We drove in a van to the town of Haines, and onward from there to Chilkot Lake. The guides had high resolution spotting scopes on tripods, and were very good at spotting eagles nests and other wildlife. They even showed us how to use the scopes to take pictures with our cameras. We took a short hike near Chilkot lake, and they gave us lots of interesting info about the landscape. I wished the hike had been longer. We ended up back in Haines where they served us sandwiches and drinks before returning to the ship.

We took the Denver Valley Hike and White Pass Railroad tour run by Packer Expeditions. It was fantastic. Tour is strenuous, but rain forest is great. Wonderful tour. See details in my review.

We did the lower Dewey Lake Trail and I must say this is a must for everyone who loves the outdoors. We are 50 year old and it was quite the hike but so worth it.

Kevin took us on a private and customized tour around the Yukon and Skagway. His van was very comfortable and he was extremely nice. He was waiting when we got off the dock and away we went. We got to see waterfalls, experience the Yukon Suspension Bridge, wildlife (including bears!), go to all the touristy spots (liek the ALaska sign, etc.), went to a dog musher camp/museum, held puppies!, saw Emerald Lake and Carcross Desert, meet a totem pole carver and see his work, and so much more!!!!! It was a great day to spend with the family and Kevin!

This was our only independently booked tour. After disembarking the train in Fraser, BC our tour continued by mini-van with a small group of other tourists up into the Yukon Territory. A brief visit to Carcross and Emerald Lake as well as a barbeque lunch was provided. It was also the only time we got to see bears the whole week - a mother and baby were foraging for food on the side of the highway which made the trip more than worthwhile. A great photo-op.

I took the Disney Wonder Cruise to Alaska and wondered how we were going to experience Alaska when Skagway has a population of 800 and only 5 streets. HOWARD MALLORY was the answer. He spent 9 hours with us taking us up the AlCan Highway through Alaska, British Columbia and the Yukon Territory. We saw not only the usual tourist sites (short time in each thank heaven) but mostly the areas that only the locals know about. He was knowledgeable about everything and was able to answer any question we asked. We saw eagles, goats, moose poo, and 3, count them, 3 BEARS. One of the bears was so close that if we'd gotten out of the car we would have fallen over him. Howard warned us to stay in the car and as a result we were able to watch the bear up close for quite a long time without danger. The SUV was very comfortable for the 5 of us (2 children and 3 adults) and Howard is a very safe driver even on mountainous, and sometimes twisty roads. The views we saw were amazing and Howard stopped whenever we wanted to drink in the vista longer than a "drive by". (Try doing that on a bus trip -- I think not!) The border patrol stations for both Canada and the U.S. knew Howard and there was no delay in crossing the border either way. He also steered us to a "local" spot for lunch that was not inundated with bus tours and had excellent food. The family had a great time at the desert in the middle of the Yukon which was amazing since they spend little time in the sand as a rule. (Kids hate getting sand in their shoes.) but the view from the top of the sand dunes was amazing and worth the climb. You can't go wrong with Howard. The price was reasonable and worth every penny.
