Cartagena (Colombia) Las Bovedas Excursion Reviews

At the northeastern corner of the old walled city is Cartagena's grandest arcade. It's a fun place to shop and a photogenic spot to enjoy, but the rather oppressive barrel ceilings that over-arch each vault (boveda) come with a bit of history.
Now just a bunch of little stores.

Not worth it. At "Las Bovedas", they parked the van in front of the shop they wanted us to buy in, and told us there was a bathroom we could use. Yep, there was... ONE. No loo paper either, so 18 people lined up during a 20 minute stop for a paperless pottystop. The quality of the emeralds they were hawking weren't great (I wanted a beautiful pair, and they only had cloudy ones), and as I was #4 in line, I didn't have much time to shop. Then, we walked a bit and were presented with another jewelry shop we were told was a "factory" where they would talk to us about emeralds, which they did... which ones they could sell us. UNNGH. However, I did find a beautiful pair. Not sure if I got ripped off or not, but they sure are lovely. Pleased with the jewelry, but couldn't tell you jack about Cartagena. Really not much of a tour. However, the shopping at Las Bovedas was good--we stopped there first and I held off on buying and should not have. I am glad we got off the ship, but the city did not impress me much. Read Less

The architecture is very interesting. We only had about 20 minutes, due to the heavy traffic. Basically, these are small souvenir shops, one after another, for a block or two in either direction. Most of the shops had the usual touristy stuff. There were a few with local art work or emerald jewelry, but we really didn't have much time to check them out. We were also supposed to stop at a shopping mall, but weren't allowed to do so because of time constraints. We pretty much just made it back to the ship in time for boarding. Read Less
