The ruins are very good, not really huge but there are a good number to see. The guide was very knowledgeable and answered lots of questions. Only thing is we didn't have enough time to explore the ruins on our own. We only had about 10 minutes before we had to get back on the tour bus. Read Less

Booking the tour to Altun Ha with Island Marketing was worth every penny. Manuel (M&M) and Diana were great. The provided lots of knowledge about Belize and made you feel comfortable. Altun Ha is the closest ruin adventure from the cruise port (approx. 45 minute drive). I would recommend this location because the roads you travel to all the ruins are pretty bumpy. Anyone with back troubles should avoid a long extended period traveling on these roads. Island Marketing tour to Altun Ha also includes a delicious lunch at The Roadhouse on the way back to the port (chicken, rice & beans, fried plantain & a drink). This is not provided if you book the excursion directly with Carnival. Altun Ha is a beautiful ruin site. There's a total of 3 ruins you can climb. The tallest one will have you out of breath but worth the climb. I would say anyone taking the climb should be in pretty good health. There is a banister going up and coming down but you still need to take your time. This is a must see experience. Read Less

Went to Altun Ha with Cynthia and Nacho. It was nice to have a privately booked tour. Cynthia took us into the Altun Ha site and explained the different ruins. Very nice. Smaller than most sites but it was enough for us travelling with kids. Plus, there wasn't much else to do in Belize with young kids. We went to a Chinese restaurant for lunch afterwards on our way back to the cruiseship. Lunch was good but that was out of your own pocket. The only bad thing I would say is that when I reserved the tour, the price was to include lunch (local food) but during the tour, Nacho asked about if we wanted to get lunch or not and then asked what kind of food. Out of pocket for lunch was fine if we had planned for that originally. Then when we returned to the ship, he tried to charge us the price that included lunch. There was a bit of disagreement there since I paid for my own lunch. He was okay with it but I thought it was poor that 1. he didn't remember the original agreement and 2. he tried to charge us a higher price than we agreed upon Read Less

Even though Belize City is on the mainland, the ship was anchored quite far and we were tendered in. It was quite windy. It was Christmas Day but we could tell the difference. A long bus ride (40 minutes) to the ruins and about an hour and a half there. The ruins were interesting but not very impressive. We climbed up one structure. There were many vendors selling local artifacts.A half hour bus ride took us to the river where we had lunch and then cruised down the river for slightly over an hour and back to the port.We saw egrets, blue heron, small crocodile, bats, monkeys, iguana and a dolphin put on a show for us. Other boats saw a manatee but we did not.Video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEYfGbAa-CY Read Less

We originally signed up for Cave Tubing, but when we met Vitalino Jr and his staff, we were informed that too much rain had shut down the cave tubing excursion. In Belize we took the Altun Ha ruins and Wallace River ride offered by Carnival. This was an excellent choice. We more than got our money’s worth. I am thrifty and was concerned but couldn’t recommend it more. Our guides were very informative. They made the bus ride fun and educational. My husband and I could not decide if it was the 2 hours we had been told it would be or not because it went by so fast. The ruins are climbable (some are not) and the history, geography and company were great. To climb the ruins you need to be somewhat in shape. I surprised myself but was told my face was a bit flushed when I finished. I have to admit the stairs are high and unforgiving. Lunch was served at a local resort which in keeping with Belize had grass covered huts and amazing scenery and gardens. Some howler monkeys joined us in the trees of the garden and ate lunch while looking at us funny. Great pics. The river ride was so fun that when we landed at the dock we were all cheering for more … literally... people were looking at us funny when we pulled in. We saw wildlife of every kind. We even came upon Tapir, the national animal of Belize, locally it is known as the Mountain Cow. The guide said they are seldom ever seen. The photo ops are wonderful but wear rain gear if you are to sit in the back of the boat. The monologue during every phase was so informative. The one reason I would only take this excursion offered by the cruise company is that it is a full day and should anything detain you the boat Read Less

Altun Ha & Belize River: I had previously taken this tour about 5 years ago and fondly remembered it as a favorite. I was disappointed this time. First, we waited over an hour for the rest of the tour group to get there because it was not just folks from the NCL Dawn, it was also passengers from the NCL Jewel which had trouble that morning. I wish that NCL would have coordinated this better because waking people up and the crack of dawn to have them stand around for an hour was not a great start to the trip. It also led us to be late the entire day. Second, we arrived at Altun Ha in the morning but due to the wait in the am, we only had 40 minutes to do a quick tour and take a few photos before we were rushed back onto the bus to go somewhere else. "Old Belize River Tour and Altun Ha" ... Starts at 8 a.m. with a wait in the Stardust Theater for your excursion to be called, then a fast tender ride to shore, then another fast boat to the mouth of the river, then a ride up the river while the guides point out the relatively scarce (because this is a somewhat developed area) local flora and fauna - manatee, crocodile, iguana, howler monkey, bats, birds, a boa constrictor. The boat ride ends at a rickety wooden dock and then all aboard an old school bus for a short trip to what seems to be the back entrance to a local "resort". After quite a long walk through the grounds, we arrive at the resort's open-air pavilion where lunch (included) and cold sodas/beer are served. Then the guide rounds us up for a short walk to the entry pavilion to wait for an a/c coach bus to take us to Altun Ha. The ruins at Altun Ha are MAGNIFICENT and 100% worth the trouble to get there, no matter which excursion you take! Handcrafts/drinks/snacks are available from the locals. After an all too brief amount of time spent walking around the ruins we are back on the a/c coach bus for a 1.5 hour ride back to the port and tender to the ship. Read Less

We boarded the bus right out the back of the port after waiting in line in the A/C in Diamonds International, where we also got to look around and was offered punch. Melanie was our bus ride tour guide, the ride was about an hour long. She talked to us for about 45 min teaching us all about Belize, the animals, the land and the people there. It was very interesting and informative. We also received a cool map with good information on it. The ride came to an end when we reached to Ruins, we got off the bus and started the tour that was given by Carlos. Carlos was very proud of the ruins and his people, he was a great guide. After the talking part we were able to walk around on our own and climb to the top of the different ruins. They also had local venders selling their wood products, coconuts and dried plantains chips. We got back on the bus and headed back to town where we were dropped off at a local restaurant for a refreshment before walking back to the pier. Read Less
