Don't Miss in Amber Cove (Puerto Plata)

Puerto Plata: The port serves as a jumping-off point to local resorts, beaches, rum and cigar factories, and other attractions like the Amber Museum, the San Felipe Fortress and the Malecon, a three-mile-long boardwalk in Puerto Plata. Additionally, cruisers can check out a selection of excursions that include snorkeling, scuba diving, and ATV off-roading.

Zipline: At the port, you can buy unlimited passes to the zipline that crosses over the pool area -- $20 for an adult and $10 for a child. Be sure to wear closed-toe shoes and pull back any hair and secure loose items.

Water sports rentals: Rentals of water sports equipment are available, like a standup paddleboard by the hour or half-hour; pool floats; kayaks; and aqua boats. Umbrellas are $20 for the day, and Wi-Fi is $8. (Although check internet availability; we found connections to be unreliable.) Lockers are free, but require a refundable $6 deposit.

Cabanas: If you have a small party looking for some person space, you can rent a private cabana for the day -- $320 for one over the ocean, $299 for a poolside cabana or $295 for a hillside cabana. The cabanas accommodate up to eight people. A large, Grand Cabana accommodating up to 20 people, is $1,170 for the day. Amenities like water, soda, local snacks, air-conditioning, a safe, TV, W-Fi, waiter service and an all-day pass to the zipline is included with all cabanas. Other features are unique to each -- book a hillside cabana for a private Jacuzzi on your deck; book an ocean cabana for water sports; book a poolside cabana for a hammock and pool toys.

Tip: Hillside cabanas are great for active families looking to be close to the zipline and waterslide entrances; water babies should go for the pool cabanas; and romantic couples might enjoy the peaceful ocean cabanas with an overwater bar just steps away.

Sky Bar: The Co Co Cana is the bar and restaurant that serves Amber Cove, but the Sky Bar location is at the top of the hill overlooking the entire port. Grab a drink here for great views of your ship and surrounding sea and greenery.
