The drive through the countryside was awesome and the Hacienda was beautiful.

Excellent experience at this beautiful, high spot in the hills of Costa Rica. A long bus ride (2 hrs) but worth it. Fun demonstrations of sugar cane extraction, macadamia harvesting and hulling etc. Excellent simple lunch, much better than the food on Princess cruise line. The only drawback was the nonstop monologue via microphone by our guide- a full two hours on the way up to the hacienda. Thankfully, he was quiet on the return. Bring earplugs and or noise canceling headphones.

It was about a 4.5 hour drive up/down to the hacienda. We were disappointed in the tour guide who was rude and mocked guests' questions. He would turn to the driver, translate our questions, and they'd laugh. It got so obvious this was happening (plus, some of us could understand), it silenced the entire bus so it was tensely quiet. The guide barely explained the coffee bean growth and process. The only portion of the tour that was educational was the sugar growth/extraction but I heard from others it was still lacking in information they'd gathered on other tours. The lunch was chicken (too gamey) and plain white rice. We didn't eat it but enjoyed the macadamia samples. However, beware that the samples they give you will taste different than the ones you buy! The coffee was weaker than the sample. The macadamia brittle was rancid and stale and the plain macadamia nuts were stale as well. We had been on other coffee plantation tours and they far surpassed this one. We would NOT recommend this tour.

Excellent tour. Learned a lot about the history of the area and how they turn sugar cane into sugar. You get to see a lot of the area and country side.

Minor, our guide, was the key to the success of this tour. He filled the two-hour bus ride to the hacienda with a running commentary and Q&A about current economic and social issues in Costa Rica, providing historical background where necessary. The bus ride provides a good opportunity to observe the countryside. The bus was large and comfortable, with restroom, and a safe and careful driver (Adrian). The last 15-20 minutes of the day the sound system became full of static, much to Minor's frustration. Hopefully you won't be on the same bus, or they will have repaired it before your tour. The hacienda itself no longer seems to be a working farm, though Minor claimed it still produces sugar cane and its several by-products. It now seems to serve as a destination location for tour guides (we were two busloads, about 80-100 people), to give explanatory demonstrations of macadamia cultivation and processing, sugar cane processing, and a short talk about coffee production. Scenic views from the hillside (at an elevation of about 2500 feet) were very nice. Lunch was excellent. So while the hacienda seemed slightly artificial, or like a formerly working farm now preserved in amber, the day was well-managed, the guide was excellent, and the overall experience very enjoyable.

One of best excursions with Princess. Had to travel by comfortable coach 1.5 hrs to the hacienda. Experiences there were very well done with demonstrations on macademia nuts, sugar production and coffee. Meal was ample in an excellent environment; featured Costa Rican menu. The site was quite interesting. The guide was excellent. He was knowledgeable and handled questions well. Many years ago I lived in the region. He gave accurate answers.

The only drawback to this tour was the almost two hour ride to the hacienda. We really enjoyed the demos of old school sugar production and macadamia nut processing. The locally grown coffee was excellent. The tour also included and excellent meal.

This is a most impressive tour. Two hours each way by air conditioned coach, surprisingly the roads are very good, the scenery along the way is tremendous. The road from Siquirres to the Hacienda is a bus drivers nightmare - switchback after switchback, etc., etc. Once you arrive you really don't want to leave. demonstrations of macadamia nut processing, coffee bean cleaning & roasting and finally, artisanal processing of sugar cane from cane to raw brown sugar. Add to this a traditional lunch of black beans, rice, steamed local vegetables and chicken pieces in a light gravy. Lastly don't miss the chapel that was built by the owners from materials salvaged from churches that were being renovated.

Friday we called on Puerto Limon, Costa Rica. We ended up doing the ship's tour to the Tayutic Hacienda. My wife really enjoyed the Hacienda visit, where we were shown how they process Sugar Cane, Macadamia Nuts, and Coffee. I thought it was interesting but really could have cut the visit by a half hour as some of the demonstrations seemed prolonged just to fill the time. The nice lunch on an open deck patio with a view was very nice. This was a very long day, however. Meeting time was 6:50 AM and we returned to the ship at 3:28PM for a 3:30 "All aboard." We did not even get inside the port building where our friends were able to obtain some very nice local products.
