Hilo, Big Island: Historical Hilo and Akaka Falls. Our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. He moved to Hilo from Minnesota 22 years ago and does not regret it. Hilo is beautiful, full of history. We stopped at the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Factory. There are the plain salted macadamias and macadamias covered in every kind of goodies. Their shop is very pretty. Akaka Falls and Rainbow Falls are spectacular. The Lyman Museum and Mission House are very informative. Read Less

Loved the volcano hike, very tough terrane, 4 hours mostly in full sun. After hike group was taken to park headquarters for lunch. Turkey and cheese wraps were quite warm having been kept in a plastic bin in the hot van with no ice! With mayo and sprouts inside. Note to tour operator...proper food storage is more than just a good idea; it's potentially deadly. One bite then in the trash, leaving a bag of chips for lunch. We stopped on the way back to Hilo (1 hour drive time) at Mauna Loa tourist trap, er....candy factory for a factory tour. Nothing to see there, operation is closed, so just shopping opportunity.Once back in Hilo, Akaka Falls was another 1 hour drive north. All nine people groaned when we realized this. Sweaty and tired after a 4 hour hike, if I would have known 2 more hours in that van stuck to the plastic seat was ahead I would have bailed out in Hilo and taken a taxi back to the ship. This day was WAY too long and WAY too much drive time.Especially since we essentially had a bag of chips to eat all day! Read Less

On the dock we chose a waterfall tour with Authentic Hawaiian Adventures. We waited until the guide found enough people (7 total) to begin the tour. The 15 passenger bus was more than adequate for our little group but still allowed for an intimate tour. The guide, Kamaki, was very knowledgeable about Hawaii's history, geography, and vegetation. We stopped at the Liliuokalani Gardens that are near the cruise port, then made the scenic trip to Akaka Falls. Leaving the falls we stopped at a roadside fruit stand to sample fresh coconut and tropical fruits. We then stopped at a pastry shop for some lunchtime snacks. Back on the bus we continued to the Rainbow Falls in Hilo. Read Less
