Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument: The story of May 18, 1980, when Mount St, Helens exploded in what is regarded as the most disastrous volcanic eruption in U.S. history, is both fascinating and spine-chilling. Guides recount how 57 people lost their lives and catastrophic mud and lava flows altered the landscape forever. A series of visitor centers on the mountain explain about the geology of the mountain, as well as the human history. There are opportunities to explore beautiful wetlands around Silver Lake via a series of boardwalks, and to stroll marked trails higher up, with stunning views of the crater (weather permitting).
