Belize City The Belize Zoo Excursion Reviews

The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center is settled upon 29 acres of tropical savanna and exhibits over 150 animals, representing over 45 species, all native to Belize. The zoo keeps animals which were orphaned, rescued, born at the zoo, rehabilitated animals, or sent to The Belize Zoo as donations from other zoological institutions.

After our river safari and lunch, we caught a bus for 35-minute ride to Belize Zoo. This is a wonderful place - all the animals are rescues or born here, not stolen from the wild. Anne, our tour guide, led us thru the maze-like enclosures and open spaces (the capuchin monkeys are from to come and go!). Saw: King Vultures, black vulture, spectacled owl, cougar, margay, ocelot, howler and spider monkeys, jaguarundi, harpy eagle, tayra (bush dog), wild turkeys, jabiru storks, keel-billed toucan, tapir, ornate hawks, alligators and crocodiles, whitetail deer, tarantula, and boas. There's a framed and autographed photo of Steve Irwin from when his show, The Crocodile Hunter filmed there in 2003. Back on the bus for about a 50 minute ride back to Belize city. Read Less

It is a rescue/rehab zoo with indigenous animals to Belize. So, it isn't a large zoo. It doesn't have the variety of animals that most zoos do. All that, is noted in the description of the excursion, but I think some in our group didn't read that part. It was also very hot and humid. There isn't much room for air to move in the zoo because the habitat enclosures are dense vegetation. The tour guide was very knowledgeable about the zoo. You will see jaquars up close--exactly as billed. Beautiful animals! The reason I don't rate this excursion really high is because of the 2 hrs we had on the bus!! Maybe it said the bus ride was an hour either way. If it did, I missed it. Read Less

Excellent excursion. The Zoo is about 60 minutes from the ship but it is well worth it. The Zoo was founded in 1983 by Sharon Matola, who was keeping the animals as pets. When told she couldn't, she formed the zoo as a sanctuary, as the animals would die if released into the wild. They host over 45 species animals that are native to Belize, and they work to preserve them. You will see tapirs, monkeys, owls, and some of the big cats, amongst many others. Junior and Chiqui, the jaguars, are a must-see! Would definitely recommend, and would definitely go back. Read Less

Bus arrived on time. Got us to zoo before it opened so we waited. Did not get to see most animals as they were sleeping. You can get in the cage with the jaguar for an extra $20 per person and be licked by the jaguar (the guide said that this is normally $50 so we got a 'break'). Went to lunch place. Food was burned. Boat to take us on the river was 90 minutes late so the river boat then rushed us back to the port on the "chocolate river" as we deemed it so we wouldn't miss our port time. We saw maybe 5 crocodiles, a dozen monkeys, and five iguanas while on the boat. Not worth the money. Read Less

The zoo was interesting with a variety of animals that have been rescued. People took a lot of photos. Our friends got some wonderful shots. Then we were off to lunch. The food was good but the place was way too crowded. There were lots of other tours there ahead of us and after. They need at least 1/3 more tables and chairs. Then we were off to a WWF site. Had a very informative talk about how they grow rice. We then set off on a hike to see the howler monkeys in the wild. It was worth the trip. We saw a family of 7 and heard other families howling back at them. Read Less

Belize City -- Zoo and Howler Monkey Excursion (Ship Excursion) We did a ship excursion and went to the Zoo and Howler Monkey Preservation . Because my husband and I are thinking about starting a family soon, we were extra cautious about mosquitoes because of the Zika virus. The Zoo is in the jungle, so pack repellent. I had on long pants and light colors. Unfortunately, the pants I had on were not the breathable material I thought they were so I was pretty hot and miserable temperature wise. I also work my hair down with a hat to protect my neck, and that added to the heat. So dress light, but protect yourself. The tour guide was EXCELLENT. She is native to Belize, so she had plenty of information about her home. She talked the whole way to the Zoo, had the inside track to make sure you saw all of the animals at the zoo, talked the whole way to the Howler Monkey Preservation, and then she let you rest on the ride back to the port. Even thought that was technically her rest time too, she STILL offered her availability to answer questions if we had them. The Zoo was nice. We didn't stay that long, but that was okay. It's a small zoo, but it feels more intimate and the animals don't look miserable because they are in their natural habitat. REPELLENT is KEY here. If you have on open-toed shoes, there are a lot of ants so don't miss your feet. One bit me because I didn't think to put the repellent there. I put it on after that one bite and no more bites. I recommend Off Deep Woods. Lunch was gross. Just chicken, salad rice and beans. Vegetarian, so we just had rice and beans. The rice and beans had the oddest flavor -- almost musky. I didn't like it, but they gave us a huge portion so I had to eat most of it. The howler monkey portion was nice. Be aware that this isn't a zoo-- the monkeys pretty much live wild and may or may not be interested in visiting you. They will try their darndest to make sure that you see one, but be aware that it may not happen. We saw them, but they were to busy eating mangoes that it took a while to get them to come close. The tender trip is a fairly smooth one and only takes about 20 minutes. Once off the tender, we exited and headed straight to the meeting point for a Cruise Excursioneer tour. Here things went off the rails :( The rep from the tour walks us over to a guide; who tells us that they had already left. She said our ship's time in port is too short for that particular tour and they don't offer it to our ship? I was really disappointed, but assuming they would automatically refund our deposit we headed back to the cruise terminal to regroup. (They did not – I'll explain at the end) A guide, Sheldon, overheard, told us about several other tours. He had on a purple shirt, from a company I recognized from my research (can't remember which one - as I said I was upset, I had really wanted to see the ruins). We said we needed time to decide (I didn't want to be pressured into anything). We found a bench and talked about what else we might do and decided the zoo would probably be fun. We came back 15 minutes later – he was still there. He took us on a lovely city and zoo tour for $65 pp. It was about 3 1/5 hours. The zoo really very beautiful, really more of an animal sanctuary and very educational. Zoo pictures We arrived back at port about 2, did a little shopping and went back to eat a late lunch on the ship. Normally, we would have eaten in port, but last year we learned the hard way, they put coconut in almost all their food and my DD get's sick from it (food sensitivity). Read Less

We were driven to the zoo by bus and were regaled with history and jokes from our tour guide which made the trip very enjoyable. The zoo is not like American zoo's. There are only native animals here and they are pretty much up close and personal...no large moats, just a fence that you about 1 foot away from...our guide pointed out the best places to take pictures so we all got some good shots. There were lots of cats, big and small - puma, ocelot, leopard; some tapir's (the national animal) which were cool to see in person, birds of prey and more! After the zoo, we had a lunch at a local place by the river (bbq chicken, red beans and rice, salad and soda - included in price) then we took a ride up the river back to the ship. The bus ride to the zoo is interesting as you get to see the sites of Belize. The zoo is fantastic. The animals look well taken care of. The habitats are really nice. We got up close and personal with a jaguar. It was a fantastic zoo trip. Then return trip is by boat on the river and this was FUN. If you don't mind the wind in your hair and a bit of a bumpy ride, then you will enjoy this. We saw interesting birds, an iguana the size of a dragon, and a MANATEE! Not just a fin or a nose, but the whole darn thing! He/she swam right up to the boat!!! That was the coolest experience ever. Read Less
