Lautoka Sightseeing Tour Excursion Reviews

To get a good feel for Lautoka -- Fiji's second-largest city -- a sightseeing tour is a good option. You'll enjoy stops at the marketplace, Hare Krishna Temple and the Veseisei village, among other historic and cultural sights.

Wouldn't recommend going to the stores that they seem to "drop" you at as they are crowded, overpriced and really not that interesting. Read Less

Maui We had booked a ship’s excursion (something we rarely do) because it looked interesting, and we wanted to venture beyond the town of Lahaina. RCL was also running a discount on excursions, so we received a discount. Iao Valley and Plantation was our chosen excursion. We first stopped at a local plantation that grows all sorts of tropical fruits, vegetables, coffee beans, flowers, and herbs. They provided a tram ride throughout the plantation. Then, we rode on to the Iao Valley which had previously been closed off because of hurricane damage. It is lush and very green with lovely walks and paths to view the Needle. Back in Lahaina, we bought dresses for our granddaughters and other souvenirs. Lautoka, Fiji The ship advertised roundtrip shuttle service to the town area. Instead, We picked up a taxi at the port and were glad we did! We hired a young taxi driver to take us the Garden of the Sleeping Giants and to town for souvenir shopping. We arrived earlier than the tour buses because of our decision to take a taxi and the crowds arrived about the time we departed. The gardens were was lovely and we walked throughout the circular pathways and the orchid collection. I would not recommend this tour to anyone with physical limitations as the ground is rocky and has irregular planks. At the end of the walk, visitors are given a cool tropical drink made with guava and pineapple juices. The driver then took us to Nadi (pronounced Nandi) to shop. We found good deals on clothing at Jacks. Know that you can’t take many items they sell into Australia (wooden items). The driver invited us to his home for tea and desserts and to meet his grandmother. We first stopped at a local market to observe the unique assortments of spices, fruits and vegetables, and workers making their baskets and crafts. We bought a small flower arrangement to give his grandmother. The countryside appears to be quite poor with animals such as cows and goats walking on or nearby the roads. We stopped at a small church and the only thing inside were plastic chairs. Our driver told us that McDonald’s is the “place to be seen” in the area. He is a college student studying business. A rather large three generation family lives in our driver’s small three bedroom house. The other rooms included a kitchen, dining room, living room, toilet and bathroom, all very small but nicely kept. His grandmother could not speak English but offered us tea and cookies, one made from a plant substance. We stopped at his mosque, but were not allowed to approach the entrance. His family was from Pakistan and has been in Fiji for decades. Fiji is experiencing a brewing conflict as the native Fijians rent the land to the nonnatives on a 99 year lease. The land will go back to the Fijian natives when that time comes. A review with photos of Lifou can be found on my website www.donnagawell.com Read Less

However, it didn't work out so badly as the people were all lovely and we got along. The tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly, and looked after us very well. There's nothing much in Latouka itself, and we were taken to the next town Nadi, which had a lot more going on. In all, Fiji was our preferred country in the South Pacific tour. Read Less

On the recommendation of good friends, we had pre-booked a driver for both stops in Fiji. He was a bit pricey, but we had a bad experience with a taxi driver last time we visited Suva, Fiji. Another couple from the ship joined us for a tour including an authentic village, an ornate Buddhist temple in Nadi, the Sleeping Giant orchid gardens, optional mud baths (it was too hot to even consider these!), the Denarau marina (shops and harbor), and general countryside driving. Our driver, Fasail, ordered Indian appetizers and sodas at the Buddhist temple and paid all entry fees for our AU$120 each (his price is on the high side, he admitted, since Fasail drives from Suva). He was very knowledgeable and provided excellent commentary as well as an air-conditioned van, most welcome in the heat and humidity. After the 4-hour tour, we ate a late lunch on the ship and walked 20 or 30 minutes to McDonald’s for very slow wifi (code given with purchase). Had we walked further into town, we found out later, we could have located a café with better wifi. A Fijian cultural group came aboard in the evening and danced and sang for us. Read Less
