We cruised the Rhine River on the Viking Ingvi - a brand-new ship for 2014. Starting at Basel, Switzerland and ending in Amsterdam, the trip was magnificent. The amount of activities, the sights, and the people we met - especially in the ports - were all wonderful. The ship was immaculate, the staff friendly and efficient, and the trip could not have been better. Our tour guides on shore were knowledgeable, friendly and so very interesting. We came away from each town on the Rhine with knowledge that gave us a sense of knowing what it's like to live there. We were not tourists; we were travelers. Food aboard ship and on land was very good. I must thank Nick Hale, our Program Director, for more than one night of incredible fun. We wish our friend Nick well in his voyages! Make no mistake, this is not a "cut-rate" trip. It was not cheap. But what we got for the money was excellent. Hats off to the Duke's Palace Hotel in Bruges, Belgium: an absolutely top-notch destination in a storybook town. We chose Bruges for our extension tour after the cruise. Will definitely go back to Bruges! In short, Viking's Rhine River cruise was excellent and we highly recommend the Switzerland-to-Amsterdam (heading downstream) route. If you want to see Europe in one trip, this could be the way to do it!! Read Less

This was our fourth river cruise and the third with Viking. Everything met or exceeded our expectations. We decided to do independent air so that we could have a week prior to embarcation to tour the Dordogne area. As with every trip, a week was too short. If anyone needs recommendations about such a week such as a good cottage to rent and a good itinerary, email me for more. When we arrived at the ship in Bordeaux before noon on the first day, the crew was in full activity mode, ready to greet us and make us welcome. We went to the lounge area until our room was ready (very quickly) and were then told that it was available. Our bags were in the room. The room had adequate space, and storage. The bathroom was better than prior ships. Information in the room was sufficient to get oriented and make decisions. Meals were without fail, excellent, and the wine was free flowing. This was our first longship, and it was excellent. It was everything the brochure said it would be. The internet access was spotty, and slow, but given that it was satellite access, not surprising. The included excursions were all interesting, the wine tastings and lectures superb. We opted for the chateau excursion which was a highlight of the trip. An excellent presentation from tasting grapes from the vine, to grape juice from Merlot and Cabernet Grapes, to excellent tastings, and a wonderful meal with wine pairings. A joy! The castle at Bourg was another highlight, even in the rain. The history was palpable. So many highlights, all I can say is take this trip. If you like castles, history and wine, this trip will not disappoint.   Read Less

While I had heard great things about the Viking River Cruise experience, I was not prepared for the level of service that we, a friend and I, experienced on board the Atla. From our greeting at the airport in Amsterdam (we opted for airfare and transfers with the company), to the ship's staff, everyone was warm and gracious. The stand out on our cruise was our Program Director whose background well-prepared him for his job. Well versed in the history of Europe's art, music, food ways and culture, he was also on top of current issues and events in the countries, cities and villages that we visited. The local guides were always good. I was especially impressed with the quality of the guides in Germany, drawn from the "Geschichte fur Alles" (History for Everyone) Program. Mostly young men and women who were graduate students in their nation's past. Impressive! The optional excursions were worth the extra charge. I highly recommend the Mozart and Strauss Concert at the Residenz Palace in Vienna! Our midnight arrival in Budapest, however, was the highlight of the trip. Our ship was delayed at locks along the Danube, so we approached the city with all of its lights ablaze. The sight was breathtaking. Something I will never forget. I cannot say I have ever had a better cruise experience. I will certainly be sailing with Viking again! Read Less

This was a wonderful trip and I would recommend it to anyone. We had wonderful food, met many nice people, saw an incredible number of places both on the land and the river, and were treated royally by the entire staff of the ship. The excursion guides for each land tour ranged from really, really good to truly excellent. They all knew the history and politics of the places they took us to and through and they were well-spoken, usually witty, and very capable of answering all questions put to them. The walking tours were well paced so that it wasn't difficult to keep up and the "quiet boxes" we were each furnished with allowed us to hear the guides, no matter how far we were from them. The staff on the ship were only too willing to provide assistance in any way they could. When my traveling companion got sick one night, they delivered her dinner to our room and kept checking on her to make sure she was all right. They furnished umbrellas on rainy days and they provided bottles of water every time we left the ship to go on an excursion. Viking did its best to educate us about every place we visited, not only providing lectures and occasional local on-board entertainment, but also delivering nightly newsletters that contained pertinent information about the places we would see. This was very helpful, given the "information overload" that inevitably occurred. I can now refer to those nightly newsletters to refresh my memory about each place we toured. I really enjoyed this trip and feel very privileged to have taken it. Read Less

