We couldn't believe how close you could get to the birds, and the scenery was magnificent.

We couldn't believe how close you could get to the birds, and the scenery was magnificent. The lunch that the tour company set out for us was also as good as or better than what the ship provided.

We really don't think there are enough superlatives for this excursion. Our tour guide, Graham, was a font of information and a very good driver. We travelled, via 4 wheel drive, across a landscape that can only be called spectacular. The violence of the earthquake that hit the region in 1931 is still visible in the cliffs along Hawkes Bay and the surrounding hills. Our goal was the Gannet colony at Cape Kidnapper. Whilst we did not visit at the height of the season, there were still hundreds of birds that showed not an ounce of interest in us, but were a source of fascination for we tourists. Our tour was topped off with a delicious, home cooked, afternoon tea, followed by a short tour of Napier. Highly recommended. Read Less

This drive along Hawkes Bay followed by visiting a mainland Australasian Gannet colon at Kape Kidnappers was amazing. I have dragged my husband on dozens of nature tours, and he says this is the best one ever. Even the photos on our iPhones look amazing. Gannets are large seabirds related to boobies, and are nesting during December-March. When we visited in December, some were still incubating eggs, but many of the chicks were about half size. There were great opportunities to observe mating and feeding behavior. We slo got to learn about the land management. We had a fancy homemade tea at the tour operators base before returning to the ship. Read Less
