Easy to get train tickets first thing in the morning (before 8 AM) at less than half the price that the cruise line offers. Fantastic sail in and out - fjords are different from those in Alaska, but spectacular nonetheless.

Flam, Norway: The small town of Flam set at the end of a fjord hosts up to six cruise ships a day. We were lucky to find only one other. The #1 tour is a 12-mile ride on the Flam railroad up the hillside and through the mountains with waterfalls in abundance. There is a 10 minute stop at a waterfall where the mythical witch appears singing her siren song. At the midway point, there is an hour stop to enjoy waffles and coffee in the hotel and spend a little time enjoying the view back down the valley before catching the next train back down. Viking reserves seats for its passengers. Check out the 1-minute zip line ride from the viewpoint halfway down the valley to a farm you can barely see in the distance if a seat on the train back down is too tame! Read Less

Our favorite port stop in Norway was Flam. It was like a postcard village at the end of a long, beautiful fjord. There was the Mall of Norway with lots of souvenirs but very crowded. The tourist office was connected and provided FREE wi-fi! We did the Flam Train excursion which was fantastic for it's views. Have your camera ready for the stop at the large waterfall where they put on quite a good show. At the turnaround, the guides vaguely recommended people switch seats. Later we found out this was so everybody got a good view of both sides. However, we were not on the train when this happened so were a bit surprised to find our seats occupied when we returned and a bit of confusion as people tried to figure out where to go without causing a fight (some people chose not to participate and remained in the seats they had from the beginning). You may want to make arrangements with the people across the aisle when you get settled on the first leg of the journey. Quibble: Excursion guides should have done a better job explaining this from the beginning. We ended up sitting across from a couple that were obviously not pleased to have us there on the return journey. Read Less

The Flam railway was the tour we looked forward to most, but it was badly run, just a train (the scenery was good) and a stop for mediocre waffles, jam and cream. The disembarkation from the ship took absolutely ages (over an hour). It was not organised well at all, one boat needed servicing which didn't help. The train was late both ways, and there was very little to do at Vatnahalsen after eating waffles to take up the hour and twenty minutes we had at the top. Please do not expect too much from this tour. Read Less

We took the afternoon trip as the morning ones had already been booked. We spent the morning in and around Flam taking in the sights, the excellent Flam Railway Museum and , of course, the brewpub. The railway itself is an impressive feat of engineering but it doesn't remotely live up to its own tag of 'the world's most beautiful railway journey'. Our train broke down (see above) and we ended up taking the service train to Voss before returning by coach. Most agreed that the Myrdal to Voss trip was far better than the one we had paid for. Apparently the carriages are due to have panoramic windows fitted. This will improve the experience. Read Less

Flam railway was part of the Norway in a Nutshell tour. It's about a ten minute walk to the railway station, but there are benches if you need to rest on the way. The steps to the train are deep and steep - I have RA so walk like I'm drunk as no stability and very little strength. But, it's worth doing this - people will help you balance etc...if you're stuck. This is a fabulous trip and really worth doing if you can. Read Less
