A 2 hour drive but well worth it, the jeep safari gave us amazing scenery, a lovely lunch was provided by the farm owner and his wife. Then off on the jet boat, great experience and good fun. A very expensive excursion but worth it.

We were very disappointed. First, due to insufficient tenders being available with two cruise liners being in port at the same time, we were delayed from boarding for two hours. Furthermore, the journey was four hours to Christchurch, in a non-air-conditioned coach. A stop was made en route, where passengers were left for an hour at a venue that only necessitated a short break of 30 mins, which meant that the time left for Christchurch was only going to be 2 hours maximum. Christchurch being demolished following the earthquake offered very little in the way of refreshment outlets and the few available meant long waits to be served. The return journey was a miserable experience, as the non-working air-conditioning system dripped water on passengers. Two passengers had umbrellas, which were being passed up and down the coach as the water swished around and I had a hat that served as a bucket. No apologies from RC or offer of a refund. Read Less

Akaroa was our favorite as we took a dolphin spotting cruise with akaroa dolphins. They have a little dog onboard called mr Murphy complete with his own life jacket who is a dolphin finder. This was just amazing as he went to where the dolphins were every time and drew our attention to them. We also saw fur seals and a rare yellow eyed penguin the commentary on the area was most interesting. Read Less

Very accomodating and informative bus driver/tour guide. Tone is his name I believe. He's middle aged, very large Maori with a great British accent :) Long ride to Christchurch from port of Akaroa and not much to see in Christchurch. We very much enjoyed the Canterbury Museum exhibit on Antartic Expeditions and the shops in the containers about 1 block away. We went to the Boat Shed on the Avon River for a light lunch. Good choice. A stop midway back to Akarora in a little village for hokey pokey ice cream (thank you Tone!) was super- great ice cream, lots of yummy food items in the deli. Would have been a dud without those spots. Read Less

Ship sailed into Akaroa and tendered to shore.
Sail Date: December 2012
Ship sailed into Akaroa and tendered to shore. The tender is nothing to worry about. This to me was the most beautiful port and the view coming into Akoroa is spectacular.

We did the Banks Peninsula Sheep farm tour. This certainly had a "family feel" to it that was nice. Again the scenery was beautiful and the sheep and dog displays were interesting. My only criticism was that Murray talked for a long time about the history and I would have preferred more "animal" time. Just personnel preference I guess. Read Less

Ship actually tendered at Akaroa due to earthquake damage at Christchurch. We did not actually take a tour, just walked around. They have a small town with tours to Christchurch, see dolphins, penguins, etc. They have a nice little park with a WWI war memorial and the largest roses I think I have ever seen. That is near a site with a statue of an artist painting an open frame so you can pose as if he was painting you and your friend can take a picture over the artist's shoulder. The town is full of beautiful trees and many different flowers so do walk around. Walk down the road to the lighthouse and keep looking in the bay to (hopefully) see dolphins swimming - I did. The lighthouse is small and pretty and for $2.50NZ you can go up to the top and look out. Very beautiful, peaceful little town! Read Less

Wonderful wildlife cruise on the bay in Akaroa.

Wonderful wildlife cruise on the bay in Akaroa. Thoroughly enjoyable and great value. Tender arrives at the wharf where the cruise leaves from so it's all very easy.

The port was actually Akaroa (which didn't appear in the list). We all enjoyed wandering through the French-styled village. I would recommend taking the tour of the Lighthouse. After lunch of fish and chips, we tried to steel ourselves for the afternoon excursion - a swim with the dolphins. The hector dolphins were so amazing that we very quickly forgot about the 12 deg water. Thoroughly recommend that you experience this - they supply wet suits. Read Less
