Deep in the Mexican jungle, Chacchoben is among the most famous ruins in Cozumel. These ancient pyramids have been excavated and restored, and now stand as testament to the myths and rituals of the mysterious Mayan peoples.

Here is a bit of advice -- take the deluxe trip as there is a maximum of 12 guests. We only had ten on our air conditioned bus. Our guide was terrific telling everyone the history of the area as we drove to the Mayan ruins. These ruins are a treasure to see. Our group had a very personal interpretation of the ruins thanks to our guide. We even sampled gum from the gum tree and were advised that Starbucks has started a cooperation with the locals on make a gum called Chicksa that will be available in the states mid 2016. At the end of the tour there is a gift shop full of items that the locals have made. Read Less

I'm only rating Very Good - although the ruines were interesting - the bus ride was 2 hours each way. We had read that information but after seeing the previous ruines, in hind site, we wish we had elected another activity - perhaps something else on the water (but that's just us). The bus was very comfortable & this tour guide had many, many pictures to show us and was extremely knowledgeable. He was interesting ... even for the long tour time! Read Less

Value was not great, but for about $50 per person we got a ride to the ruins and a guide to help us interpret what we saw. They did a good job. Bring bug spray and bug bite relief medicine, as the mosquitoes and ants and spiders were everywhere. Now we have seen it, so we won't go back again, but we would recommend it to anyone unfamiliar with the Mayan culture. Read Less

Costa Maya- Mayan Ruins- We decided to book directly with the ship on this excursion as it was the last port of call and the shortest allotted time in port. We took a nice bus to Chacchoben to see the ruins. On our way to the stop it began to rain. The rain was quite heavy when we arrived. We tried to purchase a rain coat but they sold out very quickly. We did end up purchasing garbage bags for 1.00 where we made ponchos out of them. We were given a tour of all of the ruins and provided with an amazing amount of history. Despite the rain this was a very cool excursion. Read Less

We decided to take the Chacchoben Mayan Ruins excursion - The Chacchoben Mayan Ruins are a fairly newly discovered set of ruins. Our guide Sergio was very helpful in explaining the life of the Mayans. Paths are uneven so watch where you are walking. There is another section of the ruins which I did not climb up to see. If you decide to climb these steps (which my husband did) you will see some pyramids and other structures. You will also see as you walk farther on what was considered to be the general living quarters. Read Less

This was a fantastic tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable about where we were going and gave us a brief history of the Island. When we got to the ruins, another guide took us through a forest to get to the ruins and he gave us the history of the ruins and how they were made. It was so amazing to go back in history and see how these pyramids were made basically by hand. The whole tour lasted 4 hours. On our way back to the ship, we stopped on the road, where ladies were selling fresh pineapples. What a nice treat to have having walked in very hot temperatures Highly recommended. Read Less

It was raining quite hard on the one hour trip to the ruins but the driver ensured us it would stop raining (and it did!). He was very knowledgable and gave us all an introduction to the Mayan civilisation and the history of the Chacchoben Ruins. The site is amazing..various buildings in different stages of being 'uncovered' but impressive in scale and a real insight into the way people lived in this area. My daughter loved climbing the ruins and exploring. We say monkeys and for any history and/or nature buff (flora and fauna) this is the one for you. Read Less

I would reccomend that if you are going to see any of the ruins (and why would you skip out on the ruins?) this is an excellent choice. AC bus ride to and from with a narrator (Carlos?). I took the last row of the bus as it has a middle seat and therefore I had unlimited legroom. The ride is fairly uneventful but it isn't like they can move the ruins closer to the port, right? The narrator gave us a bunch of information though so it keep everyone entertained (except our kids who had the benifit of headphones and MP3 layers.) We were all given a snack bag when we got on the bus, and it had some good choices in there so nobody starved, but remember, it is a snack, not a 5 star meal)As for the ruins themselves, we were told that in Cozumel you could no longer climb on the ruins. I don't know if that is true but, I did know the rules were not the same here. They do have some ropes to stop folks from climbing up past a certain point on some of them but, you will be climbing quite a bit anyway. some of the tour does have some steep climbing and while everyone in our tour group made it, some of the older or less athletic members were challanged a bit. Our bus narrator was also our tour guide and he really knew what he was talking about. There is also a small section to buy more of the same stuff you see other places. If you choose to skip a tour but still want to see the ruins, you would need to rent a car but admission tothe park was under $4.00 if you go on your own. There are tour guides there or you can just wonder around but know that if you go on your own, there are no signs telling you about what youa re seeing, like there often is in the US. Read Less