Like the title says, we really enjoyed ourselves. The 'Scenic Pearl' is an immaculately clean and spacious ship. All of the crew, the cabin maids, butlers, bar staff and the waiters were extremely accommodating and friendly. Eniko, our cheery cabin person kept our cabin spic and span. Ratko, our butler, was available at any time to provide us with whatever we needed. The waiters in the main dining room and the Portobello room were good-humoured, friendly and very, very attentive. I want to name them all as being outstanding all but I'm afraid I'll miss one or two. We were definitely spoiled. For every meal, the food was delicious and fresh. The chef and his crews did a splendid job in preparing our always tasty meals. In the lounge, Antonio, Sandy and Svetla served us quickly and efficiently with our drinks. Their patience and good humour in dealing with a bunch of sometimes half-drunk senior citizens was amazing and appreciated. I have to say a good word about our Cruise Director, Werny Beyer (I hope I got the name right). He has a stern look and piercing eyes. However, his daily updates were very enjoyable and filled with good laughter. His somewhat stern appearance hides a great sense of humour. We took excursions at every port and were provided with knowledgeable and informative guides. The 'tailormade' GPSs were great. We could wander around during the tours and still hear the guide. What a great idea. Finally, what made our cruise so enjoyable was the mix of passengers. More than half were Australian. There were about 20 Canadians, including us. As well, there were about 20 British and 4 Americans. My wife and I tried to mix with as many different people as possible. For most of the time, we fell in and sat with 3 Australian couples and had a truly great time. Who knew that Australians have such great sense of humour?! We laughed long and hard about everything and nothing. Most fun of all was learning new words and phrases from our Aussie friends. To paraphrase Churchill, "Australia and Canada are two English-speaking countries separated by a common language."   Read Less

We had a wonderful time! Our favorite vacation ever. The cruise folks were great! From our meal servers to our room maid to the managers to everyone, we were treated extremely well. The food on board was always varied and of high quality. The meals were some of the best relaxing time, a chance to chat with fellow travelers and exchange experiences. The visits to the cities on the way were always educational and well planned. The guides did a super job. As we review our pictures, we re-experience the whole trip and can't wait until we can schedule another cruise. I could go on for a long time about all the folks, visits, and memories we enjoyed, but I will end this review by simply saying "Thank you for providing a high point in our travel experiences." We had spent a year planning for this vacation, and read as much as we could about our destinations and read hundreds reviews from other Viking cruisers. And guess what? It's ever better than they said it was! I can't tell you how wonderful it is to know that for 16 days (we booked a pre-cruise tour in Budapest) every detail was looked after by the Viking River Cruises staff and their tour guides, and bus drivers. We had no worries about getting to and from the airport/hotel/ship etc. The tour guides were fabulous, funny and informative, bringing history to life in many cases. The on board staff was phenomenal and not only took care of our every need, but often anticipated them and were a step ahead of us. The food was wonderful, and we enjoyed our meals with passengers from all over the world and had a wonderful time getting to know new people. The ship itself Viking Idi, was immaculate and a very relaxing atmosphere. The housekeeping staff cleaned your room every morning and even came back for a turn down service during the dinner meal. Whenever we disembarked for a tour of that day's city or town, we were given bottled water to take along. And one of my favorite features...this awesome machine near the lounge that dispensed fresh coffee, hot cocoa, or hot water for tea. I drank a lot of hot cocoa on those chilly October mornings and evenings. Read Less

It was fantastic on so many levels. It was more than I ever expected. The crew was so professional and personable. Loved the meals and the wine to go with. Loved the tour guides on the ship. They were very well informed on the history of the country as well as being fun and personable. Same with the Russians hired to do the tours. Loved the smaller amount of people that the Rurik ship could accommodate. I really do not think any other Viking cruise could top this one. Hopefully, I am wrong about this. Room was perfect. Since we had never been to Europe, I whined to the booking agent that I wasn't going to go unless someone held my hand the entire way! Brian assured me that would be the case...and Viking did not disappoint. From the moment we arrived, there were smiling faces to help us with the smallest detail. It was more than great service. Each and every employee we encountered seemed to truly love their job, and they went out of their way to treat us like royalty. It was worth every penny we paid for the cruise. I got sick about halfway through the trip and the program director, Henrietta, personally accompanied me to a pharmacy in town. That was ABOVE the call of duty in my book. (Heads up! Go see a DOCTOR & get full diagnosis/written excuse to miss port tours if you plan to make a claim with the travel insurance company.) I asked Viking handle the airline arrangements. The connections were seamless, however, I learned that you will NOT receive any sky miles credit from the airline unless you book it yourself. Also, we had to leave the ship at 3:30 a.m. YIKES! I was sorry I didn't notice that when I confirmed the reservations. However, EVEN AT THAT HOUR, there was a precious guy who accompanied us to the airport and helped us with everything, thanking us for choosing Viking and wishing us a safe journey home. Thank you, Viking River Cruises and (especially) the staff on the Delling for giving us the trip of a lifetime. Read Less

