We chose this cruise because of the itinerary. All of the cities were places of interest to us and we had not visited them before. We took advantage of the pre cruise add on. Our hotel, Le Germaine, in Montreal had just re-opened after an update. The update is quite modern, think chairs hanging on chain from the ceiling. The hotel is in an ideal location for walking to downtown. The bed was comfortable, shower large and wonderful, and the staff could not have been any better. The pre cruise itinerary enabled us to tour not only Montreal but also Ottawa. Oceania had quick embarkation and fast delivery of our luggage. The Riviera cabin with a veranda was perfect for us. The furnishings were standard but the linens and towels were pristine and new. Our cabin attendants, Suresh and Wilmer, kept our room cleaned and the refrigerator stocked at times when we were out, so we never knew they were even around. Our short conversations with Wilmer were pleasant and his smile and friendliness made him a standout in our mind. This was a very casual cruise with no formal night. Most of the female cruisers dressed in slacks and nice tops for dinners. A very few wore a dress. Men don't need to pack even a sports jacket. Laundry use of washers and dryers was free and detergent was supplied. Had I known, I would have packed less. Dining at the specialty restaurants was excellent, as was the service. We especially loved the Red Ginger and were lucky to get 2 nights there. The watermelon and crispy duck salad and the Sea Bass entree were outstanding. Check with restaurant reservations to see if there is room to add extra to your 4. Thanks to Oceania for including the specialty restaurants without an uncharge. Loved lunching at the Waves Grill. A main Dining Room tip: orders at shared tables will not be taken until the table is full. Entertainment was mostly very good. There was one magician that we didn't like due to the shrill yelling kind of delivery he had. He might have been a great magician but his delivery made the magic go away. One comedian was great the first night but a following night had too many "fart" jokes to be funny. Yes, our crowd was old-er but come on. Boutique options were limited. I was interested in the perfumes etc. at one shop. I observed that the clerk was quite friendly with the 2 customers in front of me. However, when I stepped up and asked questions, I felt that I was treated almost rudely by said clerk and not a valued customer. Perhaps I didn't have the look of $$ ? We loved all the ports that we visited but think the ship excursions were over priced. EX: 2 hour walking tour at 119.00 per person! Book from a local or go on your own at most places and you will do so much better than the Oceania excursions. The only exception was the 2 day hop on in NYC. I thought that one was reasonable. On tender days the wait to get off was terribly long. One day we didn't get off until noon. There must be a more efficient way for this. Disembarking was swift, our luggage was gone from in front of our cabin the night before to claim before boarding our bus to the airport. We did so enjoy our trip but would caution that this was a ship of elderly persons. This is not a cruise for children. I would not recommend it for those who are looking for lots of shipboard fun. There were daily Mensa quizzes, trivia, bean bag toss, golf, an art scavenger hunt, and a few other activities. Perhaps this was in part to the ports and time of year. I don't know about Caribbean experiences on Oceania. Enjoy your trip! PS. Points were given for joining in on the quizzes, trivia, etc. At the end of the trip there was a point redemption for awesome items. I scored a fleece lined windbreaker, t shirt, and purse holder! Oceania is my favorite cruise line, always has excellent food and service. From the stewards to the servers in the dining areas, always outstanding service. Dijon and Suprano took good care of us, always available to our needs. Sedeep in the grill in the Terrace Cafe always greeted you with a big smile and asked you what your needs were and often brought our hot dishes to our table if time permitted since my husband is disabled. Jason also assisted him with breakfast ordered an omelette and bacon and brought it to his table. Buddha in the Toscano was outstanding. He provided extra assistance by cutting his food in bite size pieces since he had noticed he had a walker. Mark in the Polo Grill was great too. He also assisted my husband with his steak. All were very caring and helpful, always with a smile. glad I was able to cancel some excursions in New York city because of weather and schedule a panoramic one. My only problem is not enough accessible rooms/cabins. If you look around what is the average age of most your guests and they’re in walkers, wheelchairs, and have walking canes. They put a chair in the shower, it was so big that there was no room for him to step in the shower and it did not fit in the tub either. If you could at least position some hand rails in the shower and tub to hold on to while taking a shower it would make a BIG difference for your physically challenged guests. It would also help every one during rough seas. I already made a reservation for an Alaskan cruise for next year so we could get a handicapped cabin. The Regatta has ONLY 3 Handicapped rooms available in the whole ship an they are inside cabins Read Less

Weather in northeast was far too cold to enjoy the beautiful cities of Canada and New England. Embarkation looked like a greased pig rodeo with two individuals (later three) controlling the crowds. The "herder-in-charge" was too busy chatting with guests (at the head of the line) to keep the processing running smoothly, with agents waving at him frantically to get his attention to send over another person to check in. The subordinate, on the other hand, was constantly distracted by questions, problems, and other issues so that people were jumping the line to check in. When the chatty man in charge noticed the line jumpers, he verbally attacked the other who was facing the crowds. They finally added a third person to make their system work properly. Ship was beautiful. Cabin was clean and well kept. Water was NOT softened leaving the skin and scalp very dry. Dining was good, but not great as there were not too many "simple food" options for people with dietary restrictions. Food too rich. Service was exceptional. Read Less

