Martinique Rum Distillery Excursion Reviews

Stop at the rum distillery for a visit to taste the Agricol rum, made from sugar-cane juice, of Martinique.

Martinique is very built up, and has a lovely infrastructure. We were able to get any number of provisions we needed right within walking distance of the cruise ship dock. We needed pain meds and a knee sock. We found both easily. The tour was wonderful and covered lots of really great history. They took us through the rainforest, the ruins, the volcanology museum, and Fort De France. I loved it! Read Less

Drove around and saw some of the island, and went to DePaz Rum Distillery. It was okay. After the distillery tour, it rained and we continued to make stops in the rain. Stops which most people chose to skip and stayed on the bus. Old people, wet cobblestones and wet stairs dont mix well. Distillery wasnt very generous with their rum samples. I bought some Rhum Bonbons to bring home. Theyre great. Had we known that, we would have bought 8 bags but we didnt know. Even though its just hard candy, there were no samples for us to try. Distillery tour wasn't that good as we often couldnt hear our Tour Guide; she kept losing guests; attention; couldnt keep the group together. Read Less

We booked the Authentic Tour of Southern Martinique, through Viator, and the tour was conducted by Beyond The Beach. This tour was excellent: We explored Southern Martinique, visiting a shopping village, a beach, Le Diamant, a famous slave memorial, a playground, and the Trois Rivieres rum distillery, with lots of beautiful scenery along the way, including driving through the town in which Empress Josephine de Beauharnais, the first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, was born. Yes, all that within a day, and we got back to the ship well before it would set sail. Read Less

The rum distillery tour was over-crowded (it looked like 5 separate tour groups from different ships converged at once). We were let to roam loose in the historic distillery area with no narration, and minimal written information. There wasn't enough information here to not include some form of narration. The tasting room was a mob scene. There was no space to actually get to the counter and they were trying to accommodate guests of 3 different languages across 5 different groups. The tasting was rushed, and very little information was given about the available rums. Because of the crowds and delays the excursion ran hours late. We went out into fort-de-france for lunch when we got back. Wish we'd just roamed the city, it was very nice, felt like a normal European city. (make sure you have a French phrase book) Read Less

Martinique is very expensive, generally dirty, and there is not a lot to see in the north part of the island (all we had time for as the ship was in dock for such a tiny amount of time). We did enjoy Neissen's distillery though - off the beaten path, so we had a private tour and bought some product. The Balata church (an alleged top 10 sight) is a waste of time - in need of significant restoration. Read Less

We had the St. Pierre and rum distillery tour. There was no distillery tour. You just walked around and read signs. The gift shop was great, though. The description said we'd visit a volcanic area. That was not what I expected. Mainly the guide said on the bus: "There's the volcano." We did visit ruins from the eruption in St. Pierre. The drive there was long and mountainous. Our guide did not seem very experienced and did not provide all the needed info. I am thinking Martinique does not have the infrastructure to provide great tours. Read Less

A decent tour, the distillery was ok I guess (seen one, seen 'em all), but the actual drive in the rain forest and later visit to St-Pierre were great. Walking the streets of St-Pierre was magical. After the tour we walked around the streets of Fort de France. Some of the Americans in my group were a little insulted the locals did not speak english and the local shops only accepted Euros. I had to explain that Martinique is not some poor third world island, but an actual department of France (as Hawaii is a US state). I did translate for them (I'm French Canadian). Read Less
