We were looking for a relaxing and fun way to start the new year. We were not disappointed! The crew was very friendly and took special care to make sure we were comfortable. The food was excellent with a lot of variety and choices of both informal dining as well as more formal restaurants. Both lunch and dinner included wine, which was consistently of high quality and delicious. A pleasant surprise was the quality of the onboard entertainment — professional-level shows that presented selections from ABBA, the 60s, and the Beatles. We had a junior suite, which was very comfortable. The ship had many seating areas for taking sun and enjoying quiet conversation. There was also a well-stocked library. Finally, the gym was quite large with plenty of equipment, free weights and workout space. The one concern was that the embarkation dock was changed from J to F at the last moment, and we were not informed. Therefore, we had to scramble to get to the other dock and were worried about missing the ship. The high point was certainly the New Year's Eve party and dance! This cruise was truly an experience to remember! Read Less

My wife and I traveled with six friends. We had a Great trip over New Year. Food was great, people were very helpful. Cruise director and assistant had great voices, this was highlight of entertainment. Cabin was fine. Shore excursions were good, really enjoyed tube cave trip in Belize. The pyramids in Chitchen Itza was the tour that I found the most informative and most impressive. Love the small ship feel and easy on ond off at ports. I take advantage of the fitness center, well equipped open and airy. Getting to and from the ship at beginning and end of trip was easy. The Restaurant Manager was very helpful to get our group seated together each night. We enjoyed the food and variety in the World Cafe and the other food Kiosks. The only issue we had was we needed more clothing hangers for our room and our steward need two days to find extra hangers. Read Less

Viking came highly recommended by friends and family, and we chose this particular cruise because of our interests in ancient civilizations. While on the cruise, we were able to visit three different Mayan ruins. The food and dining options were second to none. Our favorite days were the At Sea days. We made full use of the spa, and went through the Nordic bathing ritual on an almost daily basis. Plenty of open spaces, with board games, cards, and a puzzle station. This is most definitely not a party or a booze cruise. Which is one of the reasons why we enjoyed it so very much. Our only issues were with the descriptions of some of the excursions, as well as the timing of the excursions. More time was devoted to traveling on the excursions than actuality at the sites. During a 7 hour tour, we only had 105 minutes to explore the site, and the remaining time was spent in transit. We would do it again, we were just disappointed that we didn't have more time to explore. Read Less

My wife and I wanted a high quality, small ship, mosty inclusive cruising experience. Viking Ocean Cruises was highly rated. Very effective advertising. Decided to give them a try for an 8 day Caribbean cruise. We were not disappointed. Used Viking Air for transportation to Miami...no issues. Transfer from Airport to the ship (Viking Sun) went well. Embarkation was smooth. Cabin (a delux on deck 4) was outstanding...really liked heated floors in bathroom. Bed comfortable. Room fridge stocked with soft drinks, water and chocolate at no charge. Food was high quality but would have preferred simpler fare (hamburgers, hot dogs, barbecue) besides just at lunch. Nice that specially restaurants were free, although we didn’t dine at either one. Ships store (toiletries, snacks) had limited hours...should be longer. Fitness Center adequate...given demographics of ship not a lot of competition for equipment. Spa options excellent but early reservations a must for basics like Manicures and Pedicures. Excursion options good. We paid for one excurion (jungle ATV) and loved it...well worth the extra money. Included tours not bad either. We’re not alcohol drinkers so skipped the drink package. Cruise Director planned and executed a great New Year’s Eve party. Received a ship bridge tour from watch officer...really interesting. Crew was great...very friendly and attentive to needs. Debarkation smooth. Customs in Miami was quick and easy. We booked another cruise while on board...we’ll be repeat customers. Viking doesn’t try to nickel and dime you to death (photographers, art, etc.). Read Less

