San Juan Bioluminescent Bay Kayaking Excursion Reviews

Enjoy a kayak adventure to Laguna Grande, one of the only five year round bioluminescent lagoons in the world.

This was a cool experience! It's a long ride to get there, and they stop at a McDonald's. I wish they had specified that in the description, cause the excursion was from 4:15-9:45, so we were all stressed about when/what to eat. You kayak through a narrow canal to get to a lagoon. We got there a bit early, so had to wait till it got dark. After a few minutes, we had to head back, so wish we had a bit more time once it was dark. But, it was difficult to get back since it was dark, and you really can't see anything in the canal. We were following the kayak in front of us, then another kayak bumped into us, and we had to stop. Once we got going again, the kayaks in front of us were gone, so we had to fumble our way through. Once we hit the bay, we really didn't know which way to go, since there was no one around. It would be nice if a guide was stationed there to direct people. Overall, a cool experience! Read Less

All bookings prior to cruise were put on a 3;00 time which was too early. Didn't get dark until we were on our way back. They lined up our kayaks and threw a tarp over us three different times. We finally could see a faint spark in the water and then we had to leave. A second tour was added and they were given the later time. Holland wouldn't let me review this excursion as they knew I was not satisfied. Very disappointing. Read Less

It was like something right out of Pirates of the Caribbean, kayaking through the mangrove passageway in the dark! However, because we went on a night with a nearly full moon, we couldn't see the bioluminescence. The guide brought a huge tarp, which about 10 kayaks huddled under in order to block out the moonlight. Then we saw the magical luminescence under the water. It's about an hour's drive from San Juan. We stayed in SJ for 2 nights after a cruise. This isn't the best time of the year to do the bioluminescent bay trip, as it's better in warmer weather. There had also been rain, which diminishes the luminescence. We booked with Kayaking Puerto Rico. the only hiccup was parking. They gave us no instruction as to where to park, and it's a very busy area. The woman signing us in recommended we move our rental car, but the place she was telling me to move it too was a "no parking" zone, and I didn't want to risk it. She said the car could get broken into where I had parked. I just left the car unlocked with nothing in it. I've found that's the the best way to keep your car from getting broken into. Anyway, not great conditions, but very little moonlight, so it was really dark. Kayaking through a channel under mangroves with a tiny light on the kayak in front of you is a blast. Very serene, just listening to the sounds of the frogs and birds in the woods. My wife and I really enjoyed it. I can't wait to go back in the summer and try it when conditions are better. And it isn't terribly expensive. Read Less

This was an amazing tour. It was about 9 hours but we were taken on a short driving tour of Old San Juan, and of the country side near the rainforest, ate dinner at a great restaurant, meet great people, hopped on a charter boat and took a wonderful boat ride over to Vieques to Kayak the REAL Bio bay! Hopped in a van for an informative tour of the island and it's sad military history and info on the tree of life . We stopped at a beach and enjoyed the beautiful area, including more history and feed the horses that run wild on the island. We Kayaked in glass bottom Kayaks and it was absolutely amazing. A dream come true, to see it. Then back to the boat for the ride back over to the mainland, and a stop at the Marina to freshen up, then van ride back to Old San Juan. They have several pick up locations all over San Juan. I highly suggest this tour. It is currently the only tour that will pick you up in San Juan , take you to vieques for the TRUE Biobay and bring you back in the same day. You no longer have to stay on Vieques. It was fabulous and the tour guides were wonderful and full of historical information. Hector will keep you laughing. They also provided great sandwiches and drinks after the Kayaking. And drinks were available throughout the entire boat trip, coming and going back. If you want to have a wonderful trip to the Bio bay, but not stay overnight on Vieques,BOOK this one! Read Less

The bio luminescent bay was a thrill, the guide was great. When we were there in 2007, only 1 power boat went there per day for the disabled but now they allow the fully able bodied to ride several power boats per day and they practically run over the kayaks and shine bright lights in your eyes blinding you. This will ruin the area according to the guide we had in 2007. Some tours opposite us used no passive lighting also which ruined the view of the glowing water. San Juan in general seems to have a new wealth in many areas since 2007 but they still have poor, starving dogs around and for that reason I won't be back. I don't like that cruelty. Our bus guide told us that locals deliberately dump dogs they don't want on the beach to die and no one does anything about it. There are poor people there too but there is help for them, we saw Salvation Army and other missions but no help for the dogs. Shame on San Juan! it broke my heart. Read Less
