La Romana (Casa de Campo) Altos de Chavon Excursion Reviews

Follow the cobblestone streets of Altos de Chavon, a village constructed to resemble medieval Europe, to one of us its quaint shops or art galleries featuring the work of local artists. Dine at one of the Mediterranean-inspired restaurants in town or explore other activities Altos de Chavon has to offer.

This looks like a historical site in the pictures, but it was actually built in 1983. It's nice, but just a tourist attraction. Second part was the "cave", not even sure what to say, except that you better practice you stair master before going, There is approximately between 160 and 200 stairs you have to climb. Drawings on cave walls in no way are believable to be historical, they are just the same duplicated drawings of stick figure kids. Read Less

Great sightseeing. $5 per person to take you downtown (roundtrip) although we didn't do this after hearing mixed reviews about the situation downtown with aggressive residents and dirty streets. I do not ever care to go back to LaRomana ever again! At each stop you had to run a gauntlet of vendors that were some of the most aggressive I have ever seen! Altos de Chavon was nice and the riverboat was disappointing. The river was dirty and nasty; however, the boat crew did what they could to make it a fun trip. Passengers who went to the all-inclusive resort loved this port! For me, it was ruined by the vendors and I heard it was even worse if you went downtown! Worse than Nassau! Read Less

Enjoyed what we saw, would have liked more time on our own to explore.
Sail Date: October 2015
Enjoyed what we saw, would have liked more time on our own to explore. The guide kept repeating the same thing over and over. The river boat portion was so so, it had stormed the day prior, so the river was muddy and full of debris.

This port is only fair. D.R. is a fairly poor country and there is not much to do without a tour. The Altos de Chavon in the Casa de Campos development was worth a couple of hours max. It is a recreated village; well done and looks old over looking the Chavon river with lots of photo ops. The shoping and dining were pretty expensive, but there are a couple of places worth seeing and the small market at the far end has some good stuff and beer for only $2-3. Get there early because quite a lof of tours pass through quickly. It is very serene when they first open, but gets busy later. We got a bus right outside the cruise terminal for around $20 each. The ship price was higher $49/39, but may have included a second stop. The drive in through the resort is also very pretty and it looked like they had other intersting options as well. Read Less

Would have liked a little more time to explore here, but I do understand the ship's schedule. Our excursion was Altos de Chavon, with a side trip to the La Flor Cigar Factory. The cigar factory was very interesting....Altos de Chavon, not so much. It was a totally fabricated (old Spanish/Italian)village with shops and restaurants. The shops were lacking in product. We did have a nice meal at Onno's Bar...really liked that part. Our guide wasn't the best....all he wanted to do was brag about how Elton John sang there in the amphitheater several years ago....I might would have liked it better had our guide been better. I wish we had taken a city tour. Read Less
