A manic city where you take a leap of faith when ever you cross the road, but it was still amazing !! Had the best lunch at the restauranct across the road from the Reconciliation Palace, which was well worth visiting, if only to see where the Nth Vietnamese broke down the gates with their tanks. Also, the Post Office is well worth checking out and unfortunately we did not leave enough time to visit the Ho Chi Minh Museum. Read Less

The tour we did was actually "Saigon on your own". The port at Phu My has NOTHING to see, so the best option is to get to Saigon or Vung Tau - due to the notorious traffic the more expensive ship's tours at least guarantee you won't be left behind if you're caught up.Most of the things to see in Saigon are within a few blocks of each other, so its easy to do-it-yourself. Note that as at December 2014 the main intersection outside the Rex Hotel is a massive construction zone for a new MTR and pedestrial mall, which makes getting around a bit harder. The rooftop garden at the Rex Hotel is an iconic spot for a drink, although note prices are 3-4 times what you'd pay at a street bar. There's a major shopping centre next door with a big food court.Highlights to visit are Notre Dame Cathedral, the Opera House and the Post Office (the latter perhaps surprisingly is the pick of them). The Reunification Hall (ex-Presidential Palace) is also worth a visit, but note it will be VERY busy when a cruise ship or ships are in town on top of normal visitors. The evening sail away down the river is very pleasant.
