Way more than Gentoo. There are about a dozen Kings and lots of Magellanic. Friendly and caring staff. Much shorter drive than others. Close to penguins who do interact. Adorable. Included cream tea with hand-baked goodies and served on china in a sit-down inside room. Lovely. Back to the ship for lunch! Others who took this excursion loved it also. No complaints I heard. If I returned, I would choose this excursion again. Read Less

Not as far as the other longer cove. We saw gentoo and King. Good snacks and tea afteward. Jeeps on the bluffs were almost ridiculous on the bumps. You would think the owners would be able to pave the road for all the tourists.

Port Stanley (tendering port) Ships the size of the Zaandam are too large to enter Stanley Harbour, so getting ashore requires a long tender ride (15-20 minutes depending on sea conditions). We were very lucky because the day we arrived brought unusually warm, sunny conditions and a relatively calm sea. TIP: you can’t actually see your ship from Port Stanley – there is a spit of land in the way. On very windy days, you may not be able to go ashore. We took an excursion to see Joe’s Gentoo penguins at their nesting colony. This is a short trip (2.5 hours), but it does require a short stretch of off-road travel in Land-Rovers. These are not uncomfortable, but you get bumped around a bit, something to consider if you suffer from back trouble. Other excursions to see other penguin species take much longer and involve more off-roading. Read Less

This was an excellent shore excursion with a bus ride with excellent guide and then a 4x4 off road drive into the far. There were many penguins up close and rangers to answer questions. A generous tea was served. The museum and shop had excellent crafts. I would have liked to spend at least another half hour here. Stanley is a small town with a good selection of souvenirs, many good handcrafted items. It was an easy walk from the tender pier. Read Less

We explored the small city before our tour started. We were driven to a spot where the four of us were met by our 4 wheel driver to take us out to the beach area. It was a blast going over the very bumpy fields to get there. The winds were very strong at the beach. It was filled with penguins. They also have 6 pairs of King penguins. We saw them feeding the new chicks. The other babies were several months old and covered in downy feathers. There is a naturalist available to answer questions. It was fantastic. You are then able to walk to the shop at Bluff Cove and have tea and cakes, cookies, etc. It is mouth watering array of sweets and is included. The gift shop has some beautiful items to purchase (which we did) Afterwards, you meet your driver for the fun ride back to the pier. Read Less

I have been on 42 cruises and this excursion was one of my favorites. We took a tender to shore. Took a bus 15 miles. Took a 4 x 4 for 20 very bumpy minutes. The 4x4's are owned by the local people. They are kind and not hotrods. Because the terrain is so bad, they take their time. But it is worth it. The Gentoo rookery was interesting but my favorite was the King penguins. Also, you go to a trailer unit that is a cafe. The ladies of the town have made delicious desserts for your partaking with tea and coffee. All included in the price. Also a gift shop and penguin jewelry is available. Read Less

Absolutely fabulous. Service over and above the call of duty. 140mph winds had destroyed the tea house the night before we arrived so we spent more time seeing the penguins. One of our party was disabled (not able to use his legs at all) and the group literally lifted him out of one car into another and drove him right to the penguins since he could not stand on the uneven peat. A short time in Stanley where I bought some beautiful hand woven yarn. Read Less

I also described this with the penguin photos I posted. This tour is a family run operation. They meet you at the ship with a mini-bus that carries 16 people. You are driven maybe 10 miles out of Port Stanley, passing by many of the mountains/hills that saw battles during the Falkland Islands war. You then meet up with 4-wheel drive range rovers that each take 4 people. You head out cross-crountry through the sheep ranch. There are no roads. Even crossed a small river. We soon arrived down at the cove and the penguin rookery. There are both Gentoo and King penguins here as you can see in my photos. You had about an hour to walk around and observe the penguins, then make your way over a small rise and down to the beach where they had a small museum and cosy tea room. In the tea room you had a large selection of home baked cookies, cakes, and biscuits. Along with your choice of coffee, tea, or coco. All complimentary as part of the tour. We also each received a well produced booklet with lots of photos that tell you all about the family, their sheep ranch, and the penguin rookery. The absolutely best excursion I had on the entire cruise. Read Less
