Ushuaia (Tierra del Fuego) Train to the End of the World Excursion Reviews

Take this replica of a steam-driven "prison train" though Tierra del Fuego National Park and experience what the prisoners felt when they were transported to the region a hundred years ago.

This was something else.
Sail Date: March 2019
This was something else. The train at the end of the world, was comfortable and we were given an historic lecture along the way. It did rain and snow a little but not much.

A little chaotic initially as we waited and waited for 2 missing passengers, only to find they were there but hadn't handed their tickets in! We took a scenic boat trip to catch a bus which took us to the train ....it was a lovely little train, which stopped at a waterfall for pictures (not much to see) then onto the bus for a drive round the national park. The history of the prisoners who built the tracks was fascinating. You really did feel you were at the end of the world! Read Less

Ushuaia (tendering port). The world’s most southerly city is located in a beautiful setting between the ocean and a range of snow-capped peaks. We took an excursion on the Train-At-The-End-Of-The-World, and enjoyed ourselves immensely. This railway was built as a logging line by convict labour at a time when Ushuaia was a penal colony. It is narrow gauge (50 cm) line using reproductions of the original steam locos to haul trains on 7 miles of track through a variety of scenery. TIP: we suggest this excursion is a MUST for rail enthusiasts of all ages, and it was VERY popular with passengers from our ship. After our train ride our excursion took us to the Tierra del Fuego National Park. This is an interesting place, but the parking lot is crammed with taxis, coaches and private cars so you need to exercise extreme care when walking. TIP: there is a Post Office here from which you can mail cards or letters from the bottom of the world; however, it does tend to get VERY crowded. Read Less

Did not really enjoy Ushuaia itself. Quite dirty and run down. Lots of tourist shops which were quite interesting. Went on the train in the national park. Very interesting to hear about the original convict population and all the trees they cut down which haven't regrown! We did think this was an expensive trip for what was basically a train ride and a coach trip round Ushuaia and all the "end of the world" sites. Easy to get to though as we just walked off the ship. Beware of the roads - no traffic lights or crossing points. Read Less

The bus ride narrative was lacking in anything of interest. The train ride was tedious through not very interesting scenery with a narrative solely devoted to the prison and prisoners who built the railroad. Not a thing about the park through which we were riding. It was an automated message. No time was allotted to see the train station or the shop. We went to one scenic overlook with way too many buses and spent way too long. I would not recommend this excursion to anyone. This was a nice little town with good shops at the end of the pier.