After having been on 4 Silversea cruises, we chose the Canada and New England cruise at this time to be able to sail into NYC. It was a thrilling experience! We have sailed on the Wind, the Spirit (twice), and the Cloud. Each cruise was excellent. We loved the small-sized ship, and the crew was exceptional. The personalized service of Silversea, from the butler to the maitre d'hotel, was also superb. We were always greeted with a friendly smile and many times, greeted by name at the reception area, excursion desk and restaurants. We were disappointed with a windy day which prevented us from anchoring in Newport, but the crew and staff immediately planned activities for our unexpected day at sea. Although not a new, glitzy ship, we noticed updated decor as the ship was refurbished last year. It was understated elegance in all the public areas. We ate in all the restaurants except the grill due to weather. The food is outstanding, as we had remembered from all of our previous cruises on Silversea. The afternoon tea was a favorite time, with Trivia with the cruise director. We would have preferred the enrichment lectures be more in line with the ports we visited, giving history and landmark information. The excursions were very enjoyable. Read Less

I'm always curious to see if my assessment of a cruise ship matches the typical review of it I read here on Cruise Critic. Reviewers correct on the food, entertainment and things to do ... mostly pretty mundane. But the ship itself is in immaculate condition after a fall 2019 retrofit. And the crew was one of the sharpest and friendliest I have encountered on the high seas, except for a few letdowns in the dining room. Also love the size of the ship, easy to get around with a max of 1,400 passengers. Our New England and Canada fall colors cruise encountered some storms and we could not get in to Bar Harbor or get off the ship at Halifax. An extra wine tasting was added, and it's nice they do them, some lines don't, but HAL uses mostly cheap wines . One habit I find distasteful is their tendency during wine tastings and Lido food service to begin to shut things down too quickly. Other lines not so bad on that score. HAL loves these Microsoft classes but after a decade it's gotten old as people now focused more on cell phones than laptops. Our cabin with a small porthole was fine but several people related horror stories about plumbing problems and rude service at the front desk. HAL needs to revisit its offerings of things to do .. why not try some new, creative things instead of the same old same old you have run for decades! The food? In typical HAL fashion had some great lunches and dinners and a a couple that were flops. Soups not as good as they used to be on HAL ships. We don't even try the Pinnacle anymore because they just can't cook a steak right! The stops we made were fine ... loved Quebec City and the North End of Boston. Also enjoyed small towns Charlottetown and Sydney and their friendly people. Found the casino in Sydney and also their nice waterfront boardwalk. People complained that there is nothing at the pier at Port Canaveral. Overall glad we did the cruise and HAL is fine if you don't get thrown for a loop by a few things not to your liking. Read Less

We took this cruise because it is the only cruise line that goes on the Erie Canal. Cabin -- we were in the largest option -- was small,but not a problem because we knew it would be. Essentially no useful directions to embarkation point in Montreal, which left our cab driver searching for 40 minutes on what should have been a 15-minute ride. The cruise is pretty well for old people, again not a problem as we are old. There were under 40 passengers on a ship that will hold over 80, so we were able to spread out and do our own thing when we wanted. I think it would be a very difficult trip, in terms of feeling crowded, if the ship were full. The best thing, which is typical for most cruises we have been on, was the crew, especially the young people working the cabins and dining rooms. Very hard workers and very sweet. The captain and officers were personable and expert. The cruise director was very efficient if not warm and fuzzy. The "expert" offering lectures and commentary was great. They make a effort to keep you entertained in the evening -- beside the lectures, there were a couple musicians, movies, game night, etc. All were pretty well geared to old people. We thought the food pretty average, but the chef was very responsive to special requests. We were satisfied in terms of our objective -- seeing the amazing canal engineering across New York state. The excursions we took were fine -- a bit overpriced, but you are paying for their service. You are pretty well on your own in terms of exploring locales where you dock. I really don't see going on this line again -- it is expensive for what you get -- unless, as with the Erie Canal, there is no other option. Read Less

