Akureyri Akureyri Highlights Excursion Reviews

Akureyri is the second-largest town in Iceland, but it's still relatively small. A highlights tour allows cruisers to actually spend some time exploring its sights like the botanical gardens, Old Town and the geothermal pool.

Loved this Highlights of Northern Iceland tour. The geothermal vents and fumaroles were very interesting, but some of our party stayed in the bus due to the sulfuric smells. Midge Lake was aptly named as it was teeming with flies. People who bought mosquito net hats were very happy- beautiful and nice to see though. The big waterfall on the way back was the highlight. Same shape as Niagara Falls, but not as big, but very impressive nevertheless. A must-see. Read Less

Would have been better if the bus had more than one guide for 68 people.
Sail Date: June 2019
Would have been better if the bus had more than one guide for 68 people. She had little experience in crowd control thus most of the time , we didn't hear or see her. Waste of money for what we spent.

Botanical garden, large church.
Sail Date: July 2018
Botanical garden, large church. Not sure what else since we took a full day tour to Godafoss and Lake Myvatn using Taxi No 17. Great tour. Scenic cruising after leaving port was awesome too.

We did the Lake Myvatn Nature Bath tour with Traveling Viking. The sites were good but the mini bus was 45 minutes late, microphone did not work and air conditioning did not work. At the falls, spent 20 minutes watching them try to fix the microphone when we could have spent the time seeing the falls. The tour guide did not know when we needed to be back to the ship so we were rushed all day due to them being late... Read Less

We actually stopped at two more ports in Iceland - Isafjordur and Akureyri. Isafjordur is a small town in the Northwest of Iceland and I did a culinary tour there that was the highlight of my whole trip. We went about 30 minutes by bus to a tiny fishing village where the local guide toured us through the fish processing facility and then around the village to a fish drying hut and a hotel. At each stop we sampled cod in different varieties and learned about local life there. It was just a treat. Read Less

Our first impression of Iceland as a country was somewhat skewed in that we arrived on one of their warmest spring days ever. Whilst we were layered up, our guide and the locals came out in Tshirts and sandals despite the temperature only hitting 14degrees. The country side is needless to say awe inspiring. The critique I have is that we only had 3 brief stops, one at the Godafoss which was too brief, we passed by the most amazing landscapes where mountains and glaziers were mirrrored in icy lakes but no stops were made, we then visited The Old Farmhouse Laufas which was interesting and the final stop was the Botanic Gardens of Akureyri - please don't waste your time, looking at a bunch of dead sticks is not much fun. All in all I would not rate this excursion very highly Read Less
