We were a group of 14 that booked a walking food tour of Old San Juan for our day on the island. We arrived at the port around 8:00 island time and had to meet our tour guide at Plaza del Quinto Centenario at 9:00 island time. The walk from the ship was about 20 minutes and mostly uphill. We arrived and it was easy to find our guide Pablo as he had the Orange Umbrella. Pablo was great! He was friendly, informative, funny and genuine.
We started our day at Cafe Don Ruiz where each of us was treated to a Cafe Latte and Mayorca (sweet bread with ham and Swiss cheese and sprinkled with powdered sugar). It was a great breakfast and start. Pablo told us all about the history of the building (and old military barracks) and so much more. From there we headed out to see and learn about El Morro, the shoreline and the cemetary by the sea! From there we headed to La Tortuga Panderia for Quesitos. Quesitos are amazing sweet pastries with a sweet cream cheese filling. They were small but the perfect bite. We left La Tortiga and headed down towards La Forteleza and the Plaza del Armas. From there we stopped at Hecho en Cases for Mofongo with Chicken in Garlic Sauce! It was AMAZING! From there we were off to Deaverdura for Fresh Fruit Juices and Rum and Pernil with Rice and Beans. Juice options that day were Guanabana (Soursop), Caribbean Cherry, Tamarind or Guava. We left Deaverdura and headed to our bonus stop, Caldera Cafe for a Puerto Rican holiday treat... Coquito! It was strong but good. After our extra stop, we headed down to our last stop of the tour Senor Paleta for Paletas (ice cream). There was a huge variety of flavors and everyone loved what they got.
This tour was supposed to be 3 hours, but I think ours was actually closer to 4 (not that any of us minded as we were having a great time). We had a great time, learned a ton about Puerto Rico and Old San Juan, ate lots of yummy food and met an amazing tour guide! All together it was a great day and a tour I would recommend to anyone!