I chose this cruise because of the ports it included specifically Quebec City, Charlottetown, New York, and Bermuda. The rest I didn’t really care one way or another. Both Charlottetown and Bermuda were cancelled - not Oceania’s fault for Bermuda - weather was bad. Substituted Corner Brook,Nfld for Charlottetown- not impressed - never heard a reason. 2 other Canadian ports were cancelled due to high winds and they were tender ports. I am travelling solo and this is not the ship to do that on. Entertainment is boring - music is boring. Most passengers are very “old.” I am a senior too but most of the passengers were “old” even for me and everyone was in pairs. Some people were friendly others were not. They had a meet and greet for solo travellers - 2 of the men that showed up were cousins travelling together - both were married - so not solo. One man and one woman were travelling together - so not solo. Just because they weren’t married doesn’t mean they were alone. 3 that showed up were part of the entertainment group - and knew each other well - so not solo. I don’t mind being alone but the staff made you feel awkward sometimes because you took up a table. I guess some people don’t understand those of us that like to be alone. The problem was because the weather was cold no one was using the outside tables. Everyone seems to like Oceania’s food but I wasn’t overly impressed. One chef they had working the grill was not very pleasant - and lucky me - he was the one I always got to take my order. They had too many waiters sometimes - clearing plates before you were finished with them. The hours their restaurants serve is too restricted. Breakfast ends too early - if you don’t eat by 10 am you have to eat at lunch. And, if you are late for lunch because you went ashore your only option was the outside grill if it was before 4 pm. They had 2 nights with a red ginger theme - and I ate in my room the second night because I didn’t like anything on the menu. Never used my reservations for the specialty restaurants- couldn’t imagine sitting there by myself. They often had snacks in other areas but they were all carbs - pastries, cakes. I have read other reviews about the passengers on the world cruise being cliquey- and I agree. They have games they play just for them. Cabin bed and linens are great. The steward looking after my room was great - very efficient. But after a few days I started to smell a “sewer like” smell on my floor. ?? Not sure what that was all about. Very limited shopping available. Sell on-board cruises like crazy. Most other people seemed to like Oceania- so maybe I am the odd one. Read Less

This was 3rd Oceania Cruise, second on this ship. The selections in the Main Dining Room were very good on our previous Oceania Cruises so we expected a similar experience on this cruise. This was not to be. The food was good generally, the buffet and specialty restaurants were excellent but getting additional reservations in the specialty restaurants beyond the Two which came with our cabin category was impossible except for very late seatings. The Main dining room food was generally tasty BUT the choices on the menu were very limited with prime rib, lobster or other expensive cuts very seldom being seen on the menu. The Oceania Accountants have seemed to taken the position that if you want the good food you better buy the expensive cabins so you get more seatings in the specialty restaurants. Never let the bean counters run the menu! The rest of the cruise was fine except the weather caused us to miss three of the ports which was not the fault of Oceania. Read Less

This was my third Holland America cruise. My two prior experiences were very good. Food in the main dining room in the past was good to excellent. On my past trips there was sufficient entertainment and on board activities. Not so on this cruise. Food in the main dining room was okay to poor. On the gala evening, the lobster in the surf and turf was old and cooked to death. So too was the filet which was tasteless. I opted for the optional Rudi's Sel de Mer dinner and was well pleased. Excellent food, excellent service. As to the entertainment, the dance numbers in the variety show entertainment were pretty good, but the vocal numbers were aimed at a 12 year old audience and you had to endure them to see the dancers. There was a very good jazz band playing in the ocean lounge, which unfortunately was not the best venue for engaging with the music. A violinist and pianist were the bids for classical type entertainment but the pianist was not very talented. The staff was, as always on HA, excellent. That is, my cabin stewards, the restaurant servers and wine stewards all were exemplary. My suite was always clean and well provisioned. Not so the customer no service staff in the atrium. When they did not know the answer to a questions, they sent me away instead of trying to find the answer for me. Read Less

There were 2 couples sailing on this cruise (fifth we have done together), we chose it for the itinerary. The embarkation was flawless. We arrived at the cruise terminal and we finished all the paperwork and were boarding the ship by noon, half hour or so. The ship is older but quite lovely and well maintained. We were in Vista suite 7050 and our friends were next door. The room steward opened the balcony door between so we could share visits and happy hours etc. our room steward was phenomenal. He left ice in the bucket twice a day as well as fruit in the basket on our coffee table. We always bring a small extension cord as there are never enough outlets. We enjoyed the breakfasts in the Lido Cafe. Very wide selection of foods and if you ordered cook to order eggs,pancakes,waffles,omelets they were good. The cooks serve you mostly so as to decrease the cross contamination, which we appreciate. We never took any of HAL excursions due to cost. Over time we have found that going on private tours is much nicer and generally not a huge cost difference. We are then able to stop and take pix as often as we choose. We had the most difficulty with dinner service. We were at the second seating at 730 pm which we liked, however the shows were at 9 pm and even though we told our waiters we wanted to be out in time we never got to a show on time. The shows are only 40-45 mins long so that’s a big deal. The dinner food was ok not great. My husband who is celiac has always been visited by the maitre d on our previous cruises to choose dinner options for next evening. On this cruise we were visited a couple of times and most of the time he was on his own to choose. They did have gf next to a couple of items but we knew from previous experience that some of the other choices could be changed slightly to accommodate. No one was there consistently to help with this. We did enjoy a few of the entertainment acts such as The BBC orchestra,PJ Walsh a comedian and Mike Robinson a ventriloquist comedian who was very good. All in all we were happy with the cruise and the ports and the ship. There were a couple of areas where improvements could be made. Disembarkation was also a breeze. We were able to choose a time and we were off right on time to get our luggage and continue our trip in Boston. Read Less