We flew from Philadelphia to Amsterdam and were met at Schilpol Airport by a Viking agent. From there a Viking driver took us on the Viking coach to the Moevinpick Hotel. The hotel was wonderful-the food in the bar & restaurant( Silk Road ) was excellent. We were greeted at the reception desk with a warm welcome. Esther took us on a wonderful tour of the city-she is a great guide. After 2 days there we boarded the Ingvi at the port. Our cabin was more than we expected with ample room for everything we had. Suitcases went under the bed with no problem. Storage was enough for all that we had. Our program director, Nick Hale was THE BEST!!! He always had us laughing. Our waiters, Irinel, Ivo, were also wonderful, as were the bartenders, Sasha & George. Food was always good & plentiful. Our shore excursions were informative and the guides were well informed. To sum our trip up. I would absolutely go again on a Viking cruise. I have already recommended it to others. All in all, I loved everything about the journey. Thanks to all the crew. Read Less

The crew were very helpful and very knowledgeable, especially our program director. The included guided tours were all very nicely done, guides were knowledgeable and all spoke excellent English. We were lucky with weather and only had rain one day. Transfers and tours were on new, comfortable busses. Everything went off on time, as promised. We have traveled to Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium and this surpassed all of the others. Budapest was magical. The architecture is like something out of a fairy tale. We experienced so much history and saw such beauty. My husband said the best beer he ever tasted was a Pilsner in Bratslava, Slovakia. We ate sausages at an 800 year old restaurant in Germany. Ginerbread, chocolates, and great shopping in Germany. Quality items of glass, wool and wood were to be found in many shops. Our tours took in the highlights of each area. From a tram over the Rhine up to a fort to some of the great cathedrals of Europe we saw it all. The sound system each person is equipped with makes hearing the tour guide loud and clear very simple. The Viking staff was, as always, impeccable. They are there from the moment after you go through customs until you are given assistance at the airport for your flight home. One never feels nervous about the language or customs because the staff has smoothed the way beforehand. From the efficiency of the housekeeping staff to the waiters and waitresses the Viking staff make you feel welcome. This was beyond our expectations. We have been on ocean cruises in the past, and expected tis to be similar. The only similarity is water! This was so enjoyable...the ship was spotless, the crew couldn't do enough for you, the food was delicious and abundant, the tours were well planned and the entertainment on board was wonderful. If we could do this again next week, I'd start packing. The only negative thing we encountered was that we paid extra for a room with a balcony and were not able to use it 7 days of the 14 day cruise. The ballast drains were adjacent to our balcony and when water was pumped out the drain it runs onto the balcony floor. There are floor drains on the balconies on either side of ours, but ours seemed to be the low spot so the water pooled there and had no where to drain. Some days the water was an inch deep, Our cabin steward tried her best to dry it, but it seemed there was no vacuum or pumping equipment available to her. Cabin towels were not adequate to handle the amount of water present. That being said...the location of the room, from the standpoint of convenience, was great.   Read Less