My wife and I (I'm in my 70's)wanted to see Belize and Mexico primarily to see the ancient Mayan ruins but we didn't want to see the normal tourist hot spots that you can get on television documentaries all the time so we ventured into the excursions offered by Viking Oceans. We chose Viking Oceans because it was a smaller cruise shipt and didn't carry thousands of passengers giving us a more intimate yet sociable experience. We went to Miami a few days early and made the mistake of staying in a hotel on the beach. The hotel that was booked for us was terrific but our mistake was getting a hotel on the beach. During the time we were there, the beach was really quite empty (cooler weather) but the shops and nearby restaurants were too overcrowded for us(again we like things more private and intimate). Our embarkation started with being picked up by the Viking staff and getting a short tour of Miami before heading to the ship. The tour was very interesting and went well. The ship seemed gigantic but getting to our rooms and having the bags delivered went off without a hitch. Every staff member was more than helpful making sure all our needs were met. The cabin was spacious well designed, clean, well stocked. comfortable and the veranda was a terrific place to go and just chill and drink some wine, The four dining rooms allowed plenty of room for places to eat and room service 24/7. I was never disappointed about any menu's but even though we had booked our reservations about eight months prior to our departure, their two specialty restaurants were booked for the entire trip and we never got to use it. The only thing I wish they would do is give every guest a chance to eat there at least once during the trip by simply limiting pre-booking to the larger suites to one visit on any given day and then allowing them to book more days once they were on the ship but again only allow one booking per day for any day and time they choose. This will allow everyone a chance to book any available restaurant at least once. Don't get me wrong, the food in all the restaurants was terrific but the smaller ones allow for more intimate dining which is what we would have preferred. There was never a lack of things to do or see on the ship. We walked throughout the ship familiarizing ourselves with its layout and that took us just about a full day. Social gatherings and just sitting out on the decks and relaxing always gave us opportunities to meet new people and make new friendships. The staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. Each and every one of them make you feel like you were a king or queen. They were fantastic and I don't know how they can do that day after day and still make you feel that they wanted you to give them something for them to do to make you feel comfortable and satisfied. The excursions we chose were fantastic. Well organized, knowledgeable guides and just total enjoyment. I believe on our next trip we will not go on as many excursions and probably choose to go off on our own exploratory expeditions to really get to know the country we are visiting. Disembarkation went just as smoothly as our embarkation. Not a single complaint about anything. The Cruise ship spaced us out according to our individual travel time schedule so everyone wasn't trying to get off the ship at the same time. Very well organized. This was my first cruise and I was totally impressed. This was my wife's third cruise and she said it was better than the Viking River Cruise she went on with her sister but only because I was with her this time. When we are ready to go on another cruise, Viking Cruises will be our first and only choice. As Tony the Tiger says "They're Great!" Read Less

Looked for a hoilday cruise after Christmas. Chose Viking for a luxury experience. Embarkation a breeze at POM - on the ship in 15 minutes. No lines. No problems. Boat was not at location on paperwork but was easily found Room was not ready on time due to a prolonged immigration delay for staff. Understandable. PJS was very nice. A fantastic location. Very quiet. Meals on board were very good. Enjoyed every meal except the Chefs Table. The Asian Panorama was average. The wine selections was very good however. We had Silver Beverage package. Enjoyed all the different red wines, Spouse likes her Chardonnay.. Linda Clancey the Cruise Director was fantastic. The shows were very good, Also enjoyed the enrichment lectures. Port and shore excursions met our expectations, Really enjoyed the Lamanai Mayan site and Cichan Itza, Negatives: 1, Ship motion - seas were rough from Miami to Key West and first day at sea from Key West to Belize, Maybe small size of ship made this worse? 2, Key West port - Mallory Square was closed due to damage. Couldn't tender due to wind/waves. Got into a dock after another ship left. Port was very crowded. 3. Cozumel - short time in port. Overall would highly recommend Vking Read Less