We were a little nervous booking this particular cruise due to the ship going into dry dock immediately after. We figured the weather would be iffy due to the time of year (11/2-11/18) and did have a few chilly, rainy days. We missed only 1 port, Bar Harbor, due to tender issues. For the most part, the ship was in good repair and other than some slightly worn upholstery it was well kept and all areas very clean. Our stateroom, 8000, is considered a suite and was lovely and included a 3 cushion full sized sofa, 2 club chairs and a glass table in addition to a very comfy bed. There was plenty of storage and the bathroom must be larger than other levels as it was plenty big. Oh, and the live orchid in the room was a lovely touch. A slight disappointment was the main dining room with their menu of sameness. Oh, there’d be a special few items thrown in daily but it wasn’t exceptional. What WAS fabulous was The Polo Grill and the grilled lobster tails and grilled shrimp every evening in the buffet. We found the Italian restaurant, Toscana, to be just okay. Husband returned one entree, a veal dish. I tasted it and agreed it wasn’t good either in texture or taste. I will say staff immediately swooped in and expedited his new order. The buffet is handled very well. No cruiser touches the food. You indicate what you want and staff prepare your plate THEN, more often than not, another staff member steps in and carries your plate to your table. There’s no self serve of food or drink. Another true highlight is tea time which is a lovely event served with a background of a string quartet. The house band was good with one member being exceptional. Staff was fabulous. The cruise director, Shawn Carter, was one of the more engaging CD’s we’ve met. All service staff were quick with their greetings and generous in their thank you’s. The only flaw we encountered was a rather disengaged front desk staff but that blip was more than made up by the butler who couldn’t do enough for us. He was so well trained and seemed sincerely vested in our enjoyment. I wasn’t expecting much in the way of entertainment but was surprised—pleasantly. In addition to several enrichment talks (on the ports of call, on the history of where we were traveling, to an marine biologist giving talks on various sea life) the evening show included a comedian, a magician, several singers, a fabulous guitarist, a pianist. True, there’s no production numbers like you find on larger ships but the shows are more like lounge acts. Very intimate and entertaining. There was the usual bingo, trivia, karaoke, bracket making. WiFi was usually good—not speedy but adequate save one day the satellite wasn’t functioning well as some streamed newscasts on the TV were not working either. So would I sail Oceania again? Yes!!! I enjoyed the quietness of the ship, the lack of rowdy games, loud music or intrusive photographer. Fellow passengers were a mature, well traveled group which made for interesting conversation. Advertised as Fall Splendour with varied itinerary along the St Lawrence and Eastern seaboard of the USA from Montreal to New York. Embarkation and disembarkation process efficient except that the taxi pick up point in New York had been closed by the police as 650 people tried to get off the ship . Veranda cabin deck 6 adequate but dated . shower very small ,no bath and intermittent hot water . Italian speciality restaurant overseen by rude arrogant maitre 'd and indifferent waiting staff . Grill restaurant was excellent by comparison. Terrace Cafe overcrowded and chaotic serving area for mediocre repetitive menus. Waiting staff pushing alcohol sales at every opportunity . Afternoon tea a disorganised melee. Entertainment very poor . Nightly shows amateurish at best . Had two extra days at sea due to "weather conditions" . Sydney I can accept but Bar Habor seemed to be aborted to make up lost time as this is a sheltered port.There was no attempt to add or compensate for the loss of these two ports in either entertainment terms or money . The shore excursions were the most expensive I have come across when paid for on board .It was possible to use local guides at half the cost . The cabin stewardess was the only positive . The ship was going for a refurbishment after this cruise ,and it needed it . The overall impression was of complete disdain for passengers comfort by a Captain clearly wanting to get to refitting dock as soon as possible . I would not travel with Oceanic again . We boarded the Viking Sea at Montreal on a Friday morning and oh mon dieu, such first impressions. Lined up at the quay, with its prow facing the old port, the ship projected a sleek profile, befitting a vessel built for only 930 passengers. The sense of elegance and style was reinforced in a stroll around the public spaces: clean, straight-lined Nordic design and decor with windows shooting light on the soft blue hues of the carpeting and the grains in the flooring. Nothing dark, red or tufted. Lunch in the World Cafe on deck 7 and another impression. What was that across the river? It was an intriguing cluster of gigantic concrete blocks, that looked like they had been layered, squeezed together and discarded by a giant who had been playing with his Legos. In fact, it turned out to be the creation of an architectural student who had indeed used Lego pieces to work out his groundbreaking concept for a complex of 150-odd apartments. It was to be called Habitat 67 and it was built for Expo '67. His project was in keeping with the brutalist style of architecture that apparently did not catch on, yet there it was piled 12 stories high, commanding the embankment. Montreal clearly had a lot to offer. The next day's guided, complimentary tour proved the point: insights into the influences of French, English and Scottish cultures, cobbled streets, lined with boutiques and flower boxes at every corner, and, most rewarding, the embracing spirituality of the Basilica of Notre Dame. We took a short bus ride to Mont Real and there we took in the fall colors of the maples.. Sunday morning and another arresting view: the skyline of Quebec City, looking down on the harbor. The included tour was switched from a bus excursion to a walk-around because this was the day for a marathon, which in itself was an attraction. They ran in leggings with packs on their backs over aged, weathered streets that wound from the lower town to the upper and then on to goodness knows