This was actually an excusrion to San Jose and Sarchi. After a wonderful tour of the Costa Rican capital we went and had a wonderful lunch in Sarchi. Oh also a highlight was a tour of San Jose's National Theatre.

Nice place to visit!
Sail Date: April 2015
Nice place to visit! We were amazed at the beautiful places, and shocked at the dire poverty in most all of the tours we took. The people there were very kind, and many spoke broken English - but not as broken as our Spanish!

The tour is called "Sarchi Village Tour". Most of your time in Sarci is spent at a "artisan/gift shop". It wasn't bad, but the description of the tour was deceiving. We boarded the bus for our 1 1/2 hour ride to Sarchi. Our guide was excellent and gave us quite a bit of information about the country and it's people. I expected that, when we got to Sarchi, we would have time to walk around the village. We went to a large gift ship that also gave us a full presentation on how the ox carts are made and painted. Then we had plenty of time to look around the large gift ship. The presentation was very good and the shop was nice, just not what I expected. The shop is definitely geared to handle large bus tours. After leaving the gift shop, we drove by the "largest painted ox cart" in the center of town before going to Grecia to see the metal church. Our tour got lucky. We arrived on Sunday at about 11:55 AM, right as church was letting out. We were able to go into the church and see the alter, etc... As the people were leaving, the church ladies were selling tamales (2 for $2). Some of us bought them and they were delicious! When the next tour bus came (about 30 minutes after us), the church was closed and they just saw the outside of the building. When we returned to the port, we spent quite a bit of time walking though the craft/vendor market along the beach area. The items were nice and the vendors were not pushy. We bought our Costa Rician coffee and other small gifts to share here. There is a free trolly "train" that runs from the port entrance to the ship. Read Less
