Costa Maya Chacchoben Mayan Ruins Excursion Reviews

Deep in the Mexican jungle, Chacchoben is among the most famous ruins in Cozumel. These ancient pyramids have been excavated and restored, and now stand as testament to the myths and rituals of the mysterious Mayan peoples.

We did the deluxe package and others in our group did the regular. We were the first van there and they were the first bus (10 minutes later). Truthfully, so long as you are there within the first half hour or so, it really doesn’t matter if you do the deluxe or regular. We got there when no one else was there and have some really cool pictures. When we were leaving however, we could see the crowds forming and by then all of our pics would have been flooded with tourists. You can climb on some of the ruins, but you cannot go all the way to the top. You can go about 10 feet up on most of them. Some of the ruins were elevated courtyards that actually required some light climbing to even get to. The site is very nice (some spider monkeys were jumping around in the trees) and our guide was very knowledgeable and very passionate about the Mayan culture. I would recommend this tour. I know people who have now done this one and the Tulum ruin and they said this one was better. This is in the jungle and has a lot of tree covered areas (perhaps this could lead to mosquito issues in certain months) whereas I understand Tulum is far more wide open and takes all day. We were back from this excursion by about 12:30. Read Less

Stay clear off Toucan Tours. 1)Our guide’s English skills were very poor. This sucks since part of the experience is to learn about the history of the site. 2)The guide include an explanation of a killer tree which is very offensive towards women. 3)The guide asks everyone in the excursion to pay $1 as a donation to the local Mayan community which is not included in the price of the excursion. This is not true. I know Spanish and overheard the tour guides talking about how they would use this money to pay for part of the entrance fee to the ruins. 4)The tour guide on our way back had a cold and coughed without covering his mouth. I got sick the day after with a cold. 5) The drinks that were “included” did not have alcohol, even though they were supposed to and I complained to the server. 6) The food was cheap but not bad. However, it is obvious that they want to get you there so that they can upsell. This was an overall bad experience. I would not recommend this tour service to anyone. Read Less

The trip to the ruins and back was about 50 minutes each way from the port compound. It was as expected, I would remember inset repellent. We had an added stop billed as an all inclusive beach stop. This portion was not what I expected as our van pulled into a lot in the village with other vans. The lot seemed in a run down area but we were directed to wood tables with canoipies across from the main beach road. Many locals were there and we were visited by many vendors which all took no politely. It had a much more local feel that your more classic resort all inclusive Read Less

The last port during our cruise on the Norwegian Jade was at Costa Maya on the Yucatán peninsula of Mexico. The pier was large enough to hold 3 cruise ships. On this day it held us, a Royal Caribbean ship and a Regent ship. The long walk down the pier led to a beautiful shopping district that also included several restaurants, swimming pools and beach area. Typical of the other ports we've visited, prices were high but many vendors were willing to bargain. Our excursion to Chacchoben, Quintana Roo (booked through Shoretrips.com prior to our cruise) started with a long walk out of the shopping district and down some roads to their office. They claimed it was 4 blocks away but it seemed longer. Easy to find, it was about a 10-15 minute walk from the shops. There was a large number of other people who used the Native Choice company. There were several large tour buses and some vans outside their office. Check in was very quick and the wait before boarding the van was only about 10 minutes. The van was a little tight but comfortable and modern. Our tour consisted of about 14 people with a tour guide, David, who was full of knowledge about the Mayan culture and the history of the ruins in the area. The drive into the jungle took about an hour. The facility when we got there was already full of several other tours. The entry and buildings in the entrance are modest -- open air markets with several different vendors and small restrooms. The hike was really easy. Mostly across paved or at least cleared paths. We first came across a large stone temple and took pics while David gave us more info. The stairs of the temple were roped off so you could only climb on maybe the first step of two. There were still some great photo ops to be had. The path led us to other Mayan areas -- a town center and two more pyramids. According to our guide only about 40% of this particular Mayan city has been excavated. After that, we took the van to a modern Mayan village where we had lessons in making tortillas then had a buffet lunch consisting of rice, vegetables, stewed chicken and other items. It was a great experience to get to visit with the host family and other natives and share a meal with them. While the hike wasn't as long or as challenging as I had hoped, the excursion was an enjoyable experience and the tour company did a commendable job with all aspects of the day. Read Less