where. It was a route our guide eschewed as she led us to the funicular, which hauled us from the Petit Quartier Champlain to the iconic Hotel Frontenac above. Farther upriver we cruised and into a fjord. Now we are in Saguenay, with little between it and the Arctic. This time our shore excursion took in a stirring community show with schoolchildren and their elders celebrating the history of the city and the resilience of its people in song and dance. From Saguenay to Gaspé, where the tour to the Forillon National Park was a disappointment. It was late in the season, nippy, and the park was closed. But we did see more fall colors. Halifax and another complimentary bus tour, which included a stop at the cemetery where victims of the Titanic disaster were buried and, even more poignantly, victims of the Halifax Explosion. On Dec. 6, 1917 two ships, one laden with explosives, collided in the harbor and at 9:04 in the morning there was an explosion that killed 2,000 and injured 9,000 in a blink. Step off the bus, visit the maritime museum and your heart will be broken. In Boston another included excursion of the historic sites but it was shivering cold when we got off the bus and waited for the shuttle. We had been to Boston before. Why hadn't we brought gloves? The next morning we sailed into New York, the Explorers' Lounge at the bow being the place to be. There a cruise ambassador served up a practiced commentary laden with anecdotes. Apparently, Alistair Cooke, the British-American journalist who hosted PBS' Masterpiece Theatre in the 1970s and 1980s, once said that he knew all would be well in the world, even after the devastation of World War II, when he sailed aboard the Queen Mary into New York Harbor in 1946. We were about to see the 2018 version of what he meant and we did. After each excursion we were always glad to return to the ship. After all, that's where the food was: the buffet in the World Cafe, the many fine choices in the restaurant, the Italian dishes in Manfredi's or the Asian cuisine in the Chef's Table. Manfredi's and the Chef's Table required reservations, but the main restaurant did not. It was open seating and there were no formal sittings timed in conjunction with the evening shows. We could enjoy our meal and casual and sometimes spirited conversations with fellow travelers. "We voted for Brexit," one woman confided, her husband nodding in agreement. "My daughter called the next day and asked how we voted, but when I told her she said, 'Oh, mother. How could you'?" We missed the ventriloquist, though we heard he was excellent; we attended nearly all the lectures on the history of the ports, plus a screening of the Metropolitan Opera's production of "Aida." On the Viking Sea you'll find books throughout the ship. There's a fine library in the Explorers' Lounge, the very best space on the ship. What you won't find anywhere is a casino, a climbing wall or a water slide or anyone wandering about looking for such. The cruise itself was ok. The ship is beautiful inside with tasteful decorating and furniture. The weather was beautiful considering all the hurricanes the previous weeks. The food in the general dining area, called the ‘world cafe’ was very good for breakfast ,lunch and dinner. There were two specialty restaurants: the chefs table and the Italian restaurant. The chefs table I thought was decent, but we heard lots of comments on both sides of the table. We had two nights booked for the chefs table, but chose to eat there only one time. The Italian restaurant was definitely lacking. I received a nine oz. steak that was basically marbled fat. When they asked me why I didn’t eat the steak I showed them how it was marbled with fat. We ended up that night again at the world cafe. The entertainers were very good, but entertainment overall was lacking. This was a circle the Caribbean cruise with short tours included. Most of the tours were just not very good. On one tour the bus driver backed into the bus behind us causing all passengers to be moved to other busses. The worst decision we made, only day two on the ship, was to pre-book for a future cruise from Bergen to Stockholm. The pre-booking employee was very nice, but mislead us regarding the cancellation policy. She assured my wife and I that the deposit was fully refundable up to 120 days prior to the cruise, including insurance. She said this at least three times. We thought this was the same as Princess which we’ve sailed with many times. Never a problem. A week after we got home we decided to cancel as it conflicted with other family plans. We then found out that they would not refund the insurance. We were shocked that we had been lied to. A supervisor referred us to page 2 where the small print cancellation policy is. Keep in mind you never get this from the pre-cruise employee until they charge your card and then generate the paperwork. We were told there is no path to resolution. It’s their policy. They keep our $1400 and basically told us too bad. As a warning to all reading our story be very careful when booking with this company and don’t believe everything they say. This was our third Viking Ocean cruise and the high standards of the first two were evident on this cruise too! I would rate Viking excellent in all areas--crew, ship design/decor, cabin size/layout, etc. The food was wonderful, and there are several dining areas. We preferred the World Cafe, a buffet style restaurant for most of our meals. They have various food stations where you can custom order dishes. The wait staff were prompt, courteous, and very attentive. There is a yummy gelato station there and they make their own pizza in one area too. We ate in the other dining areas and they were fine, just not my favorites. We mostly did the free included tour in each port and most were very good. A lot depends on the tour guide and some are better than others. In NY City, we did the optional tour of the 9/11 Museum and it was excellent. Entertainment is good and attendance is high. The port talks and other talks were good too--many of these are available on your cabin TV. The cabin stewards are terrific---very friendly and willing to help in any way. They are very prompt in the daily cleaning of the rooms. We splurged a bit and moved up from the DV cabins to the PV2 for the extra space, and we were very happy with that decision. We have 2 more cruises booked and I can't even imagine cruising on any other line! Read Less