Pictures, films, books, and magazines fall short of capturing China in it's beauty, frenzy, contradictions, and growth to modernization. The Viking cruise did a fantastic job in showing as much as possible in a short period of time. Everything was well planned, well timed, and executed. The tour escort Jenna was exceptional. The ship was very comfortable with good food, cabins, lectures, activities, and staff. The pace was good for older travelers wherein we saw a lot but were not hurried from place to place. We had time to rest with some leisure time on board. We took the extension to Guilin and Hong Kong which was well worth it. All the hotels were 5 star by western standards. The buses were comfortable and modern. We could not have covered as much ground on our own in such a huge country especially not knowing the language. Vikings airport service was efficient and much appreciated. They handled all our ticketing and bags from the moment we booked, arrived in Shanghai until we left the country with no slip ups. We had a wonderful experience on our River Cruise. The entire staff on board was accommodating, friendly, helpful and available. The service was excellent. Each meal was delicious and expertly served. Cabin service was excellent as well. The cruise director, Juta, went out of her way to ensure that we had a wonderful time. She was informative, patient, honest and friendly. The entire staff seem to work flawlessly. The shore excursions were excellent and the local guides informative and helpful. The only "negative" that I have is that the staterooms and bathrooms are a bit on the small size and there is not enough storage in the regular sized rooms. It also would be great if there was another public space on the ship other than the lounge and upper deck (it was too cold to go up there on most days!) for people to talk, play games and read. Having laundry done by the staff was extremely expensive and we wound up washing some items in the very small sink. Having a laundry room for passengers to use (coin operated) would be extremely helpful. Other than that, the Viking cruise was exceptional and wonderful. My cruise on the Rhone River from Lyon to Avignon, France with 3 days in Paris to start, was perfect. I have zero complaints regarding anything whether it be about the ship or the excursions. I have traveled little and am from the Midwest USA. Our initial stay was at the Marriott Rive Gauche in Paris where concierge service, by Viking, was provided and appreciated. Our transfers from airport arrival to ship to airport return were dependable and perfect. The ship was fabulous- well appointed, comfortable with service "over the top." Daily information meetings during cocktail hour were needed and appreciated. Every excursion was delightful. I bought 3 extra excursions. A small complaint here would be that I would like "shopping" time in the towns and villages. I'm not a souvenir collector, but, having a fine arts back ground, I would appreciate time to scout out authentic French products and creations. On board food was so fabulous I had not desire to dine elsewhere! Evening entertainment was professional and fun. As I said at the start, this cruise was perfect in every way. I recommend Viking River Cruises to everyone knowing I will be thanked. And thank-you, Viking, for helping me have an experience of a life time. The end result is that I have plans to return to France! Read Less

We are not easily impressed having been disappointed on many occasions, but this is one time where the trip actually lived up to its hype. While travel in China is not without its drawbacks, we felt that Viking did an excellent job of delivering the highlights of China within a reasonable time frame and at a reasonable cost. We like the corporate culture, and were amazed by our tour guide, Bonnie, and the staff onboard the Viking Emerald. I felt that the people Viking employed were very concerned about the welfare and comfort of the participants and very determined to give us personal insights that you would not have gotten had you tried to attempt a trip of this complexity on your own. We had no problem with food safety and were given unlimited bottled water everywhere we went. We only spent 5 days of the cruise tour on the ship, but we found it to be a pleasant experience. There was a pride in doing a superior job that we have not seen in a very long time. I think the Viking corporate culture breeds this type of employee and they should be commended for their excellence. Read Less

This was our second experience on a Viking River Cruise and once again, I am happy to report, the experience exceeded our expectations. Our timing may have been a little late in that the weather was less than favorable, but we were prepared for that eventuality., Our first impression of our ship, The Ingvar, was it appeared a tad tired. We understood that this was its final cruise of the season and attributed those minor imperfections to the conclusion of a busy season. Our cabin was adequate, but if I were king I would make the balcony smaller or even eliminate it in favor of a more spacious cabin. The fact that the sliding glass door opens would be ample for me. That again is just a personal observation The food was excellent if anything there may have been too much of it. On some days we barely finished breakfast and lunch was about to be served. The lunches could be lighter, but no one was forces us to eat. I thought our cruse director, Alina, was an empty uniform. Perhaps I do not have a complete understanding of her duties, but compared with the cruise director we had on an Avalon Trip from Basel to Amsterdam (we could not get on Viking). there was no comparison. We had a man named Dragan who was omnipresent and far more involved with the passengers. He personally led many of the tours and was a veritable mountain of information. On the tour of the bridge the Captain was nowhere in sight, and delegated that duty to the first mate. There may have been a reason for this, but it was not explained to the guests.. Our cabin was always cleaned nicely and the wait staff was courteous, cooperative, cheerful and attentive. In particular Rica and Antonio stood out as superior employees. After experiencing the trip I understand why so much time is spent in Moscow and St. Petersburg. There is simply little of interest between the two cities. Viking did an excellent job in adjusting to the low water situation by arranging to bus us to Yaroslavl. I was unimpressed with Mandrogy which came off as little more than a tourist trap selling authentic Russian Rubbish. Kizhi as an opportunity to walk in the fresh air. The visits to the school and the home also seem contrived. Some folks seemed to enjoy them and I may be a bit cynical, but they did little for me. The piano player and the singer became a little tedious by the 5th day. It would seem to me that an organized sing along or even an impromptu amateur hour have added some variety or spontaneous guest involvement. In summary, while I have offered some critical observations, I remain very pleased with our experience and have become an unpaid sales person for Viking by encouraging others to enjoy river travel. The fact that you only unpack and repack once is marvelous. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being perfect, I would rate our trip a 9.5. . Read Less

