It was neat but a bit over priced for what it was- and think the shops the guide recommended he got a kick back on- purchase a rug with him paid $50 more than same thing at port! Didn’t seem to have enough time either for both places.

I enjoyed the town but the rest of my family did not. Mostly could have mixed the mayan ruins with maybe a beach day.

Before the cruise w private researched excursions because we didn’t care for the excursions offered by Carnival. Lawson was willing to work the itinerary that we selected. The only bit of anxiety that we had was that the bus shuttle dropped us further from Lawson’s than we expected. Fortunately a local was able to point us in the right direction. Ralph was on the corner looking for us. We had a driver, Freddy Reyes, and guide, Diego Cabrera and a large air conditioned van waiting for us. We were on the road quite quickly. There was a cooler with sodas and water. We added our own water bottles to the cooler to keep them cool during the tour. Diego had our day all planned out. We drove into Merida and stopped along the way to look at architecture. We drove down to the center of town to see the cathedral, government building and House of Montejo, cultural museum and a historical style home (16C) of the founding father of Merida. The plaza was shaded, landscaped and quite alive with people. After the downtown walk, Freddy greeted us with cold wash cloths to wipe our faces. What a nice touch! Lunch was at an authentic Mayan cantina. We had pork tacos which ended up being meat piled on three small flour tortillas- that’s all. The waiter brought three kinds of sauce to put on the tacos. Lunch included a non-alcoholic drink. Next was a stop at an ice cream shop. I had a cup of mango. The color was right, but I didn’t taste much of a mango flavor. My husband had some other kind of fruit. It was a pretty good size serving. Our other request was to visit a Mayan ruin. They took us to Dzibilchaltun. We walked around the different ruins as Diego explained about them. At the back of the property there was a cenote (a natural spring0 where we cooled our feet for a few minutes. The tour of the ruins ended with a walk through the museum. Fortunately, Freddy drove us back to our ship so we didn’t have to take the shuttle. That was SO nice! We enjoyed the day and would highly recommend this company if you are in Progresso and want a private tour. Read Less

Eh, kind of acceptable except the guides were uninformative and unprepared for such a large group. (Other tour guides had microphones.) There was no way to hear our guide and we learned little. (The cathedral is worth seeing though.) Also, shopping? What shopping? There's an artisan market a couple blocks from the main plaza, but we had to find it on our own. But there was something similar in port in Cozumel with better selection. Overall, prices were better in Cozumel than Progreso, too. Read Less

Horrible!! We were sitting ducks, since my boyfriend was on a mobility scooter. We were separated from our group, since they went to a museum with stairs (no part of Mexico we found was disabled friendly), so we went looking for the bathrooms. There was a guy who knew English, so we asked where the bathrooms were. He chose to walk us there, then wanted paid for doing that. When we went the other way, he started calling us names and yelling at us in Spanish. Another man approached us, trying to sell us something. The first man saw this and starts yelling at him, telling him we are bad people. After we caught back up with the group, we learned others had similar bad experiences with the locals. Read Less

Progreso was another first for us on this cruise. We had read beforehand that Progreso was one of the worst ports that Carnival goes to. The port itself is nothing to call home about but all I can say is that upon arrival I was pleasantly surprised and we had a wonderful day. The water is not as pretty as Cozumel but it was nicer that some people have said. Also, there is a small shopping area on the pier where you can at least get off the ship and stretch your legs a little and buy a few souvenirs if you don't want to do anything else in this port. This was also the first time that we've booked an excursion through Carnival and it turned out to be a wonderful experience. We did the Merida Highlights tour with Carlos and I can't remember the other guides name. They were both very friendly and informative and I would recommend them as guides. The tour bus was also very nice and comfortable and the driver did a great job. I wouldn't recommend you brings children on this trip. My son (12) likes some history so he enjoyed this trip and my daughter (16) likes taking pictures of pretty buildings and places (and shopping) so she enjoyed the trip as well. Merida is a very historic and beautiful town, especially around the plaza where we spent most of the tour. The bus ride there is about 45 minutes. The guide tells you a lot about Progreso and Merida on the trip so it goes pretty quick. Once in the plaza, you exit the bus and do a walking tour which is about an hour and a half. Next, you are taken to a shopping area where you are giving 30-45 minutes to do some shopping and then you're given an hour or so to get some lunch and look around some more before getting back on the bus and making the trip back to Progreso. Some people may feel rushed on this trip and wish they would have had more time to explore on their own but we were satisfied and were very pleased. The excursion was only $39 for adults and $29 for the kids and we felt that was a fair deal for the day. I would also recommend this excursion for your day in Progreso. Oh, and one more thing. If you do this excursion there is a restaurant in Merida called Main St. Restaurant and Bar. It was a nice place with outside seating in a nice setting. They speak English and take dollars so I would also recommend them. Read Less

Great excursion! We boarded a bus for Merida (about 45 minutes away). We toured the city center, went into the cathedral (2nd oldest in the Western Hemisphere & definitely not to be missed!). Then we proceeded to a small hotel and in a courtyard area made three different salsas. After eating those, (and using our 3 free drink tickets, LOL!) we moved to another courtyard where we were taught the basic Salsa dance steps & laughed a lot. Christina, our tour guide, was truly phenomenal! Highly recommend this excursion. Read Less