Silversea is marketed as a pampering and luxury cruise line. However, my experience was not as luxurious as anticipated. A friend warned me that the service/food level had dipped in the last couple of years and we booked nonetheless. The cuisine was mediocre in most restaurants. Atlantide and La Dame were fine as far as the level of cuisine offered, and we loved our meals there, however we found the offerings in the rest of the ship to be less than...not what we expected. Our cabin attendant was very sweet and accommodating. The luggage delivery was late, and not his fault, but we boarded the ship at 2 and didn’t receive our luggage until after 6...beyond annoying. Also, we are used to the service level of Azamara where any food or drink wish was taken care of immediately. We didn’t get a bottle of Ketel One for our room for 2 days. And the level of in room cuisine was also mediocre and almost always cold. The only ports worthwhile were Montreal, Quebec City, Bar Harbor and Boston. The others were boring and lackluster. Silversea should consider paying the higher cost of a longer port stay in the other ports allowing for more time for exploration. Saguenay, Sydney and Baie Comeau didn’t have much to offer, unless you paid for an excursion. I will say the service in the restaurants was excellent. The staff is well trained and very accommodating, friendly. It’s just what they’re serving that we found challenging. We wouldn’t book another cruise on Silversea. Read Less

Wanted to cruise the changing of the leaves in Canada and New England. The ship is wonderful the crew is also overboard at helping. Our butler Oscar and out maid Evelyn were just superb. The weather was not the best, but such is life. The only downside to the entire trip was the tenders. The tenders on two occasions caused tours to be cut short, both times the scheduled departure from the ship was delayed almost an hour. The most annoying being Newport, we were scheduled to tour the Vanderbuilt mansion, but had to cut it short to get back for the final tender. Other than the tenders, every other aspect of the ship, crews and food was excellent. I will be sure to check any ports in the future that require tenders, especially if they are as expensive as the Vandebuilt one. If there is a tender I definitely will not pay to get off the ship. The plan to see three US states and leave from and return to Boston (Globus from Boston to Montreal) with an opportunity for Fall foliage and a 7-day three province cruise on the ms Veedam made it an exceptional offering. The support of the Excursion people was excellent even when that support was helping with another providers excursion, The entertainers were very talented although very few. The food was good (cruise ship average), the cabin was small but acceptable, and the room steward was exceptional. The Dining Room was very slow. The help in the Lido Market were English challenged and occasionally seemed rude, but it may have been inability to understand. The issues arose when anything unusual occurred. A delay on leaving one port put us late into the next which required many of the tours to be adjusted, and the staff became abrupt to the point of rudeness when questions were asked. But, things were going to get worse because we were reentering the US the next morning requiring us to pass through customs. We received two OR three written communications (the variance occurred even when two cabins were doing identical activities the following day). Announcements were frequent throughout, but basically they said follow your final written communications precisely. Our final written communications were WRONG. No one cared about the instructions we were trying to follow. Each rude staff member we encountered was herding us like recalcitrant sheep as per their orders. When this process concluded we (about 40 of us at the time) found ourselves in the Showroom where NO ANNOUNCEMENTS COULD BE HEARD and NO MEMBER OF STAFF OR CREW WAS PRESENT. As things became slowly and painfully corrected I was left to wonder, "HOW HORRIBLE WOULD IT HAVE BEEN IN A REAL EMERGENCY?" Read Less

