Bear viewing (sorta) The Bears did not appear until we left on the bus.
Sail Date: June 2015
Bear viewing (sorta) The Bears did not appear until we left on the bus. All we saw in the viewing area was lots of bear poop. A lot of poop with an armed guard for protection.

The bear tour in the afternoon was not one we would repeat. It was 3 1/2 hours in a van with a driver who did not use the microphone so those in the back could not hear. The whole afternoon we saw a total of one deer. The driver said he goes for weeks without seeing bears...so why do they offer this tour? It was 3 1/2 hours we could not get back and would much rather have spent the time doing anything else. Read Less

He was an excellent guide and told bout Icy Strait and the Hoonah people , enjoyed it very much. Whale watch boat ride was nothing less than AMAZING!!!! The crew were so excited, we saw up to 40 Orca whales in what they called ' super pods"...right up next to the boat, it was raining and chilly but everyone was up on deck and had a great time. the shopping area at port was very nice but the merchandise was much more expensive than in other ports. Took the Forest and Nature Tram excursion, which left 15 minutes late. As expected it was slow, laid back and so mostly the rainforest and the water.

We whale-watched in the am and then did the bear viewing.
Sail Date: July 2013
We whale-watched in the am and then did the bear viewing. The Native guide aboard the boat was most interesting, but he still pushed for sales on locally mad art/croche. Saw some whale activity, and three bears.

Booked a Bear Search trip with BBL after I found them on the Hoonah website whilst trying to avoid cruise ship charters. What a treat and delight to have such an avid & enthusiastic guide as Phil who is just so passionate about all he has to share with his guests. It wasn't the best weather on the day of our visit however we did a brief trip around town, had to stop & chat to a couple of locals along the way, visited the nearly complete lodge and then headed out of town on our search. We'd mentioned to Phil that we hadn't seen any salmon on the run during our entire 3 weeks in Alaska - we just kept missing them. Well - were we in for a treat. Not only did he do his very best to search out some bears for us (we only saw 2 but we DID see them and quite up close & personal with one......) he then took us out to the mouth of a river on Freshwater Bay to not only SEE the fish - but also try & catch some (we had licences....) And did we catch them! All catch & release but soooooo much fun hooking these cranky monsters who are just trying to get upstream & spawn! If I ever have the opportunity to return to SE Alaska, I would definitely come back to Chichagof to try and make the most of this rich & diverse part of the state. If the hospitality shown to us on our daytrip is anything to go by, I would LOVE to stay at Brown Bear Lodge once it's ready as these guys are the best! Read Less

We bit the bullet and decided to take a cruise line tour. We had been to Icy Strait the first year it had opened in 2004. The only difference now is their popular zip line. We are not zip line enthusiasts; hence, the Forest and Nature Tram. Our Indian guide drove us through a narrow trail while telling us stories about the native people from the area and pointed out many of the plants that they use for medicines. Afterward, we took a walk to look at the zip line and then went through the shops in the old cannery building. Many people said this was the best place to do a whale watching tour. We had done that in 2004. Read Less
