FANTASTIC!!!! 7 1/2 hour day but goes by quickly, The catamaran is great, comfortable - you learn a lot. Made it to the South Sawyer Glacier (almost in the Yukon!) - saw it calving - Caribbean blue waters, blue ice floats, Sea Lions, bald eagles, waterfalls and cascades - it was the coldest part of our trip (not freezing, but glad to have a puff jacket, light fleece hat and gloves) - they served hot cocoa, coffee, tea and a nice box lunch (if you are vegetarian, make sure to request that before hand with the ship and they will accomodate) Read Less

Once on the boat (not a catamaran), an excellent excursion - wish they were clearer on how to meet them as you left the ship. Per their instructions on their confirmation email, we rushed to get off the ship at their directed time, only to not be met by their staff - wasted time looking for them, and I had to call them - a proactive call from them would have sufficed. This tour was actually not in Juneau but on the 3rd day of the cruise and is NOT TO BE MISSED!! The weather was perfect with blue skies and a pleasant temperature. There was a comfortable indoor sitting and viewing area surrounded by windows as well as an open deck upstairs. As we drew away from the Legend, the catamaran took us up the fjord where we saw many bald eagles flying past us and in trees on both shores. Initially, the steep slopes were densely forested with fir trees, but as we motored further into that Alaskan wilderness, only scrubby brush and rocks lined the narrow waterway. We saw cascades, waterfalls, harbor seals, and a black bear on the bank who seemed to be unbothered as we cruised close to see him. The boat motored near many blue icebergs and other ice floes. We got very close to the gorgeous Ice Falls, one of 2 true waterfalls in the Fjord. The pilot backed the boat into the “nook,” a small cascade-carved cove where we could see beautiful wildflowers. We cruised past Sawyer Island where, 200 years ago, the 2 Sawyer glaciers were connected as one. The captain informed us that he always maintained a wide distance (100-500 yards) from marine mammals, but we went right over the top of one seal, whom we assume the captain didn’t see. We also scraped and went over numerous floating pieces of ice (mini bergs) which was disconcerting. (Since the boat was a catamaran, no seals or icebergs were harmed.) We navigated the icy waters, past many harbor seals and their pups upon the bergs, to get within a quarter-mile of the Sawyer tide glacier. We saw it calve repeatedly, with huge chunks as well as small pieces falling into the water. The visible face of the glacier is a ½ mile wide and 200 feet high, but the tour guide assured us that the face actually extended 900 feet below the surface. We left the iceberg-filled area to visit the smaller arm of the fjord and North Sawyer glacier (much smaller and less active). All too soon, we were taken back to the Legend so another tour group could board. Read Less

We were up early on a lovely clear morning to have a full breakfast delivered to our room at 6:00am. Each day you can fill out your choices and hang the form on your door the night before. We ate on the balcony as we approached Tracy Arm Fjord. The ship television was broadcasting commentary by the ship naturalist as we entered. Unfortunately, we missed some of the scenery going in as we were assembled and waiting in the Grand Epernay for the catamaran from 7:15 to around 7:45. Once the couple of hundred of us were on board the smaller ship, the Solstice left us behind and proceeded to Juneau. We were able to navigate through the icebergs to within ¼ mile of the Dawes Glacier. The majority of the glacier was a brilliant blue in the sunlight. We saw three calving portions of the glacier hit the water as well as some otters and porpoise in the calm waters. After 45 minutes or so, the catamaran left the glacier area and sailed for two hours back to the Solstice docked in Juneau. During that two hours, we got up close looks at a bus sized iceberg, a couple of glacier in the distance and several waterfalls. There were free hot chocolate, coffee and donut holes available throughout the trip. You could also purchase hamburgers, reindeer dogs ($6) and drinks. I’d also give this excursion a 5-star rating. We don’t know how far the Captain was able to take the Solstice into Tracy Arm Fjord but seeing the glacier up close was worth the extra money. Read Less

this tour you can only book via the cruise lines as you depart and arrive back at the ship directly, after the ship lefts Juenau. We got to sail deep into the glaciers, and we saw two whales enroute blowing air, lots of seals sleeping or relaxing on ice and a direct close-up views of the Tracy Arm glaciers, which the cruise ship would not reach, due to its narrow-channels and large icebergs. We were very lucky on this one as weather was fantastic, very sunny and we saw and heard 5 large wall-like chunks of ice fall off from the glaciers, which created the waves and also made for fantastic photos and screams of excitement from people on the boat. Book this early as it was full before embarkation. Read Less

Do this tour. Period, end of story. You need to be on ship before 1 PM. You board the catamaran from the ship, and then it sails ahead of the cruise ship for hours. It is a long trip but so worth it. We saw orcas, humpbacks, eagles, and brown bears. The naturalist would point them out and unlike the cruise ship, was able to slow down, redirect, or stop as nature revealed itself. We then went much closer to the glacier the cruise ship could ever go. Simply amazing. You then go back to the ship, and board ship-to-ship at sea. Bang for the buck an amazing tour and best of all, extends your "Juneau" time which you don't get enough of. Read Less

Guide was good. However, yet again in spite of them being warned about myself and another tourist needing gluten diet, there was nothing. There were free snacks, none GF and I had to buy a packet of crisps as we were over 5 hours on the trip and there was nothing else I could eat apart from the small packed lunch which they then removed a third of as that was a pack of wheat biscuits. Was finally offered a cup of dried salmon when it was opened to put on biscuits for the rest of group, to encourage them to buy packes of it. It is apparently illegal to take food off the boat so that wasn't an option. Read Less