First cruise and probably the last. The list of problems on this ship are too numerous to elaborate. Briefly - no hot water some days, no self serve coffee/tea available - only available with room service after 6:00 pm, inadequate seating spaces for breakfast and lunch during inclement weather, options for meals are severely limited, old and outdated stateroom, poorly coordinated and overpriced excursions, movie room had seating for about 8 people. At embarkation they lost 2 of our 3 pieces of luggage so that we had to track them down. Three full days at sea with nothing to do - what a waste of time and money. TV program listings on the daily activity sheet were for the day before. They cleaned the brass handrails on the stairs with Brasso and failed to wipe it down thoroughly. Got black on our hands when we used them. Service providers were overly friendly but many did not understand English. One redeeming quality was the workout room was well equipped. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we wanted to visit places in Canada that were on the itinerary. Also, the short flight from Boston to Montreal was attractive. We have traveled with Viking before. We have gone on two river cruises and one other ocean cruise. The Viking experience is wonderful, ship is beautiful, staff is exceptional from the dining staff, cabin attendants, cruise director, etc. The only complaint I would have is that a few of the excursions were a disappointment. Also, they need to give the opportunity to review EVERY excursion. We only were given that opportunity for one of the excursions, One of the tours started out with a large group and half way through more than half of the group left the tour and went out on their own. This was one of the extra (not included) tours, so of course after paying for it we were not happy. We have signed up for two more Viking cruises because overall we are happy with Viking and hope the excursion experience will be better. Read Less

My first cruise 7 years ago was on Marco Polo a small cruise ship in the Cruise and Maritme fleet. With nothing to compare it to but other holidays in European resorts I thought it compared very favourably. Since then I have cruised with P&O three times , NCL , and Royal Caribbean, and again with Cruise and Maritime. However the cruise I am on at the moment with Crystal on the liner Symphony beats them all hands down . The reason I have titled my review as ‘Don’t cruise on this ship’, is because it has well and truly spoiled me , and I don’t think I would be able to cruise on another liner without feeling that that they had fallen short compared to Crystal. Unfortunately I might be a while saving up for my next Crystal cruise as it works out at about double the price of the ones I have named above, but goodness is it worth it! From the moment I boarded I was treated like a treasured guest. I think the main reason is that the ship never appeared crowded , the staff had time to be attentive to the guests. In order to make my point a little more clearly I will try to give examples. On previous cruise liners - long queues for the bar during the day on the all inclusive deals,wine waiters in the restaurant only coming to the table once during the meal as they all appeared rushed off their feet. Crystal- no queues anywhere, waiter service round the pool, public areas and in the dining rooms ,constantly replenishing glasses, stopping to chat with guests. On previous cruise liners - sea days when the weather is good , don’t bother trying to get a sun bed or seat of any kind after 10 am as they are either reserved with book, towels or bodies! On sea days when the weather is bad , everywhere noisy and crowded with public areas looking like my mum’s nursing home , or Butlins , depending on which cruise line you are on. Crystal - nowhere is crowded , on the sunniest days barely half the sun beds are occupied with anything, and inside is the same , no loud piped music , no queues for anything. I don’t mean it to sound like a graveyard , it is just quiet and understated and not intrusive. On previous cruises- tips , and drinks are extra. Even on the all inclusive cruises speciality coffee and certain drinks , ice cream ,plus the mini bar in the room and certain room service menus are all extra . Crystal - All included , no staff being extra nice at the end of the holiday in the hope you will leave them an extra tip , on Crystal the staff are attentive , happy and welcoming the whole time.All speciality coffees included, with waiters on hand in public areas to dispense drinks of all sorts, and don’t get me started on the ice cream , with about 20 different flavours ( no cheap imitations) they were brilliant , and of course all included. On previous cruises- Being tendered into port whilst other ships have the cruise terminal position, queuing up for an hour before breakfast to get tender tickets so that we can get off the boat at a reasonable time . Paying extra for shuttle buses out of the port , and again having to queue up for ages in order to get a ticket that insures we get a shuttle at a reasonable time. Crystal - certainly on this cruise whenever there was a dock/cruise terminal , we got it. On the couple of occasions we were tendered in , there were no queues , no waiting , and shuttles when needed were waiting with plenty of room , and ran frequently. Food- on previous cruises tables for two have been few and far between especially on P&O. The food has been OK , but things like steak have often been tough and sometimes inedible. Self service has been good , but often the food would only be warm. On one liner our dinner companions (no table for two available) had paid a substantial amount for the drinks package and eventually having managed to get the attention of the wine waiter they were poured a glass of wine each , they didn’t see the wine waiter for the rest of the meal. On Crystal the food has been excellent , no expense spared and steaks have been so tender and cooked to perfection , as has all their food. We did try the speciality restaurants which were very good , but the main restaurant was so good that we didn’t feel the need to try anything else , also your wine glass is replenished before it ever becomes empty. The cabin we had on Crystal was a comparable size to that of other liners , but the fittings were superior . Our cabin attendant was efficient and friendly and tailored our cabin cleaning/turn down service around our movements which wasn’t the case on some of the other cruises we have been on. Of course it is very much horses for courses and if you like loud music, sing alongs , karaoke , bingo and announcements from your cruise director throughout the day , or water shoots and bumper cars , then this cruise line might be a bit quiet for you. The larger proportion of passengers are American , the rest are English , Asian and European. I think there is quite a bit to do on board with lectures , a cinema , and Dvd’s That are played through your TV . We only had 3 sea days so we were able to find plenty of quiet spots to sit and read ,so to be fair we didn’t really try out their activities, although we did play table tennis - this had its own part of the deck with a large heavy net covering the area where you played , thus preventing the ball escaping under sun loungers etc. Afternoon tea served in one of the lounges was a sight to behold and was of the same standard as the Ritz or Fortnum and Mason! We didn’t tend to watch the entertainment in the evening , as we are not really into shows , but we did catch one of the comedians one evening (John Joseph) who was hilarious. I feel that throughout the whole cruise nothing was too much trouble , the passenger and their comfort was the important aspect, not how much money could be generated from them. I think it is well worth the extra money and have started saving my pennies already! Read Less

