Don't Miss in Baie-Comeau

Shopping and dining is limited in town, but pop into the Boreale soap factory to see how they make their handmade, all-natural soaps, or grab a beer at Microbrasserie St-Pancrace; we liked the Uapishka witbeir and the Pointe-Noir coffee stout.

Located about 20 minutes out of town, Franquelin Heritage Lumberjack Village is a replica of a traditional lumber camp, complete with log cabins, a forge, a cookhouse and demonstrations of early logging life, staffed by enthusiastic volunteers.

The St. Lawrence region was once covered by a vast glacier, and the Garden of the Glaciers museum (Le Jardin des Glaciers) has a great multimedia exhibit showcasing glacial fundamentals and giving context on the river landscape. You can also check out Seashell Valley, a 10,000-year-old deposit of seashells left behind from the time the area was covered by the Goldthwait Sea.

Don a hard hat for a tour of Jean-Lesage Generating Station (also called the Manic-2 Dam), one of the world's largest gravity dams. Well-versed guides explain how massive amounts of water (twice the amount of Niagara Falls) are harnessed into energy, and take you inside the dam itself for an up-close look at this feat of engineering.
