Don't Miss in Sibenik

Krka National Park: Covering some 43 square miles along the Krka River, Krka National Park is best known for its seven waterfalls (and hundreds of mini-falls), the tallest of which is Skradinski Buk at 142 feet.. A one-hour loop trail takes visitors to a wooden bridge offering the best vantages of the thundering Skradinski Buk, while the rest of the trail weaves in and out of the forest, mostly on wooden walkways. Listen for the birds and frogs, which when combined with the sound of the waterfalls, create an appropriate background for the peaceful walk. (Cruisers with walking difficulty should note there are roughly 200 stairs on the trail.) For those who wish to skip the walking trail, you can also find a demonstration blacksmith, kitchen and weaver's shop.

Cathedral of St. James: If you've got any time to spend in Sibenik, your first stop should be to the Cathedral of St. James, a UNESCO World Heritage site built entirely of stone (no bricks or wood as a basis or to shore it up). Located in the front of the city's old town center, the cathedral was built between 1431 and 1536; one of its most striking features is a frieze decorated with more than 70 sculpted faces of men, women and children.

Sibenik City Museum: To find out more about the history of Sibenik, stop into the city museum located in part of the Rector's Palace. It's small but chockfull of history and artifacts, starting about 4,000 years ago and going through to the modern era and the Balkan unrest, during which Sibenik was bombed by the Serbians.

St. Michael's Fortress: One of four fortresses built by the Venetians during their rule, St. Michael's Fortress dates back to the 15th century. It provides one of the best viewpoints of the city and harbor.

Sokolarski Raptor Centre: If you're ok with striking out on your own, you can take a taxi to this rescue center where injured falcons are cared for. Here you'll find out all about the birds, and possibly get a chance to feed one.