Delightful - best cruise we’ve had out of 11 cruises! Chose it for the destinations and the excursions. Wanted to go through the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Welland Canal, as well as the cities involved. Ship was nice small size (200 passengers), crew was superb, food was great, and everybody was friendly. We enjoyed cruising without the hustle and bustle of large ships. We particularly enjoyed the personal attention of the crew, that they got to know you by name, and that there was no waiting in line for anything. The excursions were superb and included in the cruise price, as was the wine and beer. We enjoyed that there was no smoke-filled casino on board (and no smoking at all) and we were not bombarded by the many big ship announcements touting and hustling the many things and shops on board. It was just simple cruising in the most pleasant of circumstances. Read Less

Nice people in the best maners to have a fun and know different people. Recurring Customers who have travel more than three time. Getting every time lower service and lower attention to the guest. book to a restaurant is an nightmare. V society, in free laundry (is a lack of information and the result a disgrace for you guys) SHAME OF YOU FOR YOUR RECURRING CUSTOMERS. We chose this cruise to travel with friends who are disabled seniors ; the line advertises many handicap accessible excursions. NOT! Only one stop could accommodate a wheel chair rolling off; other stops required being carried in a wheelchair down two very steep outdoor flights of stairs that were very frightening, especially slick and wet. Also, the elevator to the upper decks was out most of the trip, so our friends could not join us in the spa, library, observation deck, etc. Disembarkation was terrible in the end because they would not help us off the ramp (apparently a union issue) and there were high thresholds to navigate. The ship decor was very dated; definitely in need of a refresh, especially to clean the carpets in public areas. The room was spacious and had good lighting. The deck chairs were not comfortable at all; not a lounge where you could lie and enjoy the sea. The TV had very limited selections and no live streaming/channels carried the World Series. Many cruisers were grumbling about this! Internet service in the cabin was pretty good, but in this day and age, for this price cruise, it's pretty insulting to have to pay for it as an add on. The toilets in a nearby cabin overflowed several times leaving the smell of urine in the hall despite the best efforts of the crew to clean up. The personal butler was the only highlight of the trip. Service was professional, friendly, and prompt. We often chose to have dinner as room service because dinner in the restaurants took a minimum of two hours, but room service was prompt. The food was good and plentiful, but pretty much as expected on a cruise, nothing outstanding. While the line advertises the cruises are all inclusive, going to the spa was a nightmare of literally being assaulted at the door by people trying to sell these flimsy orthotic inserts for shoes. I also witnessed an elderly woman with a stroke being aggressively browbeaten to sign up for Pilates, despite her insistence that her balance made it unsafe. I chose not to return to the spa after my first visit because of the high pressure sales people who destroyed the calming atmosphere one hopes to find in a spa. It was fortunate that we spent extra time in both Montreal and NYC at the beginning and end of the trip because we had good handicap accessible services and enjoyed touring. On the trip, bad weather cancelled our stops in PEI, Portland, Boston, Newport. So, essentially, we spent most of the days docked in Halifax and then rushed back to NYC. Being in port meant no casino and no shopping on the ship and there essentially were no additional activities added. To finally add insult to injury, when our ship was able to start sailing back to NYC at sea for a whole day, they drained the pool and started cleaning it with foul smelling chemicals, eliminating the only day we could have enjoyed the upper deck in good weather. Their priority , from the moment the storm hit, was clearly to get ready for the next cruise. We were a lost cause. While the line is not responsible for bad weather, to ruin the last day at sea was inexcusable. Read Less

We wanted to experience a Viking Ocean Cruise without going too far from home in Wisconsin. We sailed from Montreal up the St. Lawrence seaway and around to New York City. Awesome is the only word to describe the Cruise. The itinerary and accommodations were outstanding and the entire Viking staff were excellent without exception. Eddie and James (our room Stewards) kept our stateroom in perfect condition. If you have a chance to stop at the Explorer Bar on Deck 7, ask for the bar tender Johnny (from Bali). He’ll treat you special. We sailed during October to see the Fall Colors and celebrate my wife’s birthday. The weather was perfect and the venues we visited were as well - especially; Quebec City, Saguenay, and the Moose Parade in Gaspe’ (not to be missed, but you have to be there on the right day since it only happens once a year). Seeing Halifax, Boston, and New York in the fall were a real treat. You cannot go wrong if you want to experience your first Viking Ocean Cruise by trying the Eastern Seaboard Explorer.