Accomodations for the entire trip was top of the line, and comfortable, allowing us to soak in all the sites and sounds of each location with ease! Great trip that made is both eager to do another river cruise. The ship (Var) is very new as are most of the Viking ships. We spent three extra days in Amsterdam before the cruise, and really loved that very diverse and interesting city. We want to go back! The location of our hotel, Moevenpik (sp?) was excellent for access to the tram system, canal cruises, and embarkation on the Var. The various stops to and up the Rhine included Viking arranged bus and walking tours that were well planned and very interesting. Guides on those tours were excellent, especially in Cologne, Heidelberg , and Strasbourg. The top deck proved to be a wonderful place to relax and view the beautiful towns, castles, and vineyards as we cruised from stop to stop. Not enough good words exist to describe the service and food in the lounge and dining room. The staff is very well trained, attentive, and a delightful part of our experience. There were many choices for all meals, so I'm sure everyone was more than pleased. We found that cruising with only about 190 passengers on this ship was much more enjoyable for us than past ocean cruises with three to five thousand. This was our first cruise. I did not want to join one of the large ocean going cruise ships with hoards of travelers and this cruise was ideal for someone wanting a much smaller environment. From our original contact with Viking to our final good-bye, the trip was all I could hope for and definitely more than I had imagined. The crew were amazing, the ship was great, the food was plentiful, always hot and provided lots of daily options, and the tours away from the ship (both offered through the package and optional ones) were terrific, as were the guides. We loved our cabin steward and all the towel animals that kept appearing on our bed. We met many nice travelers too. We did miss seeing a little of Basel because of lock issues but that change was handled very efficiently by VIking and we made up for it with more time in Breisach. We had chosen not to add on a pre-trip or post-trip excursion. Another time I would consider doing that and checking out the arrival or departure city a little more. We had Viking set up our airline flights as well and were very pleased with those. We have told our friends and acquaintances about the trip and encouraged them to check out Viking if they are looking for an amazing European river trip. We would highly recommend to anyone. Roof of the World was a trip of a lifetime! My husband and I thoroughly recommend it for both the cultural and historical aspects. We chose this excursion because it included visiting different areas of China and Llhasa, Tibet. Our group of 38 people were housed and traveled separately from other Viking groups (except on the river cruise) because we were the only group going to Tibet. Viking assigns a guide who remains with you throughout this trip. Our guide, Francis, is a Bejing native, and was by far the best guide we've ever had in our many travel experiences. He has 10+ years of travel industry experience and is able to share his personal experiences of the past 30-years of change within his country. Our time aboard the Emerald on the Yangtze River was marvelous. Cruising on this river we could enjoy a variety of local and business traffic, the farmers and fishers in their daily activities, the amazing Three Gorges and the minor gorges, Three Gorges Dam, and large and small cities along the route. Our cabin was compact but thoroughly comfortable. Closet space was a premium, but suitcases fit under the bed so you can store unnecessary clothing. (Note: this cruise is a relaxed environment/dressy casual atmosphere, so formal clothing is not needed here nor on land. Comfort is key!) The Emerald staff are helpful, friendly, and courteous. If they can't understand your question, they find someone who will help you. Of particular note are Lois (lounge), Paul (activities), and the head of the dining room (sorry, but I forgot his name!). With my food allergy, everyone was able to help me avoid problems. We were amazed at how rapidly staff remembered our names and room numbers! If you like to visit the lounge and like wine, we encourage you to sign up for the Premium package! Ordering from the menu or visiting the daily buffet gives a variety of food options. The port and shore excursions included local guides with detailed knowledge of history, traditions, and daily activities. We enjoyed walking through towns, museums, and temples to see and hear the local activities. The Vox speaker system is a perfect in these situations! The visit to a local Tibetan home was an excellent experience. The Viking School children visiting us onboard was wonderful. We were extremely lucky with beautifully clear weather on most days of our trip. The Great Wall was spectacular with fall foliage and blue skies. We know this isn't always the case, and breathing can be difficult for those with asthma or related health issues. Tibet's elevation makes moving and breathing difficult, but the people, places, and food makes it very worth drinking lots of water, resting, avoiding alcohol, and, if necessary, using oxygen. Embarkation, disembarkation, airport check-in, and baggage handling are very efficient. We enjoyed having someone else handling all this for us. A carryon bag and small "daypack" are essential in addition your checked bag. Be prepared for staying in luxury hotels, eating a variety of foods, and non-western toilets. Take this trip and be adaptable. Viking's trip to China and Tibet is excellent! Read Less
