Progreso Chichen Itza Excursion Reviews

Chichen Itza city was once the most important capital city of the Mayan area. Due to its beauty and singularity, it is a cultural referent for Mexicans and a symbol of national and indigenous identity.
The ruins get 5 stars.

The ruins get 5 stars. The lack of information about the minimal about of time allowed at the ruins before having to return to the ship was lacking. We will be back, and we plan on spending a few days.

Almost perfect.

Almost perfect. Did not realize the buffet did not include drinks at all and also was cash only. This put us a little tight on cash for the trip and had to skip souveniers.

First of all, there is nothing to do in Progresso. The dock is about 2 or 3 miles long and you have to take a bus just to get to town. So you want to take some type of excursion. We had really wanted to see Chichen Itza. It was a bit of a let down. It takes over two hours to get out to the ruin (there is a bathroom on the bus). There are a lot of tourists!!!! and dozens of buses. And a lot of vendors along every walk way inside the site. Down both sides! They yell at you buy something. Mostly the same stuff at every table. Then in the main site, they had a couple thousand folding chairs and a large stage setup for an upcoming concert. So, you have to angle your photos to get a good photo. The other thing was umbrellas. Everyone was carrying them for sun protection. So a lot my photos have pink and yellow umbrellas in them. They don't let you climb them anymore. Someone fell off one a few years ago. The tour covered about half the site in two hours. They give you about 30 minutes on your own. Then back to the bus. A boxed lunch (not very good) for the two hour ride back to the ship. Glad that we got to see it in person but not as good as we hoped. Lamanai in Belize was so much better. Read Less

We booked this excursion through Expedia thinking that we wouldn't have any problems. Unfortunately, when we got off the boat our printed instructions were completely different than what actually happened. The boat is 3 miles from the shore so you have to first walk through a shopping area, find a bus, take the bus to the city, and THEN get to your tour group from there. We figured it out but were very stressed worrying about missing our trip. Once we got to our group, everything was great. Our tour guide was an adorable little Mexican guy who was probably 80 years old but still truckin'. He was very knowledgable and made everyone feel comfortable. Our group was very small -- only 8 people including ourselves and the guide. Chitchen Itza was about 2 hours away, so be prepared to stay in the van for a while there and back. The ruins themselves were super cool to see in person. It definitely made the long drive and confusion worth it! Read Less

Went to see the Mayan Ruins Chichen Itza/Senote and it did not disappoint. We risked it and booked ours after we got off the ship. We got off about 8am and was on the bus to the ruins by 9am. Made it back by 340pm. Ship said by 4, but left at 6pm. We saved about $30 per person doing it this way. The ruins are beautiful and our guide took care of everything and even though we were rushed due to time constraints of the travel to and from we still got everything in and he gave a lot of the history to the area and the ruins themselves. It was hot though (November) as there is NO SHADE out by the ruins so put your sunscreen on and bring a hat/something to cover your neck and or long sleeve UPF shirt (google it) to cover your skin if you dont want to get sunburned. If you are really sensitive to the sun I recommend full cover and BRING A GOOD UMBRELLA with you. You can rent or buy them but the quality is hit or miss. The merchants sell hats and such so if you forget you can buy one locally. Haggle the price down of course. I also recommend before you leave for your cruise search youtube for videos and the web for info on the sites and print it out/load PDF on your tablet/phone so you can get the info before you get out to the ruins and have a better sense of things. Perfect reading on the bus ride out which is about 1.5 - 2 hours each way. Read Less

Chichen Itza is incredible and worth the tour price. The tour arrangements were poor. We were led to believe that the two hour coach trip from the Port of Progreso would be broken up with a comfort stop. This comfort stop turned out to be one of those awful commercial, money grabbing tourist traps that was just five minutes drive from Chichen Itza itself. So we did just about the full two hour journey with no stops at all. The reason being that our comfort stop was at a so called "Mayan Cultural Village" This is where the tour company undoubtedly get some form of financial sweetener for offloading it's cargo of walking dollar bills (tourists like us) to be hassled and pressured into buying the usual array of tourist tat. Needless to say - I bought nothing and would not do so on principle. Read Less

I give this tour only average. I have always wanted to go to Chichen Itza, its a UNESCO site, and one of the 7 wonders of the modern world. But because our tour guide was so anti venders and anti sales of fake products, he spent more time talking about his views, than wandering around the site. He could have given us all this information on the bus while we were going there, and allowed for more time to wander around once we got there with information, but he talked about three buildings, and that was it. I don't really feel that I had the best experience there. Maybe it was our guide? Maybe that it is 5 hours of travel for two hours of being there. Not sure, but I think that the guide could have spent less time venting, and more time educating, and touring. If you decide to take this tour, read up on the temples before you get there. The Temple of Skulls is fantastic, but our guide didn't mention it at all. So when we did get 30 minutes on our own, I did head there with my camera. Read Less

This is a long excursion but a good one to take if you are not interested in hanging out at the beach. There did not seem to be a lot to do in Progreso. The bus ride to the ruins is about 2 hours and 10 minutes with a 20 minute added stop at a souvenir stand where you can barter (I recommend waiting until you get to the ruins where you can barter and get better deals). After leaving this stop you are given a bagged lunch (ham and cheese sandwich, chips, an apple, and bottled water). You get a little under 2 hours at the ruins but that seemed like just the right amount of time to see all the sites and do a little bartering. Read Less

My description can be found in my evaluation of the Elation. The vendors covering this sacred site have ruined it. I went there for a historical tour, not a flea market. I felt guilty for not buying more as these people seemed so desperate to sell something. But most vendors had the same stuff, and I just wasn't there to buy masks or t-shirts. I've enjoyed my visits to other ruins much more. Chichen Itza was a bucket list visit I had really looked forward to, and it just didn't live up to my expectations. Read Less