We took the New Year’s Cruise with Viking as our cousin’s had booked it and we love Viking. From the easy on to the easy exit all was seamless. Our rooms were ready so we went and checked out our room on the 4 th floor and our cabin stuart Mohammad was there to greet us and tell us what was different from the ship we took on the Homelands and he was excellent. The room was always made up, fresh water refilled and new towels and products refilled in the bathroom. Viking does it right, from all balcony rooms to no kids under 18 and no casino. They don’t nickel and dime you as specialty restaurants are included, wine, beer, soda included at lunch/ dinner but what makes Viking special is the crew, everyone smiling and always a sunny good morning/evening, nothing was too much trouble. A few issues we had was two of the shows were the same as the shows we saw a year and a half ago on the Homelands ( ABBA/Beatles) maybe it’s time to change shows as most people are returning Viking cruisers now. Also in our refrigerator on the last 2 nights we had all seltzer water with no diet/ regular coke as we requested and they don’t supply chips anymore just pack of nuts and small chocolates. This, I believe, was a new route for Viking, Turquoise Caribbean Seas, and some of the included tours were not up to Viking standards. We drove almost an hour to Mérida only to have half an hour in the main square and our guide gave no description of what we were looking at just, “ this is the oldest house, this is the oldest church” and no time to visit anything. The trip to San Gervasio was disappointing as our guide talked about the Mayan number system and calendar but not anything detailed about the complex and never saw the tall house, just the few ruins at the beginning of the complex so we had plenty of time to shop, which we didn’t need. In Key West we could not tender but Viking worked their magic and got one ship at port to leave early so that we could at least get into Key West and everyone could take the included trolley ride, but all optional tours had to be cancelled. On the plus side we were in Key West for the sunset. I took the Snorkeling at the Barrier Reef in Belize and it was a great tour, the guides were very informative and never left people on their own in the water. We were in groups and they had kayaks around in case anyone got in trouble, and a rum punch to wash out the salt water in the mouth when we came back on the boat made for a nice touch. We were dropped off at Belize port where most stores/ restaurants were closed because it was Sunday. One thing about this cruise was that there were two sea days (7 night cruise) and as Viking is a port intensive cruise line, this was a disappointment to us as another port vs. a sea day would have been better for us as we don’t like sitting around but enjoy doing things. Like I said we took it because of my cousin’s taking it and probably would not have chosen this cruise for just us, but we were continuing on to a Florida vacation so this was a nice start to it. We are already booked for Frances Finest River Cruise this summer and Empires of the Mediterranean for 2020 so Viking has our loyalty, this is just my observation of this cruise. Read Less

Every activity from boarding to disembarking is organized and easy to follow. The amenities are great, especially the spa and pools. Our room was very clean, had everything you might need, and the low lighting and heated floor in the bathroom are very nice. It is nice to have such a great movie selection on the big TV, excellent wireless connection, and American outlets for your devices. The steward was very attentive, and the mini bar was filled with our requested tonic water every day. The food and cocktails are all good on the ship, and the Chef's Table is a must for anyone who cruises with Viking. The excursions were fun and educational, but I wish we had more time in each port. I already booked my next Viking cruise for June. Read Less

We chose this itinerary on Viking because we wanted to see Key West and spend a few days with warm sunny weather. We had previously taken a Viking River Cruise and enjoyed the smaller ship aspect of the Sun. From embarkation to disembarkation, we were treated like valued guests. Our room (DV6) on Deck 3 was spacious, well organized and with sufficient storage in closet, drawers and bathroom. We loved having the balcony and the room to enjoy coffee at sunrise and a wine at sunset. The coffee pot was a particular treat as we aren’t human until coffee is consumed. Instruction for pot were fairly clear and produced strong coffee...just right! All meals were tasty, varied and served with a smile and wine. We ate at Manfedi’s one evening and Chef’s Table another...both we’re outstanding. The entertainment was well planned and timed which suited those of us who are ready to retire before midnight. There were lots of public spaces to give the impression of a much larger ship....would highly recommend for a relaxing winter break...or any adult get away. Read Less

