La Romana (Casa de Campo) Saona Island Excursion Reviews

Saona is a small island off of the coast of the Dominican Republic that is known for its stereotypical deserted island feel.

La Romana, DR We last stopped here in 1995….but not much has changed other that the ship now docks. We did a private excursion with Seavis Tours (Sonoma Special). Had a great time… about 30 people from our cruise had booked through them. Due to limited time in port they customized the tour to meet our timing. Speed boat to a private island beach…open bar and lunch …then we stopped at a shallow area about 100 yds off shore to view Starfish and scuba. Water was waste deep and we had snacks and drank rum and any mixer for about 45 minutes. Very enjoyable day. Ingrid our guide was excellent and I highly recommend this tour company. They also offer other land based tours as well. Read Less

This was the best shore excursion we have ever taken. We took a speed boat ride to Saona Island (with one short stop on the way). Once we arrived at Saona Island we enjoyed a beautiful beach day. Lunch and drinks were included. After a couple hours we got back on the boats and headed to La Piscina Natural where we got off the boats again to look for Starfish. This is a natural sandbar in the middle of the ocean and it was absolutely beautiful! The crew passed out more drinks and snacks while were there. Read Less

Don't do it! I wish we would've went to Dreams all inclusive. This may be a good exursion another time of year. The seaweed was so bad that the water was dark brown and not even close to being able to swim in it. It was awful. The boatride was fun, but after a 30 minute stuffed taxi ride, followed by a 35 min speedboat to get to seaweed island, i was wishing I stayed on the ship! The natural pool was a shallow sandbar and beautiful in crystal clear water. This was the highlight. The guides were nice too. Read Less

The buffet lunch was delicious and the time spent at the natural pool with the starfish is a memory that I will never forget. This was our favorite port by far. We first found a taxi (exit cruise port and turn left), our driver was Edwardo and he was AMAZING! He was so very personable and shared all about his Island with us. Upon arriving at Seavis office, we quickly got signed in and boarded onto our speedboat with our guide,Ingrid, who made our excursion a great one! The boat rides themselves were fast and fun! Saona Island was lovely, unfortunately water conditions weren't good that day so snorkeling was a flop. We had a great lunch buffet and free drinks. There were a handful of locals selling items (no one was being pushy), and I sooooo wish i would have got our souvenirs there because back at the port all that was there was generic items, nothing handmade or authentic. We booked the Soana island experience with Seavis and we were not disappointed. The taxis are waiting in an enclosed area and they will take you to the Bayahibe beach where the Seavis tour is to take place. We paid the taxi driver ($39: 2 adults + kid) after our tour and when we were back in the pier. The Seavis tour gave us an experience of a lifetime. The speed boat ride is rough so if you're easily sea-sick, this is not for you. We were able to experience the beautiful island of Saona, where my husband was able to see lots of fish, including lion fish! He had an amazing snorkeling experience. Food (spaghetti, grilled chicken, bread, peas and rice, fruits) and drinks were provided as part of the tour package. The best part was going to the Natural Pool, where the water is so clear, warm and very shallow (up to waist) and enjoy holding massive orange star fish. We wish we could have stayed there for a day.Beautiful place. We'll probably be back and experience Punta Cana as well. Read Less

We did a speedboat to Sanoa island, which was a beautiful and relaxing time. Due to the wind on the speedboat, I took my hat off, so I sunburned the top of my head (about 45 minutes each way). On the way back we stop in a sandy area about 2-3 feet deep and found a few starfish. and it was nice to just hang out while they were feeding us free drinks. I looked at doing this tour through an independent vendor, but I liked doing the speedboat straight from the dock rather than a taxi to another part of the island to a boat. Read Less

First was La Romana, Dominican Republic. Two options here - either stay on the boat or have a pre-scheduled excursion. it's not a well developed area and there's literally nothing to see, within walking distance of the pier. Some people said they took a cab into the local town, and were bombarded with pushy vendors, to the point they felt unsafe and left within 30-45 minutes, returning to the ship. We pre-scheduled a tour through Seavis on-line, that I would highly recommend. Very reasonably priced and fun excursion. Took 20 minute cab ride from pier to small fishing village, Bayhibe, then speed boat out to small island for about three hour stay. Seavis provided snorkeling gear, beach chairs, delicious lunch of chicken, pork chops, rice & pasta, and fresh fruit, and unlimited beer and rum drinks all day. Stopped for about 45 minutes on the way back at this beautiful sand bar a mile off shore, but in only 3-4 feet deep water, and the guides found tons of starfish for us to handle. All for only $45 p/p, a great value ! Read Less

Sail Date: July 2014
In La Romana we too the Seavis excursion to Sanoa Island. It was a decent tour for the money. The only drawback is the boat ride over to Sanoa Island: It's very rough and you are packed into the boat like sardines.

We opted to use Pro Excursions for a trip to Saona Island as they came highly recommended on the cruise critic boards as well as Trip Advisor. Unfortunately, our experience was not as good. Getting cabs was very confusing as they did not have a representative standing by with a list as their confirmation email indicated. Once we arrived we had expected to go to the island by catamaran to have space, but we were crammed on to a tiny speedboat with little to no leg room. Nearly everyone was griping about how uncomfortable it was. The life jackets didn't seem to accommodate children and one parent was very upset about that. Saona island was absolutely beautiful and I would highly recommend an excursion there, but not necessarily with Pro Excursions. The sand was literally the softest I've ever seen and it felt almost like a powder. Read Less
