Went on the bus to an old all timber Gothic Church which was quite interesting. Then to a beautiful rose garden where we had morning tea. We passed other notable places of interest and stopped to take photos. All the while, we were lucky enough to have the ONLY Maori bus driver of the 20 that serve the cruise line in Wellington. He was a wealth of knowledge on the history of NZ and of Maori culture. Simultaneously, he was SO FUNNY and had such a beautiful and jovial personality, that he made the tour even better! He sang to us both the English and Maori anthems, and we sang King of the Road together on the way back to the ship. I enjoyed the tour, and for me, the rose garden was the best stop. Read Less

The tour itself was wonderful but we were put on a bus with NO air conditioning and NO windows for 4 hours. Everyone was getting really hot as it was about 80 degrees outside and over 90 degrees on the bus. We went to five stops and no one wanted to get back on the bus after each stop. There were 40 of us on the bus and so many of the people complained about it that they refunded about 1/3 of the excursion price back to us. I think the entire amount should have been refunded. We stopped at a store to get water, the cable cars, a scenic overlook, the botanical gardens, and a church. It was so hot that the bus driver said he was going to refuse to work the next day if the air conditioning wasn't fixed. This was the worse excursion that I have ever taken and I have been on 20 cruises! Read Less

OK city tour, but too long and detailed. We have had very good experience with "free" walking tours in other cities, but there isn't one in Wellington. This tour is booked out of the iSite visitor information center, at NZ$20 each. The tour guide was informative, but he got way too detailed about "this building used to be this, and now is that" and "that building used to be that, and now is this", as well as getting into details of how the buildings were damaged in earthquakes and are being rebuilt with new engineering structures or waiting to be demolished. The tour was more about downtown buildings than the history and stories like you get on other walking tours. I think that he could have done the entire tour in an hour. We had limited time and had to break off to see the things we wanted to during our cruise ship stop. If you have the time, and want intricate details, do this tour. We also went on the Wellington cable car....$4 one-way for a 10-minute ride up or $7.50 round trip. Good views at the top, but not worth the price. We rode up and then walked down through the botanical gardens. Beautiful gardens, but know that when you get to the bottom, you still have a 20-minute walk back into town. Read Less

This city tour allowed brief views of Wellington, a tram ride to the top of Mt. Victoria. If we had it to do over, we would travel independently downtown, take the tram ourselves, and maybe enjoy Zealandia instead.