We initially were skeptical about a 120 day ocean cruise but we were. very happy that we chose to take this cruise. I had some food allergy issues but the staff were very good to make sure my needs were accommodated. The staff of the ship were excellent. From the Barista who made us Capuchinos, to the bartenders and all the dining staff in the various restaurants. The Captain had a good sense of humour and kept us informed of what was going on. The Cruise Director was outstanding in all aspects and readily available to talk to anyone. The entertainment throughout the cruise was excellent. The enrichment lectures were very good for the most part. The shore excursions surprised as and were very good. Overall, no complaints at all. Viking has thought of everything to make this World Cruise the best of everything. The entertainment, excursions, enrichment, and food have all been exceptional. Viking has staffed this World Cruise with their best people in every department. Thus service is excellent. We have enjoyed cooking classes on days at sea. The enrichment program speakers have been very good and come from a variety of backgrounds including art history, government, retired military, and even a cookbook writer. Please note that this cruise is not for handicap or elderly people. The excursions require quite a bit of walking, climbing stairs, and stamina. No excursion is wheel chair, scooter, or walker friendly. Getting around the ship can be maneuvered easily when the seas are calm. We have encountered quite a few days of rough seas when even able bodied guests have struggled to stay on their feet. All in all our expectations have been more than met on this wonderful Viking Sun. We have traveled on several Viking River Cruises in Europe that are fantastic. Friends raved about a cruise in the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas on the Viking Star. One look at the web shots of the Viking Sun convinced us to take the three-week cruise from Miami to Los Angeles. All of our expectations were exceeded. Transfer from the airport to the ship was efficient. Boarding took about 10 minutes and we met our friends who took the Viking Star cruise in the cafeteria. Food at all of the venues was terrific. There were even Chinese pork dumplings at breakfast. Manfredi's was especially scrumptious. Kudos for the lobster stir-fried noodles at 10 o'clock PM by the pool. The Scandinavian decor and accommodations on the entire ship were clean, sleek and comfortable. The Theatre was especially well-done. It was a perfect venue for he entertainment and lectures. The quality of the musicians, singers, magicians and lecturers was the best among the several cruise companies that we have used. The most impressive part of our experience was the friendliness of the staff from the cabin attendants to the captain. Some of the lecturers told us that they had never been welcomed as well or treated as well as they had on this cruise. They said that when the staff is treated well by the company it shows in the quality of their service for the passengers. We want to especially that our wonderful cruise director, who had a wonderful personality and a startlingly powerful mezzo suprano voice. Our staff guide on the trip to Havana was lovely and made the tour especially enjoyable. Later we learned that she was the captain's wife! Bus 49 forever! We meet terrific fellow passengers and were sad to leave half of them when we disembarked at Long Beach. However, we are enjoying their blogs during the rest of their round-the-world cruise. We've signed up for the Bergen to Iceland cruise on the Viking Star in 2019. Read Less

