McGuigan’s Winery - 1/3/2018 Great wine tasting & fabulous cheese tasting option right next door The winery is about a 40 minute drive from the port in Newcastle, NSW AU. We visited the port as a stop on a cruise and selected through the ship, Hunter Valley Wine Tour. The first stop was McGuigan’s and it was the highlight of the day. The tasting area is super spacious with seating and facilities for well over 100 people. Surrounded by casks, the school type seating allows the host to easily access everyone’s glasses and talk at the same time. The tasting itself was 13 wines, that’s right, 13! I’ve never attended a tasting at one winery that will put up that many wines, and many very good, limited supply wines to boot. Excellent value. After the wine portion, you simply walk a few steps next door to taste 5-6 different Aussie cheeses and, similar to the wine presentation, an interesting and informative discussion concerning them. We actually learned something - that old hard cheeses lose their lactose content so are safe after a period of time (aging) for lactose intolerant allergies. Both the wine & cheese spokespersons were knowledgable and friendly. Top notch stop on the tour. Wynwood Winery - 1/3/2018 Small but not to be missed A few minute drive from the giant, McGuigan’s, this is a much smaller winery but has a very innovative boutique quality about it. The tasting area is basically a few benches at the back of the wine store but the presenter was super knowledgable and engaging. Loved his anecdotes and his admonitions that everyone’s palate is different and picks up different characteristics is bang on (I always say don’t let someone tell you you shouldn’t like something) For wine lovers that desire and enjoy a little education along the way, really well done… We tasted eight wines including some limited supply, so really a very good value. Hope Winery - 1/3/2018 Part winery, Part Brewery, Part Concert Venue in a pastoral setting Imagine visiting a winery and seeing posters for the Stones, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen etc adorning the walls. The venue attracts some of the biggest groups & stars around the world. It’s basically a massive stage set up in a pastoral scene - massive lawns, beautiful vistas, all with a glass of fine wine or beer in hand. Yeah, that sounds OK, doesn’t it? The tasting was a little disappointing - 2 whites and 2 reds, all large production, lower end varietals but the presentation was well delivered and interesting in a big (but dark) tasting room adorned with massive casks (no longer being used) In keeping with the concert venue, celebrity visitors had signed the casks (Aussie PMs, John Cleese etc) Great wine store geared for high volume guests. This is a seriously large operation. Fun for sure - I would love to attend a concert with all these accoutrements Read Less

The wine tour was good, but finished badly when they took us to a small historic town where all the shops were closed and then most of us sat on a hot bus with no AC. They need to take this last stop off the tour.

Booked our own tour in New Castle. The Cheers Bus Guided Winery tour. 10 of us in a van for $140 AUD per couple plus whatever you spend for lunch. Picked up at dock for all day tour to 3 vineyards in Hunter Valley (Calais estate, Waverly estate, Leogate estate) and the Hunter Valdha distillery (multiple samples of flavored vodkas and Schnapps). We also visited the Smelly Deli for cheese and spread tasting and a chocolate store for tasting. Unhurried and no crowds. Lunch at Leogate was beautiful. We spent $40 AUD per couple for lunch. Soft shelled crab, roasted potatoes, spinach salad, cheese board and crusty bread were some of the menu items we ate. Lunch cost was not included in tour. Great tour. www.cheerbus.com. Talk to John. John drives the van and tells you all about the area. He lives there and has for many years, so he very knowledgeable. Read Less
