The tour was boring, too much time was spent at various "demonstrations". We bought a carpet at one of these for 300 Euros and it wasn't delivered to us...

Don't bother. We just got held hostage in perfume shop, carpet shop and high priced rubbishy souvenir shop where guide got kickbacks for taking us. Vendors on strike in Sidi Bou Said so we just stood in hot sun of deserted town until the coach came back around to get us.

We walked quite a distance and took a local Tunisian train to the Medina. We had to have local currency to buy our tickets so we got it at a shop immediately in the cruise terminal. The train was overcrowed with broken out windows and passengers hanging outside the doors! When we got to the stop at the Medina we were fortunate to have a nice local lady point us in the right direction. It was quite a long walk but once we arrived in the Medina it was a great cultural adventure. We bought a pretty dress, a cruise employee bought a small live turtle for his cabin, and a sterling silver Hamsa necklace. On our way back to the ship we decided to take a taxi and it was fairly inexpensive.

The country is fascinating, but it is very "third world" in its level of poverty. Crumbling buildings and roads are somewhat depressing, even as the sheep herds in the middle of the city are fascinating. The guide spoke excellent English and the bus driver did an admirable job. The dreaded carpet shop stop in the ancient Medina turned out to be brief and entertaining!

Highlight of the cruise. Haggle hard though! Merchants start at 4-5 times the retail price.
