We just returned from a 7 day cruise down the Mississippi from Memphis to New Orleans. We had waited a full year after maiden voyage to allow Viking to work out any kinks in the cruising process involving a brand new vessel. We were also hoping that the record low Mississippi River levels would not be a factor again this year after the severe drought from last year (lightning doesn't strike twice, ...
By way of background, my wife and I, mid- 70s, have done quite a bit of ocean cruising on many lines, in recent years mainly on Regent and (the old) Crystal. We have done 3 precious river cruises on Tauck and Uniworld. We found this cruise to be highly enjoyable in most aspects, with one glaring exception.
Let’s get the bad news out of the way first.
Service- 1 star
The service on this ...
The selection of stops on this Mississippi journey are appealing and varied and differ from one to another as your travel down/up stream. Small towns and communities apart from Baton Rouge....and of course Memphis and NOLA. From musical legends, civil war experiences, life on the river, American plantation history and many other interests as you sail/stopover.
In round terms this is a very ...
We have traveled extensively, both on Viking and with others, and this trip was attractive as an alternative to an annual trip or two overseas. It was to an area of the Country with which we had little exposure and, seemed like a great idea. There were highs and lows as befits a new ship. We found the ship and our Junior suite both attractive in the Viking way and clean. Our cabin attendants ...
My wife and I have taken six Viking cruises…five river and one ocean.
All have been very special and while each has its unique travel highlights, the consistency of the travel experience with Viking prompts us to return.
We wanted to see the Mississippi knowing it is an iconic and historic landmark. We settled on the Lower part of the river leaving from Memphis and taking the seven day ...
First time trying a Mississippi River cruise after taking over 12 ocean cruises. The itinerary of Memphis to New Orleans was my main reason for choosing this cruise. Flying into Memphis the cruise included an overnight stay at The Peabody Hotel. Took taxi to airport, cost of $39.50 plus tip seemed high but efficient. The Peabody is a grand lady and was glad to stay there but my room extremely ...

Hello Hndbg Qn! Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We appreciate your kind words and are glad that you enjoyed the room service, dining room food, ports of call, and...
We had been recommended the American Queen by a close friend, who is quite choosy so we felt confident all would be prefect!
Not quite!
Disappointed with quality of some of entertainment.
Particularly the lounge singer- we felt very poor, could have been much better.
Sadly dinner service was lacking, although did improve so I guess someone at a neighbourung table may have said ...
Hi Justbeginners!

This was my 4th trip on the American Queen this year. Quite frankly, I found the music to be addictive! The whole experience is quite nice, but the music is the biggest draw for me. All the musicians are top notch. I especially enjoy Greg Lupton, who plays piano in the Captain's Bar twice a night. He is so engaging, with his sing-a-longs and warm humor. He's also a very, very talented ...
Choose this as it was in US. Really liked the all inclusive feature of hotel the night before the cruise, tips and most shore excursions. The onboard lectures were informative of the Civil War, and the river. Entertainment were local musicians and their program reflected the area we were located. Staff were friendly and helpful. Food reflected the South, liked the fact one could order a half ...
This was our third American Cruise in less than 2 years. This spring we cruised Puget Sound, and the year before the Florida Rivers.
The only disappointment this time was the lack of sound proofing between our room, 511, and a crew member. We were awakened each morning by his alarm clock, 527am, 447am, etc. We could almost hear what was being said on his TV.
On the other side of us we could ...
