A beautiful and colorful city, you can walk down El Malecón, visit Old Havana and the Catedral de San Cristóbal, hear salsa music, and shop open-air bazaars.

We had 2 excellent guides, Miguel and Eileen. There were 8 in our party (all in 60;s and 70's) and through the tour company we had pre booked the 2 guides, 2 Cadillacs, one hard top and the drivers for two days. Havana was quite different to other Caribbean countries we have visited, lovely architecture, people and vehicles. Our ship stayed overnight, so we booked a night out at the Buena Vista Social Club with the Legends of Guarjirito ~ great music, singing and atmosphere. Most artists were quite elderly, but they could sing and play those instruments. The meal was just ok. Read Less

Lots of confusion on whether you can take a private or ship tour, we chose the Best of Havana, 7 hours. The tour guide was awful, he rambled on and on about his previous job, we could understand him but most on the bus could not figure out what he was saying and just gave up. We spent far to much time on the bus waiting for people to arrive back as our guide was not organized and changed bus location and meeting place all the time. We had 20 minutes here, 20 minutes there. Spent way to long at the cemetery about an hour. He did not explain what was included with lunch so people did not get a drink besides the rum punch. He was not very knowledgable about Fusterlandia. I felt that this was a waste of $600.00. Wished we had taken a private tour. Read Less

Superb experience.. you get see a LOT more than just the old cars (and lots of NEW ones too) brought in from Mexico, Europe. Tour buses amazingly modern, comfortable ...built in China, with Pirelli tires from Europe... clearly see many other countries benefitting from US "boycott". Served us a very nice lunch..lobster... in a small restaurant, with musicians playing Cuban songs. Very nice experience. But the most fascinating sight ... the huge extent of dilapidated buildings almost everywhere ..worse than I saw in pre Glasnost USSR or pre-tourism China. They spend on education, health, literacy...not paint the guide said ...but for anyone on the cruise, it's like landing on another planet. Puts any criticisms of Empress facilities, food, services in perspective! Read Less

I really enjoyed Cuba. I definitely wouldn’t mind returning. We took a ships tour. I hate ships tours. With all the back and forth regarding the changes in the people to people designation, we were afraid we might not be able to debark if we didn’t have a ships tour. We booked the Old Havana Heritage Walking tour. Our tour departed at 8am. It began at the square (right across from the cruise ship terminal) We walked by the sculpture conversation, over to several squares, and to one of the oldest cathedrals. Afterwards, we got on a tour bus. Many of us were surprised by this, as we thought the walking tour would be all walking. It wasn’t. We were bused to a Cuban cigar store and then to a bar where we listened to Cuban music, got samples of Cuban cigars, rum and Cuban coffee. Then we returned to the pier about 4 hours after we started. We reboarded the cruise ship to have lunch and then debarked again. This time we walked to another Cathedral on our way to the artists market. If you enjoy local art, this is the place to be. There were rows and rows of art, handicrafts and some of the standard souvenir type stuff. There were Tshirts, magnets, shot glasses etc. There was a smaller market across the street too that had cheaper prices, but less of a selection. We shopped for about 2 hrs and then got on the hop on hop off bus tour of Havana. 10CUCpp. I love HO HO’s because they are a great way to get an overall view of a city. This was no exception. Other than a stop at Revolution square and most of the Havana area we didn’t really need to get off. We drove up the Malecon, and past several squares. Again it was a nice way to get an overview of the city. It took about 2 hours to complete the entire route. When we got off at the pier we still had time remaining to get more souvenirs and use the remainder of our CUCs. Just like other Caribbean ports there were tour vendors hanging around trying to get you to tour Cuba independently. One guy offered 15CUC’s to pedal us around for about an hour in the Old Havana area. I saw many vendors trying to sell the tours riding in an old convertible. They were lined up waiting for you when you exited the cruise ship terminal. It’s a shame the government makes it so hard to visit because this would be one of the easiest ports to see without a ships tour. Old Havana is directly across the street from the terminal, the markets are a few blocks to the left. Plenty of shops, restaurants within walking distance. The HOHO stop isn’t far away either making it easy to take in the rest of Havana easy and cheap. Nobody asked where we’d gone when we re-boarded or proof of where we bought our items from. For all the time we spent worrying about it, it was very painless. Despite the Department of state warnings due to the embassy incidents. We felt very welcomed by the Cuban people. I didn’t feel unsafe walking around and even in the markets when we said no, we could walk away without being harassed as we have been in some ports. There were plenty of cruisers finishing up their tours with the cruise line and taking local ones. Read Less
