Don't Miss in Cincinnati

Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden: Those who followed the birth and life of the baby hippo, Fiona, already have a connection to the zoo. The second-oldest zoo in American, their mission statement succinctly captures the essence of the zoo: creating adventure, conveying knowledge, conserving nature, serving community. Visitors encounter a variety of birds, reptiles, insects and mammals, as well as a botanical garden with native plants. (3400 Vine Street; (513) 281-4700; daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed on Christmas Day)

Newport Aquarium: Located on the Kentucky side of the river, the aquarium displays thousands of animals in 1 million gallons of water. Popular inhabitants include rays, sharks, stingrays, penguins and seahorses. Touch tanks, penguin encounters and a backstage animal experience allow an up-close and personal encounter. (1 Levee Way, Newport, KY; (800) 406-3473; daily 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
