My 4 yrs of high school Spanish paid off as we were able to locate a market full of shoe stores and make our purchases and safely return to the ship. Read Less

A boring, long ride from the port of Progresso to Merida. The tour guide was funny but not as brilliant as the pervious tour guides. Merida City was a big surprise, having ample modern boulevards (Boulevard de Paseo de Montego) lined with large elaborate homes, in fact a city of 2 million people. Very clean and orderly with many old, well kept houses, fantastic central plaza and hand made monument de la Patria. Also a very large Cathedral built in 1774. Had some time to enjoy a great local beer at a tavern of the many you can find around the Cathedral. Except for the long, back and forth ride, it was a very enjoyable tour. Read Less

The bus is not air conditioned but the tour is worth taking. Our guide on the bus didn't seem to notice that there were children on board and alot of his jokes and comments were inappropriate for children. He should have provided more cultural history than pointing out houses of his friends. Other than that, it was interesting. Read Less

We got a taxi to drive us to us to Merida. It cost us $110 round trip. Our driver Gerardo was very informative and attentive. We picked up a guide, Miguel who showed us around the square and some of the local historical buildings, some shops and then to a place to eat. It became obvious that the driver, and the guide worked with the souveneir shop and the restaurant but it was no big deal; they weren't trying to scam us, just trying make a living. With the tips for the guide, the driver and the food we spent around $220. Had we taken a ship sponsored excursion we would have paid over $400 for our group of eight. Read Less

We did not book a tour. We just walked off the ship to see what we could see- for free :-). There was some shopping just off the ship, but not a lot. Just past the shops was where all the busses were. We walked around and noticed a sign that they offered a FREE bus ride into town. The cruise port was over a mile out from town, and un-walkable. So, we took the free bus ride. When the bus pulled into the bus station, the guide told us that this same company offed $9 tour of the city. So, because it just looked like more of the same shopping near there, we decided to take the tour. The driver and guide were very friendly! The guide kept our attention with nice stories and jokes. But, the town is a DUMP!! There was trash everywhere!!! It was like a guided tour of a land fill! I have been to many poor islands and countries. But, none that just threw their trash out on the ground. Honestly, it wasn't the fact that they are poor that made it bad.... I understand poor, I understand run down, but trash EVERYWHERE - Yuck! It wouldn't be so bad if they would pick up the trash! But, the tour guide and driver were great! Read Less

Progresso is a port town. Not much of anything to see. At the very least take a taxi to the end of the pier where there were places to hang out on the beaches there-jet ski, sun bathing, food, drink, etc. The girls snorkeled at the caves without us and left and arrived back on the ship safely. My wife and I didn't know what to do and we got talked into taking an unscheduled tour bus ride to Merida for the afternoon. The bus was old and dirty but the AC worked and the tour guide was very pleasant. There were about 40 of us from the cruise on this impromptu tour. Umm, the cathedral was nice to see although it was closed but otherwise not much to see or do around Merida. I would not recommend Merida. If anything, take a taxi to the end of the pier where there are things happening on the beach right off of the pier. Read Less