Embarkation in Miami was disorganized. Our luggage from the hotel was put on two different buses and the port employed porters would not load the luggage until a tip was paid for each bag. The ship was beautiful and at no time did it seem crowded. Lots of areas to relax in a quiet spot when that is what you wanted. The stateroom was nice and the room steward was excellent. The food and service in all of the dinning venues was excellent. The service in the Explorers Lounge was sometimes hit or miss. Most of the shore excursions were good, but the Quiet Vox should be used on all excursions both on the bus and during the walking portion of the tour. Some of the buses had PA systems that were not very useful. All of the tour guides should be full trained on how to setup and use the Quiet Vox as we had to show a couple of the tour guide how to sync the individual units to the tour guides system. This trip was everything and more that one would expect from Viking. It was our first ocean experience with them although we've done two Viking river cruises. From the time we arrived at the Port of Miami until we were loaded on buses for the LA airport, it was indeed the trip of a life time. This ship was simply spectacular! We were very hesitant to book an ocean cruise as the idea of a floating hotel of 2-3,000 passengers did not excite us. We were even skeptical of Vikings 930 passengers. That apprehension quickly disappeared, as we never felt like we had that many fellow cruisers. There are so many 'intimate' areas throughout the ship where people can read, chill out, play cards . . . We booked an Explorer suite and WOW, it was nothing short of amazing. The layout and amount of space was incredible. The dining options really appealed to us. We don't mind buffet style for breakfast and lunch but enjoy a traditional sit down with wait staff for dinner. It would be hard to chose between Manfredi's and The Chef's Table, as both offered fine dining with separate twists. The Chef's Table was SO intimate and we met the chef each time we dined there (6), which was quite special. Manfredi's offered a wonderful Italian style menu with beautiful wines - we enjoyed it almost a dozen times in our 23 day cruise. On board entertainment is not particularly important to us but we did attend about 6 evening performances, which were really quite good. Unfortunately we were looking forward to The Kitchen Table excursion but it was not available on this trip. Instead, cooking classes were offered on sea days and we attended 3. We had SUCH a good time. The classroom is state of the art and with only 8-10 participants, it's just a really interesting 3 hours. Most of the on-shore excursions were educational and interesting but there were a few duds - particularly Nicaragua. We also felt that we spent too much time in Cuba, and wish that one of the Cuba days would have been added to Costa Rica, Cabo or even Guatemala. Cienfuegos was a very disappointing first port of call. The primary reason for us booking this cruise was going through the Panama Canal and we were not disappointed. We were both very prepared for this part of our cruise, having both read the book "The Path Between the Seas." The excursion the day before cruising the canal was great as we got a local look at both sides of the canal and the actual experience of going through the locks, experiencing this enormous feat of mankind, was beyond superlatives. We enjoyed this cruise so much that on the second day, we booked the Alaska cruise for 2019 and booked the exact same room! If we could afford it, we would have booked several. Read Less

We had planned for this Viking inaugural round-the-world cruise two years earlier, but we decided to get married one week before our departure - so it became our extended honeymoon and what a memorable honeymoon it turned out to be. Before signing up for the cruise, we studied the countries and ports we will be visiting. We were very impressed with the ports that Viking has chosen since most of them were not the frequently picked by the usual crowd. We were also glad that Viking has taken the chore of obtaining all the necessary visas at no cost to us. The entire embarkation and disembarkation process was a breeze and we were the envy of the passengers of other cruise ships docking nearby. Everything was top notch, services such as dining, entertainment and excursions, to the ship and cabin. Viking has always been rated numero uno for their river cruises, but after launching world cruises three years ago, Viking has been rated numero uno already for 2016 and 2017 - very impressive. We chose Viking because we had cruised with them on the rivers of Europe. We chose the 141 day World Cruise so we could see the world. We were not disappointed on either goal. Many friends asked before the cruise if 141days was too much and we weren’t sure but now that it is done we could recommend it without reservation. The ship was brand new and a beautiful design, elegant but comfortable, plenty of places to find a quiet spot to read. There were bridge lessons and duplicate play which was a surprise. The entertainment was fantastic and quite varied. Food was outstanding. Viking doesn’t nickel and dime you with a lot of extra expenses. On such a long cruise we actually got to know the crew well and crew members actually left the ship before we did and the good bye ceremonies were great. Our Cruise Director, Heather Clancy, was the most amazing talent and amazing person. As we left the ship to come home at 4:45AM in London, she was there to say good bye and give us a hug, as were the other Officers. She also led our Christian Worship each week. The house Band was amazing and backed up a wide range of entertainers on the stage at night and performed afternoon concerts in the atrium. The whole 141 days was the trip of a lifetime. Read Less

