Barb, our friend from the 2017 transatlantic booked this tour, as she did three other tours that we took on the cruise. I had recommended Monica’s Tours, since we had used them in 2011 and they were excellent. Our tour guide was good and advised us that we could see a number of places. Of course, we didn’t have time to do it all. The day we were in port turned out to be a local holiday, which meant heavier traffic than normal. That was unfortunate, since we probably could have seen more on a normal day. We were taken to two main squares in downtown Lima, the second being the Plaza de Armas. It was a huge square and the cathedral was on the square. Just prior to arriving at that square, we walked through a street with some interesting building frontages and balconies. The next place on the tour was a monastery with catacombs that we had seen in 2011, so Ginny and I asked to meet the group later, so we could visit the cathedral. We had not seen the cathedral. Pizarro, the Spanish conqueror of Peru was buried in the cathedral. The massive building was filled with valuable art. After spending about an hour at the cathedral, we walked to the Monastery to meet our tour. There was a huge long line of local people waiting to enter the Monastery, so we waited outside the entrance of the catacombs as instructed and ran into Monica, the owner of the tour company. She remembered Ginny and I from 2011. She gave us a couple of small gifts, as she did last time we were in Lima. Our next stop was to visit an ancient pyramid, predating the Incas. The pyramid grounds were in the direction of Miraflores, the more upscale area of Lima. Our group decided to skip lunch in order to spend more time touring. We walked up the pyramid while our guide explained details about the civilization that built it. There was a small museum that we visited as well. After the pyramid, we found a scenic seashore at Miraflores with a nice park. Driving around the city was slow due to the traffic and after the seashore, we heading back to the port to make the ship on time. It is worth mentioning that we found the cuisine in Peru to be absolutely fantastic. Peruvian food can match up to the best in the World, even French and Italian. Read Less

For independent excursions, be warned that traveling the five minutes from the ship to the port gate is extremely difficult due to the supposedly mandatory, 1.5-hour circuit that Princess bus shuttles must take into the Lima city center, further complicated by intense traffic and gridlock within Lima. There were no dedicated port gate shuttles in place when the Star Princess was at Callao. The city tour itself, with stops including the Basilica and Convent of San Francisco and its catacombs, Plaza Mayor, Huaca Pucllana, Morro Solar, and Barranco was very interesting in learning about the history of Lima while getting a glimpse of all its different manifestations. As the Star Princess is berthed in a commercial container port, access is limited. Luckily the tour buses for Princess depart by the ship so 41 of us boarded the same bus. Our driver's name was Junior and the 76 year old guide's name was Hernando. Hernando said that when he arrived from the mountains in 1952 the population of Lima was 1 million and now it is 11 million. Similarly Callao in 1952 was separate from Lima and now with urban sprawl they are joined and that is why 43 municipalities (each with a separate mayor) form the Lima conglomerate. When driving it seems like one continuous city with traffic and lights every 4 blocks. As our tour was City Drive and Indian Market we only had two stops. The first stop was the square in front of the presidential palace. We were too early for the changing of the guards. We bought a selection of Manu Picchu postcards. The next stop was the Indian Market. Our mission was to get your Mom some alpaca socks because at night she sometimes has cold feet. We found that the further away from the center of the market the cheaper the socks. We bought 3 pairs. My wife also bought a pair of alpaca slippers. The bus travelled on the edge of the cliffs overlooking the ocean and "Love Pair" statute. We saw them surfing on the ocean. Then we drove to the Avenue Costamera along the bottom of the cliffs and got a closer look at the ocean. This allowed us to miss a lot of bumper to bumper driving to get back to Callao. However, we had to wait about 1/2 hour at the checkpoint getting into the container port as one security guard checked that each passenger on each bus had their room key. 8 buses arrived at the same time. We did watch a toddler take a bucket bath on the street while waiting. We also checked out the wares of about 12 kiosks before going onboard. Read Less
