issues. The extra, unexpected events, like champagne in the hall to meet the captain and our new, temporary neighbors, to the daily briefings, cocktail hours was amazing. The exceptional service of Frank, the hotel/ship manager, Roland, the maître d'hôtel, Natred, our exceptional waitress whom we would have adopted in a heartbeat, to my new Siberian best friend Demetri, to Alvin, Jay, Tin, the excellent musicians, and others of whom I have forgotten their names but not their service, I tip my fedora. The vetting process of the Viking HR to find and retain such incredible staff (read: Family) must be outstanding, as they have employed the best of the best. While accommodations are important, it is the people who make the trip, and these folk certainly did this for us. We have traveled rather extensively over our many years, but this trip and experience climbs to the top of the list. Thank you, thank you!! Read Less

We cruised from Moscow to St Petersburg on Viking Truvor. We had a Verandah A stateroom. Room was very nice, although quite small....which is to be expected on a river cruise. There was adequate storage for all our clothes and other belongings and the room was always spic and span clean. Service onboard was superb....from our stewardess to the waiters in the dining room to the staff in the lounge to the tour escorts to management....all were totally competent, knowledgeable, and attentive. If you're considering a Russia river cruise you need to understand that between Moscow and St Petersburg there's a lot of distance and a lot of nothing! You will be cruising for many hours and spending a short time (usually 2-3 hours) in several different ports....that's just the nature of the geography. This didn't really concern us, though, for two reasons: 1) our main goal was to see Moscow and St Petersburg; 2) the ship is comfortable and the crew was great so cruising time was very pleasant. We took several optional tours and enjoyed them all....especially enjoyed seeing the Faberge Museum and "behind the scenes" at the Hermitage in St Petersburg and the Kremlin Armory in Moscow. The folk music concert in Moscow was great. The young couple who sang and played piano in the bar were excellent. We took this cruise to see Russia and meet some of the locals. Moscow and St. Peterburgs tours were more then we expected. We had plenty of time to explore the Red Square and the Kremlin tour was excellent. Our contact with the locals was always positive and we received several helpful hints which made it easy to get around on our own. The cruise from Moscow to St Petersburg took us to very interesting small cities and towns. The sites were amazing and so is the history of Russia. The food on the trip was excellent and we had a chance every night to try a local entree. Service was very good and the Crew was very friendly. Finally, we had a chance to learn how to taste and rate Volka....great night and no hangover. We will travel with Viking again and recommend this cruise. This was our third Viking cruise and all have been great. Read Less