We've always wanted to go on a world cruise (150 days) - and we had heard such wonderful things about Viking. Also, the Viking Sun was a new ship with modern electronics. The ship was a smaller one with less than 1000 passengers, which was great for us. All the appointments on the ship were clean, new and comfortable. A goodly number of dining venues was available and all were very good. The ship planned many, many daily activities just in case the shore excursions weren't enough. And at every port, there was always one included excursion. There were also a varied quantity of other excursions if you wanted to go in a different direction. The nice thing about the ship being smaller was that we rarely had to be tendered into port. Also, we visited ports that larger ships couldn't go to. Initially the Wi-Fi was too slow, but the management listened and arranged to have it augmented and sped up. Much happier after that. The en suite TV electronic system was marvelous. The service was wonderful and the crew always cheerful and attentive. Getting on and off this ship was much easier than the larger ships by far. Will definitely sail with Viking again. Read Less

The hotel was beautiful. The experience was fantastic. Viking provided us a drive in vintage American cars through Havana. The driver was personable and friendly. After dinner we were then taken to the Tropicana nightclub for a colorful, entertaining musical dancing show. The Cuban bus tour guide had perfect English and was well educated and provided wonderful information about Cuba and the people in a delightful manner. It was exactly what we were looking for in a trip. The ship is fantastic. The staff is attentive and professional. We absolutely loved the Chef's Table dinner. We loved how you could grab a cup of coffee or drink, and go find a place to just sit and enjoy it with a book. Very relaxing experience. Read Less

This was our third cruise with Viking and we chose this cruise because of our past experience. The ship is so conveniently designed for the comfort of the passengers. Our Cabin was quite comfortable even for a 122 day cruise. The steward were extremely attentive and took care of our every need. The food was very much to our liking and offered many alternatives for us.there were always excellent alternatives from which to choose. The shore excursions seemed well organized and offered many alternatives from which to choose. There was high quality entertainment every evening. I don’t think we missed more than a handful of the performances. There just seemed to be so many things to do for personal enjoyment. The interaction with so many new friends was awesome and several have kept in touch even four months later. We have booked another, our fourth cruise with Viking and are counting the days. We even booked the same cabin as well. With all of Viking ships constructed and laced out the same it just felt like we were going to our home away from home. Thank you Viking for another wonderful experience Roger and Kaye Read Less

Four months of traveling alone, both firsts for me (and for the Sun), along with eccentric eating practices, made me rather apprehensive as the embarkation date approached. Instead it was a glorious experience. The variety of the 50+ port excursions, my raison d'être, many ports one-dayers and/or new to Viking, not to mention the preparatory port talks, were well run, seldom a cattle-car experience. The World Cafe provided me with my best dining experience ever, for its variety and convenience. I'd done a short cruise on the sister Viking Star, and was as delighted as I expected to be with the cabin. The senior staff, especially the cruise director, were extraordinarily warm, energetic, and responsive to constructive feedback. Other high points were the duplicate bridge, trivia contests, and library contents. With respect to entertainment, I've never been charmed by stage shows or cocktail parties, but I was delighted to watch the Eagles' march to the Super Bowl during the first weeks crossing the Pacific. Though I'm quite happy by myself, the fellow travelers I met on excursions and shipboard activities were mostly good companions. Only persistent problem was temperature control in the public spaces -- not unexpected for a first cruise in the tropics which were mostly new to Viking. Value for money? Well, compared to the costs of my other travels, I expected this would be a one-off, but not so! Read Less

Because the cruise went to Cuba a place that neither my wife or I have been to before. The trip was very enjoyable. The overnight stay in Havana was a real pleasure. The hotel was great and the show at the Tropicana was really good. They took us from the hotel to the Tropicana in a older convertible which was nice. The food that was supplied was good also. They claimed that the hotel was a five star hotel and it probably was. The rest of the sight seeing was food also. The guide was well informed. He didn't leave much out if anything. This was my first sailing with Viking Ocean Cruises and very satisfied with the whole experience. Looking forward to booking another cruise with them. Everything was first class and the way we were treated on board the ship was great. Food was great and the buffet and the dining room was terrific. Read Less
